Love your videos on this subject! Another tip for folks to help with preservation that goes along with what you were mentioning with bouncing soft synths to audio: Do a save as, consolidate all your audio files to the same starting point and export these as WAV files to a folder to be included alongside your session files. This will ensure no matter what DAW you are using in the future, you can still at least import WAV files in as those don't seem to be going anywhere. This has saved me some heartache as I've had to switch DAWs a few times in my career.
That is a really good tip. I have a video to this end called "Preparing your tracks for another studio" th-cam.com/video/_CmFgJoKxTU/w-d-xo.html But certainly this would have been good to include here. Time constraints considered.
Great video. Excellent advice in here from hard learned experience. The fear of missing out is a real struggle for me and a lot of people. Probably why I keep paying the annual upgrade fee for Protools updates despite the fact that there has been little of note for anything I use.
#TIMEPOINT 11:25 *There is ABSOLUTELY NO SUCH THING as **#THECLOUD**! "The Cloud" is nothing more than, "SOMEONE ELSES COMPUTER!" ....... Let that sit in.*
I sold all my studio gear 15 years ago. I retrospect, the most analog chain is the best solution. All my old software now dosen't work. Now i'm starting over but the last piece of my new studio will be a computer. 👍 I still have all my demo's on cassete and they still work.. but whaut I add on hard drive is now not retreivable.
This is just so true. Frightening and disgusting, but true. If your hardware/software configuration is stable and working, do not upgrade anything. Do not allow your computer to talk on the phone -because it's working for someone else. Treat what works reliably like a machine and run it till the wheels come off. Thankfully, sound will always be analogue.
#TIMEPOINT 21:20 *That is called RULE OF ABANDONMENT IN TRUST LAW!* ....You showed verifiable absolute proof that the gear was purchased and not stolen and then they spent a statutory amount of time searching for the actually original owner and could not find them + the gear WAS NOT reported as stolen... So they simply released a NEW LICENSE I YOUR NAME for the product. In commerce this is called REMAINING IN HONOR! .... I was able to get a NATIVE INSTRUMENTS MASCHINE MK3 meant condition using RULE OF ABANDONMENT IN TRUST LAW for $10*
Beware that it does have a limited life and will degrade, in some cases less than 10 years. Best to do some research to see what format/maintenance is best for you.
Do Macs even get "Blue screens of death"? I know they do get "kernal panics" sometimes. I've never used a PPC Mac so I've have zero experience with the errors in PPC.
It happened to me, but only once. I had forgotten about those kernel panicks. I drove that computer for a decade or more having bought it used in the first place.
@@devon-graves-studio-D Cool. I have the same Mac Pro as yours. The only time I got a kernal panic was when I had some malfunctioning RAM or buggy usb 3.0 drivers. Other than that stable as hell just like yours. Running Pro Tools 10HD with Motu audio interface on OS X 10.9(Mavericks)
ILok double thumvs up❤

All the best to you. The new Macs are superb.

Well said!
Most hardware that runs on software also runs with onboard controls. Wes Audio Units even allow you to save presets on the device

Thank you for the knowledge :)
What are your thoughts for using something like ADAT for backup? I've had a couple old backup hard drives that just failed from sitting in storage.
Beware that it does have a limited life and will degrade, in some cases less than 10 years. Best to do some research to see what format/maintenance is best for you.
ADATs fail too often and the bit rate is not 24 bits. I would rather use DVDs if I had no other option.

Intel based Macs?. Haven't seen any on my M chips, thankfully.
