Im not so sure of that though he might have been a wrestling fan but it had nothing to do with money. He was a troubled kid with a sick mom and a dad who wasn't there. By the time he was 13 he had a rap sheet 38 crimes long. While he was in Juvi a detention officer took him under his wing and recognized his talent at fighting. He trained him a bit and introduced him to legendary boxing trainer Cus D'Amato.
Cus took him in like he was his own kid and when Tysons mom died Cus outright adopted him. Cus was tough but fair with him and did his best to keep him on the straight and narrow.
He had his first professional boxing match at 18 and the rest is history. He was wrapped up so quickly in the boxing world I'm not sure he ever really had time to think it through or choose a profession.
His profession was chosen by the time he was 13. He was either going to make some money boxing or die poor boxing but boxing was his only outlet to the streets.

Another awesome upload from the wrestling channel on the planet with the most jam.
The Tyson Austin angle was one of the most important moments in the “war”. It started the swing of momentum back to WWF and where as WCW were still running with the same old NWO on top. WWF were going from strength to strength. Gaining mainstream, worldwide attention. WCW had tried to gain mainstream attention in the past, with celebrities very few people outside of the states cared about, however failed. I think from this week on WWF are going to start running away with the week to week comparison and before long will be back on top in the ratings, leaving WCW for dust.
Can you imagine in an alternative play of events. Tyson not playing along. Taking offence to Austin and knocking him out? How embarrassing would that have been to Austin and the WWF and how would that have effected things moving forward?
Also during 97 Shamrock called Tyson out and never got a reply. It never gets mentioned. However at this time both men were in the same company at the same time. I wonder what would have happened if it was given a green light and we got a shoot fight between Shamrock and Tyson?

I was at the Superdome for this Nitro - a fun part of this was some of the wrestlers locker rooms were on the opposite side of the Dome from where the entrance was. There used to be a large gap between the 1st deck stands and the concourse so when crossing between the two you could see below and heckle wrestlers walking back and forth. Went to the bathroom during a commercial break and Eddie was walking to the back - he was getting heckled big time! Could tell he loved it too, giving people the finger with a smile on his face.

Marty was brought in to be a high profile, high ability (especially at selling), well liked jobber. Yes WCW had a stacked roster, but they really didn't have a lot of guys who they could use as Jobbers that would actually mean something when he put them over. They probably should have given him a couple of wins against local talent types so that he wouldn't be a strict jobber and not lose every match.

23:18 Fantastic take here. Great example of why the common "Starrcade 97 was the beginning of the end" narrative is just flat-out wrong. WCW was still getting tremendous heat all up and down the card in the early months of 1998.
Their death was more of a slow one. People prefer quick and simple hot takes over nuance, but the truth is that they made a series of mistakes in late 1998 and early 1999 that led to the company's downfall.
In fact, if there was any one thing that hurt the company tremendously in late 97/early 98, it was probably the creation of Thunder. The company was too much of a mess to pull off 5 hours of primetime programming on a weekly basis. Thunder hurt the product way more than the outcome of Sting/Hogan at Starrcade.
Edit: wow, apparently great minds think alike because you covered that right after the Sting save. Nice!

you're still improving and getting more confident video by video, it's been awesome to be a part of your growth and this is by far the best series I've watched probably about anything, not just wrestling.

1998 was the craziest year for WWF, they made so many outrageous matches which were pure entertainment

It would've been interesting to see Don King and Vince McMahon working as a heel duo. With them being real life heels and all.

I personally wonder if Eric was beginning to get nervous at this point. The ratings gap was shrinking and Tyson's arrival was a big cue for mainstream attention. WWF felt like they were just getting more and more momentum.

A Relieving the War episode on my Birthday, awesome stuff as always, love the series and it's ongoing little gags, I hope "He must be good at it" becomes a recurring joke for when You Suck chants happen :D

I'm excited to see your review of Souled Out. It was the only PPV I have ever been to. I was lucky enough to be 4th row on the floor. Macho and Lex spilled into the crowd about 10 feet from me. Plus seeing the Giant dumped on his head from a botched Nash powerbomb. The ref did the injury signal right away. Plus, Miss Elizabeth is gorgeous in person.

With everything going on in WWE and AEW right now the timing of your Reliving The War series and what's going on in WCW and WWF at this point is oddly fitting to what's going on right now.

People think it was Tyson on RAW that shifted the Monday Night Wars to WWF taking the lead. It's possible. But in actuality it was WCW not booking Alex Wright on Nitro for like 8 weeks straight.

Always really liked Martel. Really happy to see he got a great reaction here. I will never forget being a kid and watching WWF Saturday Morning Wrestling. Always just squash matches but on this particular episode Strike Force beat the Hart Foundation for the belts. A belt change on that show was unheard of. Anvil submitted to Martel's Boston Crab. Also remember when the Hart's cut their first promo after losing and the Anvil saying that the ref just asked him if it hurt. He never asked if he wanted to submit....just if it hurt. And it did hirt so the Anvil was just telling the truth. Great stuff!

I was at this Raw and can remember that on the local Fresno news later that night, they interviewed Vince in character immediately after this and it was amazing. I wish I could find it somewhere online.

I setup my WWE 2K universe to basically just be this era and eliminated most of the current roster. Kinda like playing it while watching these.

Looking at Scott Steiner then compared to now, there are STILL people out there saying he doesn't use steroids. There's growth, then there's GROWTH. He isn't superhuman, and you don't get to look like he does without chemical help.
