soapy bubble trick only works on pressure leaks, not vacuum leaks. Most often with EFI, the ISCM or electronic throttle will compensate for idle speed and you won't hear a jump in idle speed when hitting a leaky spot with propane or flammable spray, or water... but if you watch the short term fuel trim with your handy bluedriver (tm) unit, you can definitely see the trims spike. Here's a feature suggestion, how about incorporating a "beep" tone to the app when fuel trims spike to the negative, to help in this situation...
Excellent video. Been having a lean condition part throttle bank 1 issue P2177. Smoke tested it, isolated the evap and pcv systems, fuel trims not coming down after that, and have 21 in-hg at idle before and after disconnecting the evap and pcv and blocking the ports at the intake. Down to either a small intake gasket leak below the plenum, exhaust leak, or fuel injectors (hope not - DI on an M276 engine).
MEMO TO SELF: First, I am a retired federal safety officer. I see an issue in this video that is very common among most people who own fire extinguishers. The fire extinguisher is placed in the engine bay area. What is the problem? If a fire breaks out IN THE ENGINE BAY, you will have to reach INTO the fire to access the fire extinguisher. BIG problem. Set your fire extinguisher 5’-10’ away from fire potentials. You will still have immediate access to the extinguisher…and keep the hair on your arm. 👍
Great video but really wish you guys would make a video about LTFT and STFT using live data. There's a few videos (on TH-cam) out there that don't even require popping the hood to diagnose a problem.
Thanks guys, thats really a very Informative video. However i did also learn in the Techschool that the defective EVAP valve or EGR valve can cause lean Conditions and therefore false Fueltrims.
Great job guys it was so great that you explained it so good nice and slow great job that's the best view I've ever seen I'm a mechanic but I work on semis not too much on the smaller stuff so great job 👍 thank you! Bill,
Great video guys. Been tracking a P1126 lean bank 2 on my Porsche Boxster. Haven’t found anything off yet. So hard to find. Final check will be exhaust. Also the Brake Booster check valve can cause a leak condition as well and easy enough to check. Thanks for the great videos!
Excellent video. Would be good to hone in also on why if just ONE bank. This is my situation. I solved all the air intake leaks etc. But still getting random/pending P0174: Bank 2. Thanks!
One thing they didn’t mention was the fuel pressure regulator. If it’s stuck open more gas will return to the gas tank and less pressure will be in the rail under load. The fuel pressure might be okay at idle but once put under load there might not be enough pressure to keep the engine going.
Thank you guys for this great video 👍 . My 1986 Toyota van runs really good on any speed and it also starts right away with no problemo , But sometimes it sputters when I accelerate of a stop , Can a bad fuel pump check vale cause a car to sputter on accelerating ? 🤔
its funny that you guys are doing this on an f150 i have the same style year truck and having been chasing an issue of highly negative short term fuel trims for months but i have no codes associated with it. when i stomp the throttle the truck sputters almost enough that it is about to cut off but then 2-3 seconds after that the engine gets all of its power. do you guys have any thoughts?
When I make a simple observation, the spark plug was absent from the reasoning. The spark plug gives direction to the topic in terms of fuel injectors. The injector does not overcome the air, and the spark plug is almost clean and different from the rest.
As your tank gets hot pressure inside is supposed to escape charcoal canister then to purge valve then to intake. Take note if this pressure builds after 30 minutes driving your car might start bogging. Reversed pressure sends fuel from injectors back to tank. Lean...lol
Hi, thanks for this educative video.i have a similar problem where the engine is running lean but when I unplugged the 02 sensor,it ran fine.So I replaced the sensor and the engine ran fine for a dey.the next day ,it begins to run lean.i have not been able to find a leak.thanks for any help from you
I bought aftermarket EGR from Amazon it came with 3 gaskets but I used one and today I sprayed carb spray by the egr and the engine changed. I was wondering should I have used all 3 gaskets,? My engine is stalling and rpm won't stay in sweet spot
I have been using the Blue driver for over a year. I am issues with my 2016 Nissan Altima and the things that are happening should be contradicting what kind of codes that i am getting. Also is there a code that says if a cat converter is bad?
Hey DallasPilotCar! We have a option in our app to send us a support email, if you go to the more tab and tap contact us then select the email option. You can type out what the issues you are seeing are and if you scan your Altima first we will get a log of what is going on behind the scene's a little. The log will auto attach when you use the email option in app.
I’ve had this code (P0171) in my 2006 Camry since I bought it. 280k miles. This is the only code that ever gets tripped and then BlueDriver says this is the only code confirmed. My live data shows the LTFT on Bank 1 being high at idle and then smoothing out some while driving. STFT on Bank 1 being very close to and sometimes at 0% while idling then higher while driving. Something else I found suspicious was the live data showing the Absolute Throttle Postion being high. It reads at 16% or so at idle then jumps all the way up to 27% while driving and fluctuates between those two numbers while driving. I’ve replaced the MAF sensor, engine air filter, fuel filter and fuel pump. What could it be? This car has had some exhaust system work done to it previously I was told but it does not have any other codes nor does it make excess noise. What does the absolute throttle position sensor being high indicate and what ultimately is causing my lean condition? Please help if possible. I’d like to fix it because that’s the only thing wrong with this car’s system right now and it runs and rides great otherwise.
How does ethanol affect ECM/PCM fuel trim calculations? Does it require the same 14.7:1 ratio calculations or some other ratio? If so does the ECM/PCM sense whether the fuel is ethanol or gasoline and use a different ratio for ethanol? If the ECM/PCM assume gasoline is used and does not adjust for the use of ethanol what is the impact on air/fuel calculations and fuel trim outputs? How does this affect scanner outputs, rich, lean, etc.? Is there a YT video that addresses these questions? Bottomline: How does the ECM/PCM adjust for these two different fuel types with different optimum air/fuel ratios, or does it not, and what are the impacts on scanner readings and diagnosis? Again, is there a YT video that addresses these questions?
I looked into mine and it's saying Lane fuel not enough fuel getting to the system itsfunneh are and all the other stuff so the injectors not put in enough fuel in it right
Excellent!! The best, most thorough diagnostic video I've ever viewed! Professionally complete and thorough - without all the BS... Awesome!
Amen
Love how detailed these guys are
This is awesome. I found this channel through a link created by my BlueDriver scanner. This product and service far exceeded my expectations.
I purchased this tool in 2020, the best money I have ever spent on diagnostics. Always within my reach, it has saved many friends and family members.
Finally, something highly educational with no bs! Thanks😉

