You are hands down the BEST skate teacher on TH-cam. You leave nothing out and give all the small tips that other teachers don't seem to think about anymore - any time I think "yeah but how? What do I do with..." you give me the answer! Plus, you're super engaging and fun to watch. Please keep it up, I'm learning so much and you're giving me the confidence to try to new skills and level up my skating!
Katie that is quite a difficult skill to master. I've practiced it holding to the perimetral bar or the rink for for so long but now I can do it freely and love it on both sides. Still working on the heel-heel styling out.. Thank you for your video I do approcciare them a lot.
Thank you for the bit about doing it on outside edges to go in a straight line! I’ve been trying to get that for ages and I’ve been convinced it’s having inflexible hips that’s stopped me. It would be nice if it’s my edges instead! I’ll have to give it a try on my next quiet indoor skate (soft landing for the inevitable fall!)
Wowoowo excellent 👌 video like always and the tips are a PRO! Thank you ❤️ and Happy New Year 2022! All the best for you and your family. Hope your YT channel continue to grow 🪴🪴🪴 💋😘
This is so common with the spread. Watch that hip doesn’t come around. Make sure you’ve got a bit of roll and lean on the inside edges. It takes a lot of practice, you’ll get it ⭐️⭐️💕💕
Ouch. 🤕 why is it the falls always happen when we don’t wear the knee pads! Never fall when I’m wearing them, take them off: SPLAT! Hope you’re not too sore and you’re back skating again soon xx
Lay back ina Bauer is soooo beautiful! But I can't even do a spread eagle circle yet, I do part circle nearly the size of a two-foot spin and then the wheels and the inertia disagree about where should we be going 🤣 Meanwhile I practice stretching 😁
Love the explanation! 😂 I know exactly what you mean! A bit more roll and slightly less V position feet should make that spread a little longer. Honestly, it’s the most awkward position so make sure your body is warmed up before you try it, you may get more hip movement that way. You’ve got this xx ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I came back here after watching the side surf video and thought I should do an update! I don't train it too often anymore, but now I can do a wide circle and sometimes even keep it straight for a little while, and I can go back to skating forward instead of turning to backwards ❤
I’d recommend to always try it once you’re fully warmed up. It’s one of those really awkward positions. I do find yoga helps me My hips don’t love this position 😢
Hi Katie, Guess this is a good place as any to ask.. Can you do a spiral or arabesque video and teach the correct way to do it... were debating at the rink what is the correct way? You know where your flat back and leg lifted directly behind or torso and shoulders to kinda to the side and raise leg . oh and please show how to do backwards. We gotta have all those babysteps. Thank you.
@@Skatie yes but my question is if jts correct for a flat back also instead of the way you do in this video? I'm probably not using the correct words in my question.
@@tracyheath6076 oh I see. Both ways are totally acceptable. I think it depends on what’s most comfortable and level of flexibility etc. If the free leg is up to hip height then definitely classed as an arabesque. We always used to totally lower the torso too but the more modern way seems to be more of an arched back.
What surfaces are you normally skating on? You may need a different type of wheel depending upon if you are skating indoors or outdoors. What skates do you have and have you already changed the stock wheels?
@@Skatie Oh I was using an 4x4 wheel and I use it outdoor I was planning watching you and finding some information about how to put a speed on a roller skates! I was hoping you can help me
It might be a good idea to watch my 9 tips video as that talks about wheels and different hardness and also where to use them. Generally harder wheels are faster but not suitable for outside skating. Outside wheels if you want speed I use around a 85A
whenever i get into the sidesurf position i start to wobble back and foreword until i usually fall foreward onto my hands, would leaning on an inside edge help this and straightening up my legs a little ? i tend to get into the sidesurf with very bent legs cause it makes me lower to the ground..lol
Have you practicing skating on one foot to get your balance?. This is definitely a tricky skill to master so take your time and make sure you’ve unlocked all the fundamentals first. 👍💕🛼
Lots of skaters have the same problem. You can make a tighter V with your feet it just means your circle will be smaller or you’ll do a little spin instead. Still a great practice. Do what feels right for you and listen to your body xx
Do you need to be flexible doing this? I can’t even put my feed in the spread eagle without skates on haha. Anyways thank you so much for the tutorials, they’re helping me so much! 🛼
It’s possible to do the move with your feet less turned out. It just means the circle will be smaller. It’s a pretty uncomfortable position for the hips, be patient with this one. You may need to do some warm up exercises to loosen the muscles and avoid straining them. . 😣 😪

This makes me feel brave enough to try the outside edge variation-thank youuuuuuu!
Do it! It's a great hip stretch too. I definitely felt it in the hips the next day! haha
You’re the best at explaining skate moves Skatie
Thank you so much xx
I've been stuck on this for a while now (I kept transitioning) I'll keep at it, I think I need to do more hip stretches 😅
It’s definitely normal for this to happen. Keep your hips and shoulders pointed into your circle to keep them open. You can do it x
omg same I keep transitioning
The video editing is so cool in your videos! And your teaching is so fun and easy to follow.
Thank you 👍💕🛼
Perfect, the toe down tip is great! thanks!

I'm firsttt💗🥺 thank you for this video. I struggled with the spread eagle for a long time, can't wait to practice with my skates on.❤️
🏆 hope the tips help you x
I'm doing exercises to open up my hips and make them flexible for the side surf skating. Thank for your training video, Katie!
It’s certainly an uncomfortable and very unnatural body position.
Wow I love how you broke down the spread eagle move! Super helpful! Thank you ☺️🙏✨
Glad it helped 👍🛼💕
seeing that you sometimes swing your free leg slightly as you open up the hips helped me so much, I've almost got it now!! ty for the tutorial
Oh that’s great. Well done 🛼💕
I've only been able to do this in a straight line, just realised watching this I must be doing an outside edge!!!

I agree I much prefer to do these types of tricks indoors where it’s slightly softer haha. It’s a really awkward position on the outside edges.

One more variation my dad taught me.
Wobble from inside to outside edge to gain speed.
👍
I've never been told the part about slowly putting down the toe and i can already see that it's what's been causing my biggest problems
I do love to use a guide wheel. It keeps you connected to the floor. Works for lots of moves
Damn everytime im working on something new i get a recommendation❤
TH-cam knows all! 😂 😂 😂
Ugh i just cannot seem to open up my hips! I can make a wide L shape, but thats about it! Do you have any videos that show stretches we can do?
Unfortunately I have no videos with stretches etc. I do yoga and Pilates myself to help with flexibility and turn out etc.

I can circle but people at my local rink do a spread eagle but go straight not in a circle, can you do a video to do it just straight
Make sure to put more weight towards the little toe that will make it a straighter line.

Definitely lean in the inside edge, having a little momentum can really help with the balance too. Try to go into it with a little bit of roll.
