Hi Ed. I appreciate all the information you provide. I’m 65 and no longer working. Not drawing my SS benefits yet. I’m a disabled veteran at 40% service connected. I’ve been getting my health care from the VA and very happy with the care I receive there. At 65 I went ahead and signed up for Medicare. My wife wanted me to get a supplemental Medicare plan, which I can’t fully understand because I probably will never use it. Any thoughts on Medicare for users of the Veterans healthcare program?

Under the QMB program, if the couple is not eligible for Medicaid, the eligibility worker needs to screen each spouse. it is possible that splitting the cases one or both will qualify for QMB. I believe that is still accurate, unless there have been recent changes.
It really seems unfair to the senior population to make it all so complicated. Especially at a time when some of that population begins to suffer cognitive decline. Who is looking out for them ?
I've heard that since I went on SS, it's been 8 years I've been dodging them. I can see if I think I'm going to be sick 😷.. but I'm not sick and I believe have faith, I'll be fine. Thanks so much for sharing this knowledge and wisdom with us 🙂
❤❤❤ very educational and lot of information. Question 🙋♀️ : I’m a retired receiving SS and pension. I have health insurance coverage from my employer and Medicare but my husband is still currently working. My question is why Medicare and my employer coverage are not covering my medical? I am on my husband’s coverage.Thank you. I don’t have to pay Medicare B?
I retired at 53 yrs old in 2013 from law enforcement (Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina) after 20 yrs and have the medical for life thru the local government. After 7 months I continued working at a hospital as a security officer. I had a stroke in 2022 one night while at work at age 62. Since I had no income coming, I took my SSA pension at 62 and also applied for SSDI. I got approved for SSDI. My lawyer said I will be getting a letter later indicating how much I’ll be getting a month. I will be 65 in May. When should I file for Medicare and what should I get? Will it affect my free medical for life that I get from retiring from the Sheriff’s Office?
Unfortunately, I still pay Medicare Part B. In order to keep my military Tricare health insurance. Even though I live abroad. Thousands are in a similar situation living abroad, not using Medicare. Yet, Medicare increases every year!!!!
Just to let you know I am 69 and my medical is100% paid by the VA. I also pay for Medicare and Premera Blue cross supplemental because the VA takes so long and bad back. Last month the VA made my local primary Dr at Franciscan hospital my primary Dr. for the VA also. I live near a VA hospital in Tacoma Washington also. I guess the VA is making some changes. It was always a pain to use the VA. I was approved for back surgery last year and had several different test and procedures and all the billing was denied by the VA and paid 100% thru my medicare and supplemental insurance. Maybe that will change now. The VA had to approve every procedure since it was a different dr doing the work. Had epideral shot in May and back is good now in Dec. Hope it holds up No surgery Yet.
It seems this Medicare is so antiquated which I believe you have commented about yourself. I just don't understand the need for all these various parts.. there should just be one that encompasses everything we need for health insurance.
It's Government set up, THUS a mess... Some have lifelong retirement insurance that covers everything, so NO COMPANIES, including Medicare, let you DOUBLE DIP........ One pays what the other "might" not, and ONLY what IS Medicare APPROVED....... If you have BOTH, Medicare us ALWAYS the primary 1st payer....
@pagosabob10 I actually don't want any of it cuz there is no way I use $2,400 a year going to a doctor in fact I don't like them and I think most of them are quacks and they work for the government I consider all of them legalize drug pushers which actually does more harm to their patients than good
@@pagosabob10 I personally do not want plan C. That is the Advantage plan which is controlled by private insurance companies. When you select C, you give up your Medicare. I have traditional Medicare with Plan N supplement and plan D prescription. I have no trouble getting medical care no matter where in the US I travel.

State of Illinois retiree here. Worked for the 20 years they said would get me "free medical" at retirement. Basically, the regular insurance drops down to secondary and we never have to buy a supplemental. It was United Healthcare for years, but Illinois is broke so we were switched to Aetna. Unfortunately, the version we now have is no better than the Aetna through ACA. If you are healthy, it's great. Unfortunately, my husband has kidney related health issues which knocks him out of signing up for many supplementals unless you find one that has guaranteed acceptance. I am dropping the "free" ins and putting him back on Traditional Medicare and buying G or F. All the commercials flooding the tv now are for Advantage Plans- beware of what you sign up for. Many doctors and hospitals are sending letters notifying you they are no longer accepting your plan (we got one). Check out the youtube videos about the senate hearings regarding the huge commissions the private agents get for signing you up as well as the massive denial rates patients are getting. In Illinois -if you are coming from an employer based ins- you get an additional 63 days to utilize the guaranteed acceptance window. This channel is great! !!!
So what about us people who don't work and will be turning 65 in a couple years.. I am NOT Happy that money will be taken out of my social security check for Medicare! There needs to be reform, we need to have options. I don't know enough about this stuff yet to speak intelligently, but when I do turn 65 and all this money has to go out for Medicare, I will suffer monthly as a result of it just like tons of other seniors in the US do.
You may qualify for dual special needs medicare with extra help?- you did not mention- are you on ssi? I receive ssa early retirement- next year will be medicare not mediaid- only make $20 more than max. Ssi, but am trying to legally earn more through Americorps stipended volunteerism SCP.
Currently If you don't have qualified employer insurance, you need to sign up for Part A and Part B. then you need to decide if you want 1) An Advantage, that includes Part D, 2) or a Supplement Plan(Medigap plan) and a separate Part D plan. Not signing up for Part B when you are eligible, will cause the start of lifelong penalties. If taking a supplement plan If you haven't taken SS yet, maybe try to delay closer to your FRA it to get more of your benefit amount.
1. Advantage plan members do not pay 20%, they end up hitting their max out of pocket expense (6700) before paying 20% of a 100k procedure like a heart bypass. 2. Medigap plan F with a 2800 high deductible is better then plan N or G because it cover “excess” doctor charges, if necessary.
It's One or the other. YOUR Direct taxes go to ss and mediCare... mediSAID is from the pool of general taxes, not a dedicated Trust ONLY, like the Other 2...
You might be referring to Part D. One can't really predict when they're going to need a prescription drug plan. Find a part D that is zero premium so it's free.
You will have part A. But if you are covered through your working spouse, you can complete a form to wait or "hold off" on part B until which time you will need it.
Part A is not free. It is premium free. There is a deductible with time limits. And there are services in the hospital that are separate and not covered.

Yes, tell them you are low income and want your Medicare part B premiums paid for by the state. There's 3 programs and I qualify for all three and maybe you will too. SMS program, SMLB program, I forgot the name of the third program. Also, if they DO start covering the premium, then you can get All the Money Paid Back to you that was Deducted from your check. Now,😊 the state that you live in for Medicaid, also has low-income subsidy program for your Part D prescription coverage and co-pays. I hope this helps you 🙏
Are you talking about SS. Medicaid is SSI, is the welfare based program, they completely review all of your financial resources, and income in order to see if you qualify. SS calculates your benefit amount from your highest 35 year work history. If you don't have 35 years, they put a 0(zero) for every year under that amount. Sign up for a SSA account, and the closer you are to age 62, the more accurate it is. They break down the estimated amount of your benefit from age 62 to age 70. You can also check your work history on your SSA account.

SS calculates your benefit amount from your highest 35 year work history. If you don't have 35 years, they put a 0(zero) for every year under that amount.

You cannot get medical costs in Mexico if you are not a resident. To be a resident you need to have a large enough income.
For 2025, advantage plans have premiums. It is no longer premium free...
It depends on your State, the area you live in and the program you're on.
There are plans with zero premium. Maybe not where you live? Yes they are going to disappear however.
