Reliving The War takes a look at the Monday Night Wars on a weekly basis. WWF Raw is War on USA Network and WCW Monday Nitro on TNT went head-to-head every Monday night in a TV ratings battle, leading to both companies putting on some of very memorable matches and moments. This series aims to cover every single match and promo during the whole Monday Night War.
This week on Raw Cactus Jack takes on Chainsaw Charlie in a hardcore match. The New Age Outlaws decide to interfere, resulting in Cactus and Chainsaw getting pushed off the Raw is War stage while in a dumpster. Shawn Michaels and Triple H tell the Outlaws that actions like this will get them over and get them recognized.
On WCW Nitro Sting wrestles Macho Man Randy Savage in the main event. Savage continues to have issues with Hollywood Hulk Hogan and the nWo, and The Steiner Brothers continue to have problems when they face Buff Bagwell and Kevin Nash.

I get this feeling often. I work in Med Surg floor of a hospital and usually work Wednesday nights. Waking up on Thursday afternoon to this notification is always a buzz feeling. 🙌
I normally think Wednesday is Thursday and get upset then have this same experience the next day

Wrestling Bios is definitely in my top three, possibly number 1 of those 3, lol.
I try to watch an episode during breakfast and lunch.
You accidentally said 'Vincent goes for the moonsault' and it made me laugh imagining Vincent actually performing a moonsault.
I legit remember being at this Raw show as a 6 year old. In the aftermath of the dumpster spot, I legit thought Cactus and Terry were dead.
It was one of the better moments under Russo of trying to make it look like something unscripted happened. The whole look of the roster out on and around the stage, wondering if Foley and Funk were seriously hurt, and Vince even seeming to treat it like Road Dogg and Gunn went too far, made it definitely feel real and off script.
@@coryshannon3815 agreed and looking back on it, the whole them running the ring later in the show in gowns with the IV poles kinda ruined it lol

Austin got thrown in a river and people loved it, the ratings and crowd reaction matters!
As much as Thunder could be a hit or miss show, I always liked the entrance set that we see debuting here. The industrial look to it, with the "lightning" lighting effects, made it visually appealing.
Thunder is okay but it's a average show. WCW Saturday Night is still a thing and that got debunked for Nitro and Thunder. The Power Plant was like NXT.
Sadly Thunder would be neglected, from only a few weeks after it’s debut. It’s one of the major things which helped with the downfall of WCW, over saturation and over exposure. Being forced to have a weekly wrestling B show, no one cared about and no one wanted too book. They should have kept Nitro at 2 hours each week also, 3 hours was overkill.
It wasn’t until 99 that WWF would show how a B show should be properly put together when Smackdown debuted.
The only set that looked as good or better than this version of the Thunder set was the OG Smackdown set with the giant fist.

I NEED that Blackman/cold as ice mash up. That's actually pretty dope.
I loved that entire opening for this RAW from the "State of DX" skit to the opening promo. As soon as Austin hits the ring the tone turns on a dime to 100% serious and it did a tremendous job at selling the Mania main event. The dumpster attack was interesting, but then they completely beat it into the ground showing replays over and over.

Great recap. I remember watching all of this live and everyone involved -- and I mean EVERYONE -- in the Outlaws/Cactus Jack & Terry Funk angle was just brilliant 👏. The wrestlers involved, the officials, the staff, the announcers, McMahon himself. You can see the live audience is hushed. This angle made the New Age Outlaws. So well done at the time.
And to think that both Billy Gunn and Jessie James were in the WWF during the New Generaton era in 94/95. It took them this to get over finally in 98...and had to team up to do so.
Hard to believe that it wouldn't be the last memorable Mick Foley bump to happen in 98, either.

I think on his little "OYDK" Podcast Road Dogg, thanked Mick and Terry for putting them over like that.
Honestly, thank the entire Roster, everyone came out to put that over, you had the boys brawlin' near the stage, Savio ridin' in the Ambulance, and Sunny out there screamin' n holdin' Terry's hand while he's "Convulsing".
All in all, an absolute Fantastic Piece of Television.
A drunken (at that time) Jake Roberts laid such words of wisdom to Raven.
My favorite part of the dumpster elbow drop was all the styrofoam peanuts flying out.
This is Austin's first match on Raw since July 28, 1997.
Sting had that post-Starrcade match with Hogan on the December 29th Nitro.

