This run was like everything wrong with the last patch in a single vid. Oceanus reward nerfs and Echo boon nerfs both rearing their ugly heads and both very nearly bricked the run. Trivia: Despite being associated with witchcraft, Tarot cards in the style of the Arcana Cards are actually from the early Renaissance period of Italy, and therefore have nothing to do with Ancient Greece and its mythology. Bit of a weird choice from the devs but I gotta admit the system itself is quite cool and more interactive than the Mirror of Night was. Tarot cards were originally added to decks as a 'trump card' system to expand upon existing suites in the Italian deck, similar to the Jester card still included in regular playing packs that are important to certain card games. The very first Tarot cards were introduced in 1440 as allegorical scenarios related to divinity and the Christian lifecycle (ironic considering the game's later ties to witchcraft and demonology). Even this early on cards were associated with gambling, and thus, sin, so perhaps the early allegorical versions were made as an attempt to appease the church about their evil nature. The first confirmed deck with the original 21 cards comes from Milan and was used by its dukes during card games, although variations have existed since at least 1418 with different trump cards with different effects and depictions. Because the tarot cards were originally hand-painted, at first their spread was slow and variance between decks was high. However, the invention of the printing press and the many wars Italy was embroiled in at the time meant that mass-produced versions of the Milan decks soon spread to Switzerland and France, and from there, to the rest of the world. To this day in Italy and other non-English European countries tarot cards are used for playing as much as they are for divination and the occult. In fact, several variations of the deck's ordering existed in Italy (especially in its South, away from the mass-produced variation's dominance) lasted for hundreds of years, with one version where The World was stronger than The Angel lasting up until only a hundred and fifty years ago. Here in the Anglosphere, though, playing cards with trumps never took off to nearly the same extent as in continental Europe, so tarots were seen as an exotic curiosity focused mainly on magic. The occultist use of the deck is actually extremely recent, dating to 1780s France. Back then there was a rumor going around that the Arcana dated back to Ancient Egyptian times, so the decks produced were themed after Egypt's Book of Thoth, God of Knowledge, Justice and Wisdom. Occultists tried to tie the interpretation of the symbols of the deck as a practice to the initiation rituals for goddesses like Isis, Demeter and Persephone (the connection to Mel appears!). In these rituals, bright flashing lights and other intense sensory shocks induced a state of confusion in the participant, until they were grounded in clearly presented symbols that allowed their then-disoriented senses to focus on one thing and one thing only (in Demeter's case it was often a sheaf of wheat, a symbol of her fertility). The French occultists tied the reading of the cards to this revelation of divine symbols and how it was tied to a person's timeline and life history. It wasn't until 1783 (less than two hundred and fifty years ago) that the first 'manual' on 'how' to read the Tarot deck was published. Several occultists all claimed to be the first to do this at once, but none of them were so important as Eliphas Levi. He reinforced the (bogus) claims the Tarot came down from the ancients, but rather than calling it a component of the Book of Thoth he called it a derivative of the Book of Hermes (a thing he just straight-up made up). According to Levi, a person could use the Tarot cards not just to tell their personal fortune but unlock all secrets of the universe as divinely revealed to the reader, and it's this interpretation that has remained the most popular in occult circles ever since. Just like the occultists' connection to Ancient Greece/Egypt is largely made up and bogus, a lot of the Hades II tarot deck is itself made up and bogus. Some of the Hades II Arcana cards have direct counterparts to the real Arcana, such as The Lovers, Death and The Moon. Others have corresponding counterparts in the deck (just like tarot symbology has corresponding relations to Greek mystery rituals) that are nonetheless not quite the same thing (like how using the symbols to inform your future choices are not quite the same as using the symbols to ground people in a world of chaos), such as The Magician and The Sorceress being easy parallels and The Queen being akin to The Empress (or a Queen card from the regular playing deck, which is sometimes mixed with Tarot cards). Others, like The Centaur, The Titan, The Champions and The Artificer are entirely made up for the game's sake and merely sound like real cards (just like how tarot's connection to ancient religions used fake terms and ideas similar to real principles in Greek religion to seem more official). Often, the games' cards allude to its own lore instead, with The Champions being a reference to how Asterios and Theseus can use Divine Favour in the first game to power a Call like your own and the Lovers being a reference to how Eurydice's keepsake gave the same three shields against a boss enemy, and how she and Orpheus are the most famous lovers in Greek myth.