Just fixed the check engine light on my Mazda 6 by replacing the MAF! Awesome video!
This was amazing! Thank you both. Best I’ve seen. Please continue on this path in life😁
Best tutorial on lean & fuel trims and other issues on YTube 👍🤷🏼♂️👍

I was hoping he was gonna spray the fire extinguisher around the hoses to check for leaks 😂😂😂😂
I thought that’s what they were gonna do.😂
We all did 😂😂😂
Me too 😂
Very good explanation of how to test the system

Thank you for pointing that out! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
Bluedriver is just the best diagnostic tool.
I was able to find the crack in my hose with the soap water! Nice!

Great video.!! No guessing working hands on problem solving great !
Another great informative video from you guys !! Thanks again !!!
Thank you for the great information!
Is it possible to have a lean condition on both banks if I have a leaky valve cover gasket on just one bank ?
Brilliant video guys👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻

currently see a P013B Lean to Rich (Bank 1 Sensor 2) code on my 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R
Glad I got this blue driver I’m pretty impressed with this and the help that comes with it thanx
What causes lean condition on both banks? I have P0171 and P0174 on my 07 tundra. I recently had my fuel pump replaced as well.
Yes..my exhaust flange is leaking causing a rich condition with my ltft in the 15-19%. I have a p1175 code.
Do a thorough video on live data. Chris fix style quality.
Chris - It almost looks like someone cut it with a knife
Jordan - 🔪🗡
Probably his baby momma lol
Very nice video understood everything very professional I am subscribing right now
Thank you guys for this great video 👍 . My 1986 Toyota van runs really good on any speed and it also starts right away with no problemo , But sometimes it sputters when I accelerate of a stop , Can a bad fuel pump check vale cause a car to sputter on accelerating ? 🤔
Thank you for the awesome video, you guys are the great instructors. I learned a lot from this video.
What does after the throttle body mean in the vacuume gauge section? Towards the engine or away? Does the pcv valve line count?
Great video! Time to push my Blue driver to the next level

