Some tips: Replace the fuel rail, sensor, and pump together; Rotate the crankshaft until the cam lobe under the fuel pump is flat; Make sure the pump tappet roller is at its lowest point; Torque flange nuts and pump bolts exactly to specs.
My 2012 Kia optima had a faulty start with the same code... Watching this video, I was able to buy the part off ebay and change the part myself... Thank you so much!!!!!! save couple hundred bucks
I followed the video tutorial and installed a $160 high pressure pump successfully today, engine light turned off. Everything is good so far. My car is Hyundai Sonata 2012 GLS 130K mileage and it was having issue of slow start and engine light.
Thanks for the great video. Just changed the pump on our ‘13 SXL. Your video was the 1st to come up when I looked up the code p0087 and the only one I needed to watch. Very informative and helpful! Thanks again!
Have the same year and trim, new engine but it occasionally runs like something is wrong, no codes yet so just slowly learning what may need to be replaced
I have 2015 kia optima A day before yesterday my engine started making rattling sound when would accelerate. What could be the problem ? I haven’t drove it since
Allan Quino starting the vehicle before changing the pump was tough. I had to cycle the key multiple times before it would start. Once it started the power was really low also. I was hitting 7,000 rpm just trying to get up to 40 mph.
since you didn't replace the line, have u had any leaks? i'm about to order this pump for a 13'sonata and debating on changing the line---manual says to replace but many supposedly don't
Go to harbour freight and get the line wrenches and you would be safe.dont do like this guy that was kind of getto.15 $ and you got a decent tool.that will help you tightening better.
Just a bit of advise, you should make sure that the cam that drives the pump is on a flat. And not on the lobe to prevent possibly damage to the new pump.
remove sparkplugs, hand crank the engine with a ratchet and socket on the crankshaft pulley, and look down the hole of the HPFP to see if the lobe is at the lowest point.
Great video, however should you be using thread lockers on those bolts and torque the bolts to specification? With all these Kia catching on fire, some found out that it was cause by fuel leak from the high pressure pump...
I have a related problem in that I have a pinhole leak in the plastic nipples that’s just before (hose side, not pump side) of the orange quick connect you showed. I think that line is the fuel feeder hose coming from the tank (and the low pressure pump you also mentioned). I can’t find anywhere if I can just replace that connection and if so what that part number is. Or do I have to run an entire new hose. If that true I can’t even find the part number for the hose. If you can help I’d appreciate it. Again I’m talking about repairing the rubber line going into the HPFP. Thanks in advance
I have a 2012 Opmtia, I got the same code (P0087) Fuel Rail/ System Pressure too Low. How do I know which PUMP to change? (HIGH or LOW) I was going to take the car to Kia, but they want $600.00 just for the pump. After watching your video I can do it myself. I didn't see a video on the LOW perssure pump, so I'm not sure what to buy. Any help would be great.
Egypt Murray change the high pressure pump first. If the low pressure was bad it wouldn't run at all. I just wasn't aware of the high pressure pump until after I replaced the low pressure pump
Hello Egypt Murray. I’m facing the same issue today with my Kia. Do you remember how much you got the part for? My auto parts store is selling it for $500 and the Kia dealer is saying I have to get it diagnosed for $200 first and will cost around $700 total.
How can I Diagnosis if the high pressure pump doesn't work? When I remove high pressure pump wire car is starting and no different in sound. Can explain more how to diagnose the problems that indicate high pressure pump. And can it repair or must changed? Thank you.
First off, you'll notice after start up the rpm drives way down in the 300rpm area before the computer picks it up. Sometimes you also experiencing a delayed crank. Mine did not throw codes, even when the engine died driving. It started up again. If you do get a code it should be for low fuel rail pressure.
I have a 2014 Kia Optima, my car shakes when stopped at a traffic or very slow speed or backing up. When I accelerate it runs smooth. I changed all the spark plugs, the coils also the fuel injectors as it was giving codes in cylinder misfire. None fixed the problem, then I had the engine rebuild and pressure tested all pistons all looks good but still shakes when stopped in drive or slow driving, engine light came on with P0301 code. Not sure what else to do. Do I replace the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pumps? Any suggestions?
Artur Roszkowski that is pretty strange. One common factor is not putting premium gasoline in your car. However, if your car is still covered by warrantee please check out the comment that I’ve pinned to the top. It’s from someone who was able to get get the warranty to replace it.
