Prequelle may be slightly less edgy than Ghost's previous work, but is one of the band's most well written and produced batches of songs to date, and its loose concept keeps things just fresh enough.

So refreshing to see a review of this album by someone who's not a metal elitist. It was such a good album I feel, and it's a shame people don't want to appreciate it because it's "not metal".
Neoxie Yeah, people go into Ghost expecting metal, and then hate it because it isn't metal. Ghost has even gone on record saying they aren't a metal band. It's pretty sad since I think they're great, but you can't please everyone
Neoxie You've got a well formed nose.
Why would a "metal elitist" review this album? It couldn't be further from metal

Honestly, I love Helvetesfonster. The beginning is cliche/unnecessary but the end with the accoustic guitars and the wind in the trees effect really paints a perfect picture of the anguish of a dead/dying loved one in a God forsaken land. I feel it leads into Life Eternal seamlessly. The last few minutes of the song are haunting and bring depth. Overlooked for sure.
On the contrary, I think the non-poetry of “Pro Memoria” is an effective lyrical tactic. Rather than sweeten the message with metaphors, it’s a very chilling and sobering reminder of the inevitability of death. You can avoid thinking about it, but you can’t avoid it altogether.
its also true to the name of the song "pro memoria", "to remember"- and the best way to do this is with simple and direct lyrical usage, the charm in this song is the simplicity of the chorus in contrast with the grand and beautiful instrumentals, and also, the atmosphere.
It's so corny my ballsack shrunk
I agree Big. The directness cuts through the bullshit. Theres no spoonful of sugar to help it go down. Its pure and powerful.
My thoughts excactly. I challenge anyone to come up with a metaphor about mortality that hasn’t been done to death already (pun intended).
Its corny but sure you look at it in a deeper way of you like lol
Miasma is so great.
ARW The ending with the solos is just too good. The synth, the guitars, the sax... Definitely top 5 Ghost songs imo

Ah, yes, love Papa Emmyrightus, but what about Cardinal Copicmarker?

Ghost's second record is beyond underrated honestly
Agreed. I usually “mark” out to Secular Haze a lot.
Chakra #5 say it louder for those in the back.
Its my favourite from them! The arrangement of songs is cinematic and I absolutely dont dislike a single thing on it.
Too bad that Fantano doesn't understand songs like Idolatrine.
Yeah year zero, monstrance clock and secular haze are some of ghost's best songs
I was never a big Ghost fan before but I absolutely adore this album.
Cause it’s such a accessibile album it’s got something for everyone I can’t imagine anyone not liking it
I think its best to look at these albums in the context of their Papa or Frontman for the album
Papa 1 was the establishment, the old guard with his album being heavier and darker with more growl
Papa 2 Was newer but still authoritative and a part of the established culture so his was more melodic but still held remnants of the heavier predecessor. And in interviews, he seems to realize he is not the big introduction nor the amazing climax, he is the forgettable follow up
Papa 3 was meant to surmize a younger and energetic (and sexual) figure, where his songs and preformances displayed this; even the heavier songs were high energy and somewhat melodic or sweet.
Cardinal Copia is goofy, uninitiated, but ambitious and you can see this in his stage presence and music. He jokes, he dances, he interacts with his ghouls much more, and in his songs hes very adamant about his growing strength.
Papa 3 the goat
And now Papa 4 is out here looking proper terrifying and decked in jewels like some sort of satanic drag queen, and by satan am I ready for what storm he's gonna bring
@@swiftlymurmurs Yeeesssssss! Papa IV is already my favorite Papa and he hasn't -technically (if you ignore that he was Cardinal Copia)- released an album yet. So excited!

In remember melon putting dance macabre in the worst of one of his weekly track roundups, and now it's one of his favorites.....That's how ghost works, they sneak up on you and worm their way into your head. I hated dance macabre at first, until a week later I realized I had only heard it once and had been singing it ever since.
you are right on...it takes me like 2 solid weeks of listening to NO Ghost, to get a Ghost song out of my head, particularly, Cirice, Dance Macabre, He Is, Bible, Elizabeth, Zombie Queen and Rats. I can't get them out of my head once they are in there. And as cheesy as some of them are, I just love them. The cheesiness is just enough to make it seem deeply serious, and so stinking catchy. Forge knows exactly what he's doing. I honestly can't wait for the next album!
This is an album that gets better with each listen
I was like that with Rats. But then you have to listen again and again to each of their song to know and understand it
I agree with the 8/10. It was indeed a very strong album with great songwriting. It definitely hit the mark in my opinion

