Did you check the preload of the bearing with the new lsd? I'm currently rebuilding my c50 and fitting a quaife lsd and I'm curious if the dif required shims and how the ring gear surface contacts the final drive gear. thankyou if you get the chance to reply
Always makes me happy to see a mechanic "finger painting" the RTV. It is a small step, but it makes the finished "squeeze" much more predictable and requires way less sealant overall.

Reasonable amounts of sealant!? A guy at work was helping us with a traction motor rebuild one day and decided he was going to apply the sealant to the bearing shells. We had to break the motor back down and clean everything again, as there was so much sealant the bearings couldn't seat against the motor. A little goes a long way 😉
I wanted to get a clutch type LSD for my atmospherical MR2 SW20. This video changed my mind. There is no way I'm opening a transaxle like this and it will still work fine once it's reassembled. Maybe I'll find a shop that does this as a service.

Does the CD7 have provision for speed reading in tunnels or canyons? I'm always intrigued how GPS based speedo handle losing the satellite connection. I would think the ABS sensors would be a good option, if they're something the ECU/dash can read, assuming the vehicle has them (not sure if the mk1 MR2 has ABS so maybe not a solution here).

Having done that myself, I can definitely say that a transmission rebuild takes way longer than 17 minutes! :D One thing I do differently is to not smear the sealant with my finger, but leave it as it comes out of the nozzle. When the mating surfaces come together, that 'snake' of sealant will be flattened and pushed where it needs to be. Like this: th-cam.com/video/e6I6vJb6HQk/w-d-xo.html
It seems very odd to me not to transfer the plastic gear for the speedometer, just to retain that option for the future. It couldn't have been much more work. Otherwise, super interesting video.
if you tear the box that much apart, what could you do there to make it stronger? or what does a gearbox need to handle big amount of tourque? bigger gears? changing the synchros?
This is already a very strong transmission which is why I'm using it. My current transmission which is a c50 could not reliably handle the turbo turbo torque my new engine will be making. The main difference are the gears they are dramatically thicker and beefier in the e51. Some transmissions have upgraded aftermarket gear sets for them but they're usually very expensive. If there isn't anything in the aftermarket than you need to make a custom set, which is usually even more expensive. You can also pick up a lot of strength by getting straight cut gears but those are often very noisy. All in all it's usually a lot cheaper to use a different transmission than trying to turn a weak transmission into a strong one. The synchros don't have the task of bearing any torque so they don't really play a significant part in the strength equation.
@@d4a for my gearbox, i only can make it itself stronger. if you have ever seen the transmission/transaxle/oilcontainment-box on a SAAB 900, then you understand why
@@d4a i wish you could do a detailed video explanation on transmissions, from sequential, manuals, automatics to dual clutchs. Also I wish you could do a detailed explanation video on doing bellhousing alignments
Also the center distance between the input and output shaft is bigger. At the same torque, the longer leverage gives a lower tooth load. Theres around 15 kg more metal in the E Vrs C gearboxes.
god dammmm I thought biggest expense would be actually buyng wavetrack lsd for a mini, but now I see that ammount of work hours needed and a specialist willing to is also a huge problem when there is no car culture in your country and every "mechanic" either just changes the brake pads or the tyres.
Great video as always! Does the bearings on differential needs to be configured also? You take them off and install them again and the gap between bearings and the transmission body will be slightly different. That can do some noise or overheat in future. PS: sorry for my poor English, I'm from Russia.
Sorry I'm not sure I understand. There's nothing you can configure in this case. They were removed and installed in the same place just on a different diff, but all the Quaife dimensions are identical to the stock one.
@@d4a In RWD cars the tapered roller bearings on differential case needs to set up some kind of "preload" (to reduce a gap in this type of bearings which exists by design) and this procedure must be performed every time if bearings removed or installed. In the video the bearings just install on the same place - is it safe? or for FWD cars it is enough?
@@charliebeltram144 that's an MR2 Toyota, it's RWD (but yes, it's also a central engine, so the setting is similar to a FWD one in that sense). I agree with you on the preload check on the bearing, that's something that should be checked on the manual I suppose.
Hey man, great video. I really want an LSD! Is there no need to shim preload on the quaife? I remember inventing a few tools and techniques to install the stock diff to the correct pre load
The shim preloaded may or may not be needed. In my case it wasn't needed. The mechanic you see building the transmission in this video installed dozens of them over the years and he said that about 10 years ago they started being so well made and fit with the casings so well that he almost never needs to shim. They needed shiming a lot more often in the early days though.
Why rely on GPS for the speedo? The electronic and mechanical speed sendors are interchangeable. That should interface and be scaled to work with your new dash. There might also be "spare" wires in the correct place to repurpose if your car didn't come factory fitted with cruise control. Other Toyotas (SW20, Hilux) had both mechanical and electronic sendors and matching speedos that interchanged. I never found one with the odometer reset in the correct position otherwise I would have swapped out to delete the cable drive.
Honestly it's just so much simpler. Figuring out which parts I need for the electronic speedo and then setting up the signal to work with digital dash isn't simple and I need the energy for other bigger things. I also prefer gps speed as it's dead accurate and isn't influenced by tire size and what not. For example when I'm using navigation on my phone I always find myself looking at the speed there and there's always 5-10km/h of difference in every car I've driven.
@@d4a I finally put my door card back together today so the car is officially over its rebuild. The speedo is of interest as I need to repair or replace mine. I do have an excellent Taiwanese GPS HUD to install, but Im torn because its a stock interior.

