I don’t always understand what the judges see, but I truly appreciate this artist’s talent. He sees things in the world that I do not and captures feelings on paper with pencil - things we all use all the time - but in such a way that reveal so much more. Despite the fact that these are drawings, they evoke so much emotion. I find myself so moved by them. He is truly something extraordinary, I think.
12:50 I love how the two artists converged … nearly cried. This is absolutely my favorite Portrait Artist of the Year. It was such an interesting connection between these two artists. And plus Carlos is so beautiful!
Me too!
I think the final commission was pretty special. It captured the movement, fluidity and excitement of the Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, and yet, in contrast ,a huge amount of serenity and peace creating an amazing sense of harmony in his drawing. A very worthy winner.
I agree, I was holding my breathe, but I really liked it . ❤
Looking at it, makes you think he is dreaming of dancing and you can see and feel the movement. Absolutely amazing.
Magnificent. The last time I saw movement expressed with emotion like this was a Toulouse-Lautrec. Amazing artist.
You never saw that
@@Ebilehita ???? At an exhibition in Milan...damn I right I did.
Degas as well as Leonardo.
@@toddaulner5393 Yes! Absolutely.
Clearly among the most interesting artists and sitters. bravo!
This fellow is a master, reminds me of Leonardo
This is the type of works that i am drawn to - that have a balance of details and impressionism
Risk taker. I love this because it makes you pause. If it were what a finished piece would look like. We would just glaze over it!
I ❤ this! So ethereal and airy. Its like a quick glow through the light. Love the details hidden in the lines, for the viewer to discover. Well done, Curtis! I loved how they developed a warm relationship too. In the unveiling, Carlos went for a hug but the Britishness of the potential recipiebts left him wanting. He is a warm hearted, kind Cuban, people! Give the man a hug if he goes for one ❤
Likely more a restriction of COVID which has impacted this entire series
@@user-uw1cs5bn6s You are right. I had almost forgotten about it (fortunately).
I've been following this lovely series for some time. What strikes me most, is the experience of building relationship around art. Two people who would never have met otherwise, connect so deeply with each other because of a (stunning) portrait. I like to think that Curtis and Carlos will long be friends now due to their many intersections!
Ballet dancers are uncharted more than their legs!!! They are PEOPLE and actors!! Even Carlos talked about how he puts his emotions into his dancing!!
I love Curtis’ style. He’s amazing ❤
This is the story of two souls recognizing and nurturing each other, leading to growth for both souls... A magical experience, even for us, viewers. Thank you both so much...
It reminds me of Rembrandt & da vinci pencil drawings!
I loved this program and the artists, their process and stories, the settings. Everything was perfect! The artist was perfect for this sitter, and the approach was unique. Thanks to the judges as well.
😢Carlos has strong powerful legs that allow him to soar as he dances. I could not make them out in this portrait. They are vital in his artistic expression. I make out head and hands and vague somethings ..The experts' comments were elusive fragments
FANTÁSTICO ! Técnica de desenho fora do habitual. Estão todos de parabéns ! 👏 Parabéns ao Carlos pela carreira espectacular que tem desenvolvido ! MUITO BOM 👏👏👏
Quite possibly the best episode in your series. Really focusing on spending time getting to know both the artist and his subject. outside of Curtis, being a phenomenally, gifted artist he seems to be a beautiful person himself. Thank you for sharing this with us..
Wow 🤩 What a fantastic artist!
absolutely beautiful. Tapped into the spiritual side!
It made me cry..so much the body and color tells
Such a unique talent ! The fabulous choice, Judges !!! Bravo!
FIFTY!!!
Positive pure living no doubt.
I thought he was about 30!!!🤯
Absolutely stunning. Magic!
So beautiful❤ i would love to travel to see it. Fantastic collaboration. Very unexpected❤❤
Absolutely stunning final drawing, and a fascinating journey along the way. Curtis isuch a lovely person, incredibly talented and modest, bringing a new dimension to drawing: the inveiling reduced me to tears of admiration.
this fellow has a promising career. i hope the museum reframed the drawing so it sat well with the others in the room
An ornate gold frame would greatly detract from the work, my opinion. The work itself is not like everything else, too, and that is refreshing.
