    Brian Wilson believed this was his finest vocal performance. He wrote it for the Ronettes because he was obsessed with their hit 'Be My Baby' but their manager Phil Spector (who was one of Brian's idols) rejected it because the Ronettes only performed songs that Phil wrote.

      I think it was Brian Wilson that had Ronnie Spector finally sing this song that was meant for her & they had this song as the background vocals, I think that’s the song they’re thinking about where The Beach Boys sang back up at the end of thos video

    Back in the early 60s when the Beach Boys came out, all their songs were about surfing, girls, and car drags. At that time gas was about 25 cents a gallon there were a lot of muscle cars throughout the 60s, early 70s. "Little Deuce Coupe", "Shut Down", and "409" are great examples of the Beach Boys singing about cars.

    • @RobertBreedon-c3b
      @RobertBreedon-c3b ปีที่แล้ว +5

      409 is great car song about one of the best muscle cars ever made . Plus there were other groups that sang about cars in the 60s Ronnie and the Daytonas and their song Little GTO. HEY LITTLE COBRA - The Rip Chords, Dead Man's Curve by Jan and Dean from 1963 . It was all about having a hot rod back in the late 50s and 60s up to about 73 when the gas shortages hit and Washington came out with their pollution controls they made the big three put on the motors killed the HP days.

      Little Douce Coupe was a 1932 Model 18 Ford with a flathead V8 under the hood. If you owned a Ford car or tractor with a flatty during WW2, you were out of luck if you needed parts after 1942 because Uncle Sam was buying them all for the war effort.

    • @ptournas
      @ptournas ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MarkCucchiara And to give a little more perspective, the national average gas price when this was written was 30¢. You got a little more than 4 gallons of gas for an hour's work. Today the minimum wage is 7.25 and the average U.S. gas price is $3.85 per gallon, so you get less than 2 gallons of gas for an hour's work. And nobody comes out to check your oil and wash your windows for free! 🙂

      I hear THAT! I am a model year 1954. (The economy model)..with 1 older brother and 4 older sisters (and 1 little brother ), I heard all of these songs new! Not to mention what Mom and Dad listened to. I often wondered how I never learned to play anything. Well, there was the family lack of musical talent. There was my older brother's legendary split Reed incident on the clarinet that panicked dogs across the Island We lived on. That was likely the problem 😕. I forgot to eat breakfast at all today. Was right on time for lunch though 😋👌!

I wish that I could have been around back then, these days, the music is foul, and disgusting. Back then, the music had heart and soul. Thank you for your post, it gives me just a tiny window into the world back then.

      @daviddragavon7555 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @shadsullivan7817 yea, but you get to explore. And do. That makes you cool 😎 as well. Another thing was exposure. Anything that wasn't country or old.fart "Standards" music, was in most cities, the same station.. Unless perhaps in LA or New York.
      No segregation on the radio, none knew if the band was white, black, Asian or Space Aliens. If the music was good, we heard it. I was a fan of: the Beatles, Cream, the 4 Tops and Marvon Gayr,.Aretha Franklin and Waylon Jennings, Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot , Dionne Warwick and the rolling Stones at the same time. Same Station..Oh, and Elvis! Good luck on your journey!

    Billy Joel tells a story about his then-15 year old daughter (she's all grown up now) coming home from a movie very emotional about a song in the movie. She asked her dad if he ever heard of this song. Billy just laughed and said "That's the Beach Boys - I opened for them in the early 70's". Alexa then exclaimed "I LOVE that song!". Now, on occasion, he'll tell that story on stage then do a cover of the song - for his daughter.

    There is a singer whom you haven't discovered yet. He was probably the most famous actor/singer to compete with Elvis to be the top teenage heartthrob in the mid 50's. His name was Ricky Nelson and he was already one of the most famous child actors from early television before Elvis first appeared. Beginning in 1952, when he was 12 years old he and his family, Ozzie, Harriet and brother David had one of the first real life family sitcoms in early tv, which lasted from 1952 until 1966. He had a beautiful face and every young girl had a crush on him. He began his singing career in 1957 and released some fantastic songs until his tragic plane crash when he was only 45 years old. Mostly rockabilly, here's just a few of his hits: "Traveling Man", "Poor Little Fool", "Garden Party", "It's Late", "Be-Bop Baby", "A Teenager's Romance" and more.

