The song is deeper than just an Englishman in a foreign place it's about feeling out of place in general and being different but the message is to be yourself no matter what as is sung in the end of this song just beautiful
It is important to notice that this song is about Quentin Crisp (who is the guy that appears on the clip !). He was an English gay icon who emigrated to the United States in 1981. During the war, he was declared exempted because he was gay ; in the US he was occasionally attacked by people for his sexual orientation, but he never seemed to fight back. The song gains deepness when you realize that

@@nikotakai8796 idk about deeper but it's basically just saying a gentleman will have enough control of his emotions to walk away from a provocation from an enemy but will never run away from the conflict.
After the war in the Balkans, my parents and I found ourselves homeless in a foreign country, sleeping in the back of a truck and just trying to survive. It was during that time, as a child, that I first heard this song, and it instantly connected with me. It captured everything I felt in that moment-lost, confused, and most importantly like I didn’t belong. And even now, more than 30 years later, that feeling hasn’t left me, as I still feel like a stranger. Today, my life is very different. I have a PhD, a wife, two kids, and a comfortable life. But no matter how much has changed, I still find comfort in the little things that tie me to my past-like eating Bosnian burek once a month or visiting my hometown once a year. And then, every time I return here, the same feeling returns... I’ve realized that no matter how much time passes or how much I accomplish in this country, there will always be a part of me that feels like I’m caught between two worlds. And this songs captures is so good... Thank you Sting.
The elderly English gent in the video was Quentin Crisp, who suffered a lot of ignorance and was victimized, but never vengeful, only polite. He was an openly gay man, and the author of The Naked Civil Servant, among other books; he was often reviled and persecuted as a young man, and he moved to NYC for his older years. I worked for his literary agent and had the pleasure of meeting him once and talking with him on the phone many times.
I suffered bullying for 7 years and this song accompanied me. I repeated to myself before going to school be yourself no matter what they said. They are really wise and strong words that you have to reach a very low point in your life to understand. if I did that in front of my enemies. when I could but I followed the advice of this song I ignored their comments and passed by them smiling like a true gentleman THANK YOU STING
I wish that pop musicians could bring back this style. Not that we don't like music today but, I can listen to this alot more without getting tired of it.
I know exactly what you mean. A lot of the stuff that comes out is processed to death and just rubbish in my ears and/or is more about an artist's image than sound. Some music is definitely decent but I don't think this type of musicality that was abundant in the charts from the 60s till the 90s will have a resurgence in the foreseeable future...
The fact that it took this long for a label like Frontiers Records to step up and actually bring back some classic rock/pop back to the West proves that the industry is permanently crippled. Music has been homogenized and cheapened to hell and back, and the general consumers have simply lapped it up without any regard for musicianship. It's just a crowd mentality that sadly persists to this very day. Very disheartening.
Music now involves tons and tons of marketing, as was discovered in the 80's or maybe even before. Cyndi Lauper had one great PR machine behind her for the time, but she also put out great music. Now, all you need is a great PR machine to succeed which is why shitty rap artists are a dime a dozen. They all make use of the "G.O.A.T." mentality to make themselves known. And the general consensus for music nowadays is that people think it's processed shit, they just don't bother to broaden their horizons and *seek out* music rather than let it fall into their lap. Crowd mentality will never get old, and good musicians must know how to work that crowd to their advantage, just like how punk rock became a lifestyle. And music is evolving, going through a shitty phase. I look forward to music in the future.
+SuperCruiser72 You must have such broad horizons if you think that all music is terrible these days. Try looking for music you like instead of complaining about what's marketed to you.
Mid-September 1994. I'm on a business trip in the Moscow region town of Troitsk. The young radio station "Europa Plus" played this song every day. I'm 23, my whole life is ahead of me... Nostalgia.
Soy Mexicano, obviamente no hablo Italiano, ésta canción me da la sensación de melancolía, soledad y olvido, pero a la vez siento que es una hermosa canción. Saludos cordiales desde Iztapalapa Ciudad de México.
Crazy! I heard this song on a beach last summer for the first time! Can you beleive it! I fell for it immediatly! You can hear all the sounds of NYC and feel it's tolerance. And then, I read the story of the authentic English gentleman in NYC. That man has inspiring life story for all of us who feel different from the rest of the crowd. Thank you Sting for leaving the endless mark of that man.
Oh my goodness, I'm sad you went this long in life without hearing this song! Hope you heard something special in it like the rest of us did. Please listen to the rest of the album if you haven't already, it's fucking transcendent.
Thank you for pointing this out. I strongly relate to this song, especially to being a "legal alien". Even though I feel like a "legal alien" in this world, not only NY. 😂
My parents took me to see Sting in concert at the end of the 80s. I was maybe 8. When he sand this song, the lights, the crowd, the beauty of his voice... Unforgettable.
Wasn't born in the 80s (I know it wasn't the best time), but man it would've been nice to go to a Sting concert around that time. His music's + The Police is just so good
I've seen Sting on stage only once.. in his production of The Last Ship a musical he wrote, directed and starred in, a few years ago. Very interesting and impressive, but I would love to have seen/heard him in his younger years.
I remember listening to this song when I used to live in Finland. All my friends had it memorized and would ask me what he meant with each line. And all I could think was... "I only remember the chorus" :) but after a year of people asking i had the whole song down. Such a good song.
I've memorised this one before I learned English, about 20 years ago. I don't listen music a lot, but Stings songs I always love to hear, because they are real, like listening to his soul singing... Don't think Sting will ever read this, but THANK YOU Gordon for "being your self, no matter what they say"! You are 70 already! I hope you will stay with us as much as you want, but time is relentless and "It takes a man" to understand this right - when you go on, know that this world will miss you so much ... God bless you!

