  • So I was in conversation with Paulla Keen an artist from the Netherlands about gel printing onto circles when I came up with the idea of gel printing onto coffee filters, these being a porous tissue that's resistant to water, I thought maybe the perfect alternative to expensive water resistant tissue papers for collage.

    I was thinking that if one needed a water resistant quality, spraying the finished product with a light coating of hairspray would set your finished product quite nicely.
    I enjoyed the gold daisy tissue one the very most. Thank you so much for the idea!

    Always fun to watch you gel print Ceri & a special one this time -- you are, on our behalf, a mixed media explorer who boldly goes where no man (or woman) has gone before :) Appreciate your desire to cover those of us for whom the Carnival tissue is cost prohibitive (have you seen Froyle's posts where she has a go at replicating expensive handmade papers by using pastes & gels?) And you're so right, gel printing is a blast and an ongoing revelation -- always something new :)

    I've been wanting to do some gel prints but my dyslexia makes it confusing for me to understand which order the paint, stencil and such go on. • @CeriGriffiths
      @CeriGriffiths  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CeriGriffiths That is what I normally do, I write the steps down until I get them memorized. Normally when I watch gel print videos, they go so fast and don't explain why they are doing what they did. I love the results but have no idea of how to do something even similar. You took your time, gave explanations and it was so helpful. I'm really glad I found your channel.

    Tips: DEFINITELY watch just a bit on color theory bc it helped me in mixing paints nicely on a gelli plate
    Try: pink, orange & yellow.... and separately that is, try green, blue and yellow. They all mix quite nicely bc they are close on the color wheel, no opposite.
    That was the best bit of homework I ever did, honestly, was to kinda go back to art class and learn a touch of color theory. It wasn't even a deep dive, honestly. But it helped MASSIVELY so what I create is cute and not mud

I have recently settled on your videos, having watched many, many others in the junk journal community, as the only ones (not to discredit the many others whom I have learned something from) but you have a mixed media “bent” that appeals to me and that I am eager to learn about. I also identify very well with your OCD, Anxiety, and the insecurities you sometimes discuss. I suffer from those things as well. Excellent video! I’m fascinated with gel printing and when I saw the thumbnail of your video pop up, I had to come take a look! I’ve collected coffee filters ever since I got into junk journaling (I also use them to cover the larger holes in the bottom of a pot when potting plants) so I have tons at the ready. Also, I’ve been using a Keurig for my coffee so I have tons left from my old machine lol. I’ve been really keen on trying projects with dryer sheets (used of course, after they come out of the dryer). These sheets have a unique texture and are pretty soft and pliable (and smell good too lol). My original plan was to use them to collage over a dried flower (to cover & protect the flower) but I wonder if they would work for gel printing?? Love those masks you used....esp the daisy one! TYFS!! New subbie here Michigan USA ❤️🦋💜

      Morning Cindy and welcome to my channel, I don’t used drier sheets but I don’t see why they wouldn’t work, the same could be done with used wet wipes I’m sure.

    Hi Ceri! For those of us with smaller gelli mats they sell smaller size coffee filters, 3-4 cups about 6.5" in diameter. I wonder if you have tried any of those you color died? It would give you a different base to start with.
    These prints are absolutely amazing! I love the new masks you purchased from P&M! I hope you have a great weekend!

      Thank you Laura I didn’t know the filters came in different sizes, the ones I dyed I used food colour and I’ve found if you drip water on them they leave white marks so not sure what effect that would have with acrylics.

      @@CeriGriffiths I wondered what you dyed them with. I have an entire package that were accidentally coffee dyed, the pot wasn't all the way on the maker...and the filters were sitting on the counter. I microwaved and air dried them.

    Great to have options for people who live out of the UK. Love the crescent mask on the coffee filter paper. So cool the way your mind can springboard to create cost saving techniques! By the way was that a Ceri original printed t-shirt that you had on?

    👍👍Great idea! This was such a fun play, Ceri! If it wasn't so early here, I'd go get a pile of coffee filters for a play, but I don't want to wake everyone up. I'm so curious how they will tear. The only thing I'd ever thought to do with these was coffee dye them. Somehow I missed out on Bob & will have to see how you created him.

    LOVE your junk journal graphic T--is it one of your own designs??? So cool--
    I've dyed loads of filters but now I'll have to add them to the gel plate toy box for sure--these turned out great! Can't wait to see how you put them in your work.

    Those coffee filters will make gorgeous backgrounds to make stamped labels. Almost like rice paper.

    Wow again! You could also put 2 gel plates aside by side, making 1 large one. I saw that seemingly obvious idea on ArtWhisper88

    Ceri, I just found your demo on my feed. Your process looks like fun way to use my acrylic paints & old coffee filters. Will this craft be good for any age group, like grammar or elementary schools kiddos?

    • @CeriGriffiths
      @CeriGriffiths  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mary the process would work for any age as long as supervised, as there are no sharp objects it should be safe. Paint could possibly be harmful if ingested so obviously that would need to be watched. Aprons would be a must. The trouble is that gel plates and brayers can be expensive, you may be able to do something similar with sheets of thick plastic, the paint could be spread or brushed on to the plastic then the paper laid over the top to pull the print. I’d say experiment and see what gives you similar results.

    Could I ask a repeat question? I asked before, but I cannot find the video where you answered me - could you tell me again the name of the 12x12 skinny boxes? I apologize for having to ask twice - I’m a scatter-brain lately.

      Not a problem, if you search for 12x12 scrapbooking storage boxes you should find them. Here in the UK they’re by a company called Westernboxes. Hope that helps.

    I put coffee filters on my gelli plate and did this too but I didn't do the whole wet then dry thing. They look fine and don't have folds etc.. it's like the getting with the paint and then drying in air ironed it out

    Wondering if this would work effectively on the foam head? I recall that P tore many if her tissue papers into small pieces. This fiber seems like it’s very pliable and would work well to glue onto the curved surfaces.

    • @CeriGriffiths
      @CeriGriffiths  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandy I’ve never tried this before but the filters are very pliable so I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t work, just have a try on something shaped, a box or something and if it works on that it should work on a head.