Raven was obviously quoting Optimus Prime from the movie Masters of the Universe directed by George Michael.
I have to imagine that the man who gave Raven that advice has to be John Cleese when Raven competed in the Rat Race.

The favorite part of my day is forgetting it's a Thursday and then coming home and having a new Reliving The War to watch and remembering it's only one more day to the weekend.

Two things: The Texas nWo shirt that Vincent was wearing was pretty sweet. And secondly, Cactus Jack suplexing that ladder onto Terry Funk stands out so much more now after hearing Mick’s latest podcast today.
This stone cold promo is hands down one of my favorites the way Austin walks down and says he’s going to kick Shawn’s ass and take his title is amazing also when Shawn’s rips his muscle shirt and stone cold looks at him like really then in the end stone cold rips his whole tshirt off like a badass💯 🥶

The Outlaws and Cactus/Funk dumpster spot was great, and how it merged them with DX afterwards was huge. All of it setting up the 8-Man Tag and bigger things in the future, RAW was starting to run on all cylinders at this time as it built towards Mania.
Who would have thought they would have been that successful right after losing Bret hart and having very little undertaker during this time period? These guys really started to take off with some meaningful wrestlers and story lines.

the dumpster thing worked really well with how the other wrestlers were pissed. Hated to see Owen get beat up again, but it happened to Austin too. Classic promo at the beginning.

I've been dreading this day. While I watch your other content regularly I only started watching reliving the war a couple of months ago and I've finally caught up. It's an awesome series and now I'll be eagerly waiting for the new episode each week!

Raven for his advice from Johny Polo’s stepdad, Bobby Henan.
One of the moments I remember really well from the Monday night wars is the Terry Funk and Mick Foley matches/ team ups. By that time I was watching Raw every Monday in large part because I had become a big fan of Mick Foley. One of the best things WWE did for Foley is having him do that interview with Jim Ross as Mankind. Getting to know a little bit more about the person Mick Foley through that interview, really made him a lot more likeable and helped to humanize Mankind.
I've been enjoying your videos for almost a year now, although I was casually watching in the early 90's, 97-98 is where my wrestling obsession truly took off. I was graduating middle school around this time and we were all talking about wrestling. Good times!

The dumpster spot and aftermath was brilliant, i remember watching this originally and although we all know what wrestling is all about i felt this definitely blurred the lines between whats real and whats entertainment. Now it looks tame frankly but very different back then, totally agree we're desensitised now

I don't know..from the second I first saws it, I was laughing at it. Not just because we had JUST seen all the Styrofoam peanuts fly out, but we had already become plenty desensitized to Foley and people who knew Funk knew that as well. This looked very tame compared to what they did. I literally remember my friends and I joking that that dumpster thing was probably a ride at Action Park. Which, granted, meant it was dangerous, but not THAT dangerous. But still..they fell like 5 feet while surrounded by materials designed to absorb shock and the dumpster fell onto a table to absorb more shock. Why is that any worse than falling from a much higher height with your unprotected body.

Raven's advice source, Jake Roberts. While waiting outside the rehab center to pickup smackhead Kidman, Raven had a chat with Roberts who was in rehab himself and was hanging around outside having a smoke.
Fresh off of taking a super stressful calculus exam, and i know Reliving The War will make me feel a hell of a lot better! Play that f**kin music, indeed!

You had Flair vs. Bret, Bulldog vs. Mongo. Damn, talk about a massive ball drop. I would have loved to have seen Flair reform the Horsemen to fight the Hart Foundation. What a miss by Bischoff.
And the wild card would have been Chris Benoit, which side would he choose. My guess the horsemen needed a fourth malenko could have joined. Chris Jericho would have joined the Hart foundation. Bret could have calmed Jericho down and focused more. So Benoit being the wild card his history with the horsemen or being trained by the Harts.

Holy cow it took me awhile to realize this was the first wrestling event I ever went to. The only WCW event I saw in San Antonio. Amazing it didn't click until the main event I remember seeing Sting and Savage.