Your dislike of Infestissuman still makes me laugh.
Also Pro Memoria is great. And the chorus is catchy so I respectfully disagree.
IMO Infestissumam is their best album
I've loved all their albums so far, even their EP's.
TheRushnakdeltarawen You're right it is. I've been saying that same thing for years. I'll never understand why people hate it.
Theres like 1 or 2 songs i dislike on that album, but overall id say its really good.
Theres one thing i didn't like on infestissuman and it was the production. It was flat sounding to me, especially compared with Meliora and this
They're doing great, why would anyone want them to vomit out the same stuff in every album they make?
I met Cardinal Copia 3 days ago, it was so great to meet him. what i love about ghost is how no two of there albums sound the same. awesome band.
dissing secular haze
say sike right now
Who else thought it was gonna be a 6/10?
Yep that's the score I predicted
John Stewart I knew from the second I heard it it was an 8/10. Only thing not worth having on it is Pro Memoria. The fucking hook is so corny just thinking about it now makes me cringe a little bit. But the rest of the album is great stuff. Miasma is my favorite song of the year this year period.
YouGot2BeKitten TM especially knowing that papa 0 plays the sax solo in the live shows.
Me, after dance macabre the record sucks
giovanni fiorini Witch Image and Life Eternal are great. Pro Memoria has a really bad and out of place refrain but the song still has great aspects
Pro Memoriam's chorus, while blunt, is a pretty clear reference to the "memento mori" credo of the middle ages, which literally meant "remember about dying", which had to do with the Christian idea that life was really all about becoming worthy of an afterlife; the earthly life thereby only being legitimized by death
So that could be why the chorus is so blunt, the idea it was referencing was pretty blunt
I like the album, but there isn't enough Satan.
I agree! Hail the hail the rebel chief!
That's a dumb metric to critique albums by tho lmao
Nah, the focus here was on plagues, disasters, dying - Satan didn't need too much mention here, that would bloat the album, in my opinion.
Look at the cover
Thank God for that!
Someone left a comment on my video saying the album starts off with heavier tracks and fades in energy as it goes because it's mimicking the stages of the plague. I thought I'd share that here, it's a really interesting way to listen to the album with that in mind!
You genuinely just blew my mind
Infetissuman was bad!? FOH Anthony.
Very good and honest review. Clearly pointing out what’s different and that like Infestissumam may be slightly divisive among the fans but overall an excellent effort that will help grow their sound. Thanks for pointing out what the proper lyrics for Dance Macabre are, props for that

Makes me feel like I'm in a dark Fantasy novel. The Piano/Keyboard it great. Is that a Flute in the begin, it should be. Love It!
And if you have a subwoofer, the bass goes so low.
I do not have a Subwoofer, but do I have some really nice earphones and have the bass level all the way up. I can hear that low-end Bass, must be shaking the house. Is that a Flute at 0:45? I'm sure it a Keyboard but I want to be a Flute.

Those weird chords in the beginning of Witch Image are 9ths. Commonly called "The Devils Interval." Back in the day, they said if you could properly hear that interval, that you were possessed
.
This is untrue. “The Devil’s Interval” was the tritone. The idea that the sound was considered “demonic” in the old days has been largely discredited by academia in recent years.

Thanks again. Keep up the good work, Melon!
Basically agree with most of what was said in the video. I still think their 2nd album wasn't bad, but I'm not a music critic. So he's more attuned to some things than I am. Also, opinions.
Infestissumam isn't bad songwriting wise (outside of some questionable stuff like Jigolo Har Meggido that translates much better to their acoustic sets), but actual sound of that album is horrible. The whole thing is over compressed with little body to any of the instruments, especially the guitars. Those songs are incredible when they're played live though.
I love Infestissumam
Timothy E. And it was mastered WAY too loud. You can hear guitar riffs clipping all over the place.
It's really a spotty album. I get what they were trying to do, I mean how do you top a masterpiece like their first. So they did an album full of homages to all kinds of different styles, and they technically do it all well. But in the end there are only about 4 really awesome tracks, a couple of real stinkers, and the rest just kinda whatever. Meloria was better, but based off the two teaser tracks of this new one, I've pretty much stopped caring about the band anymore. Weak songs and generic "slick" production. The opposite of what made them so incredible when they came out.
Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. if u like to listen to it, cool.. if u don't , that's cool too. Who gives a fudge?
not only is this ablum great, the "a pale tour named death" tour live show was awesome
This guy gets it....I love Ghost but always viewed them as slightly campy even in their darker material. I love that every album sounds different and that they don’t seem to take themselves too seriously
I think where people get it wrong with ghost is that the theatrics are intentional! When they seem corny it’s for the sake of satire and the characteristics of the role Tobias is playing as each different Papa and in this case the Cardinal. I dunno. I just love ‘em.

