You shouldve mentioned that taking shops is almost always the best option in a speedrun. They arent a bonus room, they replace a room that wouldve had enemies, so not having to fight makes the shop the faster choice. You would only not take it if the other option was a fountain room or something.
But there's no fountains in a Fresh File speedrun besides the 4 at the ends of the area. You only unlock a fountain in the first 3 areas after purchasing that at home (and those rooms aren't marked anyway, if memory serves).

The Doom effect is a reference to the "Sword of Damocles" story. Love this game. Fun facts 1 and 2, taking the boss routes in Styx is generally faster, since those areas stop spawning new enemies once you kill the boss, whereas the normal ones will just spawn continuous waves until they’re done. Also, when hades does his first 3 laser version of that attack, you can just dash through him and smack him from the other side. He can turn around, but it’s real slow so you’ll be fine. Also IMO Athena special is not the best in the game in its entirety. Usually it depends on your build, and Athena usually isn’t in the running. Probably the best for this speedrun though. At least the first iterations. The more you play the game, the more you go for big damage numbers rather than safety
On sword, Athena special is typically the correct choice since Merciful End is the defacto speed build in Fresh File, and even in AnyHeat it's one of the primary options. It's also one of the top damage specials in the game, only being eclipsed by Aphro and Demeter for the most part. In Fresh File in particular it offers an absurd level of safety and weaves in to combos to deflect things on timings, which is a primary DPS method alongside the actual damage the special itself provides.
You can also save time by just dashing around the lesser 3-lasers attack and hitting him from behind, I thought it was odd he waited that out but he knew to hug dad at least
Hades is SOOOO much fun to speed run but it is definitely difficult. Honestly surprised you did fresh file, since it’s not a very popular category. I prefer just the normal speedrun
One of the primary reasons it's not as popular is just due to how different the play style is compared to the max file game play. A lot of people get into it from casual play and then use their files for AnyHeat, whereas Fresh File is different enough in muscle memory to basically be it's own game once you get to the upper ends of speed, since you have to play a razor thin line for DPS and it's a rather brutal grind for the build RNG. Even with that though, I personally have 2k+ attempts in the category and it still is the most rewarding time on the leaderboards that I have. A lot of us that are on the more hard-core fresh file side have played since early access.
In my opinion ares and artemis are the best combo for rushing through boss fights, especially since ares' charge attack makes you invulnerable while dealing damage as well, but his strat for athena and ares makes sense given that you usually recieve more athena boons on your first play through. I also don't speedrun but play the game a ton so Speezy might've gotten the strat from another speedrunner and it might actually have better chances of being a successful run.
You mean the god he calls upon in the second phase? He always picks one you do not have. Iirc he also has a default one if you have all the gods (only possible with mods) and I think that is Artemis.
@@ThePheenixKing. was it a bug that he used Demeter for the first three times I fought him even though I never even met Demeter yet? I beat it super quick since it was a new save where I was obviously a lot better than my first playthrough and I feel like it bugged out a lot of things.
He picks from the pool of God's you've not seen. Not the pool of gods you've picked. It's possible to see all gods if you use keepsakes, and then he can pick a god who's boon you have.
Most of the time I watch you play games I've never played and a lot I've never even heard of. But I love Hades and because I love it and enjoy your content I decided it was going to be the first game I was going to learn to speed run (any percent mostly now, but I've dabbled in fresh file). Knowing what you're doing makes the videos even more stressful and more enjoyable. XP
I was super excited when I saw this game. I've been playing this a lot and it's one of my favorites. I love using all of Athena's move, they really help a lot. Still can't believe you did this first try.
Fresh File, is pain, nice job! I recommend to other people to start off with normal any% speedruns because it's easier to start improving your time instead of just practicing beating it, but both can be fun.
I think what you've not quite explained (or if so, I missed it) the important part about your dash (and getting a second dash in later runs) is that the only invincibility frames you get are actually during the dash. But that is the only thing that kept me from freshfile runs, it's so damn hard compared to anything else :D
For 13:27 I'd suggest taking sure footing instead since it can't be pommed and that means you have a greater chance of pomming the doom later. Also if I were in your position I wouldn't be bothering with the yarn since you have every boon you could need (I'd also consider selling any useless boons for better pom chances).