So my dealer is quoting me $1700 CDN for parts, this includes the high pressure pump and the tube line. Is the tube line necessary to change if not damaged ?
@@stfuplz13 I alrdy changed the pump and bolts. I kept the line and made sure it is tight as possible. It has been 2-3 weeks now. No leaks or issues. I check on it every once in a while to see if there is any.
Thank you parker!! I was talking to a friend and showed him the part, but he keeps telling me that is the regulator and not the actual pump. I'm assuming it's because it's high pressure and not a normal looking low pressure. So, just to confirm, what you bought was infact the High Pressure Fuel Pump? Thank you for such a fast response!! Honestly I logged in hoping you had replied but not actually expecting it lol
Carissa Nauman I try to reply immediately to comments! Car troubles usually require immediate attention. I bought he actual high pressure fuel pump. The fix has helped dozens of people as you can read through other comments. However if you want to be sure you can always run it to a shop and have them test the fuel pressure. The pressure is supposed to be somewhere in the range of 1500-2100 however mine was around the 80 mark. Once I put the new pump in it’s been working amazing
I was just at the mechanic yesterday. I had bad sparkplugs and gas in the oil. They fixed both of those, but showed my high pressure fuel pump still had an issue. HOWEVER, just an FYI, they are currently recalled due to the faulty code of p0087. So just because you have the code does not mean you have an issue. With mine though I clearly do. I'm trying to avoid anymore mechanic bills lol. Also, open recall on underbody corrosion, possible metal in the engine from assembly, and rear lower control arms. All of those 4 will be fixed for free. Sadly the pump is not included.
Carissa Nauman thanks for the heads up! Yeah mechanic bills are frustrating I had two quotes to replace my pump. One was $1350 and the other was $1450. I was able to fix it myself for around $400
KABLAH RC pull both and start your car. It will soon die because it has no gas supply. At that point you can switch the pumps out. And then put the fuses back in and start the car and check for leaks.
for the love of god please use a flare nut wrench on the fuel line. also, probably a good idea to change to camshaft follower that sits between the pump and camshaft.
great video . i have this same problem going on with my kia optima 2013 sx turbo .. do you have any idea what can cause this to fail . could it be from putting the cheapest gas . or also running it on low gas .?
Spartan- Strong sorry for the late response! Typically it is from running the cheapest gas. These engines actually call for 91+ octane. However, it appears that these parts just fail over time and need to be replaced.
Is not the fuel the problem is the high preasure that this pump needs to create is 650 psi at idle and gets up to 1700 psi at 2000 ram so figure is just a matter of time and they fail .till they make better pump this would be a common issue on this gdi engines.
Badr Basrah you mean the fuel pump relay?if you don't know let the car seat over 2 hours like no start and then you can proceed to lose up the high pressure hose should be safe.
Got a '15 Sonata, very similar build. It took you 10sec, to get the hose off with the orange clip. Of course they had to make things complicated, took me 20 min. with the oem recommended prying tool. Other than that it was straight forward the same job.
Yes, just did the same job on my 2015 Sonata and it was a PITA! Felt like replacing the cheap brittle looking plastic gasket. Didn't use the OEM prying tool. Just jamed a small open end small wrench in the gap and pryed it back and forth. How many miles to you have on your '15? Mine 129k.

Do you where the fuel filter is located
Do you have a video of the low pressure fuel pump that you replaced? Also, where is the fuel filter located?
Shouldn't there be a cam follower in there that needs to be checked for wear or replaced?
Yep
How can we find out either low pressure or high pressure pump is bad?

Joel G most people haven’t changed it. I haven’t had any leaks at all. Just depends on whether or not you want to do it.
Go to harbour freight and get the line wrenches and you would be safe.dont do like this guy that was kind of getto.15 $ and you got a decent tool.that will help you tightening better.
You should check the cam follower inside the engine for wear. A bad follower could cause pump problems and noise.

What size socket did you use to get the bolts out
Was it making a noise I’m trying to see something
Do you have to replace both the low and high pressure for the p0087 or can you just replace the high pressure pump?
Jesse Fearfield just the High Pressure Fuel Pump should fix the problem. Only do the low pressure pump if the high pressure doesn't fix it.
Great video, however should you be using thread lockers on those bolts and torque the bolts to specification? With all these Kia catching on fire, some found out that it was cause by fuel leak from the high pressure pump...