    "Help Me, Rhonda", "God Only Knows", "In My Room", "Darlin'", "I Get Around", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "Little Deuce Coupe", "Do It Again", "Little Surfer Girl", and their best song "Good Vibrations".

    Beach Boy Brian Wilson was inspired to write this after hearing (and loving) the Ronettes' "Be My Baby." The opening drumbeat echoes that of the earlier recording. Brian offered the song first to the Ronettes but their producer/songwriter Phil Spector turned it down, saying he preferred they not record material from the outside. Many years later (c, 1999) Ronnie Spector recorded the song as a solo artist and Brian Wilson was thrilled when he eventually heard it.

      You certainly had some great local harmony in The Hollies, and elsewhere with The Tremeloes, et al. Of course George Martin was a big Brian Wilson fan, and was likely pleased to hear The Beatles transition away from the skiffle/My Bonnie sound to harmonies of their own. That Beach Boys show must have come in happy days, what, four months after the World Cup.

    Beach Boys albums are like greatest hits albums, one great song after another. The Beach Boys are one of the greatest groups of all time, still in 2023. I saw them live several years ago in NYC for their 50th anniversary reunion tour, and was amazed how good they are live still! Just as good as then! Though they have help now. Anyway they are so influential and iconic. Many other groups have imitated them, even if for one song or part of a song. They also represent the end of American dominance before the Beatles started the British Invasion. But there was a rivalry between Brian Wilson and Lennon & McCartney, trying to outdo each other. Paul has cited one of the Beach Boys songs as the greatest song ever. Check out “Heroes & Villains” for the most mind blowing harmony and melodies you’ve ever heard. Also: In my room, Good vibrations, Barbara Ann (the extended version from the Party album), …

    Southern California in the early 60s was the hotbed of professional drag racing and the growing technology surrounding car racing, the Beach Boys were smart to use it as a new and original song hook. For more of their harmonies, try "In My Room." Or, speaking of the Beach Boys singing background vocals, how about combining them with one of your FAVORITE groups - CHICAGO, in Chicago's "Wishing You Were Here."

    The Beach Boys headlined the 4th largest festival in the world for a very long time. The Venetian Festival in St. Joe, Michigan was so cool to go. Millions of people on Lake Michigan. They stopped doing it around 20 years ago, but man it was a blast of you liked music. I think it had around 20 stages. As you entered, the first stage was just solo acts, and each stage got a little bigger. Any kind of music you could think of would be there, shows all day long all weekend long. I miss it.

Carol Kayne mostly on Bass, Tommy Tedesco and Glen Campbell on guitar, Leon Russell on Keys and many more. I see you've not yet heard 'Sloop John B' which was their granddaddy's Sloop. The beauty of their harmony and the reason for their great sound is multiple members giving you a greater depth and range of sound. You can do this because more members can each add more and different notes to the sound. The other band that does this is the Association with 5 members each singing to provide that wonderful sound. BTW, the Association's "Never My Love" is the second most requested song in the 20th century* next to the number 1 song, "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.

    I grew up in Los Angeles and was 11 going on 12 when this song was released in 1964. That Summer of '64 was all about little league baseball, going to The Boys Club in Hollywood to swim and do crafts and, of course, going to Santa Monica and Venice Beach to rent a board or go body surfing.
    The first two 45 RPMs I purchased with my own money were "Surfin' U.S.A." by said Beach Boys and "Do You Love Me" by The Contours. In September of 1964 I turned 12 and my father bought me my first electric bass guitar. About 17 years later, I found myself playing bass for Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys as a supporting member of the band that backed and toured with him when he wasn't touring with The Beach Boys. Carl passed away in 1998 but I will always treasure the time I was privileged to spend with him.
    "Don't Worry Baby" and "God Only Knows" are my two most favorites.
