EATING CUY in Ecuador - What Does Guinea Pig Taste Like 🇪🇨 Ecuadorian Food

  • The best guinea pig in Ecuador. It's not in Quito Baños or Cuenca. The best cuy in Ecuador is Gualaceo, which is 30 minutes outside Cuenca.
    At Mercado 25 de Junio at stall CA01 Mrs. Rosario sells a small one here for $10. She also sells roast chicken. Nothing else. She’s the only one here that still wears the Ecuadorian traditional dress. The pollera skirt. So you can pick her out immediately.
    S
    he doesn't do the sides. But fortunately, right next to her are Maria and Narcissa and they have all the sides like potatoes cooked in a pepa de sambo sauce which is a pumpkin seed aji, mote and chulpi, which is a type of corn with fava beans.
    She cooks guinea pig to order. Tell her what size you want she gives you the price. It took about 25 minutes for us to get this cuy.
    Cuy is one of the most traditional Ecuadorian foods. It was considered to be a gift from the gods by the Inca and Cañari people. And today Ecuadorians have still held that tradition.
    It is revered as something that you have at a special occasion. It might be a baptism, it might be someone graduating from college. But also sometimes families will come here, and have cuy together.
    Maybe eating guinea pig is difficult if you had one as a child. However, this is not the same kind of guinea pig and instead the size of a rabbit.
    What does guinea pig taste like? Well it mostly tastes like chicken thighs with just a touch of rabbit. Yes guinea pig tastes like chicken.
    I've eaten cuy in Ecuador before roasted over charcoal. I've also eaten cuy in Peru where it was deep fried guinea pig but I found it a bit greasy.
    Mrs.Rosario's cuy recipe is easy. She marinates this only in garlic and salt and then bastes it with achiote oil.
    It is so good I really do believe the best guinea pig in Ecuador is in Gualaceo.

    Ayngelina that is not true what you are saying your info is incorrect cuy it's not a traditional food for all ecuadorians its mainly there in the region of the Andes not every where in the country

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, it is something eaten in the highlands and you can also find it in some areas of the coast. Because of the diverse geography I don't know if there's a single traditional food that you can find absolutely everywhere in Ecuador.

    • @eezawch4447
      @eezawch4447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leave it to an Ecuadorian to try to teach foreigners about the regionalism and bigotry that exists in Ecuador. That’s why i prefer to mingle with tourists and foreigners when i visit Ecuador, because Ecuadorians themselves pride on their hatred toward other Ecuadorians (bizarre). Look, if a group of Ecuadorians does or eats something, then yes, that is an Ecuadorian thing. People eat alligators is Louisiana, but I don’t correct people who say it’s a North American thing just because I’ve never done it. Some People in the USA eat it, so I agree it’s an American thing, although I’ve never eaten it myself.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eezawch4447 there have been so many Ecuadorians who have been kind and are the ones who teach me about their food I wouldn't want people to avoid them as that's the best part of travel. And if you look at the comments on the videos so many Ecuadorians both here and abroad have been very kind. But yes there is a bit of regionalism, I've noticed people tell me here about the snobbiness of Cuencanos or how people are in Quito and of course the jokes of people in Loja eating dogs. I'd say we also have that in Canada. I don't think anyone would ever agree to a single food being truly Canadian.

      I completely understand that. I think some modern restaurants are now using it in ways so people can try it without viewing it as an animal.