Ngl every time Chronos does his twirly whirly scythe attack I say 'Good pattern! Good pattern!' out loud. As for Trivia: While Heph is pretty universally portrayed as disabled in all Greek myths, the exact nature of his disability and how he handles it varies from story-to-story. In most ancient Greek stories, Heph was born with a congenital disability involving inward-pointing feet, a trait he passed on to one of his sons who joined Jason on the Argo. However, a more modern telling has his disability as a leg or spinal injury suffered when Zeus threw him off Mount Olympus for trying to protect Hera from one of his unwanted advances. This story is much less popular and Hades II very strongly seems to go with his disabilities being genetic. Vases from ancient Greece portray him as having backwards-or-inwards-curving feet, but he's also often depicted with a hunch that would suggest his condition includes spinal problems. He and his kids are often depicted using the word 'crab-footed' (karkinopus), again suggesting that he ambled along on feet that curve incorrectly. Homer calls him 'the god of the dragging footsteps', and the epic Dionysica calls him 'heaveykneed' and 'hobbling'. One of the reasons he knew Eros, son of Aphrodite and owner of the Heart-Seeking Bow from the first game, was not his own child is because he didn't have the same birth defect the all of his other kids did. Poor guy. Heph's answers to his disability vary from myth to myth, with Homer depicting him creating twenty wheeled tripods that would move his materials around for him at his behest. He also has him using mechanical maids he built himself help support his legs when he wanted to walk. Modern classical vases tend to support this mechanized crutch idea, and some even depict him using an enchanted winged chariot as a wheelchair. In addition, he was known to have made prosthetics for other Gods and I've seen at least one statue of him showing one of his legs is a bronze peg leg. Older representations of him just have him more practically using a tamed donkey to ride around and support him--they tend to come from before the Greeks were good enough at bronze working to even imagine complex tools like chariots and robots made out of bronze. He's also sometimes depicted using a pair of canes to aid him when walking in these older variations. Hades II seems to have made a compromise between the more modern, mechanically-inclined depictions, showing him sitting in a self-crafted wheelchair and having a mechanical prosthesis for one of his legs at the same time. Heph has his disability in common with other forge gods from the same time and era, including a Greek recording of the God Ptah as a dwarf craftsman and the Norse God Weyland the Smith. These gods seem to come from a cultural memory of a time when arsenic was used to finish copper, which would result in neurodegenerative symptoms in copper and bronze smiths that gave them disabilities in walking and skin conditions similar to Heph's 'ugly' skin or face described in Greek myths. This helps date Heph to being a more modern God by Greek standards--he came about during the Bronze Age, long after the PIE people had made their way to Greece. It also challenged the conventional idea of strength in a God, as most of the older, PIE people-derived Gods like Zeus and Poseidon and Hera and Demeter and so on were idealized super-beings of magical and physical strength, but Heph and later Athena became more and more dominant in Greek discourse as Gods of genius, a different kind of strength that served the Greeks better than mere martial prowess ever did.

I do think priming 10 less magic and increasing your only means of regen by 33% would have been better than priming 20 less magic and slightly increasing your on-kill damage with Natural Gas, but that's certainly a less clear comparison with this in mind.

I think people are sleeping on Fight Fight Fight b/c it also permanently heals you for 50% of your max hp while allowing you to overheal for 10 locations. Say you have 200 hp and you get Fight Fight Fight. Your max hp will change from 200 to 300 since 200 × 1.5 = 300. Additionally, your hp will increase by the difference. If you had 50 hp, you would gain the difference of 100 hp for a final number of 150 hp. Your hp does not decrease with each encounter, so once the boon expires you will have 150/200 hp, a gain of 50% of your max hp. Fight Fight Fight is kinda like Circe's healing boon except it doesn't give you Life Affirmation in exchange for overhealing and overcharging max magick. Also W video boated

It's mostly just the opportunity cost. Fight Fight Fight is always alongside at least one of Evade Evade Evade, Survive Survive Survive, or Reward Reward Reward. Evade and Survive are almost always worth more for your overall durability, while Reward is what people go to Echo for if they're just looking for max power and don't feel under any pressure to not die. So there's only really incentive to take Fight if you're worried about dying and see exactly Fight, Reward, and Boon.

