You know the drill by now. I finish a game, I smoosh some crude edits together to make some hot-takes. In all seriousness, really enjoyed this one. That just comes with the territory in the YS series! Hope you enjoy it! :)
The Ys series has this way of storytelling that ALWAYS goes far beyond expectations, its always cohesive, you fall in love with every character and truly want to know more about them. Now the cherry on top is the amazing Gameplay
This was my first Ys game, and the one that made me spiral into this madness of binging every Ys game (except Ys V, since that’s not localized) until Ys IX comes out in the west. This was a great video on your part, and one that does the game justice, both in complementing it and also detailing it’s shortcomings. On a side note, that whole bit with Karna being absolutely busted in this game resonated with me so much. Part of the reason I considered this game further was because Frieda exists and blue-haired anime girls are a weakness of mine. But after I played as Karna for a good bit? I didn’t even consider switching to Frieda when I got her. Karna’s that good.
I may not like YS as much as Trails, but it's still right up there as one of my favourite franchises, it consistently delivers quality experiences! Yeah, I loved Karna as a character but my goodness she's pretty much unbenchable. She's got so many advantages gameplay wise over the other characters, and it really had to be mentioned.
for the people out there who don't have consoles, the game is also available on PC on various platforms that I won't quote for various reasons. But just to say that they are there, so do not let your lack of ps4/Vita stop you from enjoying a pretty well-made game.
Ys is the type of game I don't care how shallow the antagonists are. In the end of the day, YS is all about a Man vs Nature type of story. If there are memorable antagonists there, then that's extra gravy (like YS IX)
Glad you liked it! Yeah, the villains were a little bit underwhelming (although I did like the reveal about the true motivations of the black winged one - it's way more interesting than "evil to be evil" or "evil because he's selfish"). As for having no control over the camera - it annoyed me too at first, but I got used to it eventually. I've been playing Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 recently, and there are areas where the game limits your camera control or doesn't let you control the camera at all. Not sure why Falcom did it this way, but I guess they had their reasons. As for characters - it's yet another JRPG where the supporting cast is more interesting than the protagonist. I've noticed this trend a while back. And yes, Doren does seem like he was supposed to be Dogi but got changed (probably to give him a personal stake in the stuff that happens in the game).
Thanks for watching mate, it was an enjoyable game for sure! I think the side characters being more interesting than Adol is kind of a given though, considering he's for the majority a mute character. I think the camera issue was mostly tied to the later areas where the attacks become more rapid. I needed to have it constantly facing the enemy/boss to avoid damage (I wiped on the 3 guardians like 10 times). Still an amazing game though, as you would expect of YS.
3:51, I cannot believe you choose this same soundtrack, this is one of my beloved tracks there. I've finished this about a year ago and I still play it. The violin is lovely.
I have a PS5, so since this is on PS4, I should definitely check this out. . . It would be my 3rd Ys game. I'm kinda wondering if Ys 7 would work on my laptop, since that game is on Steam. *SPOILER FOR YS 8* I was a bit confused by Adol and Griselda obviously knowing each other when you find her in Ys 8. Now I'm seeing that she's in this game too.
Yeah the no hand holding thing was really experienced by me when I played. I feel like Falcom really wanted the players to go to Karna's part first, but I went to Ozma's first. Most people I know that have played the game went to Karna's first. I checked a guide because I was a little confused and even they went with her, so I thought I did something wrong lol
I also went to Ozma's area first. I managed to go in to that dungeon with awful gear as well, and still managed to win out, just took forever. But the challenge had been accepted by that point.
I appreciate that you looked at the game as a whole and did not just say "game bad" as I've heard others call this entry. Superman 64 is a bad game. Memories of Celceta is a good game. Is it one of the weaker Ys games? Yes, but it's still a blast to play.
I have it on Steam and it's a really solid Ys game. It reminds me a lot of Ys 8 and borrows elements from Ys 7 as well. Yeah, it is pretty short but I also enjoyed that about it because it doesn't drag on too much.
This was my first Ys game, and quite frankly I stumbled into it entirely by chance. Went an Eb Games that still had a small handful of vita games, grabbed it on a whim. I have since played through most of the canon Ys games.
That intro was brilliant! Good stuff. This game is RIGHT UP THERE with the best in Ys, maybe just a notch below, but it's got so much going for it. I mean, c'mon Griselda and Frieda!
