@@RedThunderSP honestly 5 is the biggest part for 9 and most in the west would have no idea about good portions of the story and where it came from if they never downloaded the rom hack translation of ys 5
I was wondering when this was coming! Nicely done all around, and I'm glad I could help. Didn't even have time to get into some of the game's weirder and more technical oddities. Like how the game reads its data from cartridge upon entering an area, like a CD-ROM based title, or the fact that you can move in eight directions but only jump in four... plus there was the interesting task of finding the proper Romanization of the names (and knowing when to change them, like with "Storker").

Played Ys V earlier this year in preparation for IX. It's a peculiar one to be sure. Overall unremarkable but I couldn't help but imagine but be intrigued by Stoker's story and Kefin's lore. Perhaps one day it'll get remade. Ys IX making several references to it makes me want to believe.
Awesome video! Ys V is the only game in the series I have yet to play so it was great to learn more about its history and relation to the rest of the series. A remake or remaster would be great to see, but I do plan to play it one way or another. Thanks again for the great video!
Coming from someone who has only played two of these games, (I plan to play more of them soon) Ys V is fine. It's fun to play, but it's outclassed by many games that play similarly that were made much earlier. It won't leave a mark on you the same way that Secret of Mana or even Alcahest will.
I played the fan translation of Ys V with my brother and we quite liked it. Not everyone can say they have played it and I'm glad I did. And finished it too. I understand the criticism, though. But it's part of the history of the series and should not be forgotten or neglected. Maybe we'll see a complete remake of it one day. As it should have been back in the day.
Ys V being the only game in the series I haven't played yet, I would love to see that game get the remake treatment from Falcom, maybe even along the lines of FF7R, with expanded story, improved gameplay and all that
Great info on Ys 5, I starting to play all Ys game, with about to finish Ys1, lucky most of Ys game is on steam, one is not on steam is Ys V. I liking the Ys1, the story, soundtrack and combat is really great, I did encounter the most difficulty boss in Ys series, it is annoy to fight with, lucky I managed to kill it. It will be long time to reach Ys V but i will be giving it every chance, same with all Ys games. Also, Happy Birthday!
The Ark of Napishtim has the best soundtrack imo, and debatebly one of the better titles in the whole franchise.. What a way to revive the series. I'd be up for a remake Celceta or Oath style (I like both engines)
I got to say apart of everything...the small small narration (straight foward) inside Ys V is dark. Really. Is dark theme. But of course we need a biiig change. And the biiiigggg evolution of story narration and inside characters. So if they evolve everything with a mega remake it will be thexy.
Since 1-4 all got remade this one definitely should be next along with X. Especially with alchemy and Xandria getting name dropped a good bit. Fingers crossed. I'm down for for Celceta treatment.