My actual favorite song off this album is the Bonus song "It's A Sin", I was expecting it to be a throwaway cover song by The Pet Shop Boys. But Ghost surprised me and made it better than the original song lol.

This album definitly grew on me. On very first listen, I wasn't sure because it sounded more light, and Rats never really won me over.. But I put the record on as background music, and now it's one of my favorite albums right now. I cannot stop listening, with my favorites being Faith, Dance Macabre, Miasma. I LOVE this concept of a lighter (ironic?) tone. Dance Macabre is a fucking addictive 80s love song, but really about the plague/black death that swept over Europe during the Middle Ages. I just love how they manage that fine line of irony ("happy, careless" sound with dark meaning). Reminds me of He Is, which is just a happy-go-lucky, christian-rock sounding song, except it's about devil worship. Brilliant. Prequelle really grew on me and I love it now. I'm glad they're not afraid of experimenting and challenging the state of metal music. Not to be cheesy, but I actually feel like they're reviving it a bit. They're really pushing the boundaries and making it popular.
if you like how iron maiden and rush present themselves artistically, you probably like ghost.
this album is no question another great addition to the line up
One of the best albums this year. No question
Review Zeal & Ardor - Stranger Fruit
I've liked them from Opus and I for one loved the hair metal nods, the Rats riff hit me like something from Warren Demartini's repertoire, the lead guitar player of 80's LA metal giants Ratt. I assume that's all intentional, love the cheese and little jokes like that thrown in.
HelvetesFönster was a masterfully done instrumental.
I'd love to hear a review of Trouble's Edgewood album.
Having seen Ghost live since their lineup change, I definitely think this batch of Ghouls are more talented than the last one. The two instrumental songs on this album here are just them flexing their new muscles.
That may be true, but they aren't nearly as fun live.
Was really unsure of where you were gonna stand on this LP. That rating had me very pleased.
Also thank you for acknowledging Faith is treading familiar ground, that seems to be a good percentage of fans favourite track, but it felt very same-same to me.
KIDS SEE MELONSSSSS
Even though it’s about plagues it’s a reference also to how everybody is a plague these days. Which makes this album really dark.
Top 3 songs from this album: Rats, Witch Image, and See The Light
I love the album. Its so next level-ish for the band. And ive been to a concert of theirs this week and the songs they just WORK PERFECTLY for the stage. Geeeenius
Glad to hear it's good. Ghost is a real fun listen
A very good review! I think musically it's their most consistent and best yet but the 'theme' falls a little short because although The Plague is quoted as the theme, each song seems very loosely associated with it.
I totally love the new album and is artistically amazing 😉
Earthly Delight from Witch Image was a reference to Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights which there have been references painted to it on the main album cover.
Like some have said, I love pro memoria, and the don’t you forget about dying, it burned in my brain, so blunt and direct, it’s really what enamored me with the album in the beginning. And the following instrumental I found so tasteful, some of their best. And loved life eternal, I guess that sort of shit is just my vibe.
In case you were ever wondering, Earthly Delight was a reference to a late 15th century painting by Hieronymus Bosch which depicts mankind indulging in the fruits of the Garden and indulging in acts of lust and greed, while panels on each side of the painting shows heavenly and hellish imagery.
An extremely listenable and excellent record
Why do Fantano fans think “listenable” is high praise
Nice review man, I must say, I felt the same pre-album drop jitters that you did. Boy oh boy was I pleasantly surprised as I usually am with Ghost. In my opinion, best band of the 21st century this far with Horse the Band at a close 2nd best. This album is beautiful!

Dance Macabre is an absolute banger. The vocal harmonies and the keys really lift Papa up and support him well. This album is a modern take on Blue Oyster Cult imo.

Actually Pro Memoria is one of my favorite tracks... I think the edgy chorus is intended to be a reference to musicals like A Nightmare before Christmas etc. and it gives me shivers nevertheless.
