My 2021 HD Pan America Special has been the best bike that I've ever owned. I've been very pleased with its performance and the service that I've received at my local dealership.

Test rode the Pan Am at a motorcycle event…As a former Mx racer I loved how it felt…Never bought one but a year later picked up a 2018 Yamaha Super Tenere with 1200 miles on it and have been loving the ADV ride ever since….👊

Thanks for another great video! My 2022 PA has 16,694 miles with a few issues along the way, VIN Error message displayed on odometer, blank TFT screen twice. Both of these were cleared up with a software update. My fuel pump starting making the same noise as yours at around 11K and was replaced under factory warranty. I trimmed the radiator hose like you did just as a precaution. Like you the bike has never left me stranded. Ive ridden to Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Grand Canyon North and South Rim, and Zion Nat Park. Ive owned a Road King, and Three Street Glides all ridden over 40K and by far the Pan America is my favorite motorcycle. I have a great dealership with two technicians trained for PA maintenance. I want to thank you again for all the effort you put into your videos they are some of the best out there. Looking forward to your opinion of the Lone Rider Foot Pegs!!

A sad day when a lot of harley shops were sold to investment groups and no more local owners. Customer service has gone way down hill,
I wanted this bike but my treatment was not good and i stopped by a triumph dealer and what a difference, they acted like the harley dealer when i bought two off my harleys but they lost my third purchase, tiger 1200 for adv now.

Thank you, for being a first adopter. You may be pleased to know that everything you mentioned as an annoyance (or negative) has been corrected on the 2023, with the exception of the stands, which still suck. There is even a deflector now for the radiator so that the fan does not blow hot gas up the rider's left leg any longer !
I agree with your assessment totally (smile factor) on the Pan America. I love my PA Special (2023) and at the time of this writing have 1696 miles on the odometer. I purchased the machine for the power plant, the tech, the sleek durability, and the comfort and handling (ARH, and other). This machine is superb, and as of this writing the PA is still the top sold ADV bike in America.
The jiffy stand, and the center stand, don't work quite right because of the ARH (believe it or not). The ARH relaxes so that the stands (both) end up being too long ... you need to lean the bike right to put the jiffy stand down, and you need to be very strong to rock the bike back on the center stand. I am confident the York people will get this worked out soon. But, again, I did not buy the bike for its stands, I bought the bike for the Revolution Max platform, etc, as mentioned above.

Thanks for this insightful video. I purchased a 2023 Pan America about eight months ago and I have about 2k miles on it (I know, only 2k miles, but I have other Harleys to "keep happy"). So far, I have not experienced the issues you have, but I will be on the lookout for them. BTW, I took mine into Harley and they updated the engine software, but I was surprised later to learn they did not update the "infotainment" software, of which there is an update. The update does have some nice features and I was able to download the new version from Harley's website and update the display without difficulty. Thanks again.

Great summary Mike, I have 22 PA and I've only had 2 issues, the Radiator hose (replaced and I added heat shield insulation to it) and the screen went blank only once. I did the software update myself (5 min) and its been working great. I do not ride every day or every weekend but when I do, its usually 1K miles or more from home. I did a ride to Vegas trouble free with tons of smiles ( 3,200 miles ). I will replace this seat, I found it not to be very comfortable and will look for a reach seat to bring me closer to the ground. I'm 5'8'' and can reach the ground no issues but I like to have a little bend on my knees when I'm at full stop. and I can't tell you enough the BIGGEST thing I hate is the Side Stand/Jiffy Stand - Actually a Horrible stand. I also wish Harley Would increase the fonts on the display for the side items. That can be done via software......and I agree, the NAV functionality is really BAD .......Ride safe sir. GOD Bless - see ya on the road....

Really bad knocking, loss of oil pressure. It didn't have the loose metal grinding sound. I've read something before about the oil pump line coming apart from the pump so no oil gets sent up top. I've only read about it once a few years ago and can't remember the details.
It was covered under the original 2 year warrenty (I bought an extra 3 years warrenty when I bought it).