A big reason why I've put FF behind me is because XIII and XV don't feel like Final Fantasies. As rough as YS V must've been for Falcom, it's good they learned this lesson early.
I joked with a friend saying that with my luck now that I’ve picked up the series after years they would announce a remake of this not long after I finished all of them.
I started playing Ys while waiting for the Geofront version of Trails to Azure. Starting with Origins I really loved what I played that continued with Ys I+II, it was remarkibly impressive in it's story and unique gameplay style. Ys 3 was solid but not quite the greatness of the others but it was at least still short enough that it was still fun. I'm playing Ys IV and while I generally like the premise and it's narrative structure, there's parts of the Story that are disappointing or even bad. Okay that's admittedly too harsh. There's one line though where Asad says "we pride ourselves on our hospitality." which is the dumbest line I've ever heard after they spent so much time explaining how this village is secluded in a mysterious forest and nobodies been there in maybe hundreds of years. That just says to me that it's not as well thought out like Origins through 2 were. I loved the Characters of Reah and Feena and how they were Goddesses but really they were just people with a whole lot of responsibility. I've already bought all the games up to and including VIII (not V duh) I'm just worried that the reasons that I liked Ys might not be there and wondered what others thoughts on this might be. The fact that they get longer is already a worry of mine because Origins was about 10 hours per route and I+II were a little over 10 each, 3 was maybe like 15. I'm worried a long 80 hour game may suffer from it's length. Isn't to say long games aren't good. I love Trails and each are like 70+ and I put 130 hours in Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I can't seem to get away from long games. If anyone read all of this rambling, I'm amazed. Why would you do that. +2 internet points for you. Anyway thanks. P.S. I think Adol should be pretty FIT by the later games, come on, he's been adventuring for a while now, why's he so squishy lookin? Not like Dogi, just look like someone who's worked hard and didn't just get off the boat.
Ys V will likely follow the same formula of Ys X, just like they did in old days with Ys VI. Ark was a new fresh start back in the day, then they remade Felghana and ended with Origin. Few years later we had 7 with the new party system then they remade 4 (celceta) and continued with the party until now, so is a matter of time until V remake.
I need to check this out! I've been hooked on Ys since the early 90s with Ys I & II On the TurboGrafx system, it was a masterpiece! I played Ys III on SNES and Sega Genesis.. Ys origins on the switch was good too, the storylines are excellent!💯
Great video, always wondered what the deal was with Ys V. Hope they remake it and into something better. Don't know if that's the completionist in me talking or my OCD.
I think with such a storied series, any sort of 'hole' within it is going to inevitably lead to people wanting it to be made available in a better form. Take that recent Suikoden English patch, though admittedly that was a game that didn't really need a remake.
I've heard people say that it's their favourite game of all time. So I'll have to find time for it in the future for sure. Unfortunately my backlog at the moment is pretty hefty.

