***** To be fair Anthony did mention the singer thing and said "I have no idea" when it came to whether or not they have new singers or if they just switch costumes.
Agreed bro. I feel like the Satan stuff limits creativity. There's a great interview with Chuck Schuldiner from Death where he says singing about demons and the like is 'foolish.'
@@ananyanwu To pimp a butterfly had like 10 different producers and 20 guest musicians on it. Meliora was all written by a single person Tobias Forge who writes all the instruments and vocals/lyrics. A real musical genius unlike Kendrick.
SpiritBreath What part of that was hard for you to understand? Never seen a band live before? I've seen Iron Maiden live too and although they make awesome music, they were incredibly underwhelming.
***** I don't doubt that. And I mean, they were good, but just not as epic as I thought a Maiden show was going to be. But this was at Sonisphere last year so maybe they are better when it's their show.
Vocalist change? If they did they sound identical record to record.... anyway im very excited to hear this one! it completely missed my radar. Also that Mercyful Fate record is blinding!
i have listened to rock music since i was born, and anyone with a slightly decent taste in rock music should be able to tell you majesty is a one of the best tracks ghost ever did , that song transcends such melody and complex time signature changes after this i will stop listening his critical review....
It took me couple of years to love From the pinacle ti the Pit. I just couldn't get it and couple of weeks ago i just got it! It is strange when you know the song and get it only after 2-3 years) Maybe my taste was more poor ...
I think Tobias (Papa) changes his vocal style ever so slightly depending on "the age of Papa", so the first Papa was meant to be in his 60s, Papa II was meant to be in his early-to-mid 50s and this current Papa is meant to be roughly the same age though "he" appears far younger and the vocals seem for more enthusiastic and full. I think it adds to the band's theatrical edge, though I agree with you on the second album, really not my cup of tea with the more Pop side.
Tom Collings Agreed. Forge is definitely changing his vocal style ever so slightly with each album to reflect the changing of the Papas. Not to mention this Papa is much more talkative at live shows than his predecessors. To me it was pretty obvious that Papa III was gonna have some new vocal experimentations from the moment "Cirice" was released when he belted that prolonged "Yoooou-whoaaaa-oh-ohhhh" during the closing chorus. Papa I and II never got close to such a flourished vocal line. As you said, enthusiastic and full. Very excellent attention to detail in the songwriting by the band.
Don't Break the Oath is an incredible record. Props for recommending it. Agree with the review too, this is the first time in a long time that I've fallen in love with an album.
Some of my all-time favorite bass riffs are from "Majesty", "From the Pinnacle to the Pit", and "Absolution". I hardly ever find 3 songs on one album where the bass carries the song so well and is just flat out impressive. "From the Pinnacle to the Pit" is very fun to play on bass. It's one of those bass lines that moves your fingers across the fret-board in a satisfying way. Sadly, this album was the last Ghost album that I truly enjoyed. Hope they go old school one more time on a future album!
BREAKING NEWS!!!!! Because of Cal Chuchesta's recent mixtape "The New CALassic", Mr. Chuchesta will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a statue in the city of Los Angeles to go along with his star. The mixtape has received overwhelmingly excellent reviews from numerous music critics. The mixtape is also widely considered to be the greatest music project in human history.
I think that on this album, Ghost kinda met the experimentation of Infesstium (which I thought was pretty good) with the dark, gloomy heaviness of Opus Eponymous, and that's why it's so good. I think you're right on the number with the atmosphere, the way Ghost creates their world reminds me of older BoS, Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath records while they still take influence from other rock sub-genres like you mentioned. Great review Anthony, and I'm super hyped for when the album drops in two days.
I don't really disagree with Anthony's opinions on it but I still enjoy it, it's got some good stuff on it. It was the album that took them to the next level, even saw them during that tour. Not as good as Meliora but I like it.
Oh man I love this album. The singles blew me away and the rest of the album DID NOT disappoint. Although I do have 2 minor complaints, one of them is that the closing track wasn't very good. The song wasn't bad, but it kind of lacked the epicness of an album closer. My 2nd complaint is that the album is a little too short in my opinion. Sure, 41 minutes isn't necessarily a lacking amount of time. I just felt if they maybe bumped it up to 45 or 50 minutes then this album might have been much better. Overall, killer album. One of my favorites so far this year. 9.5/10 (decent 9) Best Ghost album yet if you ask me.
Giant Squid I agree, the only thing I'm sad about is that Devil's Church could've turned into such an epic song. But still, I am super happy with how this album turned out.
