Nature can be cruel - adult rabbit attacks baby bunny

  • In an attempt to allow our rabbits to enjoy a dry, reasonably warm day out in our yard and to give them a chance to get some exercise and to socialize, we let them out in their protective pens, separating the adult males from each other and from the females and their litters. One adult female with an older litter of her own decided she did not like her sister's younger litter being in the same pen. She aggressively went after a few of the 3-week-old babies and finally succeeded in biting and crippling one unfortunate baby.
Very shortly after, we came across a viral video where a similar thing happened to a baby bunny named Wheelz whose owners found crippled but alive and built him a little wheelchair out of dollar-store materials. This was a very moving gesture and was heartwarming in the hope it inspired. Unfortunately, their bunny ultimately passed away too from his injuries.
The saddest part of the whole thing was some people's reactions to their video. They blamed Overlook Acres (Wheelz' owners) for what happened and accused them of cruelty and neglect for allowing their rabbits to freerange and 'suffer' outdoors.
They ignored the explanation that an adult rabbit caused Wheelz' injuries and questioned their character and motivations for keeping rabbits and for trying to keep Wheelz' memory alive.
I thought for a long time about whether or not to publish this video (as I simply wanted to forget this ugly incident), but felt it should be shared in defense of what the good people at Overlook Acres had said all along. An adult rabbit attacked and crippled their baby bunny through no fault of their own.
People criticize breeders if they keep their rabbits in cages with wire floors (no matter the thickness of the gauge or the fact that it's ultimately healthier and cleaner for them), yet in trying to do better and offering them the ability to freerange... this too is treated by some as being criminal and neglectful.
    Not so and not fair.
So in defense of Overlook Acres, I'm showing this video.
This video is and remains my sole copyright.

the bigger rabbit must've bit the baby some part of the spine, which explains why it no longer walked with his hind legs, and the damage was too much that the baby passed.

+Golden lotus yes the bite from their teeth can penetrate and crush the spinal cord or break vertebrate without penetrating skin because their skin is very elastic! And actually rabbits will do this in the wild quite often when competing for food or mating much like prairie dogs! Birds fling babies out of competing nests or break the eggs! Lions kill other males cubs, the list goes on! It's nature! Never mix batches of babies of separate males and females! Because this is always a possibility!

Should never ever ever keep random adult rabbits with babies. Even females with a litter of their own. I'm sure you know now but for anyone who doesn't know, never keep baby rabbits with any other rabbits except for their mother and litter mates. Rabbits are cute but EXTREMELY territorial and can be downright vicious. Don't let the cuteness fool you.

They only do that if you’re a dumbass owner. The only time mother specifically will cannibalize their young is when they’re not getting the proper diet and nutrients they need.
The father/other non-related animals are different. They’ll cannibalize for other reasons, such as territorial. But if you know anything about breeding pets, you should know that the mother and babies should be separated from ALL other animals, including the father.

I’m not sure about guinea pigs but that is true. It has been known in hamsters that if they have too many young to rear or if there is a shortage of food they will kill and eat their babies. Usually the smaller weaker ones though.

    • @PsychicIsaacs
      @PsychicIsaacs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@velvet1371 He wrote a number of books of that genre, some of which were also made into animated feature length films of this type.
The Plague Dogs was also excellent, (and was made into a movie) but I should warn you, it will make you cry, it will make you angry and it will make you never want to have anything to do with "scientific" testing on live animals!
I'm NOT a Vegan, because I believe that we humans are designed to be omnivorous hunter gatherers, and also gardeners (some of the most primitive tribal groups on Earth still cultivated food crops, including that they dug irrigation trenches and maintained (sometimes vast) fields of monocultured edible plants), but I am against "scientific" testing on animals, because in most cases it is both unnecessary and wilfully cruel.
Nature is also cruel. Cats in particular seem enjoy torturing their victims, and sometimes dogs and wolves as well, but they are operating off a set of instinctive programming, and so they don't really know what they are doing.
When humans torture animals, they know exactly what they are doing and this is what makes laboratory testing on animals so evil and so wrong.
I have a farm and I kill my animals sometimes for food, but every day until the last one, every minute until the last one, is as good as I can possibly make it.
When Death comes for my animals, it is as quick and as pain free as I can make it, and I believe that I am much less cruel than a fox or any other predator would be if it ate that animal, instead of me.
I think that Douglas Adams got the depiction of the Balance of Nature right in his books, and I think this is the true genius of his work.
      God Bless.