This video finally pushed me to play through Ys V. It was the last mainline Ys title I hadn't played yet and honestly I enjoyed it for what it was. The story was entertaining enough and the game was fun to play. I'm assuming a reason why falcom is hesitant on remaking it is probably due to the expectations that it'd be on the latest engines they've been using for their games. Making it all that much more work for a story that wouldn't be able to hold up by todays standards unless expanded upon greatly. Especially in comparison to the much longer titles Ys has been producing. Anyway, that's my two cents. Was a good watch and thanks for giving me the final push to play Ys V haha.
I wanna have Ys 1 and 2 Remakes in the Origin-System and Ys 5 in the Party-Team-Based system we are experiencing right now. Both systems are wonderful to play (as I have played Origin, 3 Remake, 4 Remake and 8 right now) the story of Adols beginning should never be forgotton ♥!
I still haven't gotten around to play any Ys games since I'm still playing Trails. After I'm done with Cold Steel, I will probably start with Origins and then play the entire series while I wait for Hajimari to come out on Switch. My friend played Ys 8 and she loved it. I also moved back home after living on that mountain for so long. Now I just have to get my desk into my new room and then i can set up my PC on it. I am looking forward to playing Ys, even though I will probably suck at it. Just like Castlevania.
I mean.....Ys V might be in the process of being remade, or they might be doing Ys X. But I can only go off of speculation of something they said about wanting to do so for their 35th Anniversary next year. They teased at either something past, or something next.
Honestly, I trust that Falcom can improve on V's story. They absolutely did with Felghana and Celceta and their nonsensical characters that lack any sense of context for the most part in the originals (then again I played the SNES version for both of those, which weren't directly written by them so that might be an unfair comparison). If there's anything Falcom is good at though it's good pacing. To this day I'm still surprised at how immersed I got with both Felghana and VI despite their age. Even the transition to VIII's longer format with extra non-essential fluff dialogue I still managed to be constantly invested.
Overall great insight and information! Only piece I disagree on is blaming the SNES sound chip for the music. The OSTs for Ys 3 and 4 translated fine so they could have carried a similar sound to 5 but went the orchestral route. I still need to play this!
Wondered why it was forgotten but seeing how it looks like Secret of Mana Chrono Trigger and FF6, makes sense if it's massively eclipsed by titles like that
Happy birthday anyways! Funny that you bring up Ys V - I just beat it yesterday (Aeon Genesis for the win!) My thoughts: Some of the themes presented are pretty dark (it started to get an Ys 2 vibe as I got towards the end) but it's otherwise your standard happy go lucky Adol kicking butt, taking names, and wooing the ladies. The game itself is the easiest of the bunch that I've played so far and the magic system though interesting wasn't useful. Graphics and effects were pretty good for it's time and Falcom did well with the consoles strengths. The music strayed away from its metal roots but I did enjoy a few of the tunes. It's not a bad entry as it tried out a few new gameplay mechanics but it's mediocre compared to the rest of the series - it reminded me of Enix's Brainlord without the long dungeons and difficult puzzles.
I want to mention something that he briefly footnotes in this video. He mentions 'unrelenting challenge' in the Ys games. See, while it's true that modern Ys games have coddled players (in terms of allowing you to stock up on ludicrous quantities of healing items and such), back then it wasn't that way AT ALL! Back in the early days, Ys was Dark Souls before Dark Souls was a thing. This is something that modern fans of the series often don't know.