Great video, I am truly happy Falcom games are finding their way to the West (USA specifically). Just recent to the YS series, (Just own and played 8 and Celceta) they rival the Tales of .... games as the best action jrpg's going. As the series ages and hopefully get's more popular, I hope the stellar game play and amazing music starts to get better and better stories. Fun watch thank you for the upload
Thanks for the kind words mate! YS Series is sadly underrated, but it's getting more popular along with Trails so I'd like to believe it will continue to grow strongly over the years.
This was my first interaction with the series, in terms of playing it on the Vita when it was released here in Australia in... what was it, 2013? But my first actual interaction was quite a bit earlier (2006?) due to the absolutely awesome music and I absolutely adore this series now, still need to make my way to the Trails series but I'm sure I'll love that too when I've got time to play it.
It's very much a different experience, but if you love that Falcom magic that they instil in many of their titles, then there's a good chance you'll enjoy Trails too!
Great review man, I enjoyed the game myself, my main complaints were I personally felt the ending was quite...underwhelming, and that area towards the end of the game with those weird light bridge puzzles were kinda annoying and confusing to me, but aside from that, fantastic game.
Oh mate, the light puzzles were a pain! You had to backtrack consistently to reset them if you went the wrong way, and then double that if you wanted the treasure chests. Didn't help that the guardian at the end of that route wiped me 5 times.
I'll have to rewatch the intro skit after I've played the game to better appreciate it, which I will because Celceta is next up on my Ys list after finishing Origin a couple weeks back! Just as I was getting used to the Origin combat system too...
I'm on my second playthrogh now on PS4 after I've played the PC version somewhere around release. I like the mechanical improvements compared to Ys Seven, but Ys VIII even improved on them much more. So it's a decent title, but not on top of the Ys franchise. btw I love the Timeless Adventurer Edition, I've even imported it as Marvelous doesn't sell it. Can't wait for Ys IX!
Pretty much how I feel. I can't compare it to YS 7, but there's no doubt that YS VIII has ironed out the issues from this one. But it kind of makes sense since this built on the foundation set by 7, and then translated it on to 8 for fine tuning. And yes indeed, that Limited Edition was amazing! I couldn't justify not spending money on it.
Really hope Ys V eventually gets a definitive remake treatment like this. It's to this day the one Ys I haven't played and since the reviews for both the original and the first remake are mixed to bad, I haven't been able to muster up the motivation to power through them anyways.
1. Falcom games are always good 2. comparing Ys with Trails story is a bit "unfair". I mean Ys tells a good story and i like it overall (hope we get Ys 5 remake soon) but Trails as u sad is longer. I played al Ys games so far mostly 1 time (Origin 3 bc of story) and all were done in aroun 5-20 wiht the exception of Ys 8 around 87h which was a great experience and lots of FUN! But yeah i agree the villians werent that great in Celceta ._." i still need to play all Ys games on nightmare/100% trophy on steam D:
Indeed they are! And yeah, I try to make a habit of not comparing the story with Trails if I can. They're two separate franchises with their own merits, and that's how it should stay.
Not gonna lie I love fixed cameras it’s one less thing to manage in the heat of battle . I am truly debating getting this game. I bought 8 recently and really enjoyed it, then got 9, and I’m kinda hooked very late to the party. There is a certain charm these games have on top of nothing to crazy just nice music fun characters and solid combat that I have really appreciated.
Just a bit of a correction here, ai controlled characters aren't running in random directions, they're running after enemies that are off-screen, same thing happened in ys seven.
I actually like the minimalist approach as in Adol and his companions are exploring a forest. Also the flashbacks kinda gave Adol some character and I liked how every companion came from the different places you encountered in the forest. The ending did felt rushed and MOC is IMO the weakest I've played so far but I still give it a passing grade.
This is my 3rd Y's game and the only one I finished so far because I honestly couldn't put it down because I enjoyed it so much. Now if only I could do this with with Y's 8 and orgins I'll be able to finish those before my backlog grows again 💀
ok this video sold me on grabbing Celceta esp since i beat Ys 8. this just looks like a older version of it. and i love island type explorations. Plus Karna looks waifu af (also the lovely griselda had that cameo in Ys 8 so i would love to play the game shes in). and its on PS4/5 so that is another game i can try to Platinum.
My only real issue is that half the cast attack slower than I like. I hated having to use the Dogi clone. Aside from that your thoughts on the game are about how I feel atm. Looking forward to finishing the last dungeon
I wish that Ys 8 let you get MoC Adol's hoodie and Ys 7 Adol's armor as optional costumes in addition to the classic Silver Armor (which, IMO, looked kinda silly on Adol's 3D model). Also, I would argue that in many ways Ys 8's story is "just" an extremely expanded version of MoC's.