    2022 Pan America here:
1). Multiple random times bike would just die. Seems to happen mostly when going from high RPMs to quick slowdown/stop. Just dies out.
2). Hard starts when cold weather. Seems to have fixed that issue.
    3). Poor Bosch connector terminations.....repaired.
4). ECM had to be replaced.
5). Currently in the shop with a blown head gasket/piston ring. Not properly seated from factory. This is at 5,000 miles.
6). Almost forgot, handle bars were not "square" with the front tire. I made some adjustments when I added bar risers but it's still noticeable for me and drives me nuts. Argued with mechanic numerous times and just dealt with it myself.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this bike, and still do, when it's not in the shop. Some fixes they were able to get to in a day but others have taken a week or more. I've stopped trying to keep up with how many times and how long this bike has been in the shop. Everything has been covered, so far, by HD but I only have a little over a year left on my warranty. I've decided that I will pay it off before the warranty runs out and trade it in for a BMW 1250 GSA. I was trying to stay HD but this has been my worst experience ever with a vehicle/bike. They definitely have some issue with their 2021 and 2022 year models. Haven't heard anything about the 2023's yet.
One other mention..... My dealership has been pretty good with trying their best to help me, other than the handlebar issue, but a LOT of this falls on HD themselves. Yes, many dealerships/mechanics despise the Pan America and would rather not even fool with them but HD doesn't provide much help to the dealerships either. My mechanics have no idea what done codes mean as there isn't any information on them. I had to find a video from Yeager's Cycles (great channel) to find out what to do and show the mechanic. Crazy.
Good luck to you, Sir, as your channel has also been a big help to me! I will stick around until I trade mine in but will miss your detailed videos!

2022 with 2000 miles runs great so far. No problems what so ever. The only thing I don't like is the kickstand. If you load it up it drops even lower and you have to really tilt it to the right to get the kick stand down. Which is sketchy AF with all that extra weight on it. Other than that I love it.

I have the 2023 RA1250 Special and everything you say is spot on for me the Bluetooth is iffy at best and will not connect to my Cardo system so I go direct to my phone with that. One issue I have had with mine is the little warning light that comes on in the heads up display three trips to the dealership and no resolution just had it in for the 10k service and finally they say they found the problem seems the right hand control module loses communication which also causes an annoying delay on power up of the bike. Seems this is a know problem. I also have had the fuel pump issue as well and have had the bike just shut off while coming to a stop once. With all that though I love the bike and the ride. Thanks for a great video good to hear I’m not the only one with these opinions.

I had a first batch pan am special. I put 11K on it in a year and a half but it had issues along the way. My bike had starting and running issues. The bike either wouldn't start, or it would run then not start, like when I'd stop for gas. The bike didn't have the ARH but at times it would lower. Sometimes it would raise and other times it wouldn't, staying in the low position. I ride 1000 mile loops regularly and decided that I couldn't have a bike that wasn't reliable. Harley bought it back for a totally acceptable price.
The bike was a total hoot to ride, when it ran. My dealership really tried to keep the bike running, I can't complain about them and I still have my 17 Ultra Classic.
I'm on a KTM 890 Adventure as an ADV replacement and with almost 11K in 8 months it has been a more reliable bike. Not that it hasn't had an issue or two along the way. My screen went completely blank on a trip but when I stopped for fuel it came back on and hasn't done it again. Luckily, the bike kept running even with the screen blacking out. It hasn't done it since. I miss the extra HP but that is about it.

Glad to see a new video.. Two Thumbs up!
I have a 22 that I bought 6 months ago and put on 9,200 miles. I had the cold start issue which a update fixed.the dealership said the same thing “we don’t just do updates “ WTH! At about 3,500 miles my fuel pump started to fail (screeching pump trying to prime) dealership fixed it during the 5,000 service. Then at about another 3,500 miles the fuel pump is starting to fail!! Now I’m waiting on the crappy dealership to get one coming it’s been a month! Also my front brake rotor is out of displacement by 10 mm .. I’ll be switching dealers as they try to blame me for issues instead of just addressing them!
The dealership put on new Dunlop trail max front/rear. I developed a death wobble from 85+. Took it back to the dealership and they said “we couldn’t replicate the issue “ they ask “when you’re at 80-85 are you letting go of the handlebars “ like WTH…
Still one of my favorite motorcycle that I’ve owned..

