    Turkish cast on is where you wrap the yarn around both needles for each cast-on stitch. This is a "figure eight" cast on because the yarn goes in between the needles and crosses over in the center like a number "8".

    Thanks again for a great tutorial. Keep on putting toe ups off because the heel makes me panic.
    Anrne I still have knitting continental style knitting envy, maybe if I practice one hour a day I might master it when I am 70, that gives me two years?
    I so like the fact that you don't hold your finger in the air and I can do it your way very slowly.
    So glad you also match the yarn of the two socks, my daughter thinks I am strange, love matching socks.
    Look forward to next week.

    • @Carol-Bell
      @Carol-Bell 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anita Swart you can do it! Just relax and go slowly and get a “rhythm” going. Your hands will get used to the movements. I don’t hold my finger in the air either, I there is a simple way to minimize hand movements, with the right needle “scooping” the yarn and bringing it through the loop.

      Thank you so much, it is just that I have been knitting the English way for 64 years and it is automatic.
      But I try and teach myself something new each year.
      Perhaps just knit dish cloths and not worry about my uneven tension.
      What is your favourite knitting?
      Thanks again

    • @Carol-Bell
      @Carol-Bell 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anita Swart yes I encourage you to do that, just try continental and go slowly and rhythmically, and yes do washcloths. The tension will even itself out pretty soon, if you practice every day.
      My grandmother taught me knitting when I was a little girl but I did nothing with it until about 8 years ago when I was 60, after seeing my students wearing cute hats. I love hats but have a small head so decided to learn to make hats. But my dream is to make myself a sweater, so I have started making baby sweaters for friends, for practice. Now I’ve pretty much fallen in love with it. Last night I casted on for my 4th baby sweater. I just now discovered Arne & Carlos in my search for more on socks (another goal, to learn to make good socks for myself). I like how scientific they are about knitting😊 What do you like to knit?

    Thank you so much Arne! That was a good pace and easy to learn from you. I’ve tried cuff down socks only so far and really want to give this method a go. Although I need to finish the 2nd 1/2 of the 2nd sock so my husband can wear before I do. Is hard sometimes when you want to try a new method 😊

    I like the seam it gives but that definitely looks like it'd take a lot of practice to get the tension correct for me anyways. Thank you guys again for another wonderful tutorial, maybe I'll try this cast one with the sock yarn I'm getting from you guys!

    Annie, you knit like watching knitting on helicopter blades. Wonderful technique. I was just using the Judy's Magic Cast-on today. Always good to know more than one way to get things done. I actually don't mind Kitchner stitch. I did a series of Christmas hats and it was done on the bias and had a long kitchner seam. Now I can do Kitchner in my sleep, I think.

    An excellent way to measure yarn for long tail cast on is to wind the yarn around the needle as many times as the desired number of stitches. To save time, if I need a larger number of stitches I will wind 1/2 stitch count and x2= total amount. Remember not to wind too tightly!

    Loved this tutorial and thank you for using the larger needles and thicker yarn so that you can see the process. I wish you had then shown what it looks like using the actual thinner sock yarn and needles, that’s when it gets more frustrating for me, because the stitches are so much smaller and I have more problems with keeping my stitches nice and even. Love you two and all the beautiful projects and techniques you share!

    There are so many ways to do it right :-) When I first read about socks started at the toe, it was in a Dutch book on handcrafts from Yugoslavia (the country not existing anymore now). Probably late 1970s. This sock was started with a very small square (6-8 stitches) in rows knit and purl, and then putting the stitches of the four sides on four needles. And then a beautiful sock was knitted in 2 colours with traditional patterns ( I still have to search, if now they are Croatian, Serbian, Slovenian, or what)

    I have to try that cast on. Wonky but I like it. As always I learned something new. Loved listening to Freja growl. I don't like to waste yarn so when using long tail cast on, I cast on ten stitches drop them measure the length of yarn used then times the number of stitches needed add another 12 inches and it always works out. 🏵
