I think a few video ago I said something along the lines of, “this guy makes 50 fear look easy, and I haven’t even beaten 32 fear.” Well uhh, the first part is true I just now have beaten 32 fear… the luck I got was absolutely insane.

Beat both 32 fears after watching you, the Heph boons were a game changer. I definitely slept on Heph before watching your high fear clears.

    Oooooh, strap in, folks!
    Trivia for Descura:
The first examples of sorcery in Ancient Greece come from Homer's descriptions of Circe in the Odyssey, where she is seen using a magic wand to conduct her power. Odysseus resists her magic using a secret herb, Moly, which is revealed to him by Hermes. Moly's status as a rare magical herb that is revealed to our heroes by their divine patrons is carried over in the game, where Selune will point it out to you on the first level of Erebus. In the Odyssey, Moly was used as a kind of anti-magic, allowing Odysseus to resist Circe's magic and overpower her using his soldier's training, a rare case of Odysseus using his brawn to win a confrontation. Athena and Hermes, meanwhile, also use magic wands, with Athena using a wand to disguise Odysseus as an elderly beggar and then to reveal his true form and Hermes using his wand to make people fall asleep and wake up again. In the Odyssey these wands are actually referred to as 'rods', which to me evokes a scepter more than a Harry Potter esque stick-shaped wand.
Indeed, Hermes carries his iconic Caduceus, a winged staff with two serpents coiling around it, in most depictions of the God, although the snakes are only carvings on the staff and not living creatures in his artwork here in Hades. Hermes is perhaps the most predominant god of witchcraft and magic in history, with his form Hermes Trismegitus that combines Hermes with the Egyptian God Thoth (also depicted using a staff, this one called an 'ankh') surviving from Ancient Greece to the Middle Ages into the Renaissance and still being used in terminology and iconography to this day. A range of eclectic writings attributed to him but likely written by numerous authors termed the 'Hermetica', or writings of Hermes, became the basis for many alchemical practices in the Middle Ages. Indeed, the term 'Hermetically sealed', still used in chemistry today, describes the practice of sealing a flask such that it no longer contains oxygen within, something that was originally thought to be a step to create the Philosopher's stone. In this case Hermes' magic staff was a symbol of his magical power not just as a divine being but also a learned sorcerer who could conduct magic rituals using his secret knowledge. To this day, some apothecaries and pharmacies use the Caduceus as a symbol or logo referencing Hermes' association with chemistry and the production of chemicals (including medicine) through alchemy, although some are also referencing a different staff sometimes confused with the Caduceus.
When I think of magic staves in Greek Mythology, I think of the Rod of Asclepius, which was a staff gifted to a son of Apollo who became a hero in Ancient Greece not through warfare or monster-slaying but through healing. Apollo, being god of sickness and disease, was also the god of cures and medicines, and he reared his son in the ways of classical learning before sending him to Chiron to train him further. He showed most promise in medicine, so Chiron taught him the medical arts, but it was through listening to the words of a divine serpent that came to him in his sleep that Asclepius learned many of his most potent medical skills. He carried this serpent with him coiled about on a staff, listening to its prognoses and applying them to mortals. So skilled was he at medicine that he cured his own aging and began raising the mortal population so high that Zeus had to kill him to prevent Earth from overpopulating. He was then placed in the heavens, and his staff continues to be a symbol used by medical organizations around the world to this very day, though as mentioned before often conflated with the Caduceus since they both have serpents. If you ever see a health organization or hospital with a staff with wings on it and coils around it, they're referencing Asclepius and his healing staff. The first version of the Hippocratic Oath even asks Apollo and Asclepius to bless your ability to do medicine.
Dionysus also had a magic staff, the Thyrsus, which was a bough of a tree wrapped in ivy and wine leaves with a hidden iron point at its tip. In more modern depictions, it instead has the head of a pine cone, but in both cases the Thyrsus was used as a magic staff that could inflict a kind of wild madness on those touched by its point that was commonly associated with Dionysus' followers the Bacchae. Followers of Dionysus' cult of hedonism and mad revelry would carry a Thyrsus both as a symbol of their power and a weapon against the opponents their debauchery, as depicted in the play The Bacchae by Euripides. In this play, Dio's cultists enact a coup on the King of Thebes for killing Dionysus' mortal mother, slowly transforming the city from an established civilization to a den of madness and euphoric revelry. Dio himself would give the Thyrsus as a boon to the newly converted within the play, and in the famous play Faust by Christopher Marlowe Doctor Faustus is given a Thrysus with which to perform witchcraft by the demon he summons, Mephistopheles.
For its part, Hades II interprets every divine rod from Circe to Hermes to Dionysus be a staff rather than a wand (presumably because it's harder to bonk Whispers and Gloom-Spillers over the head with a little wooden twig). To their credit this also goes back to Hades I, where Dio and Hermes both have long staffs rather than short wands. Whatever the case, in the Hades lore all wands seem to be staffs, with only Hecate using her iconic torches instead. Mel is never described in Greek myth as using a magic staff, instead being depicted using magic words and incantations over staffs, wands or torches. However, one of the only surviving depictions of Mel shows her on a bronze tablet found in a magician's kit from the third century in Pergamon, which also contained a magic nail made of bronze that can be interpreted as a kind of wand. In addition, the tablet itself has three other goddesses all holding torches and magic items associated with staves themselves, so it's hardly a stretch to say Mel could have used a staff. For the games' part, it depicts her staff as having the symbol of the crescent moon associated with Hecate, suggesting her take on Descura is steeped in her teachings from Hecate rather than being entirely sourced from her own magic and powers.