@@sacrebleu1371 i agree. not ornate, but not white either. it makes it look very 1980s. a simple well proportioned gold or black frame. but that's just personal preference. the experts know what they are doing. it's just a little off to my eye.
exquisite, what any great piece of art work needs to be, it is, words cannot convey the great feeling in this work!!!!!!!! BRAVO
Curtis Holder. I remember gsitting in the airport in Cebu very depressed, then suddenly I see everything as passing, as fleeting. As something that comes out of the void to form a ghostly shape. i just love the way he draws. I’ll copy him. That being the best compliment to a creative artist when they influence others profoundly
What a special artist Curtis is. A special artist produced a magical piece of a special artist. Thank you
Curtis, the drawing can hold magic & energy that some forms of painting don't quite capture!! Well done..
Unreal talent. Definitely one of a kind he has developed a new kind of art
Totally blown away with this artist, the incredible dancer and the finished painting! Incredible!
thank you. a wonderful journey through his work.
actually their work.
Curtis’s work is wonderful beyond belief. The eyes alone of his Eddie Izzard are masterpieces, absolutely alive to a degree almost magical. What a talent!
Wondrous to behold. Imagine the final portrait surrounded by the quick sketches as one exhibition piece.
Absolutely stunning. So much work and yet very few sharp lines. I have to check out other pieces by the artist. Really amazing. Wow ! His other pieces are spectacular too. Way to go Curtis.
This has got to be my favourite winner and muse! Such different worlds yet so similar ! I can understand why they connect so well and that the finished piece is just stunning!
A fusion of two powerful energies morph into on extremely beautiful presence
Two magical beings come together to create a masterpiece.
✌️♥️☀️
Thank you so much for sharing.🌾
Beautiful!
unbelievable!
Wow, so original, love his style. ❤
Bravo! love the portrait and the amazing documentary detailing the relationship between these two men. Kindred spirits artistically, visually and spiritually.
Love that the judges and museum took a chance on a project done with pencil. The Art world can get so snooty about choice of materials and tools used. As an artist that uses and enjoys both pencil and digital…I get that lot.
I have many boxes of different brands and colors. Twenty first century modernization of tools offer pencils that come in so many textures and billions of colors. Any pre-20th century artist would have danced with joy using the myriad tools available to us now from the lowly pencil, spray paint, to high-tech computer and everything in between.
This documentary has provided me with tons of inspiration.
It's PERFECTION...❤
Stunning
I like it… it’s fleeting and gestural🤔🤗
Beautiful,, such soul in the translation to paper
Strangely, although I can clearly see the dreamer, I don't think that this is the best work shown by this artist in this competition. I love the technique, and the talent shines through between the lines with a charming result. Thankyou to both sitter and artist -
The piece is so emotional.
I was waiting for the finale! I mean sure, it's 7 am in the morning and can't sleep, so it comes in handy!
Oh my. It is awesome. It brought tears to my eyes it was so brilliant. You captured his essence his spirit his humanness. Oh my.
I wonder why I was expecting more!
I actually cried even if I'm just watching this on screen. How much more if this was in front of me irl
Bravo for both of you 👏🏻🫶🏼
I believe that this has been the most amazing Portrait Artist of the Year program I’ve had the privilege to enjoy…couldn’t believe how the time flew by. I actually checked the time feeling it was too short. Bravo! Absolutely a winner. Thank you for sharing these terrific programs. I look forward to each and every one!
Salamat po
Wonderful show, thank you.
amazing amazing amazing - thanks for posting
It appears like a preliminary sketch to a portrait.
Think that the likeness of the face could have been a tad more obvious, even thou I love his process👌
Reminds of Giacometti’s portraits.
Much appreciate you posting these videos, but I guess those of us in Canada can't watch the other episodes in this series??
I am in 🇩🇪 and I can see all the episodes. Check out the playlist in this channel. The series is fantastic!

When will come the wins episode too your show, thanks
Looks like the painting done by Mr bean hahaha
Not impressive.