The moment I'm salty even today that the PS4 port of this game is flawless while the PC port is like a bad emulation of the PS Vita version xD Also, it's not that the IA runs around for no reason, the IA focus on grabbing items. So it will run around to grab every single coin for you sometimes XD And I know you think the Ranged characters in this game are busted, but just a heads up: Aisha in Ys Seven is the sole reason Falcom NEVER Gave us another ranged character that used a BOW before. The girl is essentially an assault rifle, I've never seen a DPS so high in a Ys Game in my life, and once you get her stream skills, you can essentially double the distance between you and her and spam a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT of shoots at once. Frankly, I think the Ranged character here may be busted too, but not as BUSTED. It may feel that way because Ys Seven kinda limits you with SD for half of the game, and in the other half you still have a sore thumb for charging the energy to have an SP charge with your character's combo, but really, she has no fucking cool down. And Seven HAS 2 ranged characters, one of them far slower than the other, and even so Aisha is the go-to easy game most of the time you have her with you.
@@brandonthomas6602 Oh its not that it's bad. Can you see the HUD in his footage? How the sprites, menus, life bar and SP bar, icons and all that is crisp and sharp? So, take all of that scrap them out, grab the original PS VITA sprites, shove it into a game that scales to a minimum of 1080p while Vita's main resolution is 960 × 544 and most of those HUD elements uses 1/9 of the screen there and you have the worst quality in menus you've ever seen in the game. It''s so jarring to me that it took me three years to actually play this game after buying it. I would recommend the HD Upscale Texture PAtch, that fixes all of the issues and make the game looks AWESOME, better than the PS4. Fans grabbed the textures, worked on them and made them not only better but sharper and even gave some details to them, so not only the menus are sharp, most of the world is too, however you will need the texture injector AND note that it's a 9GB download that will be extracted into 25GB of space on your disk, and remember of first executing the game with the injector screen first so the injector can create the folder the tutorial will ask you to dump the textures, and you may have to create some of those folders but it's a simple process, it's just NOT OFFICIAL. And that bugs me with XSEED ports: Every single Falcom Game they ported have a fan-made patch that fixes the game's graphical issues, but it's not official, meaning someone had to take their time and effort to fix a game you will pay for and not everytime have the best quality looking image on your screen.
And because of so many remade games. I lost touch of what's on official timeline of the story. I need to look it up later. Btw I can't choose between Karna and Frieda, Calilica too. They're the first women to fight alongside Adol before ys 8 and 9. What was lovely about Carna was, from what I could remember, was the only party member to perform a super and still move.
Indeed! It makes you realise that the games themselves have some degree of inter connectivity among them which is always nice to see. I do want to play YS VI now because of a certain character introduced in Celceta.
I originally bought this on vita but never finished so when i heard the remaster was coming to ps4 i just waited and went thru the game i thought it was fine but not my favorite YS game
I loved this game. I need more action rpgs!! Any other games like it for PS4/5? I already played all other Ys games on PlayStation so what other game is very similar to it? And go.
Now, I've been thinking about what the next Ys game will be. I don't know if Falcom already said that they're making Ys X yet. But, we do know that they are beginning the development of the next Ys game, whatever it is. So it's safe to assume it could end up being a remake of Ys V, if not Ys X. Would the Ys V remake have the same engine as Ys XI, or will it be evolved further?
They said that the initial stages are in motion for the next YS title, but we don't know if it's YS X or a remake of a previous title. It's very likely that the shareholder meeting this year will be the new Trails game (they've already mentioned it's in development), and 2021 will be YS due to the anniversary. I personally think it will be YS X, but a remake of V would be solid.
I don't find the length that short. I've been doing a playthrough of the series and it's probably the longest so far. Next being Ys 7, which wasthough. At least double the length of the older ones (1, 2, Origins minus replaying as all three chars, Ark, and Felghana). I have made it to 8 and 9 yet, though.
Sony really missed an opportunity to give the PS4 version of memories of so subtle it’s on trophies that way for people like myself who had completed the vita version, could go through and unlike the trophies and a platinum all over again on their main console… The Witcher three did this with every version of its game- and it is why I bought every version of it that released on both my Xbox and my PS4 but we are memories of Sarasota is concerned, I didn’t even bother when they finally ported and upscaled it to PS4?!?!? To say the least I was pissed they did this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my copy of the game and just beat it. Good game! Ys 8 is still my favorite and I prefer Ys 9 as well, but this one still had that Ys goodness I like. The ending was. . . Very unsatisfying though. It ended a good game with a sour taste in my mouth, which kinda sucks.