Seven years late I know but listen to Zenith if you haven't. Both musically and lyrically it's the true closer to the album. I think they just couldn't include it because of some copright dispute or something
Wow, what a fantastic review, so great to see you giving it such a high grade. I feel a 8.5, but it's still a damn good album, one of my favorites this year.
Seeing Ghost live back when they toured with Opeth and Mastadon, was my first taste of the band. Looking for reviews on the album brought me to this channel for the first time. It's like a little surprise reunion in my subscription list. I had no idea they had a new album out and hearing that it was better than the 2nd album made me ecstatic. Hey Anthony I just watched your old Review of Opus Eponymous, which I think still remains my favourite Ghost album. But the main point is can you run through your backyard again and scream the Bands name and Album title again? That was so cool back in the day :D
It’s good to see arena rock back in vogue again. I missed the days when bands like Pink Floyd, King Diamond, Alice Cooper and Iron Maiden would put on a show.
Hey Anthony. I managed to focus on your wallpaper in the bottom left corner and created a 'magic eye' effect, if you remember that from the 90s. Made your hand flourishes appear stereoscopic. Highly recommend everyone do it if they can. I'm feeling a strong 9, on your wallpaper.
Good review Anthony. I was confused on the borderline hour long PowerPoint presentation section of the review when you discussed how to not cross the streams but still very interesting video!
My housemate showed us the "Year Zero live at Music Feeds Studio" video right before Christmas. My husband and I have not stopped listening to Ghost since. He even plays it at work (cook for a vegetarian restaurant in "HippieVille") and none of the customers ever seem to notice what it is they're listening to. I love this band to pieces. I have to go play it...riiiight.. now. ;) (p.s. I agree about Mummy Dust, but it IS growing on me...like mold on an old headstone, hehehe.)
Been playing Meliora ad nauseum since I found the full album on TH-cam. A classic! Ghost really put the time into this one, and perhaps even some personnel changes in the rhythm section. A thing of beauty, this. Thanks for reviewing, Tony! The new Krallice next, please.... if you haven't already.
I'm looking forward to hearing this. I actually liked their sophomore record too, but when I heard "Cirice" for the first time, I was instantly blown away by it.
I loved this review. I think you nailed quite accurately how I felt about all 3 Ghost Albums. Some people say Ghost is overrated, or like they're not anything special, but they are doing really neat stuff. I did get a strong sense of theater, presentation, and careful orchestration on this one. I give solid 8, maybe 8.5, but perhaps I need another listen.
Did not actually expect you to like this so much. Maybe a 7 but not a fruugen 9! Good review as usual, I'll have to listen to it a few more times, because at the moment I'm just feeling like 2 or 3 tracks from it and that's it : x
Hi lad! First, I really like your videos and found some great music and inspiration because of you. Thank you! Can I make a suggestion? You could put the music genre in the video title or in the info. It would be way more convenient for your viewers to know that instantly. For example, I know that I really don't like Black Metal or Noise, but you review a lot of them, so I end up spending a lot of time clicking through the videos. Loving the recommendation for Mercyful Fate's Don't Break The Oath. Similarly occult and a bit theatrical. Gypsy and Come To The Sabbath are probably the best introductions to the band from that album.
Nice, honest review...I picked up the 'limited' gray smoke version from (cough, cough) Hot Topic earlier today (Friday) because I've ALWAYS been prone to get the pressing that only a few own, I do wish that I knew the amount(?) though. All and all, I've been enjoying this quite a lot...I guess I'm one of the few who loved their 2nd album too and will get to see them again in SF in October. Once again, great review👍.
I loved this album. A solid mix between their previous two albums. I love watching bands evolve through every release. I honestly don't know where the band is going to musically next album. I think they have to do a lot to top Meliora.
i was never really that into Ghost until i heard Cirice. Then i gave them a listen, checked some live shows on youtube and i must say it changed my opinion of the band. I ordered Meliora and i have not been disappointed, I think it is a pretty good album, its refreshing and its sound on some songs could come out of the late 60s. Its creepy at times, metal at times, psychedelic at times, overall the production and arrangement was brilliant.
I'm a little late to comment, but you do know it's still the same vocalist from their debut record, the only member that has left was the bass player. they now have a female bass player.
For me this was a 10, I LOVE this album, I ordered the LP because I didn't want brick walled shit...I don't even have a record player but I am buying one...
ohh baby! cant wait to listen... been playing the singles for a while!! can we say papa III is goat papa?! great review! glad they didnt slum the new LP.