But even with the higher difficulty settings, you're not playing a game where you can hold exactly one of each major healing item at a time (although I think in the first two you could have three at a time). And don't get me wrong. I have no problem with the games allowing you to have more healing items at a time. It's just an observation I made.
@@SBabyEh, I still say that Ys VIII and IX on Inferno are way harder than any version of the first 4 Ys games (even Wanderers). Healing items is only one aspect of difficuly, and it's somewhat negated when most enemies can one-shot you. Sorry, idk why I'm replying to a year-old comment. Just ignore me, I'm bored.
Its not really forgotten. They did remake it for the PS2 and start Y's VIII off with a huge reference to it via the Isios Blade. Which makes little sense, because Dogi wasn't with Adol and the end of Y's V.
Well, almost everything has already been said in this video. I've finished Ys V last year as the last black hole on my Ys list and yeah, it's the worst one, but it's not a complete failure. The soundtrack does have some nice pieces and and the story is a foundation you can build upon, but much additional work is needed in order to make a proper modern Ys game out of it. It does show however how much Ys VI improved on V, still one of my favourite ones, though dash jump might be the worst thing Falcom has ever invented.
I think that it is a matter of when, not if Ys V will get a remake similar to Memories of Celceta being a reimagined remake of Ys IV. I mean Ys IV on SNES was probably seen with just as much criticism as Ys V, and if you ask me Ys IV Mask of the Sun might be the worst Ys game in the franchise in spite of that being the canon Ys IV until it too was replaced by Memories of Celceta. As to when the remake will come out, who's to say, it could be announced later this year or 5 years from now, but I think that it is a matter of time seeing as every other game got a remake with heavily expanded and retold stories and overhauls to gameplay.
I'll leave it up to Falcom if they want to remake this game. I played a bit of it and it was okay but not very memorable. I'd honestly like a remake of VI and possibly Oath and Origin in the style of VIII and IX to see a modern interpretation of those games, but even then I don't think VIII and IX's gameplay would be a good fit for the VI engine games. Honestly updated visuals with the same top down perspective and gameplay would be very nice IMO, just add the dash and double jump to VI please. Ys VI online dashed my hopes for this because it looks like they outsourced it to make a shoddy mobile game that doesn't play anything like the original game, the music and art I've seen of it looks and sounds really good though. Anyway whether it be a remake of V or they move on to X I'll definitely continue to enjoy this series as it continues.
I just finished this game and I actually enjoyed it! It was definitely easy. The music was absolutely a step down. The gameplay was a bit clunky and the story wasn't the best in the series. That said, it was still a fun game and I'm glad I played it.
i think Ys V still had hope to be get second chance, but it will be very long time.. at least Ys 8 confirm what happen in Ys V by using the ultimate sword from that game
I played three times included his "dlc" expert but the original V its a good start to newbie players in rpg games and also a good entry in the series Also i love Niena and his song and the history of kefin is amazing The worst is the boss His song and the battle are too zzzzzzzzz for me
Good Video, good interview, though I think a couple of the theories here are not well founded. The idea that the SNES was incapable of producing high quality music is a baffling claim for a system whose games are lauded as having the best soundtracks of all time in varioius genres (MMX, FFVI, FFIV, CT, etc.)The idea that it was too late is also i think a questionable one. Though '95 was late, there are a lot of games that came out during this period that nonetheless were very successful and well regarded. SMRPG, DKC, Fire Emblem Geneology of the Holy War, Tactics Ogre, the list goes on. Japan held onto the SFC for a long time, with releases even seeing some success as late as 1998 (Fire Emblem Thracia 776). So while it was late, I don't think that fact itself had much to do with its successs.
To be fair it was 1995, back when games were still more hardcore. I think Falcom just screwed up in multiple areas when it came to the development of this game.
@@TheKisekiNut true honestly older games did come with way more challenge. I remember you saying that Ys Seven was a abit more challenging than Memories of Celceta. Just thought maybe Falcom went down the same path as Square Soft did when they gave people in the West the first taste of Final Fantasy. A game that was WAAAAYYY too easy as a way to get new fans. I mean Falcom already pissed off older fans so m guessing they thought newer ones would like it.
Falcom really should remake this game instead of releasing a Trails game every year like a hen laying eggs... which the West will only be able to enjoy 5 years after their release
I did play Ys 5 like... half a decade a go? And I have to say it was very... hmm... forgettable. I have a feeling that they will not go back to remaking that game for a long time at least. I mean Ys 9 was very alchemy heavy and that could be just enough in their book to fill up that hole Ys 5 left behind, lore wise. All of that said, I would love a remake, even a smaller one with dated graphics and game play like the ones before Ys 7.
ys 5 is one of the best ones in the entire series and im just surprised we never got any kind of release of it yet over here in the west beside a rom hacked translation you have to download to play.
I played it cuz I had to play all the Ys game ... it was bad lol I was happy to see Terra in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim after playing Kefin but nothing else really stood out. The battle system , bosses , story and most of the npc were bland compared to the other title of the series. It should stay lost and forgotten cuz even a full fledge remake will not make it better imo.
Also if Y’S 5 is so bad why did they port it from snes to PS2 along with Y’S 3 Y’S 4 onto PS2 as well there is also Y’S 1-2 eternal story on PS2 all in Japanese but I enjoyed all of them and still do

