I adopted the "Norwegian Knit" and the "Norwegian Purl" by watching Arne. I am not a knitting wizard, I'm just a woman with some years of knitting "English" under her belt. I am self-taught by buying How-to books and patterns back in the '70s. You just have different ways of verbalizing what you are doing. All people really have to do is use the "pause" key liberally. You make a great tag-team on teaching. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, light bulb moment! Thank you both so much. I’ve been trying to learn continental knitting for a while, I could never ‘tension’ the yarn over my finger comfortably without having to re-tension constantly. Your way is perfect, absolutely fantastic tutorial. ‘Change your tools, not you!’ Thanks so much to both of you xx

Oh my gosh- don’t judge you too harshly?! Are you kidding me? Carlos, we already love you! You and Arne are deeply beloved around the world. You are such a brilliant and masterful team and I admire the way you work together, both personally and professionally. You each have so much to offer and contribute and we all look forward to your episodes each week! My gosh, we plan our days, our lives, around it, LOL! Personally speaking, I have learned so much from each of you; things that far transcend the knitting world. I admire your kind and loving ways, how you treat each other with dignity and respect, you care about our planet and value even the smallest things, but things that matter. I just love and appreciate your ways of ‘being’ in the world, your skills and your breadth of knowledge, your generosity, warmth and hospitality, your values and ethics and well-roundedness...honestly, I could go on. I have been your fan for many years when I stumbled on you quite accidentally on TH-cam one day and I have remained drawn in ever since. It was one of life‘s greatest highlights to meet you both in Ashcroft, British Columbia 🇨🇦 last fall. Now, I’m so excited to re-watch your video and practice this new way of knitting! Many, many thanks and much love! 🇨🇦 ♥️🇳🇴 🧶

I love knitting this way. As a crocheter who only knIt very little. Knitting this way works for me. I have learned the Norwegian purl too and it’s the only way I purl now. Thanks Carlos for taking it slow. Love your example just pull the cord. I will always remember that. So good to see you both. Be Blessed.

Thank you for teaching me Norwegian knitting! I am a convert!! I was knitting a Bolero and the row of purling was too painful. I was an English knitter. It took me a minute to catch on and realize that this was my new way of knitting, but now, there is no going back. Thank you!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I am 70 years old and taught myself how to knit in my early twenties. I struggled for years (in my teens) to learn how to knit the way it was taught in the books in the US where I live, and the way my grandmother showed me, but I just couldn't get it. Finally I decided just do it my own way. After watching your videos I realized I wasn't doing it the "wrong" way, I was doing it the "Old Norwegian Farmers" way. My projects always come out nice, but I am slow! I wanted to learn your Norwegian way so I could knit faster and be more comfortable with color work. I watched both Arne's and Carlos' tutorials and picked it up in no time! Love it. (My great grandfather was from Norway, maybe it's in the genes.LOL). I just started watching you last fall and am still catching up. You guys are awesome. Thank you

Recently, I have watched some TH-cam Videos to try and learn Continental Knitting but somehow devised my own way of knitting. Little did I know that my "devised" method of knitting which I'm most comfortable with is the Norwegian Style! This is so cool!!

  • @ejd52
    @ejd52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm making a swatch and determined that it is time for me to switch to Norwegian style. So I remembered this video and found it and indeed, it's so simple and in spite of arthritis and tiny (to me) needles, my hands do not hurt and I'm getting the hang of it. "Pull the cord!" Will become my mantra for the swatch by which time I hope it's a habit. Thank you. I guess when one is ready - even motivated - to learn something, it comes easier but also, good teaching helps too.

Thanks guys. After 45 years of being a knitter who threw his yarn because that was grandma's way ( she's the one who taught me) I have decided to watch you guys and copy what you do. I can say after a year of knitting your way I knit faster and have a better tension. I don't think I can go back to grandma's way. Purling took a little longer to master but I did. Love it. I'm glad I learned how to twist cables without an extra needle. Big time saver.

I am so relieved that I am not the only one that knits this way. I am not Norwegian, I was born in Caracas, Venezuela and this is the way I’ve been knitting since my mother taught me at age 15. I’ve been living in Canada for many years now and I always felt a little bit weird because people here knit the English way (I think that’s how it’s called). I could never explain why my way of knitting was different than everyone else, and also I don’t really know the history of how it came to be that this is the way my mother used to knit. I now have learned that the way I knit it’s called “Combination Continental”. I do the purl stitch different than the Norwegian way, but still hold the yarn the same way. Very interesting! Thank you Arne and Carlos.

