  • So the TAS is finally done. This was done by me and Lord Tom and has been an ongoing project since November 2013.
    TASvideos submission with additional information: tasvideos.org/4...
    There is also a commentated version of the run found here: / 40615144
    As a comparision, the current World Record on console for this is can be found here www.speedrun.co...
    This is a Tool Assisted recording. Meaning it was recorded using an emulator with slow motion, save states and rerecording.
    Visit tasvideos.org/ for more information on tool-assisted speedruns, and to watch the many already-existing TASes.

    18:22 This is a map of Japan.
    -The green pipe in the water is the Tokyo international airport's runway which is on the see.
    -The shining coin is Tokyo
    -The castle is the castle of Oosaka
    -The road between is the Meishin highway that connects both cities
    -The bridge between is the real one between the islands of Honshuu
    -The bushes are trees as Japan has a lot of trees.

    I love the annotations because to an untrained observer such as myself, I wouldn't know what all subtle frame-saving tricks are going on. When I watch a Mario 64 TAS run, I don't really need to be told what's going on, because I can clearly see that Mario just glitched through a solid wall and magically reverse ass-rocket propelled himself across the environment. That game is broken as hell.
    The glitches and tricks in SMB3 aren't as flashy and obvious, because SMB3 is one of the most well-refined games ever made and it's not completely obvious when it's being broken, so the annotations make this video as interesting and entertaining as a Mario 64 TAS run despite the gameplay not being as overtly crazy and spectacular.

    I'm a little confused on what TAS is. I assumed it was programmed inputs. If that was the case, how come the leaf was grabbed at 1:52? Is it partial played by a human, partial controller inputs?

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A TAS is just a series of inputs that were made by playing the game frame by frame and with save states. Every single input press was made by me and Lord Tom. It's very rare that any kind of bot/computer takes a part in the making, it's usually only humans.
      The main purpose for the leaf was to fly in 1-Fort, as it's faster to fly up and get the flute than to beat Boom Boom, and it's faster to get the leaf in 1-4 than in the fort, which will also mean that we can have fun with the leaf in the level.
      If curious, I can gladly go into more in-depth on how TASes are made, or more details about this run in general.

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Martijn van Zanen The conveyor belt doesn't start moving until the P-switch timer runs out. If we jump there we can build up some speed to go into the tunnel before the timer goes out and we land on the belt exactly the frame it starts again.

    At 23:55, what do you mean by “not done because world 5 RNG ate the savings”?

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The game's Random Number Generator changes every frame, the only way to change it is to either save or lose frames.
      We found the faster strategy in that Forrt after already working on World 5. But because we saved time in the fort, this also means we got a nother RNG pattern for the Hammer Brothers, which meant we had to delay frames after finishing the levels in W5 to get a good movement pattern. The amount of frames we had to lose evened out the frames we saved in 4-F2, so in the end we didn't care to redo.

    How do you clip through so many blocks? It's not a rhetorical question, I want an answer please!

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have high speed and the right angle, it is possible to bypass the wall trigger for the block.
      For example, let's say that a wall will block you on pixel 4, 5 and 6. If Mario would move at 3 pixels/frame, he could go from pixel 2 into pixel 5, where the wall will block him. If he instead has a speed of 4 pixels/frame, you can move from pixel 3 to 7, which completely skips past the wall detection. Doing this will also push Mario forward while you are inside the block, so it saves a little bit of time.
      The other type of clip, at places like 46:40, is a bit different. First off: Every wall is made out of 16*16 pixel blocks. If you would run or jump into the wall, you'll usually get clipped into it a little bit, like hitting pixel 5 or 6 in the example above. If you do this just above one of these blocks, Mario can actually land on the block beneath him while he's briefly clipped in. At this time, you are able to perform a walljump. The other effect, for the clip, is that Mario will be able to stand up in "midair". The game is programmed so that whenever Mario gets stuck with his head, he'll automatically move to the right until he's through the wall. This can happen at several places in normal gameplay and is a way to avoid getting stuck completely. So you are simply pushed through the wall until the end.
      I hope that answers it =).

    • @_catzee
      @_catzee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I hope I didn't sound rude btw. But I do get it, and that's pretty cool, to me at least. Also, I have another question; I've been watching a lot of TASes lately and I want to know how you made yours so maybe I can start sometime. And you do know about 7-1 wrong warp right? It was as a joke, right?

