  • Scheduled maintenance on a motorcycle is more than just an oil change and checking some bolts. On a Pan America, there are a number of checks to ensure your bike is well maintained according to the factory service manual. This is part one of a four part series on performing scheduled maintenance on the Harley Davidson Pan America.

    Love this series as well. My dealer wants $900+ in labor for the 10k service. It will take me longer to complete. but I'll know everything that has been done. Great production and editing!

    Great videos! Handy tip - when I adjust the gap in the clutch cable I use a nickel as a feeler gauge. It’s about 1.8mm, which is in spec.

      I used to have some harbor freight torque wrenches, they are ok for occasional use but didn’t last for me. CDI is a Snap On brand, my only complaint is the numbers could be easier to read for my old eyes.

    Worth paying for if you could be sure they are doing it. This is the only way to be sure it's done. I trust that most HD service is doing it but I have found things left loose or not adjusted right after service.

    Good video but I like running this kind of video at 1.25 or 1.5 speed and this is why it cost $400 for a mechanic to do it cuz it's very detailed

    • @MikesMotorbikeChannel
      @MikesMotorbikeChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks. It’s a struggle trying to balance showing enough details without dragging on too much. My little “reaction” at the beginning was just a tongue in cheek poke at folks that think scheduled maintenance is just an oil change. It is indeed more detailed than that.

    Similar to you, I do not claim to be a mechanic. I DO claim that my work has been consistently better than the stealership. Watching all parts of this video series has been terribly helpful. With the maintenance manual, anyone SHOULD be able to figure this out, but damn it's nice to see it before tackling it.
    Is there some way I can compensate you for posting this? I can't imagine 4400+ TH-cam views pays much for the advertisements they keep interrupting your video with.

    • @MikesMotorbikeChannel
      @MikesMotorbikeChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I actually don't make a dime off these videos because TH-cam does not pay out until you have 1,000+ subscribers. I make an average of 10 to 50 cents is someone buys one of the tools listed in my Amazon links :) . This is just a hobby from me, hence why my uploads are so infrequent. Just glad to know people find them helpful.

    Good information. I am one that is having problems with my radiator hose. When it is cold its almost ok. After riding the hose swells it touches the exhaust. I am fighting now to get it fixed under warranty. Other than that the bike has been great.
    The dealer i took my bike to for the 1k service didn’t do most of that I’m sure. They also weren’t helpful about the hose. Another dealer called HD to get some action.

    Question on Sprocket and Chain. When replacing the Sprocket and Chain does is require to replace the seal behind the front sprocket? Why I asked I had the dealer do the service for replacing the chain and sprocket. Which they told me the seal was also required to be replaced. It wasn't leaking before hand but now it leaks oil from behind the front sprocket

    • @MikesMotorbikeChannel

      Yes, service manual does state to replace the seal. Sounds like they didn’t do it right.

    Very good video. I have a question ⁉️ when I went to San Jose, California in December to help my ex wife move to Sacramento, because her husband unexpectedly passed away in October so to save money she is moving in to his home which he rented to his best friend several years ago. While I was there in San Jose, I visited a Harley dealership to check out the Pan America S and I asked the Mgr. what I would be looking at for the bike, out the door. Now, the MSRP. for the Special is approximately $20K. After all that dealerships add on to that MSRP. ie., dealer prep, etc.etc.etc. the Sales Mgr. told me I could expect to pay around $28000 out the door. I'm not kidding... So, I said WHAT!!? I had to make sure that he wasn't just having a laugh at my expense. He however was dead ass serious. I thanked him and assured him I would not be back to buy the bike from his dealership if the mark up was going to be so high. If you or any of the viewers have any information on how the pricing inside the dealerships works and, or any information on how I might go about buying one without being robbed. Thank you kindly 😌

    • @MikesMotorbikeChannel
      @MikesMotorbikeChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no inside scoop on how dealers do their pricing, but I like to say that the best bike is the one that does what you want for the price you are willing to pay. That said, I try to not get hung up on where the dealer makes their money, as far as MSRP, trade-in values, this fee, that fee, etc... but just focus on the out the door price. Do I feel it's fair? If not, keep shopping. I did pay a little bit over MSRP with dealer fees for my Pan America, but that was back in June of 2021, buying the very first one this dealer had on the floor with the two tone paint, ARH and spoked rims. But I don't feel too bad since MSRP on a 2023 is now $1,900 more than what it was in 2021 before getting into any dealer fees, taxes, etc..