This was my first experience with Ys, the vita for me. Also, since you mention chips and gravy, try poutine, it's Canadian and amazing. But for the love of Aidios, use actual cheese curds and not shredded cheese (trust me, you'll be thankful if you do!)
I will have to keep an eye out! We Brits eat many things that look unappetising to the rest of the world, and I dare say Canadian cuisine has some perks that we can get behind.
@@TheKisekiNut If you like pastry, you have to make Beaver Tails! That's another distinctly Canadian thing. We also have Montreal Smoked Meat which is similar to pastrami but way better! :D otherwise, we kind of just go, eh we have a lot of different cultures here, let's fuse it all together and hope it tastes ok.
@@TheKisekiNut If you're ever in Toronto specifically, I'd happily show you around to all of the cool historic areas near by (that I can think of - we don't have as many as the U.K. but we have some! also, I can show you to some of the cool places to eat.
Bought this back on the Vita when it originally came to me it felt underwhelming compared Ys VII mostly in the boss category. I loved the boss fights in VII I liked the fact that the game limited the amount of healing items you could bring in this requiring a good amount of skill. The only thing that I didn’t like was the repetition of the levels in VII. In this game you can bring tons of healing items to fight thus face tanking is a viable strategy I also didn’t like that you had to go into menu in Celceta to heal thus pausing the action in VII the menu was real time thus minimizing the delay between healing and actions I kinda hope the series incorporates more real time menus for stuff like healing. Also I wasn’t that big of a fan of the final boss as it was pretty easy and very forgettable. This was good video and I may give it another chance down the road as I never finished it on nightmare only hard.
I don't have YS VII as a reference, but I found this game decently challenging on the higher levels. I will admit you can alleviate the pressure by effectively pausing the game for heals, but I found a simple combo was enough to bring it back down to critical levels. If they sorted out the melee/ranged imbalance I think it would have been just right.
Great game I originally played on Vita by the only thing I think I hate is the secret boss in the north of the map and didn't get a thropy (also not 💯% mapping either after uncovering all)
I own celceta and Dana i never play a ys games before what Game do you think is a better starting point i know that the entire series of ys is like final fantasy that every Game is a diferent story except adol is the protagonist in all of them
You can start on either of them. If you want the better experience I would suggest starting with Celceta and then move to YS VIII, since the latter is more polished mechanically, and overall just a better game.
The only annoying thing I found with the game was The lack of voice lines for the characters, since they're literally given 1 or 2 lines and the rest is in the memories category (More annoying with the companions)
The game is fine, but it is a disappointment compared to the rest of the series. It is the weakest version of IV story wise, and the weakest except for V soundtrack wise. I could have accepted the bad story if the soundtrack wasn't just awful. The game has LESS music than any other version of Ys IV. And most of it is new and honestly nowhere near as good as the compositions in either version of Ys IV. Oath in Felghana is a remake done right, the characters are the same, the story is the same, the soundtrack is the same but everything is just better. Memories of Celceta is the opposite, many of the characters are completely different, the main story is almost entirely different and the music is worse. Thankfully it is still an Ys game, and it plays like a dream. And a great story isn't necessary for Ys, but man this game is such wasted potential.
That's fair, a lot of people consider it as one of the weakest in the series. I personally loved it despite the shortcomings, though I admittedly don't have the other 2 versions of YS IV as reference (I've heard Mask of the Sun isn't great though). I also loved the soundtrack. There were indeed a few weaker tracks here and there, but there were several that I put straight on to my phone to work out to. That's just the beauty of personal taste.
@@TheKisekiNut Ys IV has a great soundtrack, it's just a shame that most of it isn't actually in Memories of Celceta, look up the Ys IV perfect collection to see what you are missing. I'd highly recommend Both other YS IV games, Dawn is the fan favorite, but I really think Mask is underrated. Dawn is basically Ys 2 on overdrive, Mask tries to be its own thing, doesn't always succeed, but I appreciate it for that.
You know the drill by now. I finish a game, I smoosh some crude edits together to make some hot-takes.

Can`t go wrong with Falcom.
Pretty much! I've yet to play a Falcom game that has been sub-par.
That intro based on the way adol gets his memories, great job! Loved it
That B grade in Drama is coming in handy!

