A base da seleção campeã de 82... temos a oportunidade de ver Roberto Bettega jogando (esse era uma fera, um craque, responsável direto pela classificação da Itália para essa copa)... o sensacional Franco Cáusio (na partida seguinte, jogou muito contra o Brasil)... o jovem Paolo Rossi (dispensa comentários, mas já aí, dando uma pequena demonstração do que viria pela frente, quatro anos depois, rsrs)... Dino Zoff (também, dispensa comentários)... enfim, todos... um dos melhores times que a Itália teve em todos os tempos, e... esse, um dos melhores, senão o melhor jogo dessa copa do mundo... no entanto, percebe-se aí, a queda de rendimento da Itália no segundo tempo, aconteceu o mesmo no jogo contra o Brasil... e isso, com certeza, eles aprimoraram para a copa seguinte... Agreed, Italy was very strong in the 1978 World Cup (having eliminated England in the qualifiers) though a touch fortunate against the beautiful French team of the time (Platini, Rocheteau, Six and Tresor), coming from behind to win 2-1. Had Italy progressed to the final, Argentina (their opponents) might, psychologically, have had greater cause for concern, the Azzuri already deserved winners against the hosts in an earlier group game. This match, incidentally (Italy - Netherlands), was not a semi-final as such, but a deciding group game, the format of the tournament being radically different to the unwieldy, elephantine competition of today.
Very rough match and unfortunately the poor state of the pitch is evident here. This was the only match played in sunshine at Monumental stadium as the rest were night matches or played in overcast weather, Buenos Aires having a more humid climate than the inland cities Córdoba, Mendoza and Rosario that receive little rain in winter. I still like the look of the Monumental stadium during that era and somehow prefer it to our modern times.

We played the best football. But we had many young players and we just ran out of gas against Holland who were a tough and experienced team.

È stato un risultato insperato e ingigantito oltre i meriti reali però quando si parla dell'Italia del 1978 resto dell'idea che sia stata la nostra Nazionale più bella anche se non ha vinto.
@@arianvanheisen644 il mondiale 1982 dopo una qualificazione sofferta regalerà un mondiale bellissimo con l'eliminazione di squadre come Argentina (campione uscente), il miglior Brasile di sempre o quasi (inferiore solo a quello del 1970), la fortissima Polonia (guarda il mondiale 1974 ad esempio) e la solita Germania Ovest. Se parlo con nostalgia di questi periodi è perché ho avuto la fortuna di vedere il calcio più bello.

To be fair in this game Arie Haan was a bit naughty on Zaccarrelli.