@Tahmid Alpha12 I am not a Muslim and I don't want to become a Muslim. I have personally seen some very cruel animal slaughter done in the name of Allah.
That said, everyone is not the same. I know that. But if you pray to the God of Heaven and thank him for the life of the animal, then tell the soul of the animal to depart in peace to its eternal home, then kill it as quickly and humanely as possible, this pleases God.
If your religion has specific prayers to pray at the time of slaughter, you should pray them.
These are the things that please God, a genuine heart, more than the outward form of religion.

Twiglet. Actually the sound of that baby bunny in pain like that triggered a predator instinct in that dog and he was chomping at the bite to kill it himself. People forget because of how domestic the creatures are, that they are natural predators themselves and sometimes they do want to kill.

    • @Musiclover19
      @Musiclover19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +76

@Transitions and Sunglasses No, sorry. What I’m saying has actual SCIENCE behind it. Most predator animals (and yes dogs are predators, even if they’ve been domestic) do NOT feel sorry for other animals, especially ones that are usually seen as prey.
That’s why dog toys squeak like they do, they’re actually mimicking the sound of a dying rodent to entice dogs to play with it more.
But hey, if you want to believe that we live in some sweet Disney Zootopia world where a predator animal would actually cry or feel any sympathy for a mere rodent, that’s your silly business, when the FACT is that dog wouldn’t give a second thought about killing that bunny himself rather it be for food or even just to relieve the need to kill.
As I mentioned, dogs are still predators and therefore still have an urge to kill. That’s not me giving an “opinion,” that’s straight facts.

The adult rabbit had to bite _down_ on the much smaller baby. The most likely place for its sharp upper front teeth to impact the baby rabbit is somewhere along the top of its back. That's where the spinal cord is, so it's not too surprising or coincidental that the force of its bite severed its spinal cord. It's really not so much a matter of "knowing" precisely where to attack, but rather a natural consequence of how the two rabbits are positioned in that moment.

Not really. Animals as a whole have very little intellect and rely primarily on instinct to do much of anything. There are some exceptionally smart animals (smart in relative to an animal) but they all lack the basic brain power for one crucial thing. Sentience. That's why they're animals. Because we as a species are sentient separating us from the animals. People give animals too much credit when it comes to this sort of thing

First: I just want to say I'm glad you learned from your mistake! Not everyone knows that does can be so vicious and downright murderous from the fact that rabbits generally are calm and collected. A rookie mistake, but a good one to learn.
Second: From someone who raised rabbits for 10 years, this Female Rabbit attacked the bunny because rabbits are highly territorial! Keeping nonlitter-mate females together is a big no-no. Females hate the company of other females if they've been kept alone the majority of their life, and tend not to bond well with other females from different mothers. Some won't even get along with cage/crate neighbors and will bite other rabbits on the nose, nip their ears or tails, and even kill bunnies through cage walls. In general, this female is highly aggressive because she doesn't want any potential threats to her home and litter. Some rabbits are just like that. Some rabbits are also horrible mothers, killing their offspring before their first feed.
Third: I hope you guys culled this doe since this happened. A mean little bugger like that will breed more aggressive babies and ultimately your rabbits will all be assholes.

    • @flufflekeeper1962
      @flufflekeeper1962  7 ปีที่แล้ว +116

Thank you for sharing your experience and insight. We did not cull this female rabbit as she was still weaning her own litter. This unfortunate event was not expected as she was already bonded with her sister and it was her sister's baby she attacked and she had never attacked any other babies before when we let them out of their nursing hutches and put them together in the exercise pens. Never any sign of aggression and none since. She still remains a sweet and happy pet and her offspring are also very sweet tempered. In fact, one of her litter is by far one of the most affectionate lady bunnies that we've ever had. Total attention hog and petting addict and loves to share kisses. Others have complained that 'this isn't nature' due to them perceived as being 'caged'... yet they fail to remember that this video is in defence of what happened to Wheelz in his rabbitry where he and his siblings live 'free range'. Anyway, thanks again for your imput. Best regards.