haha really like the intro😂 bought it on my vita last 2015 but actually played it last year
Glad you liked it mate, that drama GCSE is coming in handy! :)
ok this video sold me on grabbing Celceta esp since i beat Ys 8. this just looks like a older version of it. and i love island type explorations.
The moment I'm salty even today that the PS4 port of this game is flawless while the PC port is like a bad emulation of the PS Vita version xD
Also, it's not that the IA runs around for no reason, the IA focus on grabbing items. So it will run around to grab every single coin for you sometimes XD
And I know you think the Ranged characters in this game are busted, but just a heads up: Aisha in Ys Seven is the sole reason Falcom NEVER Gave us another ranged character that used a BOW before.
Is the pc version that bad, I just picked it up
@@brandonthomas6602 Oh its not that it's bad.
Great video! just want to add that if PS4 isn't an option you can also find it on PC via Steam.
I was contemplating the PC version but I wanted an excuse to open the limited edition box!
I was so glad I played this game before 8 came out because Griselda shows up
Indeed! It makes you realise that the games themselves have some degree of inter connectivity among them which is always nice to see. I do want to play YS VI now because of a certain character introduced in Celceta.
@@TheKisekiNut OH YEAH, HIM.
First YS game i played. Loved it. I will admit i felt the ending was weak. But the other 99.9 %. 😎👍
great intro. For those who've played Celceta.
It is indeed!
Sony really missed an opportunity to give the PS4 version of memories of so subtle it’s on trophies that way for people like myself who had completed the vita version, could go through and unlike the trophies and a platinum all over again on their main console…
The Witcher three did this with every version of its game- and it is why I bought every version of it that released on both my Xbox and my PS4 but we are memories of Sarasota is concerned, I didn’t even bother when they finally ported and upscaled it to PS4?!?!?
To say the least I was pissed they did this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got my copy of the game and just beat it. Good game! Ys 8 is still my favorite and I prefer Ys 9 as well, but this one still had that Ys goodness I like.
The ending was. . . Very unsatisfying though. It ended a good game with a sour taste in my mouth, which kinda sucks.
please review xanadu next ?
I bought the import Version last year in akibahara. I def enjoy this badboy 🎮
It was a good move for them to port it to PS4, especially with the Limited Edition. Well worth the playthrough.
@@ColinLack Pretty much sounds just like us for the most part! I'll have to keep an eye out if I ever go to Canada! :)
@@TheKisekiNut If you're ever in Toronto specifically, I'd happily show you around to all of the cool historic areas near by (that I can think of - we don't have as many as the U.K. but we have some! also, I can show you to some of the cool places to eat.
@@ColinLack I'll take you up on that if I ever come over! :)
I'm currently working on getting platinum. Doing a replay
O so they ported it to ps4? Nice I have it for the vita , it's a very nice game :)
Indeed they did! Good choice too!
So, what about YS 4 Mask of the sun then ?
i'm playing on the vita so far so good
Great game I originally played on Vita by the only thing I think I hate is the secret boss in the north of the map and didn't get a thropy (also not 💯% mapping either after uncovering all)
I must admit, mapping it out to 100% was a pain, since there just a small nook I may have missed that I couldn't find via the map.
imagine presuming of collector editions... i have just seen all in my life
I own celceta and Dana i never play a ys games before what Game do you think is a better starting point i know that the entire series of ys is like final fantasy that every Game is a diferent story except adol is the protagonist in all of them
You can start on either of them. If you want the better experience I would suggest starting with Celceta and then move to YS VIII, since the latter is more polished mechanically, and overall just a better game.
@@TheKisekiNut thanks you for your answer i think i will do that
I just found out they're remaking Ys 8 as a mobile game
Great game I got the vita version.
The only annoying thing I found with the game was
The lack of voice lines for the characters, since they're literally given 1 or 2 lines and the rest is in the memories category (More annoying with the companions)
Is it an upgrade to YS Seven or a let down?
YS Seven was the first game to use this battle system, Memories of Celceta followed it. I liked Celceta more than 7, but both are excellent games.
Ys memories of Mamaceta!!!
Are you calling the game forgetable in the opening?
You're reading too much in to a skit my man.
Im still playing Ys7.... :/
It's on my list for another time! I'm interested to see how that one holds up.
11:35 visit Quebec, we make good poutine. ;)
This is my least favorite YS game, I really don't enjoy mostly anything about it.
I'm glad the shift to full 3D got drastically better after this.
