I’m sure that Jeff Lynne (founder of ELO) is VERY proud of Allison’s performance on this video. She’s found a way for this song, which is one of my life long favorites, to touch my heart in a different way, equally as enjoyable.

You know what's weird? She has some of the best Jazz club singer arm movements around, just incredibly expressive and perfect for the moments in the song. I assumed she had been doing it for many years to get that good.
But her other videos are generally her with a guitar ... and she is ridiculously young. I'm not sure she has ever performed like this before. Just a perfect natural.
She has a life full of amazing performances ahead of her.

A man is behind a machine gun firing his machine gun as his comrades, part of the resistance run away to the escape craft as the regime forces close in on the building, meanwhile somewhere else, the protagonist is on his knees in front of the tyrant as 1 man behind aims his long rifle at his head as it flashes back to the Machine gunner as he is overrun as he begins throwing fists at the enemy as his other comrades are shot and only 2 escape crafts make a way as the screen fades to black as the song ends on a gun shot.

The part where she sings 'Mr. Blue Sky please tell us why you had to go away for so long. Where did we go wrong?' reminds me of a post-apocalyptic era where a nuclear fallout covered the earth's atmosphere in dense clouds and the sky was no longer visible and people can only glimpse it very rarely. And when they ask 'Where did we go wrong?' Its rhetorical and satirical at the same time, as if they were begging for forgiveness for what they've done.

A roommate of mine from college (40 years ago!) sent me this video...I rattled off a response and figured I should just stick it up here too.
    ***
    I love everything about this!
The single-shot camera positioning is perfect.
All the performers in view (and wide focused).
The arrangement and audio-change-from-original decisions were great.
    AND THAT SINGER!
I'd never seen (nor heard) from her before.
Her vocals! Tremendously expressive. Binding and captivating enough that I'm actually able to take my eyes off the ice-cool bass player.
Her arm and hand gesticulation rival the Hindu goddess Durga (and she's got so much less to work with!).
Whatta dress! Daring in exactly the right way. Flattering.
15 bonus points for not reaching up or crossing her body when the lyrics say, "now his hand is on your shoulder." (We both know Mr. Night doesn't deserve that kind of deference!)
AND WHAT ABOUT THE MOST DRAMATIC CLOSING OF AUTOMATIC BLINDS IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD!
I'll make it a point to never (again) weep at auto-blind closure in deference to PMJ.
Or maybe I'll ALWAYS cry, remembering that sweet sweet time Allison Young kept me from complete despair in the dead-center middle of The Pandemic.
    =ONLY THINGS TO CONSIDER CHANGING=
Stupid fine points...change NOTHING and I'm still happy for eternity.
It's POSSIBLE Allison has freckles and she's using a concealer to hide them. If so, TAKE THAT CRAP OFF.
Freckles, after all, are a direct expression of blue sky.
I'm (perhaps too) well known for thinking kinked red hair and dalmatian freckles are the best possible look on a caucasian woman. And they're impossible to fake (well).
Change her dress color to Royal blue. Yeah yeah, the sun in Mr. Blue's Sky gives green living things, blah, blah, blah... but I'm American... I'm not that smart... gimme something, literally, blue... put it on her body. (You COULD even embroider stars to the back of her dress and have her turn at the end of the song. )
Shoot it at sunset (or time lapse the change in day). Or edit in the changing outdoor environment.
Expand the live piece to be the entire album side of "Concerto for a Rainy Day." Mr. Blue Sky is the last song of that set and this exact performance is a brilliant conclusion.
Standin' in the Rain, Big Wheels and Summer and Lighting all have potential to be a big build up to this finalé.
Consider finessing a way to add the intro, "Good morning, today's forecast calls for blue skies." Static tube radio would work well here.
Figure out a way to add the call-backs ("blue" and "sky") as the song progresses...maybe megaphoned people in the wings?
Great way to end the day.

When a song has enough substance to be reinterpreted at this level you know Jeff Lynne wrote a great one. Scott Bradlee's arrangement is superb. It could be the first act closing number in a Broadway musical. For me, the setting and attire for the performers lends a comfortable formality to a shared moment celebrating the return of blue skies after a long period of rain. The instrumental performances are excellent and create a structure, texture, and space so lush that a singer of Allison Young's talent can take us on a walk through its verdant landscape as a fond companion and guide. Truly a great performance. Thank you.