Yeah likewise for anyone reading, I would have not taken brilliant riposte to unlock the Legendary for the exact reason he explains later (he missed out on the duo the first time because of it). He got really, really lucky this run to get both, it could have easily never showed up. (Not to take away from anything - luck is a huge part of this game and a good speedrun worth showing off implies you finally good luck - after trying a thousand times. in other words, good luck means a ton of work to finally get it and to know how to actually make use of it)
Man I love this game, picked it up expecting to play for about two hours instead it pulled me in for an all nighter. Also first game I was really invested in the story of.
Funny enough , Theseus calling on Dionysis is actually the best thing ever ,cuz if u just stand still , those poison clouds will never hit u , just around u .
I rather like how Zagreus' skills are those which have been mastered by his father. It shows how much there is to learn, while also reaffirming that you can succeed with the gifts that you've been given, especially when they get honed to perfection.
Agreed it's very cool, down to Hades' cast which is like a stronger version of Zag's default bloodstones - including the damage buff and hanging around on the ground. When you fight him with his own spear it's nearly identical. Especially if you try to fight him with no Olympian boons (which he will even comment on, since he usually mocks you for using their help)
As someone that has been speedrunning this game for a couple of months now, I really enjoyed the video! Fresh file runs are something I've wanted to get into, but just haven't dedicated enough time to. Btw, if you haven't played Hades, do yourself a favor and go download it because this game is amazing.
“Hug your dad” is definitely intentional. When you max out Hades with the pact of punishment, that attack adds a part that repulses you if you try to get close and sends you into the beams (ask how I found out)
I thought so too. It would mean Theseus called a different god but that's not really worth worrying about. He can't call Demeter at that point at least, thank the gods
Not really the speedrunner type of person- but I've put myself to the fresh file challenge recently. EXTREMELY difficult but something you make look like a walk in the park. Kudos man
This is pretty much the first time watching a video like this where I can nod along to all the stuff you're saying because I actually have relevant experience. Hades is such a great game. Personally, I've been on and off attempting Fresh File runs myself, but on Hell Mode, so I've delved pretty deep into the specifics of how this type of challenge goes. Mind you, I've only made it up to the third boss fight in my best run, but it's a very enjoyable challenge. ...so what I'm saying is, you should do it again on Hell Mode-
Pretty sure every aspect shows up as legendary once you upgrade it to max. The different aspects for spear are Zagreus (the starting one), Achilles, Hades, and Guan Yu.
My fav type of buffs for speedrunning Hades is Poseidon+Dionis+Aphrodite/Hermes buffs combined in diff ways that gives Zagreus splash waves for aoe, movement speed for… speed and poison type buffs for killing enemies faster. Unfortunately, I couldn’t speedrun the last floor and I’m no speedrunner whatsoever, but this was fun to play. Also no mouse, only keyboard spamming ground attack with sword on
As an accomplished Hades speedrunner (pretty sure I can describe myself that way) most people aren't going to realise how difficult a Hades FF run is. The dad fight alone sucks. GG Speezy.
22:43 if he's not doing the full circle, he has a max tracking speed. You can go to his side, damage, and then before that sides laser hits, dash to the other side. He'll continue to track you, but he has to switch sides since he tracks the center beam. You can also just stay behind him but since you're on merciful end with Athena dash, you want to be dash attacking over and over and it's easier to side switch him vs camp his back if you're spamming dash attack.
Clearing this game in a single fresh file attempt is seriously difficult. Like, I've had a few attempts even after playing for hundreds of hours and the best I think I've done has been in like 5 runs. Not having that extra dash or any death defiances makes things downright nasty. WP!
Such a good speedrun. only thing I think could be improved is when Hades uses his big laser beam attack there's actually a small amount of space between him and the spears that shoot the laser and if you can dash close enough to him to be between him and the spears you can get free hits off on him the entre time he's shooting the lasers. Which with your doom and deflect special at almost 300 would be almost 1200 free damage every time he uses the laser throughout the entire fight. Also maybe trying to find an Artemis boon for her critical chance on all damage. Just a suggestion though, so far the fastest I've been able to get out is 14 attempts from a fresh file at around 35 minutes. And a pretty good run at 14:05 after fully upgrading my abilities and weapon of choice (aspect of Demeter) But after watching this I'm definitely heading home after Christmas and trying a first attempt run.
