The last video didn't check the source properly, there is an update 2, the august update is update 2, it's just that they've not named it update 2 publicly despite that being its internal name and that all the journalists have been referring it to what Microsoft has been code-naming it since they started working on it (8.1 Update was called 8.1 update 1 internally but called it 8.1 Update publicly, dropping the 1)
Dear LINUS, I would like to inform you that: -You can boot windows 8 installation on uefi enabled pc from USB3. Ive tested that on mine and my friends mobo. As a matter of fact i was able to boot while having the flashdisk connected to the lg in-monitor usb 3 hub (21:9 ftw) -You should NOT use windows 7 tool (and any other ones) for pendrives bigger than 16Gb and here is why: That tool will try to force everything, even 256GB pendrives to FAT32 partition type. It will force-format it to Fat32 regardless of its size result being "strangly behaving" ~ 16GB drive with rest being unpartitioned space. . .that windows can not format. I am serious, if that happens standard format tool and windows disks management utility can not do anything to that drive, they could not even reformat back to standard size and partition type. This can potentially damage your pendrive. -You should instead (and in case that ^ happens) run cmd in administrator privilages and use diskpart utilities to force-format it to ntfs, then manualy do the bootsect.exe /NT60 thing and manualy copy the data from iso to pendrive partition. (alternatively you can use linux which can force more hardcore changes to the drive, and repair it) -Yes, you can without ANY issues boot from NTFS based removable storages, as long as you have uefi and win7/8/.1 installer. . . . Just saying.
Just so you know, USB3 UEFI boot is dependent on motherboard manufacturer implementation, so it varies from board to board, but we can expect it to slowly become standard.
How should it damage your pendrive? I mean if you got an problem with a disk regarding partition just use diskpart to clean the disk(clean will delete all partition informations) and create partition, format and set it active. I use it regularly to use ntfs partition on usb drives to install win8 and 7. Because i've created an combined wim (with win7 and 8.1 x86 and amd64), i have to use ntfs (wim size is roundabout 9gb)( BTW you do not need uefi for this. My computers don't have uefi and it works)
Well, i dont trust automated solutions with my pendrive. Especialy if you make like Winxp + Win 7 +Win 8 + ubuntu + rescue/diagnostic distro of Arch all in one. . .if you dont do shit manualy itll brake.
cant boot from usb3 on a 1st gen sabertoothx79 board even with the bios from dec 2013. i also cant take bios screenshots unless the usb drive is formatted to fat32. septamus dave nailed it saying it varies from from board to board

Adrian Jaden thank you. Dont you need to do something with iso burner or something tho?? Also, cant i just put the windows file onto an actual cd. I remember watching a video about that and it looked super easy so i might just do that instead of using a usb
Just completed a fresh install using your instructions and it worked like a charm. Thank a million. My CD drive is broken and so my only other option to install was USB. I think the process of downloading the files and setting up the USB is slower than the actual install of Windows 8.1 on a fairly old PC.
Even though there are already software that allow you to have multi boot programs in a pen, there is always the need for discs in the way that you can give a disc to someone, for instance. They can be used as giveaway storage. They're also good to keep boot programs you don't use very frequently, or to backup extremely important data that really can't be deleted but fits in a disc or 2.

I'm currently building a computer a windows computer but I'm currently using a Mac book bro. Can I install windows to the flash drive using my Mac book?

That doesn't seem fair, the end user is still able to download it from the store and should be entitled to create a USB.. So there is no way to slipstream it? Just because I am the "manufacturer" and the end user?
mctonale That seems to be the case. I would love it if someone corrected me here. It's seems like a dumb policy from our standpoint. We're paying for a valid copy of windows. I've run into this issue with my last 3 builds. Just tonight in fact. Had to rip the ISO off of the DVD. I feel like a lot of people are just going to go download jinky ISO's off of torrent sites because it's still faster than ripping a DVD for many people.
mctonale not something I'm willing to risk. I'd suggest buying an 8GB USB drive to use as a dedicated Windows install medium. That's what I've now done

THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH, I BUILT MY FIRST GAMING PC TODAY AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO DO AFTER, THANKS TO LINUS IM DOWNLOADING WINDOWS 8.1 FROM MICROSOFT RIGHT NOW! im going to leave it overnight to download but thank you so much!!!
So glad I watched this video when it came out last year I am currently building a PC of my own and didn't know how I would install Windows without a drive but I guess my laptop has a key I can use so yay!
Can anyone help me, I have a old Sony Vaio VGN-AR290G and I'm stuck on the Vaio logo after that i just get a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left. almost looks like command prompt but its not. I try F8 and cant get to the BOOT menu. I only can get to the BIOS screen with F2. Please can anyone help me?
if you want to find your product key just do this windows + r -> type "powershell" (without quotation) -> type " (Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey " (without the quotation marks at the beginning and end) should work on windows 7, 8, and 10.
I was going to do this, but i figured, a disk drive is like 15-20 bucks. If im shelling out 1k on building a new pc, i can do 20 dollars more. I'm glad I did, it made graphics drivers and installing some old games easier.
Excellent Video!, However I have a few questions: 1 - Is it possible to install Windows onto a USB flash/pen device ? 2 - If so, can we get install software on this USB device as it would be a HDD ? Thanks for your answers in advanced.
When I start up my computer says something like insert boot drive then press enter. How do I fix this? It's on a new computer, so the hard drive has nothing on it. When I put in the USB and press enter nothing happens.
Followed all the instructions Successfully installed Win8.1 32 bit Deletes all of the iso files and such Need 64 bit for 4+ GB RAM. This is my 2nd viewing of the video because I cocked up
Seeing Linus back in 2014 and saying "Disk. I dont even have a disk to pull up and show you guys. Thats how arcade that technology is" is making me feel a bit very old XD

Unfortunately downloading the windows 8.1 is not as easy as expected. I am really not surprised people resort to piracy as the honest people are screwed at each turn. The Tutorial is terrific
This guy: It takes 20 minutes to install windows
My windows 8.1: takes 5 hours to finish downloading
5 hours? my "installation" was loading longer than that
@@BlueSky...... i didnt really include the error while downloading.
After ordering all my parts for my pc I felt pretty boned because I forgot the dvd driver. Thanks to you i'll be up and running in a few hours =D
I have windows 10 installed. But I downgrade to Windows 8.1. Will this work?
why would you even do that..?
No your pc will explode dont do it.
I didn't hear the neighbors', good video.
Linus, brilliant, everything we need, with no bla bla bla - thanks
Finally the answer I was looking for! Thanks a lot Linus!
Thank you guys so much! You are truly the most useful people on the internet.

I like this guy. He really captures my attention...
This video is extremely helpful and it saved me lots of time. Seriously, please do more!
Thanks man :D :D
being such a helpful guide for the last 4 years
and inshAllah for further years :D
So glad I watched this video when it came out last year
I am currently building a PC of my own and didn't know how I would install Windows without a drive but I guess my laptop has a key I can use so yay!
Hey everyone 2023 here trying to restore a windows 8 system. That was upgraded to windows 10

I just wiped it and installed Linux mint. Now it works. But I want to go back to windows.
Thank you Linus! Still using this current year.
I can't find the page where you enter your product key and it downloads your iso file.
if you want to find your product key just do this
windows + r -> type "powershell" (without quotation) -> type " (Get-WmiObject -query 'select * from SoftwareLicensingService').OA3xOriginalProductKey " (without the quotation marks at the beginning and end)
should work on windows 7, 8, and 10.
some guy online I got lost at the first windows xD
2021 and Windows has removed the create bootable media tool for 8.1, I hate win10 so much.
Nope. Still there: www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO
I was going to do this, but i figured, a disk drive is like 15-20 bucks. If im shelling out 1k on building a new pc, i can do 20 dollars more. I'm glad I did, it made graphics drivers and installing some old games easier.
thank you, getting ready to build a new system and was dreading the win install.
OHMAGAWD!!! I never thought it was this easy
Does this work for a new pc? I just built one and I don't want to get like an upgrade ISO or something.
super helpful! im building my own pc and i dont have an cd drive! thanks!
Excellent Video!, However I have a few questions:
1 - Is it possible to install Windows onto a USB flash/pen device ?
2 - If so, can we get install software on this USB device as it would be a HDD ?
Thanks for your answers in advanced.
When I start up my computer says something like insert boot drive then press enter. How do I fix this? It's on a new computer, so the hard drive has nothing on it. When I put in the USB and press enter nothing happens.
Followed all the instructions
Successfully installed Win8.1 32 bit
Deletes all of the iso files and such
Need 64 bit for 4+ GB RAM.
This is my 2nd viewing of the video because I cocked up
Does it unlocks my laptop I forgot my password
Yep im the guy linus is talking about in last portion of the video. Thanks Linus youre such a good guy
Seeing Linus back in 2014 and saying "Disk. I dont even have a disk to pull up and show you guys. Thats how arcade that technology is" is making me feel a bit very old XD
since my hard drive broke can i install windows on a usb drive and then boot my computer from the usb drive instead of a hard drive?
