Good job there. I was asking what would cause a vvti engine to have hard start. No trouble code stored. Fuel pressure is reading at 40000psi. Please help
I have been chasing the po171 and po 325 knock sensor code. The vehicle i am restoring is a 98 Nissan altima GXE. I had a po440 and a po 1138 i believe. I replaced the evap hose's. And that fixed the evap codes. I am now tracking down the massive vacuum leak. The short term fuel trim is + 20 to 25 percent. The long term is and stays about 10 percent. I changed the 02 sensors map and maf sensors. The fuel trims on the road is totally normal indicating a vacuum leak. I changed those sensors as maintainance because of the car age. The PCV and intake bellows are next suspects. This was a good video.
I’d leave the catalytic converter alone as the efficiency code could be due to the lean conditions 🤔 Have the customer drive it and if it returns, then replace the cat.
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair could you of tested the cat by doing a, back pressure gage test, hooked to the upstream O2? if its under 2 lbs at idle it should be fine.. s

K diagnostic thanks for such an informative cool video, you are truly a professional tech with excellent diagnostic skills, my years in automotive as a SAE certified tech back in the day was filled with learning as much as possible so I could be the best tech possible just like you, another way to check for vacuum leaks due to lean running is to use propane gas around the engine as it's running, when you hit the spot where the leak is the engine will Rev up high as long as you keep the propane gas in that spot, we used to do that in the 80's to find vacuum leaks. Love the Video and your expertise, much respect
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair just remembered something else, the EGR Valve is only suppose to open during open throttle and when cruising but at idle it's suppose to close so it doesn't make the car run too lean, but the symptoms would be that the car runs fine when cruising but would shut off at idle cause the EGR valve would stay stuck open and lean out fuel system at idle...don't know if that's a problem with the cars nowadays with all the new technology and computer controls
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair I had my nephews 2007 corolla towed home, I scanned it and got this same lean code , I found no vacuum leak but I took 3 spark plugs out and found the plug tips soaked with oil and combustion chamber has oil in it on 3 cylinders, 4th cylinder and plug is dry, didn't do compression test yet but what could it be?..the combustion chamber suppose to be sealed so how can oil soak tip of plugs and get into chamber? Rings? Head gasket? If it's real bad he's just gonna get a new car but I just wanted your expertise on this.
Thanks for your video. Obviously there was a vacuum leak at the PCV hose connector. I also think there are additional problems. I would put a fuel pressure gauge to monitor fuel pressure a idle and at load. In addition. a fuel injector "drop test" to monitor for clogged fuel injectors. My concern was as you increased RPMs past idle, the positive LT FT started increasing. Also , the MAF sensor seemed Skewed a little in the positive direction, as mentioned at idle with a 1.8 L engine MAF should read ~ 1.8 G/s. Also, I would recommend an oil change to the customer since the high fuel trims may have fuel to the engine oil. Once again thanks for your video.
FAUSTO GONZALEZ Thanks for your input!! There was no need to check all of those components since the fuel trim numbers got better after fixing the vacuum leak at the PCV tube, I like the idea of doing an oil change afterwards!!

I have a permanent p0420 code and pending/history p0171 code. Car is v6, Bank 1 Sensor 2 is behaving closely to Sensor 1. Sensor 1 was replaced, sensor 2 was not. Could the downstream o2 be the issue? Or is it the catalytic converter?
good videos, congratulations, engineer... a question, if I have a problem with the injectors, do the MAF sensor values go up or down? because I have a toyota corolla with that same code and with the scanner the maf sensor has a reading of 1,620 gm/s in realenti

@rayp.454 Pumping the Brake pedal at idle on a vehicle that has a vacuum operated brake booster will create a vacuum leak in the intake, which will affect the 02 sensor reading, since there is atmospheric pressure / Air on the other side of the brake booster!
I have a 04 camery i got that p0l71 code but not the catalytic converter 420 code mine say could be vacuum leak or inlet hose loose. if i fix those 2 problems will check engine fo out please help🙏🏾 thanks 😊