Smoke machine finds vac leaks fast and EXACT where. No fire extinguisher needed. 120$ for a smoker.
^^^yup, and if you don’t got 120$ then just light a cigar and blow it into a vacuum hose, the old school way
Can you make a video how to check traction control all system because I have slip mark on the dashboard 😅 couldn’t figure how to check it
Absolutely excellent video 👌👌
So wait, if the long term fuel trim is within that 9 range, what problem does that rule out?
While driving my short-term fuel trim jumps up randomly to like 12-19 but overall it stays pretty steady +-3. Do you know what might cause that?
does it happen when the engine is under load or when you let off the gas pedal?
@@GrandmasMallCrawler what if it goes up when you lift off the gas?
Great Video - Thanks

Keep diagnosing videos coming
A bad 02 sensor can cause a lean condition right? And cause the fuel trim to be +
I bought aftermarket EGR from Amazon it came with 3 gaskets but I used one and today I sprayed carb spray by the egr and the engine changed. I was wondering should I have used all 3 gaskets,? My engine is stalling and rpm won't stay in sweet spot
These guys are the best
Very professional thank you.
what an awesome video thank you so much
Live data quit working on my Blue Driver. Had to buy a more expensive scan tool.
THANK YOU WOW GREAT JOB GUYS
Good video!
This is a great video guys

Could a bad knock sensor cause a vacuum leak? (I have a Miata)
is 6.8% long term fuel trim bank good?
Yes, always remember to keep trims no greater than -10 or 10.

“Oh wow I don’t know how we missed that it almost looks like someone cut it with a knife!!” They definitely cut it before the video lol.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks so much, very helpful! What if the vehicle has a MAP sensor instead. Tx again.
You guys are great
you can fix 20 problems in cars if you watch this video great jop guys and thinks 👍
Done did all that, mine isn't a leak, there isn't a shop on earth that can fix mine
Great video
Kinda liked the Motorcraft battery in the Chevy. Lol
🤫
when checking air mass flow sensor, when unplugged what if the engine stops??
I want to know to !
Bad maf sensor
Excellent 🚘
Fantastic
Thank you
Awesome
This video was so much help!!!! Thank you!
I unhooked the sensor while it was running and it shut off.
Apparently that means it’s working perfectly

You should show where your connecting you gauges
It's remarkable how now days we have to tell people not to touch a hot exhaust..🤣
Wow great video
Need you're help guy's
Using E5 petrol this can occur.
I can hear the vacuum leak on the video.
if that's a 5.4 it needs a timing chain
Damn yall bad ass
Or just read the data and you will see if it’s a lien or not
The bigger guy sounds like Dolph lundgren
Jordan needs to do voice over work. His voice is so smooth.
Told it was a low circuit, not a leak
Sounds like you have a lot more then a vacuumed leak
They seem so bored 😂
Before wasting time update your plugs and wires..
That thing has bigger problem s then a vacuum leak
We do use each vehicle for more then one video so they do usually have more then just one problem yes!
Maritimes accent
Bet they cut it with a knife..
Baby momma must have cut it Lol'
I looked into mine and it's saying Lane fuel not enough fuel getting to the system itsfunneh are and all the other stuff so the injectors not put in enough fuel in it right
Yeah the 2017 or newer will pop the code up saying hey there's a vacuum leak on top of your lean fuel condition
The 2017 Dodge Durango doesn't have a mass air flow sensor has a temperature air flow sensor