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This TAS was made using the emulator FCEUX. The method I use for TASing is to simply use something called Frame Advance, which will, as the name suggests, advance the game one frame at a time. Constantly using save states to undo mistakes and try different things. As well as RAM Watch, to read in-game values like Mario's exact position, speed and so on. There are other tools you can use to help out in a TAS, but those are the main once I personally use. You can find a lot more information on here and find all the needed emulators to use: tasvideos.org/WelcomeToTASVideos.html
      Yes, we do know about the 7-1 warp =). Lord Tom was one of the people who helped discover it as well. We also finished a TAS of that a year before we finished this one: tasvideos.org/2588M.html

    • @_catzee
      @_catzee 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another question; is FCEUX compatible with Wii systems or no? I checked out their site but it doesn't say anything about Wii

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is an emulator called FCE Ultra GX that people use on homebrew for the Wii. Not sure if it's the best one or not... I never use homebrew myself.

      And there is so much more we could have added when it comes to the technical aspect of how we did this and how all mechanics in the game work. But it's nice to shed some light on some of them and I'm glad it has been appreciated by most =).

      This run was recorded frame by frame and with save states on an emulator. Everything is done on an unchanged version of the game and there are no cheat codes active. Meaning everything done here works the same exact way on console.
      I can gladly explain stuff in more detail if you want, or point out a timestamp in the run or so.

    I've watched this a few times now, and it's always amazing. A question though: The stutter run that is done sometimes, why isn't it used more often if it gets you P speed sooner? I'd guess having to do with finishing levels at the right time to get the Hammer Bros. in the right positions, or something similar.

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What it does is help us build up the P-meter in less distance, not actually any sooner. If you run in a straight line, you'll build it up in the same amount of frames as if you were stuttering, though as we don't have to lose speed to stutter, we'll be further ahead once the P-meter is filled.
      I hope that explains it =).

    Would you possibly be able to do a TAS of the e-reader levels in the GBA port of this? This is possible due to someone ripping the rom from the eshop with a save to play the levels.

    • @TompaA

      Some people have started such TASes, or just TASed certain levels. Here's one such project that was started, but never finished: th-cam.com/video/LvYWI5pqBN0/w-d-xo.html
      I personally thought of it awhile ago, but when I noticed that the first level was an autoscroller, I lost interest. Might pick it up in the future, not sure :D.

      All TASes record their inputs frame by frame and there are 60 frames/second for this game. So we basically have the game paused and decides what inputs to be made for the following frame, for maximum perfection =).

    how do you always glitch into the wall? I am doing a TAS of this Game myself and I am happy when I get a Walljump

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting a walljump and clipping into the ceiling is the same kind of trick really. Sometimes you have to slow down (or speed up...) to get it to work.
      To land on the "Walljump pixel" you need to move 3 pixels on one frame. If you have P-speed, you move at 56 subpixel units/frame, which is 3½ pixels/frame. Let's say the Walljump Pixel is on pixel 10 and the wall starts on pixel 8. If Mario is on pixel 5, he'll move to 8 on the next frame, which will have him hit the wall and lose the speed. The same goes if you go from pixel 6 to 9. So in that case, you need to slow down so you'll go from pixel 3 -> 6½ -> 10.
      A bit tricky to explain like this, so I'm not sure if you understood =D.

    • @TompaA

      You can't get a higher speed than 64.
      Not sure what exactly you mean by your question though.

    • @blulere
      @blulere 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you clip into a block you gain 10% of max speed.

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't really gain any speed at all when clipping through a block, though you are pushed forward up to 2 pixels. Speed is the same, so you won't get an increase that you can keep.

    • @blulere
      @blulere 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tompa A and I also found out that you can maneuver faster by getting p speed, tapping left while holding b for one frame and jump while holding b.
      IF YOU TOUCH THE FLOOR YOU LOSE 1% OF YOUR SPEED. Be careful!
      PS: SMB3 has the weirdest one frame touches I'e ever seen. You can float (not really) by just jumping before Mario pops up from the ground slightly from block pushing.

      A TAS is a Tool Assisted Speedrun, meaning the player used slowdown, savestates, and frame advantage and used a TAS Imput to get specific frame by frame movements.

    Why does the game's clock countdown so erratically?

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The timer speed changes depending on how much the camera is scrolling horizontally. The more it scrolls, the slower the timer goes. That's why it's always running quite quickly at the start of a level, and then slows down as we build up P-speed. But stays the same in an autoscroller.
      I assume it's done like this to preserve memory somehow, but I actually don't know. I started looking into it more on a technical level awhile ago, but never finished to. So no clue =).

    Hello! this video is awesome. I learned about speed running a year ago and I have been really eager to try and get into Speed running. This is the game that I have been thinking about starting to learn to speed run. This video was so informative! and the comments were awesome and funny and i love when you would make beats along with the music.
    Question, Is there a preferred console version of this game to speed run?

    • @TompaA
      @TompaA  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eathan IsEpic The best is a US version for the NES. PAL versions run slower and the Japanese version has a lot of changes that make it slower.
      Some people use the Virtual Console for speedruns, but the frame rate is different, making it slower than the NES US version.
      And if you want to get into speedrunning this, I recommend checking the record times here: speedrun.com/smb3