A lot of the legendaries are easy to miss for a long time, especially if you don't know what the prereq is. Probably you just never had an interest in brilliant riposte so you never had it actually become available
I figured out that’s if you get a Dionysus greater call boon you can stack it with damage and it deals a crazy amount of damage, like it would maybe half the time of bosses or even better.
Yeah his call boon is top, it might even be the best one or at least tied with Zeus. It's only really good if you _don't_ take his other core boons because you can end up overwriting the hangover with much lesser damage hangover. BUT you can't get calls in fresh file, it takes a few runs to unlock those.
thank you for posting this video I would not have known I could get up close to Hades during the final boss fight and you will help me beat him very very first time after over 60 runs thank you
Im a former top 1 speedrunner for any regular any%, and fresh file is definitely not a joke. Nice job on beating it (please praise me and notice my praise on you and you should feel privileged to recieve my acknowledgement)
two things I didn’t see mentioned that should be mentioned if you’re gonna speedrun this game - it’s OK to reset early (if you don’t have at least the prerequisites for your build by around the end of Tartarus for example) but you need to die to actually reset, since the game preserves the RNG seed if you quit. the second thing is you should try to learn the timings of your enemy waves and aim to be at the door when the last guy dies, instead of spending a few seconds every room to run to the door. also get comfortable pause buffering to read room rewards and have fun throwing away good attempts because of Satyr Sack RNG!
A little late to the party but congrats !! Another viable, yet not-as-good option for the first run clear is Drunken attack + Curse of Vengeance (Ares revenge passive) for the Curse of Nausea duo, that way you can still keep the utility of Athena special. I have a screenshot with that combo at 26 min clear IGT.
I love seeing you speedrun roguelikes, as they are very diffcult to master. I suggest that you try speedrunning Slay the Spire next, which is a totally different roguelike, yet it would be interesting to see how you would apporach it
The fact that his final time was slower than the time you need for the fully leveled Tight Deadline is ridiculous. Goes to show how hard that challenge is
I just cleared the game for first time on PS4 on my 15th attempt ( I've done it on Xbox, PS5 and Switch also) with Twin Fists and I absolutely obliterated everyone with the build I had. Didn't lose any death defiance (had 3) and only lost half of my life against Hades. It was such an adrenaline rush and one of the best feelings I've had in gaming. I think I did it in less than 2l30 mins but I haven't opened the admin room to check.
Yeah, Hades has a few "ultimate fallbacks". If you cannot be offered anything from boons, you'll get replacements, if you can't get anything from poms, you'll get gold, and if you can't be offered anything as a room reward, you'll get food. From what I remember, there are only two ways you can get food as a room reward, and both of them are in First Run in Asphodel - the room with the stairs, and the room with 3 exits right next to each other. Because you can't get Nectar as a room reward in First Run (you can still get it from Premium Vintage), you can only get Darkness or Key. If you enter a room with blue laurels (meta progression) with 3 exits, the game needs something to provide for the third door, so it falls back to food.
@@Museus7 Ah okay makes sense. Yeah I knew about the boon reward fallback (thx Haelian) but I did not consider that there is something like that for room rewards.
0:15 NO NO NO At first the reason to leave was not to meet his mother, cause back then he thought that nix was his mother and nix lives in the underworld with him, he wanted to leave because he was tired of the underworld and his father. he wanted to meet his other relatives on mount Olympus.
Uh... No. When the game begins, at it's first run, he had already read his father documents, found Persefone's letter, and got a spoiler from the narrator that she is his mother. Yes, we see this cutscene in-game, but it is when he SLEEPS, and it is written right there that it was a flashback. The "getting out of there to go to Olympus" was always a cover story for the olympians.
My first playthrough of this game, I got all the way to the final Hades phase, and ended up taking a laser to the face and dying. It was heartbreaking :( Buuut then I just beat it next round with the roguelite meta upgrades and it didn't feel as bad (though I admit it feels a lil disappointing to think that I needed the meta upgrades to beat it).
When I first reached the Hades boss, I was low on health and he took my single death defiance, but then I got him down without taking anymore damage. I was grinning thinking I beat him, then to my horror he healed for his second phase, which turned my grin into a frown.