What are the signs and symptoms of this code P0171- system too lean (bank 1)? What will be the likely problem or issue with the vehicle with this code? Thanks. Great tutorial ❤❤❤
This was a simple method, with clear explanations of your rationale behind every step. Thanks for uploading. It gave confidence that the issue I'm facing with my truck is a vacuum leak. I'm about to make a DIY smoke machine and trace the problem spot.
K you did an excellent job...my car has the same error minus the P420(the cat was replaced a year ago) The PO171 is something new I hope once I clean the MAF, That ista a simple vacuum leak that can fix!! Thank you
The Smoke Test really helps a lot, the basic and simple way of trouble shooting the problem accurately. rather that spending parts while doing trial and error. It really helps alot in saving money. Thanks alot.
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair it can take SEVERAL DRIVING CLYCLES to clear the code. I have code p0171 lean bank 1 & P0171 lean bank 1 pending also right now. On a Scion tC 2006 MAF, air filter and oxygen sensor replaced (needed to be done anyways). My reading for my 02 sensor (Bank 1) reads at Volt output 0.740 to 8.00(v) My 02b1s1 says n/a? I know it's suppose to show as AF for Toyotas but didnt see that one at all. my EQ_RATB1S1 read at 1.002 with rpm at 2800-3000. My shorttf1 after warm up in idle 2.6 longft1 is 32.1 Rpm 2800-300 shortft1 moves -3.9 to 1.6 Longft1 stays at about 24% I cant tell if there is a vac leak, 02 is bad, fuel injectors/spark plugs bad or fuel pump. From my readings I cant tell what they mean... vac leak, fuel pump or 02 sensor Any advice? Side note the last 2 days just started with idle issue, hesitant when I press on the gas pedal. My throttle reads at 18% which is where I believe it should be.
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair Oh real quick to I changed the MAF sensor 4 days ago not oem an auto zone brand. the next time I started my car and drove after I put the new one in is when I noticed idle issues and gas pedal hesitation after being stop.I know Scion (Toyotas) are sensitive to non dealer parts. That was one of the many codes on my 2003 Chevy Express 3500 LT. Had a permanent MISFIRE also for years. Just wrapping up an reman engine swap that i got from AutoZone and discovered some bolts on both my exhaust manifolds were broken clean off and there was lots of carbon residue on the sides of the engine. I'm assuming i was sucking air at this point. Before this discovery I changed spark plugs, plug wires, ignition coils and O2 sensors to no avail. Even did a live scan one time and one of the O2 sensors were pulling 0.015 v. Oh. The engine never went into closed loop. EVER. I'm a driveway mechanic so i learn a lot of things the hard way. Thank you for your video, you Kind Man. SUBSCRIBED!
i watch your video again to understand lean condition pumping brake vacuum booster at idle how you creating unmeter air one side of diaframe is atmosfering pressure and other is vacuum from engine and check valve pumping the brake you compressing vacuum in to engine and then sucking vacuum back how those it work can you explane please thanks
Paul Foldes there is atmospheric pressure in the other side of the brake booster, when pumping the brake pedal while the engine is idling unmetered air leaks into the vacuum chamber through the push rod and eventually into the intake manifold which causes a lean condition
Thanks for the simple explanation without using unnecessary and confusing terminology. You were a big help with diagnostic info I can look for using my equipment. Keep up the Great work ! 🎉
What could be the cause of a P0171 on a 2016 Jeep Patriot Latitude 2.0 we just replaced the MAP sensor but the vehicle still has a rough idle and the rpms run high while driving on the freeway approximately 65-70 mph the rpms are jumping up to 2200-2700 rpms. What could cause that? My husband already checked for vacuum leaks and says he can't find any obvious leaks. We just replaced the map sensor thinking that would fix it but it didn't so I'm thinking it could possibly be a bad Throttle Body w/Actuator IAC Idle Air Control or a TPS Position Sensor or even possibly a upstream 02 sensor. If anyone else can give me some advice on what I should fix next I would greatly appreciate it thank you!

@505fastlife6 there is vacuum on one side of the brake booster and atmospheric pressure on the other side, when you pump the brake pedal you allow air to enter the vacuum side which causes a lean condition!

Thank you so much for this detailed video. I have a toyota prius 2007 that recently triggered this code (System too lean bank 1), but I'm unsure if it's related to a vacuum leak. I mainly saw mention in my code reader - Air Induction system, injector blockage, and mass air flow meter. I'm getting a STFT B1(%) of -2.3, LTFT B1(%) 33.6 at engine rpm of 3922 with Vehicle speed of 75. The numbers should be much lower at that speed right? What's odd is that I didn't exactly see a serious drop in fuel economy, it actually got better after I changed out my brakes, 35 -> 39 mph. I was thinking of trying to first add fuel injector oil into my gas tank to see if that would be a easy fix. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I have a on again, off again P0296 code. Is this similar to a 0171 code? Engine runs fine, no noticeable issues
@kalani1987 Yes!
My friend ever since I changed injectors po171 coming car power much better pick up much faster

Good job there. I was asking what would cause a vvti engine to have hard start. No trouble code stored. Fuel pressure is reading at 40000psi. Please help
@patrickndungu2775 partially clogged injectors! I recommend you take it to a pro mechanic who can diagnose it for you!
@michaelhoward4020 Thank you! Good luck with your project!
I’d leave the catalytic converter alone as the efficiency code could be due to the lean conditions 🤔
Have the customer drive it and if it returns, then replace the cat.

TheMrchris1234 My Pleasure! and thank you for sharing the propane method of finding a vacuum lean!
@@TheMrchris1234 Yeah! Thanks for sharing!

Deo, can you explain how pumping the brake pedal changes O2 sensor readings please? Thanks for the great video.
@rayp.454 Pumping the Brake pedal at idle on a vehicle that has a vacuum operated brake booster will create a vacuum leak in the intake, which will affect the 02 sensor reading, since there is atmospheric pressure / Air on the other side of the brake booster!

it can take SEVERAL DRIVING CLYCLES to clear the code.
If you would have cleared the Code, and then started the Vehicle; it may have yielded more information- such as if the code was Actually Cleared or if the Engine Light would have Reappeared with the code.

I have code p0171 lean bank 1 & P0171 lean bank 1 pending also right now. On a Scion tC 2006
MAF, air filter and oxygen sensor replaced (needed to be done anyways).
My shorttf1 after warm up in idle 2.6 longft1 is 32.1
Rpm 2800-300 shortft1 moves -3.9 to 1.6 Longft1 stays at about 24%
I cant tell if there is a vac leak, 02 is bad, fuel injectors/spark plugs bad or fuel pump. From my readings I cant tell what they mean... vac leak, fuel pump or 02 sensor Any advice?
Side note the last 2 days just started with idle issue, hesitant when I press on the gas pedal. My throttle reads at 18% which is where I believe it should be.

EVER.

Paul Foldes there is atmospheric pressure in the other side of the brake booster, when pumping the brake pedal while the engine is idling unmetered air leaks into the vacuum chamber through the push rod and eventually into the intake manifold which causes a lean condition

B Ch your LTFT % is high, if that number doesn't change regardless of engine speed then you might have a fuel delivery problem!
