This Italian Team was so strong and confident that the coach Bearzot used to replace the Playmaker Antognoni because of injury in the Final against Germany with 18 years young Bergomi who turned off Rummenigge and prepared with the Libero Scirea the 2nd goal by Tardelli. That says it all!

Actually only the midfield was great with Zico, Socrates and Falcao. the defense was suspect, and Serginho up front was awful.
@@coolgabe64Cerezo was very good in a different way, he made excellent runs off the ball to drag defenders away and create gaps for his team mates to run into. Zico didn't like playing right up and being tightly marked in this game but the other three were superb.
An unbalanced team that overplayed at times and the weaknesses were plain to see against Italy.
Watched this live and remember almost the whole fantastic game. What a goals, what a passion, expression... Ahh, classic, classic days

One of the greatest: Italy v Germany 1970, and Germany v. France 1982 were as exciting and entertaining as this one. In this game Italians were always one goal ahead, whereas in those 2 games the advance kept changing and thus made them more unpredictable.

from this highlights I surmise three things 1 the MVP's of this game was Rossi in second place but the Italian goal keeper was the true MVP (he kept Brazil from winning). 2 it seems that Brazil no defense at all, so many holes in their defense I wonder how come they didn't get any more goals, I guess because their attack power was so high. 3. Italy had a really strong team i was a two year old child when this was played so i don't remember it, my first WC that I remember watching form start to finish was Italy 90 WC. However i had always heard that Brazil 82 was one of Brazil best team ever probably behind Brazil 70. But this Brail looked very incomplete their defense was none exitance while their game was beautiful and really Italy was saved because of the Goal Keeper but Italy had a more complete team than Brazil. they weren't a creative and attacking power house as that Brazil team however they were balanced, they defended well, and capitalized in Brazils weakness their non existence defense.

Possibly the best football game I ever saw. For once, Italy put the immense talent of its footballers at play, instead of following moronic tactics. What an impressive match, at any moment you could feel things were going to happen. Brazil equalized twice and both times it seemed that they'd finally bag it... until Italy scored again.

What was moronic is the play style that Italy had been using through the 1970s (and in the previous matches of the 1982 World Cup). A style which stated that 0-0 was a perfect result because it meant that neither of the teams had made any mistake.
Magnificent teams and players. This Brazil was full of talent but it hadn't defense and goalkeeper. Mundial 1982 and 1986 were the best ever watched.

Thank you for posting. It looks great. This is one of those woeld cup games that will always be remembered. The Brazilian team was amazing but it sure had some flaws. Their number 9 couldnt score if his life depended on it and one or two of the defenders were very passive. Then, the Italian team was all ready to beat anyone. Around that time the best league was the Italian and the games were really close so you had to score every time you had a chance, well... this team did just that. I really like this Italian team because they beat Argentina which was the World Champion, Brazil with Zico and then Germany on the final. I think people dont realise how good this Italian team was, my guess is that they could beat any other world champion in history.

Loved the Brazil team of '82 as did many millions. In this match however, Italy came out and played like champions-to-be after a sluggish start in the initial group stage and showed up some of Brazil's defensive weaknesses. Brazil missed some good chances to score more, but Rossi was on fire in this match and Italy went on to win the tournament handsomely.
The game that resulted in Brazil changing their style forever. Football lost that day.

You obviously didn't watch Brazil in 1974 and 1978 then. They were very European in '78. In '74 they were the most defensive and cynical side at that tournament.
The Santana ethos was still in place at the '86 tournament. Brazil played excellent attacking football, especially against Poland and France.

@@jsg9892 Looking back on it, Brazil in 1982 were not really a team - only a brilliant midfield - probably the best in World Cup history. To emphasise the point, in this match, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked. Of their four midfielders - Cerezo, Socrates, Zico and Falcao - Zico clearly did not like playing right up and being tightly marked by Gentile and little was seen of him. The other three though were quite superb and Brazil went out paying real old-fashioned football.
