Great video.👏 I was a matte painter on Shogun. Worked on Osaka, the Tenshu and the surrounding environment alongside some brilliant artists. It was an amazing project to work on and it's wonderful reading all the comments praising the work.
I think that the greatest testament to how much of a fantastic job you and your colleagues did was that I never got the sense that I was watching a VFX shot or a painted background. Not once. Only now, watching this feature, the rational part of my brain is going "oh right yeah they didn't have actual 17th-century Osaka to film".
This is honestly insane work, after watching 6 episode I knew that it couldn't possibly all be shot real, but I never expected this much to be CG, I genuinely couldn't tell
Tbf the "drone shots" of Osaka and the sea stuff was very clearly CGI, and maybe not the best. But I'm shocked how much of the other stuff is, most of it I really couldn't tell.
Thank you guys for giving your VFX team the credit they deserve. It's a mark of decency, in an environment where many of your peers in Hollywood prefer to lie and pretend their movies/shows don't use CG.
That's the thing about CGI, you don't notice it when it's good, but you notice it very well when it's flawed. With that said, things do seem to look the best when it's a good mix of both practical and CG.
@@TehIdiotOne This is the result you get with proper planning and sticking to one vision. As a VFX Compositor, directors will sometimes change things last minute and still want us to stick to the same deadline.
This level of craftsmanship for a show . The amount of hardwork and dedication required to achieve this scale is beyond me , I pour my heart and love to this show and it’s makers.❤
What's crazy is, I didn't once think about VFX while watching this show. It's so well-grounded that it didn't even occur to me to wonder which parts were green screened in.
I can see the fire on the arrows not being real, but the whole of all those arrows being shot from bows in relative close-ups being a complete visual effect is incredible. Never in a million years would i have thought that those bows werent just shooting real arrows safely to targets offscreen.
@@empireoflightzprobably so they can exactly control what final look will be for physical arrows, like not firing at same time, or in the right direction. With VFX they have exact control of what the arrows will look like
@@AeroGold1that seems a bit lazy considering the budget of this show, you could probably hire some archers and get some nice looking arrows, maybe just do the fire with VFX? Guess I'm always a supporter of doing things practical when possible like a Nolan or Villeneuve would do, but I suppose if the end result looks ok, which it *mostly* does on Shogun (but not always), then I'm ok with it.
@@empireoflightz Not lazy at all as VFX works is extremely expensive and time consuming. You can't shoot an arrow near a person, so a digital asset is going to be used either way, the reasons why one would replace it with digital assets is to have full control of the quantity and where they land, also for composition, maybe they shot a real arrow on a take but the lighting is incorrect.
@@empireoflightz I don't remember Nolan or Villeneuve movies ever having archers. When you launch an arrow, it has to go somewhere. If you can replace the arrows with digital effects, it makes more sense to do that then to have to close off part of your set so the arrows don't end up striking crew members. Digital effects are happening more and more for safety reasons. Chad Stahelski's John Wick movies pride themselves on practical stunts, but every single gun muzzle flash you see in any of the four Wick movies are digital effects added in post production because Chad doesn't allow old school blanks to be used on set. That's not lazy, that's just a former stunt guy using new technology to ensure greater safety for his crew and stunt teams.

VFX has been amazing. Ever since Forrest Gump, I've tried to pay attention to VFX used on "ordinary" scenes, not space ships or monster, but ordinary scenes. It's amazing what these artists do. And also to keep these actors safe!
The team did a fantastic job with the VFX. At no time during my viewing of this from episode 1 to 10 did I pause to wonder if certain things were CGI or real. Everything seemed real to me. That’s how good it was.
Wow. Unbelievable! The blood and gore reminds me of Kill Bill. Mad respect to the VFX Team for the incredible CGIs they made for this very remarkable series. If only they could show this on big screen, it will definitely be huge! It is like LOTR all over again! ❤🙌

I don't know what song it is exactly, but it reminds me a lot of Kojo No Tsuki and Sakura Sakura wich are two traditional popular Japanese songs, this little hummed tune is perhaps an original composition inspired by these songs.
The producers spared no expense on the lush costumes, sets and computer effects, BUT, I gotta ask, what were they thinking with the creepy blue coloured eye contact lenses used by the star of the show... you mean to say, there was not another handsome actor to be found, to play that part, who actually has blue eyes? (The strange blue contact lenses make the actor look like a vampire, and the soulless eyes are very distracting when trying to follow the story.)
