@@BlackCrowNavajo They only had themsleves to blame in the game against Holland by taking Causio off at half time and reverting to their negative ways to play for a draw. Bearzot was at fault for that.
Spare a thought for Dino Zoff. Two spectacular long-range shots beat him in this game, and in the next game against Brazil for third place play-off, Nelinho and Dirceu beat him again with two great long-range goals.
Holland of the 70's, such a great team ! Unlucky in 1974, unlucky in 1978. The Dutch team of 2010 never even got near the form of the 70's, but got closer to winning the world cup.
Great goal but wasn't it deviated by an Italian player? Plus the goal post, so a little luck didn't hurt. Interesting to see this Azzurri team, a demo version of '82. Missing Altobelli, Collovati, Graziani, and Conti, among others. Italy has more World Cup victories than Holland has finals; in fact, it has as many lost finals as Holland!
Italy was probably the strongest team of the tournament (even stronger than the team that won the cup in 1982 and sole to defeat Argentina) but failed because of a weak semifinal 2nd half. The crucial decision was the replacement of Causio by Sala, difficult to understand given Causio created hell lot of problems to dutch defense and went to the pause in good condition.
@ANC Nutrition it's not a matter of being a "great player" but about role and having the ball roll in the right place. Players like Conti in Italy 82 or Pirlo in Italy 2006. Causio was the playmaker in Italy 78 and Sala could not replace that role. This is possibly Bearzot biggest mistake.