Rabbits also have a concept of over-crowding. In nature they live in warrens and if a warren becomes crowded some of the rabbits will be chased away. The evictees are usually the kits of the lowest does. We have a wild rabbit warren near us and it is a slaughter ground every summer with kits being killed, run over or staving after being evicted. Rabbits mate almost immediately after giving birth so to them it's a numbers game and individual kits don't matter as long as enough live each year. Overcrowded rabbits show stress and will often be seen fighting around the warren.

People usually just think of bunnies as docile, timid fluffballs that eat leaves but they can actually be incredibly aggressive. They're social animals, so they're very concerned with where they "stand" in the group and how others "stand" in relation to them. Dominance and hierarchy is very important to them. You ever read/seen Watership Down? THAT'S bunnies...minus the obnoxious seagull.

    • @photios4779

Agreed. For that matter, humans can be very cruel too if multiple unrelated families with children and adults are packed in a small enclosure (such as a concentration camp). Putting all these rabbits together in the same small space and not keeping babies and their mothers separated from unrelated adults is a recipe for problems. The value of this video is in warning those new to keeping rabbits about what NOT to do.

They heard the cry of the bunny, the dog wanted something to eat. That's why it did that. They wait for the perfect moment and then, yeah.

Lulster 10 no, the dog sensed the anixety coming from the rabbit and the anxiety concerned the dog. When you're anxious you release stress hormones as well.

Lulster 10 unfortunately you haven't studied animal social behavior, research and it shall open a rift in your mind. On the other hand, that behavior is most seen in wolves more often

The dog seemed very concerned after hearing the baby bunny scream :( overall, that adult rabbit was a piece of shit, it attacked the darker bunny before crippling the poor white bunny.

They weren't concerned. They wanted to eat it.

Yeah, that wasn’t a concerned response. That was a prey/predator response. Most dogs will go nuts when they hear an animal in distress, and will often attack/prey on it.
My dogs sit by the chicken coop all day, and can be relaxed- but as soon as the hens start going a bit crazy in their coop, making a fuss, my dogs will perk up and start racing circles around the pen, whining at them. It’s a typical predator response to prey animals. They have the same reaction if my sheep start running around. Their response is to start chasing it.
Had that dog been in the pen with them, it would have gone for that baby bunny and put it out of its misery- not for mercy, but for fun.

Calabi-Yau Manifold Dogs aren’t your usual predators. Dogs don’t quietly stalk their prey. They corner and chase it, and they make noises to communicate with other dogs in the pack. They express excitement with loud, sharp vocals. This is a dog making noises out of anxiety- the anxiety of seeing a prey animal in distress- anxiety because he can’t get to it.
If you knew anything about hunting dogs, or just most dogs in general, they get very excited/anxious before they’re set loose on prey.
I watch my dog chase birds all over my yard, and he makes vicious noises out of frustration when he can’t catch them.
Just watch wild African dogs, or any other dog during a hunt... of course they make noises in the face of prey in distress.
Sure... you might find the rare dog who would whine with genuine concern over an injured animal, but that response would commonly be directed to another dog, a human baby even... but this dog I can hear is excited. Most dogs will attack a quick moving animal if it’s making noises like that. It’s just in their nature.
Both my dogs will sit at my chicken coop and quietly watch my hens, but as soon as my hens start going nuts for whatever reason, my dogs get up and lunge at them from the other side of the fence. My Corgi pants heavily and whines with excitement when she does it.
It doesn’t take a genius to understand that that dog wants to attack that little prey animal in distress. It’s what they do, and the only way you’d be able to stop it, is if your dog is intelligent enough, well trained enough, and obedient enough to listen to you when you direct them to not touch it.
Even working dogs (sheep and cattle dogs) need to be kept in check when they’re rounding up sheep. They whimper and whine with excitement and can even get carried away with their mouth. That’s the predator in them.

The screaming might have been hurting the dog's ears too. I don't think the dog was actually concerned about the baby bunny.

lil glock I personally find that spacing it the way I do (creating paragraphs) helps break the down the comment. I get bored when I read a comment that seems to go on forever and ever.
