One of the coolest parts of this show is seeing the depiction of a realistic atmosphere, straight out of Tanizaki's In Praise of Shadows. I feel like this might be the first Japanese period show I've seen that puts a lot of emphasis on the darkness of these spaces, lit only by fire and candlelight. Most Japanese-produced dramas are very unartfully lit, and every character is enveloped in high-key light that looks artificial and soap-opera-y. Films are slightly better but we still never get a true sense of darkness like we do in Shogun.
i agree with you. Period dramas from NHK (asa dora) are produced as a soap opera style while they maintain the essence of the warring state theme but yes, the lighting during their night scenes are a bit too much vs in this one
Do you really watch NHK's period dramas? The "Taiga Drama" that airs every Sunday at 20:00 for an hour has a different rating depending on the work, but on average, the visuals are not bad. The story of "Kirin ga Kuru" was better than this "Shogun". Morning 15-minute dramas (asa dora) are generally soap operas and are not considered period dramas.
This exact scene is when I realised the detail they went through to reach for the culture. Im not Japanese but I am indigenous and the producers are so right when they say its not just about the clothes or the language, its about the culture that makes us enjoy and live as we are. The detail to this show is amazing
The detail of this show is so well done . I think the crew behind Shōgun deserves a praise , because they create in my opinion , the best miniseries of 2024 .
Praise? No, they deserve a series of the most prestigious awards for representing an Asian country's culture so well and meticulously while simultaneously being a mainly-Western production.
My father had this archive where he kept most of his novel and James clavell. Shogun was among them,I used to spend nearly 4 hours reading them but couldn't understand their nature or even apprehend, as I grew older later on this movie shogun, I was amazed by the kind of input the director has put through, thanks a lot, I have learnt a lot with this experience.
Everything about Japan in that era was beautiful.... The culture, the clothing, the weapons, the furniture, the architecture, the gardens.... Everything was art.
I wish any of you interested in noh will go check it out when visiting Japan. It is not expensive yet most information is in Japanese so it can be hard to find!😅
I want to see the No performance again during the season 2 of Shogun, preferably near the climax of the story although I have the chance to see the No performance easily as I live near Tokyo.
there wont be season 2 since season 1 will end where the book end. They can adapt the next book but it would not be "season 2" since the stories are not connected and only merely in the same timeline/ universe.
Stories are told, Good Stories are told in Multitudes, Epics are sung and acted in Operas, Miniseries like SHÖGUN are raised to the level of Art.!
New version lacks- a genius loci, colours, music. Not speaking on deformed story. Cast can not be compared with a iconic, original 80 version. Pity. Hope that VG kids for whom is new series aimed, could find a way to Shogun Clavells book or audiobooks.
Watching this incredible art form gives us chills.
Thank you❣️
this show is really a love letter to Japanese culture, it's so interesting
I REALLY HOPE THEY WILL WIN THE EMMYS!!!! THIS SHOW REALLY DESERVES IT!
They will. This much work will not go unnoticed
Me too

Arguably one of the best miniseries i've even seen. It's up there with the likes of Band of Brothers and Chernobyl for me

@jool7793 why? knightfall was also good. now u just need zhaoyun or anything else iconic from the Wulin-esque, made by hollywood, if they dare.
As someone who majored in Asian Studies and took a class on Noh... absolutely loved seeing it so dutifully represented :)
The attention to detail on this series shows just how much everyone involved loves and cares about this project.
Toyotomi Hideyoshi is the only person who had a Noh play written based on his own achievements and actually performed it himself.

for the love of Shogun..why am I seeing Jiraiya(from Naruto) hahaha
We need more of these behind the scenes please thank you ❤
yes!! more more more!
This show is the best i have ever seen since True Detective Season 1
One exception in that period: Chernobyl
The authenticity of Shōgun continues to impress!

Manifesting Emmy awards for this series. 🙏
Such an amazing production, the lighting is done so well. Does a great job of drawing us into the world they've created.
Emmy’s next year
This September.
There are several Noh plays (shuramono) in which samurai are the main characters. All of them are excellent.
Incredible show. So thankful for it.

Why do you think japan is so hated all over Asia??? It is a brutal and violent culture .... UGLY in so many ways!!!
I wish any of you interested in noh will go check it out when visiting Japan. It is not expensive yet most information is in Japanese so it can be hard to find!😅
Love the Noh performances, incredible episode.
This production of Shogün is a masterpiece in so many ways! Congratulations
My grandparents had many masks on display in their house, and I was too scared to go near the room during dark hours😨
The costumes are dazzling, the performers are highly trained, and the stories are deep. The Ayakashi mask is foreboding! Domo Arigato
I hope that this will pave the way for authentic traditional culture to remain, which seems to be disappearing even in Japan.
Love the show's dedication to authenticity
It was best part of the episode
Masterpiece!
Masterpiece. Hope you make an adaptation of taiko and musashi by eiji yoshikawa.
It was so intense I half expected something violent to happen at any moment.
Japan is going to see an influx of tourists in the coming months.
They don´t like foreigners.
I'll be one of them!
They're already here. Some are being extremely obnoxious.
I read and saw somewhere that some spots are forbidden now for tourists because of that behavior
Gonna win an Oscar but i think it deserves more than that
You mean Emmy? Oscar are for movies, Emmy are for tv series
they could definitely cut this miniseries into a 3 hour epic movie! oscar guaranteed!
@jool7793 ok. not gonna do it then
How about several Emmy’s?
Shogun is without a doubt the entire Japanese culture in display, just marvelous!
Artfully made i have to rewatch this scene again
this was absolutely fantastic

What's the music in @1:50 ??? I couldn't find it anywhere on the soundtrack, must be a version of Sakura
Never before? Wasn't there a Noh scene in the Last Samurai?
Yeah, came here to say this. Like, did the guy watch any other famous Samurai movies before this? :p
ummm... it was more like Noh what Hollywood describes in The Last Samurai.
@@lisalisalisalisalisalisaliraliI feel like most people have forgotten about that movie.
The visuals of the scenes were amazing but I couldn't stop cracking up at the audio.
If Shogun doesn't win a minimum of 5 awards then Hollywood is full of sh@@!!!!!!
