The beautiful part of this song is that there is not a single bad tough about "the other guy", he doesn't want nothing bad for him. He just want to be (like) him.

I love E's music. Its a shame I just discovered his music recently but I'm so thankful that I got to listen to this artist now. Most of his songs has familiarity on me. Its like it came from some movie I could relate to. And also his music has 'The Beatles' vibes. E has been through a lot and it makes me cry listening to his music especially the ones depicting depression. I hope he lives and find more things in life that will truely make him happy.

This is a devastating feeling, knowing your loved one is in love with someone else and still you are happy because she's happy and you don't wish nothing bad for both of then. "If I could be that guy, instead of me" states the feeling of wishing to be like him but not to replace him. I remembered this song because a little time ago I lost my crush to someone else. Some people -like myself- are just made to suffer.

This must be the saddest song I've listened so far. It really translates the feeling of completely giving up on yourself for someone, to the point of wishing to be someone else.
I saw them perform this at Brixton Academy last September and I was totally mesmerized. The emotion and deepness of this song just grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Genuinely brought a tear to my eye. How E keeps doing it is truly remarkable.
I discovered this song right after I opened to my crush (probably my biggest). Well she refused me but said "I love your friendship so let's not cut the contact between us." After this words, my love for her just got worse. I loved her more than I've loved her before. Unfortunately, it's like impossible for us to be together. When I listen to this song I always think about her and wonder what could have happened... And it makes me cry. Beril if you see this, (you probably won't) I love you.

Such a HUGE improvement on "Le coup de Soleil" by Richard Cocciante, which was probably a massive hit back in the day. But Eels have totally hammered it with their beautifully balanced version, soft and deep. Thanks for making a crappy 70s song into something timeless 🙏