I can't get why people say Infestissumam didn't live up to the hype. That album is amazing, it has so many different styles and sounds all done with great lyrics and music. Everyone has an opinion and I replspect that, but don't sell that album short, it really is an outstanding record. all 3 albums are completely different and phenomenal in their own ways!
"Ooooooooh doobie doo boo" those lyrics though. I will say that the Infestessimum album was just as solid as Opus and Meliora were. The sophomore album has a lot of hidden gems in it, literally speaking too. Jigolo Har Megiddo is probably one of my favorite songs and I feel it doesn't get as much credit as it deserves.
yea idk what this guys talking about. the second album is fantastic. just as good as meliora in my opinion. the first album wasnt my favorite but it wasnt bad
Anthony Rodriguez It really depends on one's tastes. He never said it was particularly bad, he just didn't like the direction the band went with it, a lot of people have the same opinion. There's nothing wrong with that.

The didn't say the word "Satan" 1 time on this record.
Biggest disappointment
I believe it was intentional. To enable them to appeal to mainstream audiences. The songs are good but not as blunt and direct as Opus' songs.
They didn't need to...the song "He Is" is totally thematically about Satan.
I actually appreciated that. Everytime they said "Satan" on Opus Eponymous I cringed a little bit. It just adds too much cheese, imo.
Agreed bro. I feel like the Satan stuff limits creativity. There's a great interview with Chuck Schuldiner from Death where he says singing about demons and the like is 'foolish.'
my 61 year old father loves Ghost, and his favorite song by them is He Is. he said it's the best "metal" song he has ever listened to.
To be fair, he grew up around the era of sabbath, zeppelin, blue oyster cult, and deep purple so that makes total sense
How can you not like Deus in Absentia?
it's one of the best for me and I heard it in Stockholm being premiered! it was so f*cking good!!
Fantastic finale!
IKR?!? One of the best songs on the album!
He did say a lot of nice things about the track. You have to remember he has a particularly critical mind.

Great album from Ghost. My favorite album from this Swedish metal band so far..
REVIEW PREQUELLE
I loved this album. A solid mix between their previous two albums. I love watching bands evolve through every release. I honestly don't know where the band is going to musically next album. I think they have to do a lot to top Meliora.
It's a fantastic album by Ghost. It's their best by far, and will take them into the big league.
Never listened to Ghost before but after this review Mr. Fantano imma dive on into their discography! I have high hopes!
Reviews Meliora. Rails on the second record for almost 3 minutes first.
i was never really that into Ghost until i heard Cirice.
I hate this kind of music but goddamn this record is fucking amazing
Dunno who this Cal guy is but he boutta take off after this mixtape 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm a little late to comment, but you do know it's still the same vocalist from their debut record, the only member that has left was the bass player. they now have a female bass player.
Nope, there have been several personnel changes in the band since it's beginning.
Majesty has really grown for me, one of my favourites on the album now.
It’s funny to come back and think of a time before we knew it was Tobias Forge singing the whole time....simpler times
DBTO in the background? My admiration for you just grew 10 fold. One of the best metal albums ever.
"Mummy Dust" I think is an ode to Metallica, musically - Leper Messiah, lyrically - Creeping Death
Papa Emeritus I,II, and III are all the same vocalist just to clear that up. It's all part of the Ghost theatrics. Solid review, by the way.
"Majesty" is my fav but I understand your point - it is... well Ghost...
Square Hammer is legit underrated
LEYLAND GAMER came back here to say just that
How fitting you have a Merciful Fate album in the background.
If you have Ghosts...
you have everything
you can say anything you want
And you can do anything you wanna do
+Destiny Hernandez if you have ghosts...
You have everything
"Ooooooooh doobie doo boo" those lyrics though. I will say that the Infestessimum album was just as solid as Opus and Meliora were. The sophomore album has a lot of hidden gems in it, literally speaking too. Jigolo Har Megiddo is probably one of my favorite songs and I feel it doesn't get as much credit as it deserves.
Calthony Chuchestano
Caloincidence? I think not.
Editing on this review 10/10 👌🏾
Please do their new album Prequelle !
Uncle Acid and the deadbeats are releasing a new album the 4th of september.
I need you to review it!
The second album was great
a Their best album IMO. Monstrance Clock is killer
yea idk what this guys talking about. the second album is fantastic. just as good as meliora in my opinion. the first album wasnt my favorite but it wasnt bad
Anthony Rodriguez It really depends on one's tastes. He never said it was particularly bad, he just didn't like the direction the band went with it, a lot of people have the same opinion. There's nothing wrong with that.
I'm not too fond of that album myself, but Monstrance Clock is enough to justify its existence.