Fresh file is very challenging. Huge congrats on the clear + thanks for plugging the guide I wrote!
gotta admit, I saw the art alot before, never knew it was a game though, pretty sick
This is one of the most entertaining games I’ve ever played. Came for the difficulty and incredible art, stayed for the wonderful story.
I never realized that Theseus had different specials for the solo phase, I always got the Zeus attacks
@@aspenisthebest nah I think it chooses one randomly from the ones you do not have in that run. So it was probably just coincidence.
XP
THIS IS MY FAVORITE VIDEO GAME THANK YOU FOR FEATURING IT! I watch your videos all the time my heart just exploded with joy to see this upload!
God I love Hades and watching Hades Speedruns. This is the game I would most likely consider speedrunning.
Also first game I was really invested in the story of.
nice pfp
He didn't thank the Shade....run invalid
The luck is insane.
I have so many hours on this game and never beat it. The fact you did it first run is wild to me. Damn these old man reflexes
i cant go beyond the third boss
8:03 48 hours gametime and i never had food as encounter
As someone that has been speedrunning this game for a couple of months now, I really enjoyed the video! Fresh file runs are something I've wanted to get into, but just haven't dedicated enough time to.
Btw, if you haven't played Hades, do yourself a favor and go download it because this game is amazing.
Love seeing you play this. It's one of my favorite video games.
“Hug your dad” is definitely intentional. When you max out Hades with the pact of punishment, that attack adds a part that repulses you if you try to get close and sends you into the beams (ask how I found out)
artemis for elysium mid boss was the right choice, rare or epic pressure points really elevates your dps, especially with merciful end
I thought so too. It would mean Theseus called a different god but that's not really worth worrying about. He can't call Demeter at that point at least, thank the gods
An EazySpeezy video AND my favourite game of all time? I must be getting real lucky today!
Not really the speedrunner type of person- but I've put myself to the fresh file challenge recently. EXTREMELY difficult but something you make look like a walk in the park. Kudos man
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH THANK YOU FOR PLAYING PLEASE SPEEDRUN THE SEQUEL WHEN IT COMES OUT
I really have no idea what is happening on my screen
This is pretty much the first time watching a video like this where I can nod along to all the stuff you're saying because I actually have relevant experience. Hades is such a great game. Personally, I've been on and off attempting Fresh File runs myself, but on Hell Mode, so I've delved pretty deep into the specifics of how this type of challenge goes. Mind you, I've only made it up to the third boss fight in my best run, but it's a very enjoyable challenge.
...so what I'm saying is, you should do it again on Hell Mode-
My best time on a ordinary run (not a new file run) is 22minutes i think and it was definetly with the spear with the legendary aspect
Pretty sure every aspect shows up as legendary once you upgrade it to max. The different aspects for spear are Zagreus (the starting one), Achilles, Hades, and Guan Yu.
Hades is a masterpiece! Having so much fun playing the game on PS5, love the art style, gameplay is so polished, truly a classic game 👏👏👏
I would love to see a speed run of manual Samual, that game seems right up your alley
Also no mouse, only keyboard spamming ground attack with sword on
Hades is so good, would highly recommend it.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS😭😭❤️❤️!! Hades is my favorite movie as soon as I saw the game trailer!!
LOVE THIS GAME!!! So glad your speed-running it!
Great game! Only real gripe is how RNG progressing the story was. I got pretty far but never finished because story beats stopped for me.
I feel proud that I got all achievements for this game
I usually dont like speedruns, but this one is clean with no exploits and I am watching it as a guide to the game !
Clearing this game in a single fresh file attempt is seriously difficult. Like, I've had a few attempts even after playing for hundreds of hours and the best I think I've done has been in like 5 runs. Not having that extra dash or any death defiances makes things downright nasty. WP!
recently obsessed with the game, so it was a pleasant surprise to see a new video of this
This got me to Styx on my 20ish run and greatly helped my understanding of the game and it’s bosses
HES FINALLY DID IT. HE FINALLY DID IT
Finally bro been waiting for this vid. Hades is an amazing game I’ve been playing since the early alpha so glad you tried this!
my high school marching band played 2 songs written from Hades that have never been played before. in the blood and lament of orpheus
I never reached Hades on my FF run, and only beat Theseus twice. Great job!