Cool. What's your first language. I am revising my French. I can't seem to remember any German from school. Spanish is quite close to English. Also, Italian. But, those are the Latin languages perhaps. German seems quite different. 🤪🤓 It's a proud language perhaps?
Great way to learn English. I forgot. I was supposed to be looking for. French, Spanish. Italian. Songs, also Russian maybe. Portuguese. Maybe just French and English. I am no Superman.
@@pup1008 yes, but we are still sore about WOrld War 1 and 2 here in England. I am xenophobic. I fear foreigners. Particularly Germanic people. Not really bad racism. Just wary of that culture. So it's likely. I did not pay much attention in German class. Guten Morgan. Guten Tag Hola! Bein Nuit. Like in English: pardon in French: Pardon? But, in German the words are quite different from English. Due to the Roman Empire, I thought. Where The Goths, invaded Italy, from the North. Destroying the Roman Empire. As with The British Empire. We were dogged by The Germans, maybe fighting for their dinner. I only met 3 or 4 Germans in my whole life. But there's loads of Polish here in England. I am interested to listen to foreign media. I enjoyed watching Despacio. The Spanish song. It's a fun way to become familiar with a foreign language. Can you recommend any foreign media in German and Spanish?
In the late '80s, when the Soviet Union was cracking at the seams, music came rushing through those cracks. Western music. And amidst this polyphony, I discovered Sting, Billy Joel, Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel, and many others. You listen to music, look at Sting of the 80s and realize that life is as fleeting as an Englishman's walk in New York City
They just don't make music like this anymore. I'm only 18 but I can remember my parents playing sting when I was a child and thank god! Because now I appreciate good music!
Çisem Usta, don't feel sorry. My parents listen to shitty music, but I managed to listen to good one like this. Kids these days can pretty much be autodidact, they can find good music to listen all by themselves.
But people teach them shitty music as good music. They don't have too many options to choose in that way. I mean, I saw lots of people who think Lovefool is JB's song, not The Cardigans...
I agree with Jurek009. "Love Me" is not JB's song either. It was originally written by Natalie Burke, if I remember correctly and it was used in the sims 2 game. Nobody told me that. I found out all by myself. The conclusion is you don't have to listen to the shitty music people teach you to!

My english teacher played this song in class and we worked about it. I wanted to share what she told us "Sting dedicated his song ''Englishman in New York'' to Quentin Crisp. You can see him in the song video clip. In late 1986 Sting visited Crisp in his apartment and was told over dinner - and the next three days - what life had been like for a homosexual man in the largely homophobic Great Britain of the 1920s to the 1960s. Sting was both shocked and fascinated and decided to write this song. It includes the lines: It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile, Be yourself no matter what they say." It makes me feel safe to know this fact
It is indeed. I saw him Mr Crisp when I was standing outside a sentry box at the Tower of London, 1975?, doffed his cap, of all things. Unique and unmistakable character.

My favorite line of all time.
Yeah, a much needed thought these dark days...
Chris Tucker right ?
th-cam.com/video/CixcfHj4LRk/w-d-xo.html
Chris Tucker what about a woman?
Now you stand tall with your head held high, with dignity and hopefully feeling better
You know who the song is about right & what he suffered in his life? The guy is actually in the film.

And the lyrics is wonderful too! I join your wishes.
>>>>>>>"Not that we don't like music today..."
Speak for yourself ONLY. I stopped listening to music years ago because it stinks.
+SuperCruiser72 You must have such broad horizons if you think that all music is terrible these days. Try looking for music you like instead of complaining about what's marketed to you.

Çisem Usta Bull. There are plenty of options. You have the internet, therefore no excuse not to explore different artists.

I wanted to share what she told us
"Sting dedicated his song ''Englishman in New York'' to Quentin Crisp.
It includes the lines: It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile, Be yourself no matter what they say."