I feel like this run would have been more fun without the vows priming magic and nuking specific boons. Fire's main fun is that Hestia combos into herself really well and you were forced to heal up your magic rather than take new boons like three or four times in a row. As such the base damage was really low the whole time. Then again I feel like most runs are more fun without the vows that basically exist to make the gameplay less engaging lol. For trivia: The Greek philosophers all had very different ideas of what each element's properties were and how they operated, with different philosophers throwing in their lots behind different elements as the best, most noble and most important to the cosmos, as well as how the different elements beget different states of change and division. Heraclius was the one who threw himself behind fire as the dominant element, describing it as the agent of change in the world. He was famous for being vague and hard to follow, but his ideas *seems* to have been that fire as an energy source provided the power needed for Chaos to produce the oceans, lands and skies that led to the other elements. In addition, he believed that the human soul was composed of fire and water, with all noble parts of the soul being made of fire and all the ignoble parts of the soul being water. As a water stan myself, I think this whole 'water is evil for your soul' business is all a load of nonsense, but Heraclius *did* die because of fluid swelling beneath his skin due to edema, so maybe he had a point...Plato, who coined the term 'element' to describe these four fundamental states of matter, believed all elements were equally central to the formation of the universe, and that they each had unique geometric shapes that created the shapes of all matter. He associated fire with the tetrahedron, a set of four interlocking triangles. He believed this because rising fire has a sharp, angular shape, rising to a fined point like a triangle. This is why the alchemical symbol for Sulphur is a triangle--it's associated with volcanoes and fire. Plato's student, Aristotle, instead believed that the elements were distinct from matter as we understand it and had no concrete shape. No 'pure' form of the elements existed on Earth, according to him, quite reasonably noting that air could be wet or dry and fire could be ashy and oil could produce flame despite being water and so on. Instead, the elements were ideal concepts that could be divided into warmth (separation) and cold (unity) as well as moisture (adaptability) and dryness (self-determinism). Thus to Aristotle, Fire, being Warm and Dry, was the element of individualism, decision-making, creation and distinctness. He argued that the acts of smithing, cooking and alchemy, which all required fire, ended in distinct creations separate from several combined ingredients and thus that they embodied this harnessing of Fire. As for where all these ideas came from, the originator of the Greek classical elements, Empedocles, proposed the four distinct elements as a reply to philosophers who proposed all matter came from a single default state. He noted that certain states could not coexisted together, such as a bucket filled with air repelling water when lowered upside down and water being snuffed out by fire and so on. He therefore proposed that matter cannot be created or destroyed, a proposal at the core of chemistry even to this very day. Thus, instead of all things coming from building blocks of a single elementary particle, mattered could be divided into mixtures between four distinct and unchangeable states, each associated with four primordial beings of the Greek pantheon at the time--Zeus (air), Hera (earth), Hades (fire) and Persephone (water). Wonderfully, this lines up with Demeter being water, Hera being earth, Zeus being air and presumably Hades being fire if we could get elemental boons from him in Hades II itself. Bravo, devs. Empedocles associated fire with the core of all things, attributing the internal fire core to the world (he lived near volcanoes and thus could tell the Earth's core was burning hot) as the source of divinity. He also described fire as the seat of the highest soul, taken by Promotheus from the sun and given to humanity at its core. He also believed the inner fire was part of a cycle of the sun leaving fire behind in Hades when it set (during his time the Greeks believed the sun went underground into Hades during the night), and that volcanoes were the act of this inner fire of the planet rising back up to the sun via the atmosphere. He described the process of this heat's ascension to the heavens as the innate divinity of Earth rising back up to join with the Heavens. Thus, as he was reaching advanced age (either the age of 60 or 109 depending on the source, but probably 60 since the 109 source comes from Empedocles' fanboys from different eras), Empedocles decided that he would convert himself to a divine being by throwing himself into a volcano rather than die conventionally and condemn himself to a normal mortal afterlife in Asphodel. Thus, he would be consumed by Fire and reborn as an immortal, all his worldly aspects burned up by the fire leaving only his higher seat of divine reasoning. Having done thus, he would obtain immortality among the Gods as a divine being composed of pure reason. His fans describe how his plan worked, and after ascending to the cosmos he was placed on the Moon, where to this day (this day being about five hundred to a thousand years later) he feeds on divine dew and provides reason to the rational souls of the world. His haters however would describe how as he performed this act of hubris the volcano (Mount Etna) spat up one of his bronze sandals, a symbolic rejection of his attempt at ascension by the Gods owing to his innate humanity (need for physical objects such as clothes and shoes). All mortal things in this world are made of several elements, and no amount of any one element could separate a person from their innate personhood--only the Gods could decide to do that.