😀
I sometimes wish the sensation about Dancers would include wearing appropriate or ANY Underwear while performing... 😑1.53
To each his own. I don't really "get" this artist's work; up until the last 5 minutes I was very concerned because none of the sketches seemed to be capturing anything of Carlos. I think the final portrait was "OK"; good in some parts, too messy in others, yet I really didn't think the likeness was there as much as it needed to be. I think the **IDEA** of the motion-portrait was good, but it just looks too unfinished for my taste. But congrats to Curtis & for sticking to his own style.
I missed the season. Just tuning into the final. Haven't seen the final commission yet. Yet, from the brief showing of his other works during the season, this seems like a lot of intellectual posturing and blather. I'll acknowlege that the artist does capture the essence of his subjects. And that counts for a lot. But his technique leaves a lot to be desired. Just a bunch of different color scratchy lines. Much easier to execute than other mediums. And he never gives us a complete portraiture. Just partial. Again, easier to complete than bothering to deal with an entire portrait. And now, I'll wait to finish watching the episode to give my final comments.....
OK, here goes! Just finished watching the episode. I'll start by saying I really do like the final piece. I enjoyed the process of watching the artist and subject develop together. Yet, the final piece STILL feels unfinished. I understand that is his particular style. Everything is intentional in his haphazard way. But I'm STILL left wanting more; a more developed, realized expression. From the brief showings of the other final studies he was working on at his studio I preferred those, especially the first one which showed two heads. Anyway, I think he's stopped midway in his process of evolving as an artist. I do see some attempt to stretch and try new methods and approaches in the final piece. Hopefully, he'll continue to evolve and his sketches won't continue looking like mere sketches, but more complete, fulfilling, finalized compositions that still do incorporate his uniquely "skethcy" approach . . .
He mispronounces Carlos. He says CarlAs.
The very first Acosta pose as Basilio from the ballet Don Quijote should have been at the center of the final choice.
That would have been a great standout. Acosta is a remarkable and famous Ballet Dancer.
This cheesy Acosta dreams on grass is a forgettable choice. Nobody will know who he is. He is defined by BALLET.
Personally... I don't like it
Do yourself a favor and just skip to 40:00 to see the "portrait" unveiling.
I really, really, really hope the producers choose new judges for next season.
Let's hope so!
lol, exactly what I did.
I couldn’t stomach watching the whole thing!
I have to say that I agree about having new judges: there must be others. It's like living in a one-party state, stultifying. Let someone else in: their comments and views are so predictable.
I’m disappointed 😕😳😣 in this show there are so many exceptional artists that get passed over 😔
New judges? I believe this will never happen 😂 . They keep coming back, same as Donald Trump … 🧟♀️
Like most visual art today….more talk than paint.
😂😂😂😂😂
I couldn't focus during this episode because both Curtis and Carlos are so gorgeous and sexy! :D Honestly, I liked Curtis' first attempt when he put the canvas up on the easel, but his final piece is really great too.
Holder’s a FABULOUS expressionist artists. This piece would not be my favorite. No movement in the bottom half of the portrait….random scribbling w/ imagery of flowers/leaves? Sorry. IMO.
Really??😂
Really underwhelming portrait, hardly there at all.
Looks like any 45 minute sketch at my local live portrait drawing sessions. Overrated for a finished piece, and why do we have to pretend.
Art critics like to pretend they know better than you, because they spent tons of money on their art degree, so they pretend a 1/4 finished piece of art is magical and wonderful, and if you don’t see that, it’s because you’re uneducated.
Real, skillful art is hard. These days we must praise the mediocre. For equity and all that.
I'm sorry but the portrait looks awkward. The expression on Carlos face painful. Like the artist work not this time. From so many sketches he picked the worst to work on.
How are you going to have an unveiling with masterpieces in the background setting the standards really high only to unvail an underwhelming colored pencil sketch LMAO!
This is so unappealing. Not beautiful, completely void of meaning and symbol.
Not impressed
Amateur art
Not at all impressive, expressive, or important.
What a joke
What a CRAP..!😅