I've played got hundreds of hours on hades but for some strange reason i actually can't remember ever getting athenas legendary, weird
A lot of the legendaries are easy to miss for a long time, especially if you don't know what the prereq is. Probably you just never had an interest in brilliant riposte so you never had it actually become available
finally a game i actually play/speedrun
I dont play fresh file but I love trying to do unseeded unmodded runs
As a Percy Jackson nerd I kept on think omg I know this from the books!
BUT you can't get calls in fresh file, it takes a few runs to unlock those.
thank you for posting this video I would not have known I could get up close to Hades during the final boss fight and you will help me beat him very very first time after over 60 runs thank you
My favorite gaming youtuber and my favorite video game. YES
From a runner with 8000 fresh file runs, GG ! 🎉
One of my first roguelite game. What a trial by fire this shit was hard
Im a former top 1 speedrunner for any regular any%, and fresh file is definitely not a joke. Nice job on beating it (please praise me and notice my praise on you and you should feel privileged to recieve my acknowledgement)
Love your content the games you play are so fun and you make them even better
the way you also speedrun ending the video
I LOVE HADES FINALLY YOU PLAYED IT I’VE BEEN RECOMMENDING IT TO EVERY YTER 😭😭😭
two things I didn’t see mentioned that should be mentioned if you’re gonna speedrun this game - it’s OK to reset early (if you don’t have at least the prerequisites for your build by around the end of Tartarus for example) but you need to die to actually reset, since the game preserves the RNG seed if you quit. the second thing is you should try to learn the timings of your enemy waves and aim to be at the door when the last guy dies, instead of spending a few seconds every room to run to the door.
also get comfortable pause buffering to read room rewards and have fun throwing away good attempts because of Satyr Sack RNG!
A little late to the party but congrats !!
Another viable, yet not-as-good option for the first run clear is Drunken attack + Curse of Vengeance (Ares revenge passive) for the Curse of Nausea duo, that way you can still keep the utility of Athena special. I have a screenshot with that combo at 26 min clear IGT.
ya gotta love the classic "today were speedrunning ______" really the best phrase you can hear
I love combining hangover with the dual fist weapon
'Athena is one of my favorite gods' -EazySpeezy talking about a Godess🤣
still a god thats just the general classification
I love seeing you speedrun roguelikes, as they are very diffcult to master. I suggest that you try speedrunning Slay the Spire next, which is a totally different roguelike, yet it would be interesting to see how you would apporach it
The fact that his final time was slower than the time you need for the fully leveled Tight Deadline is ridiculous. Goes to show how hard that challenge is
Props for not spoiling the ending
Speedrunning a fresh file is madness
Fresh file speedruns are the most respectable to me
"You're grounded!"
Ugh...how long?
" . . . *indefinitely* "
After I watched this, I cleared my first run in Hades. Not sure what that means about my skill but the speedrun is very cool to see
Taking shop instead of free dyonysus was actually a real strat since you skipped boon selection and him yapping its quicker to run through shop
I have over 400 hours in Hades and I have never seen Healing (the "fast food") as a room reward?! Is that a fresh file thing?
I'm very glad one of my favorite games got this attention. And how did he do it in one run? God Gamer.
I bought this game today and here's new video about it😅
My first playthrough of this game, I got all the way to the final Hades phase, and ended up taking a laser to the face and dying. It was heartbreaking :( Buuut then I just beat it next round with the roguelite meta upgrades and it didn't feel as bad (though I admit it feels a lil disappointing to think that I needed the meta upgrades to beat it).
Me playing hades for a year still not having divine protection watching him get it on a brand new file and then ME RIGHT AFTER
Shatters my heart☠️
It is guaranteed to get it on the first try (you just have to survive enough)
Speed runs are crazy, this game would take me days and he just sat down for like 45 minutes and said “done”
On the sword I once made a build for its special that did 400 damage💀
almost 900 on a crit💀💀💀
This games so fucking good, I can't wait for the next one to come out, I'm way hyped
When I first reached the Hades boss, I was low on health and he took my single death defiance, but then I got him down without taking anymore damage. I was grinning thinking I beat him, then to my horror he healed for his second phase, which turned my grin into a frown.
