  • Hello Skaters! Welcome back! Today I am going to teach you one of my very favorite skating moves, the Outside Spread Eagle. I LOVE this beautiful gliding maneuver and try and put it in my programs whenever I can. My very favorite skater of all time, Brian Boitano is the spread eagle king. He was an olympic champion for the united states in the 1980s, and if you haven't watched him skate, look him up!

    So excited for this. I need this for my level test coming up. Thanks so much for the great videos. I love that you give some stretches one can also do off ice. I’m in my 40s and started less than 2 years ago and your videos have helped me so much. Thank you so much

    The close-up on your blades was pretty insightful, Coach J. Your trailing blade is resting on the main rocker but the leading blade seems to be contacting only at the tail end. I'll keep that in mind. I can do the outside spread eagle but only with my knees bent quite a bit and haven't been able to straighten them. (I'm also a man, which makes it more difficult.) I do need to change the entrance--right now I'm doing the hockey glide entrance.

    The inside spread eagle seems easier since you don't need 180 degree turnout. But going to the outside requires more than 180 as you've shown here.

    I have super flexible hips but I really can't do this :( I think it's because my knees don't turn out (and I can't force them as I dislocated a kneecap some years ago)... I would sooo love to do it!

  • @jfluter
    @jfluter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My coach is having me learn spread eagles. I'm struggling with figuring out the weight transfer (flexibility is not an issue) of the free foot. So does your heel of your free foot actually touch the ice first before fully turning out for the position? I hope this makes sense. Also, is it common to fall from spread eagles? What scares me the most from outside edge spread eagles is the possibility of falling backwards. Keep in mind that I'm an adult skater in my 40s (been skating for about 10 years, although my progress has been SLOW), and so I don't bounce like the much younger skaters at my rink. lol.

    Hi Coach Julia, I don't lace my skates to the top. I leave the top loop free, to get that flip flop (part of the trick?) Your Ina Bauer is even more awesome!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that is something I usually advise my students against. The hooks go up to the top for a reason! But I agree, it does make skills like the spread eagle easier.

  • @AdivParadise

    So I'm finally working up to my outside spread eagle and thus revisiting this video, and I'm having some difficulty at the transition from the boards to the ice--I can turn out just fine leaning back at the boards, probably because my inside spread eagle is one of my most-practiced moves (I just love spread eagles). But on the ice, when I try to do the heel-flop, I find my skate doesn't flop all the way parallel, and even if I'm on my outside edges, the angle is less than 180 degrees, maybe more like 150 degrees--which of course is not very conducive to continuing to travel in the direction of the circle! Or traveling much at all, really. My starting point is not *that* flexible (30yo guy; started skating at 28 without much to promote flexibility before that), so I assume I just need to work at it, but is this something you see in your own students that might indicate something else getting in my way, like a mental block, not allowing my tush to cantilever me enough, not putting the free leg out far enough when the heel comes down, etc?

    Is it normal that your ankles feel pressed against the boots when you do spreadeagles? Mine do, to the point of getting bruises sometimes. Does this mean I lace my boots too tight? Also, I think my left knee discomfort lately came from straining it when I tried to increase my turnout incorrectly. So it’s important to follow coach Julia’s advice - open from the hips, not knees or ankles.

    Coach julia I have a question that's probabaly most likely not based on this video. Okay, so you have skin peeling on the outer parts of your index fingers cause ei kinda have it and I think it's from tying my skates and I just wanted to know if anyone else had/has that problem

      You just have to change your laces, because the ones you have now have too little friction and you have to pull them and harm your skin. Your current laces are either old or have flat structure (not rounded). I also had this problem once long long ago.

    🌬Julia🤍 teached me all I know today. I’ve never had another coach nor some lessons . And last time I ’ve gone to the rink, it was my 37th time on ice. Because of Julia I Master All Pivots which I finish with spin on two legs and then on one leg, " miss the backward Outside Pivot " ...
    She’s my Superwoman, The three Variations of Lunge were also natural. I know all stops, "miss Tango Stops "..... Forward Stroking even the Russian Forward Stroking. Forward crossover but " miss backward crossover "..... Outside and inside spread eagle. Spirals , Dance Steps...... Julia Teachings helped 🏳me and were a Great Deal to continue to learn with herself ☁️on line❕
    So, in order to keep things straight, Julia turned the attorney that I was which dancing into an ice dancer ⛸🤍
