This is where it all started for me several years ago with both PMJ and the incredible Haley Reinhart (both now among my favorites). I've come back for a listen many times since then and it's still magical every time.
Everyone's commenting on how good Haley's voice is, and rightfully so, but what's seems to be getting lost is how incredible this arrangement is. It the combination of the two that make this a great cover. Such an original take on a great song, with an outstanding performance.

Having watched the video of all her AI appearances, I can see why she lost. They focused on her vocal gymnastics, rather than working them sensibly into the music, and the music production itself was very weak, with no dynamics. Had she done this and 7 Nation Army on AI with Scott's arrangement and production, everybody in the place would have shit bricks.
It's a shame that only a million people have watched this. On the other hand, it looks like all of us have watched it about a hundred times each, so that balances things out nicely.

Two things to say about this. First: it is a stunning performance by an enormously gifted singer. It raises a very good song to the level of a masterpiece. The arrangement is excellent and allows her to interpret the lyrics according to her genius. The musicians are as usual first rate. Until further notice, she owns this song. Second: Postmodern Jukebox. HUGE props to Scott Bradlee who had the vision and talent to put together this project and turn it into the astonishing musical collective it is today. What an amazing assemblage of artists! I hope they continue to publish their unique interpretations for many years more. Mass kudos.

This is pure talent.
Two things to say about this.
First: it is a stunning performance by an enormously gifted singer. It raises a very good song to the level of a masterpiece. The arrangement is excellent and allows her to interpret the lyrics according to her genius. The musicians are as usual first rate. Until further notice, she owns this song.
Second: Postmodern Jukebox. HUGE props to Scott Bradlee who had the vision and talent to put together this project and turn it into the astonishing musical collective it is today. What an amazing assemblage of artists! I hope they continue to publish their unique interpretations for many years more. Mass kudos.

So many brilliant artists now days focus 80% on the highs, but a true talent, a true musician like Haley does the magic already in the "quiet" parts, in the phrasing of the verses, without effort and without "showing off".