Despite having a few more issues with my PA Special 2021 than you, it's a great to ride, love it. My recommendation, if you want to enjoy driving Pan America, you must have a good HD dealer near you (updates and repairs), replace the plastic rear holder with a metal one (eg hepco&backer), replace the exhaust (eg Mistral) and add some guards (eg protect bottom and front of the engine, radiator...). Great review 👍

You are 100% correct about everything. I replaced the windscreen system with Madstad, fixed. Not sure how widespread this is, but I tell you, when the fuel reserve light first activates on my my bike it turns off the ARH feature. I can say pretty much the same regarding my 2021 PAS in almost every aspect although I have to say, the service I have received from my local dealership and the one I bought the bike from has been stellar. I do have the ominous fuel pump noise and have considered trying to get it replaced, I've had to have the engine replaced with no questions from the dealer, So all-in-all I'd agree - I would buy this bike again, and I may very well do that at some stage to make sure I do have a model with all the fixes taken care of.

The biggest problem with Harley Davidson is their dealerships. Unfortunately you will need them occasionally. I’ve had similar dealership issues with some European bikes too. With Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki bikes that I’ve had I never had to interact with the dealers after the sale so can’t speak to their customer service.

I lasted 1 year with my 22 PAS. Crappy electronics, dead screen at times, and mine also died in the middle of an intersection which I coasted to the curb because as you know there’s no immediate start up (super dangerous). This happened 2 more times so I sold it back to the dealer. On a BMW GSA now and it’s an absolute superior bike in comparison. Hey, I tried the PA and the bike imo was the worst I’ve ever owned.

I've only 3 dealers to pick from but so far, I've had a back brake issue and they are more than happy to bring it in ASAP for a fix. I've not had any other major issues, some false starts but they are aware of this and the SB's will be done shortly. The Nav on the bike is pants.

I have a 2022 Pan Am Special, like you, my software was not up to date, I updated my software myself, it was realy easy. I had the starter issue, they replaced the starter clutch for me, under warrentee. I still occasionly have battery problems, with it losing charge over night, haven't been able to get it replaced. Other than that, I haven't had any other issues, except for the radiator hose being too close to the exhaust header, mine started to get a burn spot, so I shortened it, and wrapped the header. I have the Army Green version, I really like the colour, I don't like the white front fairing and either orange/yellow/blue tank; but I do like the overall shape. I love the different modes and custom settings.
I prefer the lower screen, with a small extension thing from Amazon, I get no buffeting around mt helmet.

So I bought a 2022 and have been following your channel even before I owned it. I'm screaming in agreement with you. I haven't had any issues yet, but it's 500 miles in. The dealership experience is bull f s×+$. I understand techs are not familiar, but that is not YOUR problem. Cannot duplicate condition, and operating within normal parameters is what many dealerships (cars and bikes) will say. So much so I need a fridge magnet that has that quote.
You have to tell people how to do their job.
Harley could have spent an extra $100 per vehicle and made it proper. I understand apple and android because of licensing cost, but how about some usb ports and maybe a mount for mounting gps (if ford can put it in a bronco why can't Harley).
The windshield is garbage and will be replaced with madstad. The front fender needs to be extended to keep debris from kicking into the unprotected radiator.
I'm rambling now but if you're ever in Arizona, you need to run 89A.
Also what do you do to keep you leg from roasting.

perhaps it's due to me being in PA, but still I've ridden in 95+ days pretty often and have not experienced any issues with engine heat or heat from the exhaust. I'm always wearing my Motoport Kevlar Mesh overpants when I ride. I also don't get stuck in traffic too often, so perhaps that is biggest factor?

    • @leonblack2651
      @leonblack2651 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Which leg? Left side on a 2022, is fan heat from the radiator. It is easily corrected by a fan air deflector available from harley or aftermarket. A cheap plastic one is now included on the 2023. There are better options for solid metal ones, cheaper than Harleys plastic one. I have the aftermarket one. Works great. If the heat is from the right side, it's from the exhaust. A couple of options are available, one from harley, and one aftermarket. Same thing. A cabon fiber piece that mounts over the original heat deflector. Not much help from what I read on forums. I've never tried it as I've never had a problem with excessive heat on the right side.
