Posted this on a Dan Buglio video but wanted to post here too since you, Rebecca, and Nick’s success story, along with Dan and Steve Ozanich, are really helping to accelerate my recovery. “Today was my first day back to work in-office after 3 months of maternity leave. Backstory: multiple wild chronic symptoms for the past almost 3 years - it’s like a combo of POTS, CFS, MS - but it’s all one thing: TMS. Known about TMS for a year, got pregnant with 3rd baby shortly after (unexpectedly) and TMS symptoms caused complications that resulted in baby having to be delivered 6 weeks early. Needless to say, it has been TOUGH. But knowing about TMS has kept me going. During our team lunch today, symptoms flared. Felt like I would pass out. I calmly excused myself to the mother’s pumping room, laid down, and breathed. Little fear because I knew what was happening, even with insomnia. Relaxed and accepted all sensations. Allowed them to wash over me with a lens of safety and self-compassion. After 20 mins, I felt better. My coworkers said I looked flush but I told them yeah nothing to worry about. But they said it was nice to see me smiling. And then I continued to feel better and better as the work day went on. And now as I sit on the couch nursing my baby at home, I feel at ease. This was a huge victory. In the past, those sensations sent me to the ER (only to be sent home after finding nothing). You guys, I have 3 little kids, and my husband recently quit his job to go back to school so I’m the sole provider right now. If I can experience dramatic shifts like this during high stress times, you can too. Keep your spirits up and keep going. I’m doing it too.”

This was one of the most interesting and relatable recovery stories I have listened to, and I’ve listened to a lot!!! Thank you so much Nick and Rebecca for sharing it. The deep sense of ownership Nick has for his TMS journey, his clear explanation of what helped and why and the recovery journey of someone with migraine and sickness is inspiring. I am on my TMS journey and am moving forward with my life despite the pain and currently finding the somatic tracking/experiencing/movement really useful but true self compassion and truly living in the moment are still things I need to work on and I have learnt a lot from this video. I have signed up to Rebecca’s course and I look forward to exploring these things more. Thank you again Nick for sharing and well done. @@Mozzos Such an incredible story. Thanks so much for sharing. Nick I relate so much to your experience. Just the severity of it. And also how you recovered. The pushing your way through the pain. I have completed my recovery from severe crps, I can now walk and have I would say 95 % pain free. I forced myself to walk again. It was brutal, my foot which was dark purple swelled up like a balloon but after 6 weeks the pain went away and the swelling finally receded. However I am now in my second round of debilitating tms, namely fatigue that has me bedridden 22 hours a day..,I would love to ask you a question about experience with fatigue. @@rebeccatolinmind-bodycoach Rebecca, I notice when I’m happy I leave my body - I’m not sure how to stay calm, embodied, and happy other when I swim or in nature - would somatic tracking or something else help? Ty
@@tuulafai4046 Dear Tuula, Sometimes our subconscious mind has a negative association with happiness. That can happen if it wasn't safe or supported to feel happiness when we were growing up. But we can reconnect with our innate happiness or contentment by practicing it in small doses, and really feeling it in the body. You can try to savor whatever makes you happy, like swimming or being in nature, lingering in those body sensations. You can also consciously bring them to mind throughout your day and see if you can get a glimmer of joy. Yes, you can also work with happiness through somatic tracking, noticing how that sensation feels in your body and reminding yourself you are safe. But keep in mind that we want to work with whatever is present. Once we allow and experience the full range of emotions and sensations, happiness bubbles up more naturally. I hope that helps, dear one! 🥰
I'm so excited to have you in Be Your Own Medicine, Hannah! It's going to be a powerful experience. I agree that Nick is incredibly inspiring. I look forward to seeing how you blossom too!

This is the second interview Ive heard of Nicks experience and SO glad it popped up today! What a fantastic story and delightful to listen to him-and the great vibe between you & him. I just began today, diving back into the TMS issues that have resurfaced after being SO much better for months. Thank you Nick and Rebecca for putting this together. Super excellent!
So glad that Nick's amazing story is inspiring you and that you're diving back into the TMS approach! As you heard, it was a game-changer for us both. Flare-ups are normal but now you have tools to navigate them! You've got this!
I'm so happy you're joining Be Your Own Medicine, Lindsay! I agree that Nick is incredibly inspirational. We all have that potential inside us and I hope the course deepens your own healing! 💖
Thanks for sharing. I get started with fitness ( I am stil Afraid for the Pain and I also want to run again) the Things you Said ( sorry for my bad English I am from Holland) are very importend for me
Super inspiring talk, thanks so much for this interview, I dived into TMS a few weeks ago but your work has finally brought the last puzzle piece I think!! 2 similar questions tho: 1. I still struggle with finding a balance between challenging myself and treating myself in a mindful self-compassionate way, e.g. when Nick was running in pain when is it challenging, and when too much? 2. Also, I learned today about challenge vs overwhelm zone but where is the threshold? I do have anxiety and feel uneasy and overwhelmed often when being outside or at social events. Usually, I just try to sit with it (now with the tools instead of just getting through it) - mostly it resolves after some time. Is it still okay to experience this kind of overwhelm or shall we avoid these moments totally? This would mean for me I have to give up things that I would still want to do. I'm torn. Many thanks ♥
Thanks for your wonderful comment and questions! I"m super happy to hear that you're embracing the TMS approach and that my work is adding the last puzzle piece! How amazing! To answer your questions: The threshold for challenge is different for everyone and it's really about your internal state. Once you start dipping too far the overwhelm zone, when you can, return to your safe zone. Signs of overwhelm can be mental agitation or rumination, anxiety, fear that begins to overtake you, pain etc. If/when you can't stay mindful and watch the sensations through a lens of safety, it's generally time to back off and do something soothing for your nervous system. You want to create a corrective experience, not a retraumatizing one. Nick has an exceptionally high pain threshold so he could witness excruciating pain and even laugh. That would not be me! I would not be able to stay present with moderate to high pain so I'd return to safety, or pendulate between something that feels comfortable and something that feels uncomfortable. If you can sit with the sensations with outcome independence, that's great. But if you can't, that's okay too. It's important to be compassionate and prioritize safety or challenge, not overwhelm since the brain/nervous system shut down in this ladder state. Sometimes overwhelm is going to happen as you challenge your limits. That's okay. Just accept that too and adjust as needed. Your attitude about it is key! You're doing great and I encourage you to keep going!!
Thanks Lego, after we tapped it I apologised to Rebecca cause I thought i did a terrible job. But it appears to have turned out great! Just that inner critic at play again. Thanks a bunch and I hope you are well.
This is an amazing story of healing and self love❤️ Thanks Nick and Rebecca for sharing 🙏🏼 And I recognize the power of surrender! Are john Sarnos books applicable for chronic fatigue and overwhelm in the body? Which one would be a good starting point? I completely acknowledge now that my body is not broken just stuck with unreleased trauma. This is so enpowering aldready and feel the somatic tracking is helping. Rebecca, how can I recieve your guidance?
Hi Elizabeth! I'm so happy to receive all your wonderful comments and sense your empowerment already! YOU ARE NOT BROKEN! Repressed emotions and trauma can cause SO many symptoms. But they aren't permanent, as Nick so beautifully shows us! John Sarno's work IS applicable for fatigue and a sense of overwhelm. I recommend The Mind-Body Prescription, as he writes about a range of symptoms. After coaching and teaching many people through their recoveries, I've put together a systematic recovery program that walks you through the steps to recovery! Hi there, Thankyou guys for sharing all the great info. I’m on my way to recovery and just hit a dip. My headaches have come back more intense. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to get rid of them?
Great job! Dips are part of the recovery process. Keep doing the things that have been helping you and view the headaches with outcome independence. They're just another mind-body symptom and as you bring mindfulness to them, work with thoughts and emotions and move on with your life, they can resolve. Most importantly, don't try to "get rid of them" as that scares your poor amygdala and keeps it activated!
Hi can you help me with finding the right Dr John sarno. I’m wanting to read the book you guys mention about. Is there a link to his book? Thanks Isabela

Very helpful.. mind you, i would not cope with what nick went through. Jon bernie, my spiritual teacher said " spiritual awakening and healing are one and the same thing " i Agree.
Yes! I recovered from CFS by: 1) Learning the mind-body knowledge, 2) Establishing somatic practices to bring a felt sense of safety and, 3) Gently introducing more activity with outcome independence to the symptoms. You might enjoy Jenny's video on the subject! th-cam.com/video/m3oY7soFJYc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-R7O1k4LyWTYeDLI
This was very interesting but I found it concerning how hard he pushed himself. Like the 9 days of pain. I wasn’t sure about whether that was self compassionate or punishing. His relapse didn’t surprise me to be honest. I’m not sure what to think of this interview.
I hear you! For most of us, pushing through so much pain would be counterproductive but Nick has a high pain threshold. The key is to learn your own limits and gently challenge them. I hope that makes sense!
Thank you for the great interview. Nick, if you see this: at about 40:00 you talk about the relapse from hell where you felt like you were going to die and were fighting the symptoms and it had your full focus (I feel like this is about where I am!), then you just accepted it and surrendered basically. What was the progression after that: did it gradually ease and you went back to just somatic tracking and living your life? Just curious about how the bad relapse got better.
I was going through a lot of life stuff at that time which is why my brain freaked out. It’s all still a bit blurry and hard to recall because I was in a bad way and hadn’t slept for some time. I’m pretty sure all the symptoms just stopped and disappeared. I didn’t stop somatic tracking, being present and self compassion. Hope you find peace and comfort.
Such a great question and thanks for answering Nick! I also found that a deep sense of surrender preceded my own recovery. I see acceptance, a lack of fighting our body, to be a pivotal element for many people. It can lead to a radical transformation!
@jessicanilsson5941 If you're not physically safe, it's vital to find safety. But most of the time, we're talking about a person not feeling emotionally secure. In that case. we work with emotions, thoughts and behaviors to find a better sense of safety.
In this approach, we learn the knowledge that the fatigue is a false warning signal, establish practices to calm our nervous system and then introduce movement in slow, steady steps to retrain the brain (and improve mood!). So the answer is yes but do so carefully.
So... Nick continuing to go running, even when in severe pain, in the end led to a break through because he did it out of (self) love, instead of out of fear?
Hi Jossje, Self-compassion was a big part of it because it made his brain feel safe. But daily practice of somatic meditations was huge too. That increased Nick's capacity for the sensations to the point where he truly wasn't scared of them. I summarize what worked for Nick in the blog I just released today! 💖 www.rebeccatolin.com/blog/chronic-pain-cure
@@rebeccatolinmind-bodycoach Just because many coaches say it can't happen overnight. Do you think it can all happen in a single moment with a serious mind shift? Is fear the problem, like walking on water in the Bible? It's no coincidence that I'm asking this. I've been studying this mind body thing for about a year and yesterday I had a 10-point migraine all day. I watched this video and I told myself that it was enough, I was encouraged, I felt great faith and in 5 minutes my migraine was completely gone...
@@Kovek1988 How amazing! That's fantastic! I have a feeling that your year of mind-body studies paved the way for this. And clearly you had great faith and a positive feeling state! Why not? "Miracles" happen in an instant after all!
Some of his symptom description was pretty graphic. TMSers can often pick up on the symptoms of others...maybe just a mention at the beginning of the interview. Not at all suggesting he should have changed his story.
@@janiswright9494 Yes, I hear you! It's a fine line because people really want to hear their specific symptoms named to realize they can recover. But I do understand your point too! Thanks for sharing that!

@@rebeccatolinmind-bodycoach I had running in the gym! My brain is confused 🙈
Super inspiring talk, thanks so much for this interview, I dived into TMS a few weeks ago but your work has finally brought the last puzzle piece I think!! 2 similar questions tho:

Thanks

Very helpful.. mind you, i would not cope with what nick went through. Jon bernie, my spiritual teacher said " spiritual awakening and healing are one and the same thing " i Agree.
Thank you Dom! For me, healing and spiritual awareness are very intertwined as well.
Realized after the last 3 years of super high stress my Crash is looking like CFS...( add more later)..
Rebecca can you keep going through fatigue with CFS?
Yes! I recovered from CFS by: 1) Learning the mind-body knowledge, 2) Establishing somatic practices to bring a felt sense of safety and, 3) Gently introducing more activity with outcome independence to the symptoms.

Love Anita Moorjani
She's amazing!
@@Mozzos Thanks so much
Such a great question and thanks for answering Nick! I also found that a deep sense of surrender preceded my own recovery. I see acceptance, a lack of fighting our body, to be a pivotal element for many people. It can lead to a radical transformation!

If you not ”safe ” been a caregiver !! How to heal that ?
@jessicanilsson5941
If you're not physically safe, it's vital to find safety. But most of the time, we're talking about a person not feeling emotionally secure. In that case. we work with emotions, thoughts and behaviors to find a better sense of safety.
I feel exhausted so do I rest or make myself exercise to imorove mood?
In this approach, we learn the knowledge that the fatigue is a false warning signal, establish practices to calm our nervous system and then introduce movement in slow, steady steps to retrain the brain (and improve mood!). So the answer is yes but do so carefully.
Where do I find somatic tracking that I can use?
You can try a free somatic tracking meditation when you sign up for my mailing list! www.rebeccatolin.com/newsletter

So theoretically, if I pick myself up and go for a run with the most magical faith in existence, I should be able to heal immediately? Theoretically?
Yes theoretically but Nick paved the way with lots of study and inner work before this moment! This is how it typically works for us mortals. ;-)

Thanks for that suggestion. What kind of warning would be helpful for my future reference?
Some of his symptom description was pretty graphic. TMSers can often pick up on the symptoms of others...maybe just a mention at the beginning of the interview. Not at all suggesting he should have changed his story.
