      I know, they make everything look so easy and graceful. Nothing ice skating is easy, it all takes work to learn, but I do think that many moves, once you've mastered them, are easy. Forward cross overs, backwards cross overs, one foot glides, and three turns, those things I think are easy once you've got it. I observed that about myself back when I was in school. Seventh grade algebra one was soo hard...very hard. Then I got to eighth grade algebra II and helping some seventh grader with algebra one was like child's play. I am working on my one foot backwards glide...I'm getting pretty good and am gliding for more than five seconds now and starting to see the ten second mark and be pretty stable. At first I couldn't backwards one foot glide at all, not even one second. Gradually I got to one second, then three seconds, then five. What I observe is that for a good skater, a backwards one foot glide is no challenge whatsoever, so that leads me to believe that once I put in the work to get good at it, I'll be able to do it easily.

    Thanks so much for continuing to make these videos! Your detailed teaching is so helpful. I love how these are all in the basics level. I think most people who are more advanced have coaches and benefit from one on one in-person instruction. Those of us who are still learning basics however, really benefit from videos like yours that are so well taught. 👏⛸

      Personal coaches are one way of learning, there are others. A time tested way of learning is to have a group of friends on the ice. You coach them, they coach you, Bob comes in with a new skill today and coaches everyone, it's free, and everyone has a good time. One of the main benefits of formal training is that it puts pressure on you to be there every week and also put in some practice time ahead of your lesson. As long as you keep paying the fee, and don't quit, you'll get better...but there are other ways.

    Because of " Hockey Glide and your T Position " , I’ve made an inside Spread Eagle then an outside Spead Eagle. It’s help me to go backward but I decided to keep away the fears ’cause, it’s my last time before I’m gone to my little Mountain which is a sport complexe that Tony Parker ’s buying and it’s openning all long years.
    I’ve had a passionate dance teacher at my 3 .... I’ve had also an English teacher so passionate that she brings us to live in London , Passion is a real revolution to teach and my last one is You Julia.
    I follow your teachings and no one else but yourself.
    And , like you , I’m more secure on my left leg. For me , eveything’s gonna be all right.
    I thank you because you’re right and I will continue to use T Position plus Hockey glide, Your Greatest deal for everyone 🌬🏳☁️

    Thank you so much for these tutorials!! I don’t have the money for lessons but am extremely motivated to get good at figure skating. TH-cam is super helpful for things like that. I’ve been skating for almost two years on and off. Hopefully I can improve more through the winter!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it!

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      Classes are only one way to learn...there are others. Many youtube videos, like this one, are probably better and more detailed than what an instructor would give you. Not many peoplel are as talented at coaching as is Coach Julia and other good TH-cam coaches. How much coaching can you get in a half hour or an hour a week? You can get a lot more coaching than that watching TH-cam, from various talented coaches that each have a different focus on the subject at, ahem, foot. Another problem is that weekly coaching probably goes faster than can you. Week 1, coach says "do it like this." Ten, twenty, thirty weeks later, maybe you can do it. By that time coach has covered twenty more topics and you have a practice list a mile long and none of it is up to snuff. A time honored way to learn is to have a group of friends on the ice. You show them what you are doing and coach them, they show you what they are doing and coach you. It's fun, free, and effective.

      I'm into hockey tool and that footwork at 4:12 is so foreign to me but it looks efficient! I watched it like 20 times it's so strange to me. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but I've typically seen in power skating the lead leg is going to remain down and the trailing foot gets opened up to initiate a "mohawk". Cool stuff. Check out how BK does it! th-cam.com/video/9rq20DK91Lo/w-d-xo.html

    Trying to learn this right now ☺️ I have trouble opening my legs like that.. My toes naturally point inwards so I can really feel it in my knees when I try to bend them outwards. I guess thats why my eagle is really small and often ends in spin I think 🤔🤔 Anyway, I'v only been skating for 2 weeks and thanks to you I can already do forward crossovers, a bit of backwards skating, one foot glides etc :) Thanks so much! 💞💖

      Oh my gosh, welcome to figure skating! That is so exciting. I am glad my videos have helped. Work on stretching your hip flexors,it will help give you a wider stance for your spread eagles.

    • @xxjuiciixx
      @xxjuiciixx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey, former ballerina here. Your turn out should not come from your knees but actually your hips as it is the entire leg that should be turned out not just the foot, so if you feel it in your knees you're doing it wrong and can actually hurt yourself.
      Something you can try to get the hang of it is to, off ice, stand upright and lift one leg off the floor in front of you, then squeeze your bum cheeks together and try to rotate the entire lifted leg from the hip, as in the knee and foot should follow together, always pointing in the same direction.
      I can see your comment was 11 months ago so maybe you've already worked it out, but I'd thought I'd share this tip in case someone else is struggling with the same thing, as it really is very harming to turn out from the knee.

I'm watching videos and looking for information as I also have this problem, and even when I was skating in competition I couldn't do this move, but now that I returned just for fun I was decided to try spread eagles, as I have not to take time for jumps. I did know it can be damaging so I wasn't sure how much to "force" it. I will try this exercise.

    Julia, I've been doing these stretching exercises over three months, now I can do the 180 degrees toe turn on the floor, but while on ice my toes break the line inevitably, I use hockey skates and it occurred to me to question why hockey players always bend their knees doing the inside spread eagle. Hi ! I'm trying to learn the eagle but I feel like I don't have much flexibility in my feet, even off the ice I have to force myself to be in this position. Can exercises help me ? if yes, which ones?

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      yes of course. Just practice stretching on the carpet at the wall, focusing on opposing your feet a full 180 degrees. It takes quite some flexibility to get those last few degrees. Not 170, not 175, a full 180.

    Can you use hockey scares for figure scating?.. i still need to get figure scates

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, but it makes it more difficult. Use the correct tool for the job. If you are figure skating, you need figure skates, and the sooner the better. Figure skates feel totally different and require a different approach. The more time you have on hockey skates the more you will have to unlearn.

    I skate outdoors no wall to practice against

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, I am a bit jealous that you get to skate out doors. If you can find something to stretch against at home, like a table or a counter, that will at least help a bit.

      Put on your guards, get off the ice, find a high bench/wall on normal floor and stretch there¿

    • @CoachJulia

      😬 Well, it is an old move, a lot of figure skating moves were named 75, even 100 years ago, so they didn’t think the same way about things.

      Probably not....how about instead you graduate past the fourth grade mentality. Another option is just to call it the "Eagle."