Play almost all the Ys game, and the only memorable game in the series is I+II on original PC engine, the rest........well the rest of the game in the series is.......welll it's okay not bad yet not so memorable (for me at least)
I'm in the minority, i truly like Ys V, i know it's not a groundbreaking entry, the graphics are kinda weak and the magic system is tedious and useless, but the gameplay, music and story are great.

Either this game needs to be remade or 6 because of the plothole involving Ernest namedropping the location where Ys 5 takes place.

If Falcom keep going down the road of integrating the narrative in to future games, I feel like they'll have to revisit Ys V at some point.

FF series has always been about changing things in each title so it seems everyone has their own idea about what is a "true FF game".

I think it's more toned muscle than anything. Adol's never gonna be huge, but his cardio will be god tier.

Falcom may forget it. Fans may forget it. But I wont. It has one of my favorite Ys endings.
I still haven't gotten around to play any Ys games since I'm still playing Trails. After I'm done with Cold Steel, I will probably start with Origins and then play the entire series while I wait for Hajimari to come out on Switch. My friend played Ys 8 and she loved it. I also moved back home after living on that mountain for so long. Now I just have to get my desk into my new room and then i can set up my PC on it. I am looking forward to playing Ys, even though I will probably suck at it. Just like Castlevania.
The Ys games are all fairly short and are great for breaks between the larger games (like Trails). Hope you get to enjoy them soon!
A remake of ys v would be great since falcom is getting better and better at making their games.
I mean.....Ys V might be in the process of being remade, or they might be doing Ys X. But I can only go off of speculation of something they said about wanting to do so for their 35th Anniversary next year. They teased at either something past, or something next.
Honestly, I trust that Falcom can improve on V's story. They absolutely did with Felghana and Celceta and their nonsensical characters that lack any sense of context for the most part in the originals (then again I played the SNES version for both of those, which weren't directly written by them so that might be an unfair comparison). If there's anything Falcom is good at though it's good pacing. To this day I'm still surprised at how immersed I got with both Felghana and VI despite their age. Even the transition to VIII's longer format with extra non-essential fluff dialogue I still managed to be constantly invested.
Overall great insight and information! Only piece I disagree on is blaming the SNES sound chip for the music. The OSTs for Ys 3 and 4 translated fine so they could have carried a similar sound to 5 but went the orchestral route.

Wondered why it was forgotten but seeing how it looks like Secret of Mana Chrono Trigger and FF6, makes sense if it's massively eclipsed by titles like that

Funny that you bring up Ys V - I just beat it yesterday (Aeon Genesis for the win!)
My thoughts:
Some of the themes presented are pretty dark (it started to get an Ys 2 vibe as I got towards the end) but it's otherwise your standard happy go lucky Adol kicking butt, taking names, and wooing the ladies. The game itself is the easiest of the bunch that I've played so far and the magic system though interesting wasn't useful. Graphics and effects were pretty good for it's time and Falcom did well with the consoles strengths. The music strayed away from its metal roots but I did enjoy a few of the tunes. It's not a bad entry as it tried out a few new gameplay mechanics but it's mediocre compared to the rest of the series - it reminded me of Enix's Brainlord without the long dungeons and difficult puzzles.
I think you've pretty much given the reason why it failed right here. There's no Ys vibe in this game.

I want to mention something that he briefly footnotes in this video. He mentions 'unrelenting challenge' in the Ys games. See, while it's true that modern Ys games have coddled players (in terms of allowing you to stock up on ludicrous quantities of healing items and such), back then it wasn't that way AT ALL! Back in the early days, Ys was Dark Souls before Dark Souls was a thing. This is something that modern fans of the series often don't know.
Well, the increasing levels of difficulty make up for it.
@@giuseppeparry1365 To a point, it does. But even with the higher difficulty settings, you're not playing a game where you can hold exactly one of each major healing item at a time (although I think in the first two you could have three at a time).
And don't get me wrong. I have no problem with the games allowing you to have more healing items at a time. It's just an observation I made.
@@SBabyEh, I still say that Ys VIII and IX on Inferno are way harder than any version of the first 4 Ys games (even Wanderers). Healing items is only one aspect of difficuly, and it's somewhat negated when most enemies can one-shot you.

Its not really forgotten. They did remake it for the PS2 and start Y's VIII off with a huge reference to it via the Isios Blade. Which makes little sense, because Dogi wasn't with Adol and the end of Y's V.

Well, almost everything has already been said in this video. I've finished Ys V last year as the last black hole on my Ys list and yeah, it's the worst one, but it's not a complete failure. The soundtrack does have some nice pieces and and the story is a foundation you can build upon, but much additional work is needed in order to make a proper modern Ys game out of it. It does show however how much Ys VI improved on V, still one of my favourite ones, though dash jump might be the worst thing Falcom has ever invented.
Dash Jump was... interesting to say the least. Glad it never came back.