Thank you, you both have changed my knitting life. I learned to throw knitting when I was 5 years old, my Grandma Mary taught me this way as I couldn't hold the needles and thread in the continental way, my hands were to small. My Grandma also taught me to crochet, and I found it easier, so put knitting in the back part of my brain. I picked up knitting again in my teens, but I only knew how to throw so my knitting was very slow. I found you two wonderful knitters and you taught me how to knit. Thank You. I love to knit lace, you made knitting easy.

So your plan is to knit a simple stockinette hat in the round on circular needles? To get started, do you think it would be OK to work the ribbed brim of the hat in my usual way (throw/English style) and then begin the Norwegian style when I get to the stockinette body of the hat, where I'd be knitting every round? This would certainly give lots of practice with Norwegian knitting, yet you'd be knitting something useful, not just a big swatch. Thanks.

Hello lovely Arne and Carlos I loved this episode of your vlog. I am so glad you chose a pre-recorded episode, I am concerned you are going overtire yourself. You really helped me understand the Norwegian method of sewing. It certainly looks very comfortable and easy to do once you have persevered with this method. Anything new is always trial and error and just keeping going. I taught myself to knit when I was 9 and it is nit traditional in any way, but I have always wanted to knit ‘properly’ so this is my chance to perfect it. Thank you both for keeping us all going, you are absolute stars to me. Look after yourselves, you are both my favourite people. Big hugs and loves always xxxxxxxxx Dorothy U.K. ❤️❤️🙋🏻😘😘🌟🌟

I learned English style and tried to learn continental for ages to speed up and to stop my hand from cramping, but I couldn’t get it. This, however, is GENIUS. It’s so much easier to catch the yarn when it’s resting against your index finger as opposed to flying in the air continental style. Can’t wait to keep practising this!

I believe I’m a convert after this came to
my attention today. I’ve been knitting on a basket weave pattern so it became very convenient & time saving to practice the Norwegian Purl. Thank you!!

Nice video showing how to hold needles and yarn over left index finger. I never get how to scoop yarn from left index finger by right needle. Big thanks Carol and Arne!

Loving the explanation, attention to detail and knowing the tension is in the needle; it's a small but significant shift for this continental knitter. Eye opening, thank you!

Carlos you did a great job. When I thought myself Continental (Norwegian) knitting I tensioned my yarn just like you teach. I’m so glad I never picked up the pointing finger habit! Looking forward to the Purl. I’ve had to watch Arnie in slow motion to try and figure it out. He is the speedy one! Haha.
So good to see both of you during the weekly podcasts. Stay healthy.

I'm guilty of winding the yarn a few times around my fingers on my left hand, and holding out my finger, so, loving the advice about not doing that - had not realised about how doing so leads to muscle strain. Going to start again in practicing using all your techniques. Many thanks to both of you :-)

I can’t compare Arne to Carlos’ way of teaching Norwegian style because this was my 1st try & it was very easy! I do have to “pull the cord” occasionally and hoping this helps my arthritis! I’m going to practice the knit stitch until next Sunday when you show the Purl stitch. Thanks, once again Arne & Carlos! 💕 💕

Hi Arne and Carlos. I've been knitting for 60 years, taught by my mother. Since I'm English, I learned to throw stitches. About 20 years ago I attempted ...and failed...to teach myself continental style. Too difficult! However, I watched the tutorial so I had a go with the Norwegian knit since I'm knitting in the round at present and found it so easy to do and so very easy with the 2 colour fair isle pattern. I'm on to the rib top so this afternoon, after watching your tutorial, I learned Norwegian purl. Well done Carlos...you made it simple to follow! I'm sending your videos to my sister who had given up knitting due to arthritis in her hands. I believe your ergonomic method will make possible for her to knit again. I'm also sending them to my niece who does colourwork but who throws stitches making progress slow and awkward.
You taught this old dog a new trick!! Many thanks. You guys are fabulous!!!!

Carlos this was so helpful! I'd adopted the Norwegian style after the earlier video but this helped me so much to clarify things. I was holding my left index finger more to the left than closer to the right needle. Thank you! Love you both.

Thanks Carlos ! This was great! Now I think I can handle it better. My gauge is still looser than when I knit with my right hand and I throw the yarn but I will continue to practice. Both of you are very good teachers. I know because I am a retired teacher.

Just learned the Norwegian knit. I have been knitting the same way since I was 8. So 50 years ago. I am working on my first Lopapeysa. So getting lots of practice. It will be interesting to try this style once I am on the yoke. Thank you thank you this was a great lesson. Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks
