Excellent! Appreciate knowing the proper hip depth during stance = center of hip over ankle. This video helped me realize I was setting up with my hips too far back, so they little choice other than to creep forward. The center of hip over ankle feels like a much more neutral, natural stance.

I have known for a long time that for me, if I take a peek to the right before I pull the trigger, and reinforce a slight hesitation before moving my hips on the down swing, I always hit the ball much more solid and consistent. I could never fully understand why but it just worked. It feels really good that I now know why and I can’t believe how simple it really is. My swing thought at practice will now be holding the right, then replace with the left. This will prevent a slide, coming out of it, and keep me planted in posture for power and accuracy, every time. Where most people get into trouble is by trying to get power from early extension. Thanks

As usual spot on Eric !! Great point about the set up creating early extension later in the swing. The feeling of tucking the butt in is key - (see George Gankas vids re "sloppy set up". Watch Matt Wolff who sets up great.
So important not to stick the butt out backwards too much as it will do the opposite in the through swing and come forward resulting in early extension.Loving the JT input also.

Great video Eric! I've been trying to correct this problem for months (didn't know I even had it for decades). I've been trying tons of different drills. The 2 keys that have helped the most are presented in this video: hip depth and set up. Set up is huge! If your butt is back too far before you even begin your swing, it's going to be very difficult to keep it back and it won't remotely feel natural. If your set up is correct, it makes it a million times easier to establish and maintain hip depth during the swing. Another tip that's helped is not only trying to keep your right hip depth during transition, but try to push it back even farther via a slight squat. Out of all your early extension videos, this is your best. Thanks again!!!!

Right hip deeper and higher than the left is such a key to crisp, solid impact. I almost feel like my right hip reaches a point where it feels "cocked" and ready to fire in the downswing. It also stops swaying and gets my belt buckle in front of the ball at impact. I have become a striker, not a sweeper. I bet most non-pros are missing this ingredient. I was.

Eric - This is Jim. I probably missed this but to confirm.
In the backswing, the pressure into the right side should always feel to be in the INSIDE of the right foot??
Pressure INSIDE right foot to begin B/S with pressure transferring to INSIDE right heel at top.
You want to turn into your right side on B/S with pressure on the INSIDE of right foot throughout.

Great video, I'll try this when I have access to a range again. However I'm 6' 4", fairly long legs, average arms, and with the recommended setup I physically can't get to the ball, especially with a short iron. I have to add more hip tilt, which moves my centre of balance too far forward. I then have too push my butt back to compensate. Previously a 4hcp, so a fairly good ball striker, but significant early extension. When playing regularly short irons were definitely my Achilles heel. An iron from 200 was more likely to hit the green than from 120. Thanks for any feedback.

@@CogornoGolf Thanks for the reply. I've been using +1/2" and 2/3 upright, depending on the manufacturer, for about 30 years, but I guess these days it's much easier to get a standard swing weight with more additional length, especially now Callaway are adding weights to their premium irons. I know Mizuno offer two head weights to compensate. I was also looking at Adam Scott and notice he has a bit more knee bend, but keeps his hips over his heels, so I might try that too. Thanks again.

General observation... would be interesting to get your thoughts. On the swings you made in which you got your hip deep, the front of your head starts to back away from it's line in the backswing and even further in the downswing. I think this is becoming a more common pattern on tour. Justin Rose does it to some extent and Scott Piercy backs his head up a lot. Seems very challenging to get hips super deep while still keeping head on the wall. Nonetheless, your swing looks really good!

    • @CogornoGolf
      @CogornoGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you!
I definitely do that (more than I would like)....I just dont practice enough to change the pattern to be honest.
I would prefer the head to stay "on the wall".
I developed that in my swing a few years back when I trained it in on purpose with DRIVER to gain more speed (which worked well).
BUT with irons it can cause the occasional toe hit for me....as well as having to lengthen my trail arm a bit more than I would like (higher dynamic loft)

Early extension is a major problem for most players. My partner would always say that I lifted my head when I flubbed a shot, but now I realize this is early extension, not my head lifting. It seemed to me this year that when I early extended the feeling was my left shoulder going up too soon on the downswing. So I concentrated on keeping my left shoulder mostly down from the top of the downswing to left arm parallelm as I shifted my hips left and this seemed to really help make more solid contact. Thoughts?

      Hey Joe!
It will not FORCE, no. But will help.