I think that it is a matter of when, not if Ys V will get a remake similar to Memories of Celceta being a reimagined remake of Ys IV. I mean Ys IV on SNES was probably seen with just as much criticism as Ys V, and if you ask me Ys IV Mask of the Sun might be the worst Ys game in the franchise in spite of that being the canon Ys IV until it too was replaced by Memories of Celceta. As to when the remake will come out, who's to say, it could be announced later this year or 5 years from now, but I think that it is a matter of time seeing as every other game got a remake with heavily expanded and retold stories and overhauls to gameplay.
I'll leave it up to Falcom if they want to remake this game. I played a bit of it and it was okay but not very memorable. I'd honestly like a remake of VI and possibly Oath and Origin in the style of VIII and IX to see a modern interpretation of those games, but even then I don't think VIII and IX's gameplay would be a good fit for the VI engine games. Honestly updated visuals with the same top down perspective and gameplay would be very nice IMO, just add the dash and double jump to VI please. Ys VI online dashed my hopes for this because it looks like they outsourced it to make a shoddy mobile game that doesn't play anything like the original game, the music and art I've seen of it looks and sounds really good though.
Anyway whether it be a remake of V or they move on to X I'll definitely continue to enjoy this series as it continues.
Coming from PCE Ys4, that was such a sharp decline to the point that I dismissed it’s existence..

Imagine a ys game compiled to one game like FF complete world. Able to travel to places of all ys locations
I just finished this game and I actually enjoyed it! It was definitely easy. The music was absolutely a step down. The gameplay was a bit clunky and the story wasn't the best in the series. That said, it was still a fun game and I'm glad I played it.

The TurboGrafx 16 'is' the PC Engine. It's just how it was called in North America.

Good Video, good interview, though I think a couple of the theories here are not well founded. The idea that the SNES was incapable of producing high quality music is a baffling claim for a system whose games are lauded as having the best soundtracks of all time in varioius genres (MMX, FFVI, FFIV, CT, etc.)The idea that it was too late is also i think a questionable one. Though '95 was late, there are a lot of games that came out during this period that nonetheless were very successful and well regarded. SMRPG, DKC, Fire Emblem Geneology of the Holy War, Tactics Ogre, the list goes on. Japan held onto the SFC for a long time, with releases even seeing some success as late as 1998 (Fire Emblem Thracia 776). So while it was late, I don't think that fact itself had much to do with its successs.
I think Falcom made it easy for new fans so that they wouldn't be discouraged. I think some game developers still do this to this day.
To be fair it was 1995, back when games were still more hardcore. I think Falcom just screwed up in multiple areas when it came to the development of this game.
@@TheKisekiNut true honestly older games did come with way more challenge. I remember you saying that Ys Seven was a abit more challenging than Memories of Celceta. Just thought maybe Falcom went down the same path as Square Soft did when they gave people in the West the first taste of Final Fantasy. A game that was WAAAAYYY too easy as a way to get new fans. I mean Falcom already pissed off older fans so m guessing they thought newer ones would like it.

I did play Ys 5 like... half a decade a go? And I have to say it was very... hmm... forgettable. I have a feeling that they will not go back to remaking that game for a long time at least. I mean Ys 9 was very alchemy heavy and that could be just enough in their book to fill up that hole Ys 5 left behind, lore wise. All of that said, I would love a remake, even a smaller one with dated graphics and game play like the ones before Ys 7.
ys 5 is one of the best ones in the entire series and im just surprised we never got any kind of release of it yet over here in the west beside a rom hacked translation you have to download to play.

I was happy to see Terra in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim after playing Kefin but nothing else really stood out.
The battle system , bosses , story and most of the npc were bland compared to the other title of the series.
It should stay lost and forgotten cuz even a full fledge remake will not make it better imo.
Also if Y’S 5 is so bad why did they port it from snes to PS2 along with Y’S 3 Y’S 4 onto PS2 as well there is also Y’S 1-2 eternal story on PS2 all in Japanese but I enjoyed all of them and still do

Play almost all the Ys game, and the only memorable game in the series is I+II on original PC engine, the rest........well the rest of the game in the series is.......welll it's okay not bad yet not so memorable (for me at least)

I'm in the minority, i truly like Ys V, i know it's not a groundbreaking entry, the graphics are kinda weak and the magic system is tedious and useless, but the gameplay, music and story are great.