Which engine has the best primary and secondary engine balance? Inline-6 or Inline-8? V12 or V16? Flat-12 or Flat-16? The king of the primary and secondary engine balance is.....
Was that white car at the car wash a Toyota Yaris ? I own an ‘07 Yaris, but the American versions differ some from yours. Hardly anyone drives tiny cars here in the USA…except me…I have for 30 years
It's a 2009 Toyota Aygos, smaller than the Yaris. I believe the Yaris is the same or very similar everywhere. I use it a lot about town for chores and such. I got more mileage and use out of this car than most others I ever owned. Small cars are awesome and tremendously versatile if you're willing to compromise just a bit.
Curious: Will the accuracy of the GPS-based speedo be the same as the trans-based? Isn't there lag with the signals? At least on my phone (which I suspect might be quite different from the AEM), there's probably a whole second delay on updating speed.
It's actually more accurate than anything trans based,. Usually what you see on a conventional speedo is 10% ish less than what you're doing. I don't know about lag, but I doubt it's significant, but can't say for sure until I try it.
Not as accurate when your in a tunnel. My GPS speedo holds the last speed and shows a tiny "signal lost" icon in this situation. And yes, our local tunnel is steep as it passes under a river and has a speed camera at the bottom of the dip.
NA mr2 has c50 and c52. Supercharged has e51. I currently have a C50 mated to my bike carb engine. But for my new turbo engine I'll need a stronger transmission so I'll be using the e51.
wwwhhhyyyyyyyyy didn't you put the speedo gear back!!! WHY!! now you'll need to pull the gearbox apart again to go back to the classic stock gauges when the digital dash gets dated and looks tacky later :(
All you need to be legal is working brakes on all wheels, working lights everywhere, working parking brake and acceptable emissions for your emissions class. Obviously matching vin numbers and non rusted through chassis and other basic stuff, but no one sweats the "small stuff" like non-original steering wheels, aftermarket wheels, aftermarket suspension, performance air filters etc. Classic cars also get a bit more understanding for stuff like that because people have the common sense to know that keeping a car like that on the road requires a lot of care and effort anyway and owners are enthusiasts who make sure to keep the car in roadworthy condition even without any laws. You can have a legal engine swap too as long as it's not something absurd and poorly made. All in all for now there's still lots of common sense and no nanny-state stuff which works in favour of project cars at the end of the day.

What about diff preload ???
Oh, I thought this was going to be the difference between sugar cubes and tabs, but it's about cars.
So much work for a trip.
And yes, our local tunnel is steep as it passes under a river and has a speed camera at the bottom of the dip.
i thought the mr2 has the same trans like the ae92 gts which use the c52 but urs is e51?
NA mr2 has c50 and c52. Supercharged has e51. I currently have a C50 mated to my bike carb engine. But for my new turbo engine I'll need a stronger transmission so I'll be using the e51.
@@d4a I see, would the e51 fit other Toyota which use the 4age also such as the ae92 coupe, the hatch gti?
What ever happened to Midship Garage? I heard some sketchy things then their website and socials were deleted.

whats the difference between an lsd on a gearbox and a dif
You mean an open diff and an LSD?
"Klonk!" @ 17:09
My favorite part
I gagged when you said you wasn't bothering transferring the plastic speed gear and was going to use a GPS Speedo. That sounds horrible!
Why?
Lsd for C52 transmission?
I think I’ll leave that kinda project to the pro
wwwhhhyyyyyyyyy didn't you put the speedo gear back!!! WHY!! now you'll need to pull the gearbox apart again to go back to the classic stock gauges when the digital dash gets dated and looks tacky later :(
Cd7 tacky? Puhh leaseeee
@@d4a yup in 15yrs time yo! happens every time :)
@@mangomcpoo475Given that he actually drives and enjoys the car, in 15 years it’ll probably need another transmission rebuild anyway.
gps speedo is all well and good until you end up in a tunnel with speed cameras in.
Just keep driving normally?
@@d4a idk i'd just panic.
I have the revs in 5th memorised for 80 and 100 km. Handy as my speedo stopped working and I could never find a replacement.
plz wear a dust mask when operating that blaster bro.
Is a GPS-based speedometer legal where you live?
