@@mihmnop do you think that fight is "better" in the old pre Chronicles version where the Ys 1 final boss is easier to predict/fight with? Because I feel like the "new" Ys 1 final boss fight is some damn gamedesign homonculus forgetting to know how to breath because it asks a bit too much and with diagonal combat being a thing its WAY easier to get locked and thus ruining a "winning streak" of defeating the boss.
You've somehow managed to make me nostalgic for being a Japanese kid in the '80s. I did have a similar moment playing Ys I&II for the first time on Wii Virtual Console in around 2015~16. I knew the TG-16 was contemporary to the SNES and Genesis, and had my expectations firmly in that mindset, only to have my jaw on the floor when the game starts playing a gorgeous pixel art cutscene with full, very well-done voice acting. The series has a whole just does not miss. The creators at Falcom put passion into every game in the series
Saw this video randomly in my recommendations, and hey - this is really really good! Ys has always been a franchise I was curious about from the outside but I'm yet to play any of them. This was a great introduction, thanks so much for making this!
Great video, man. I just recently started playing Ys IX but decided to stop and start the series from the beginning. With the Steam Spring Sale, I picked up Ys Origin, Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles+, The Oath in Felghana, The Ark of Napishtim, and Memories of Celceta so I am ready to get going on the franchise from the start!
Ooh, nice! I hope you like them! If the earlier games don't do it for you, feel free to just jump ahead to the more modern ones rather than burning yourself out. The good thing about them is they're all quite self-contained, so the play order isn't strict!
@@mihmnop Yeah I was reading that you can really start anywhere but I like to follow the chronology as much as I can. I did play a bit of Ys IX on PS Plus Extra and enjoyed it a lot but wanted to start from the start. I am loving Ys 1 Chronicles so far!
@@Fast_Travel_Gamer The complete chronological order (for the comments posterity) would be Origin, Ys I&II, Memories of Celceta (and Dawn of Ys for the non canon alternative), Oath of Felghana, (V Kefin, which seems to be bland), Lacrimosa of Dana, Ark of Napishtim, Seven and IX. Still, agree that it mostly doesn't matter, but it's a bonus.
i bought today my first Ys game (it was on Sale on Steam) and I decided to go for Ys Oath. I was very overwhelmed by the many choices I had but I think I will have lot of fun. Your video def helped me to be more sure about my purchase :)
Great video! Also you read my mind, I was expecting to see Ys 8 in the top 5. But at the same time not seeing it there made it more interesting to watch since it felt like a fresh perspective ^^
Glad to see there's fans relatively newer to the series that can appreciate the classics so much. Maybe it's because you started with one of the last traditional Ys games ever released. Ironically, I've seen old-ass fans playing from the 80s saying that the latest games are actually the best in the series, lol. I myself started in 2005, when I saw the Ys VI Ark of Napishtim trailer and Ys II Chronicles intro and they blew my mind. I went back and played all the old Ys games I could before my Ys VI on PS2 preorder dropped. Ys Book I & II on TGX is my favorite in the series, followed by Oath in Felghana. Also, I like how you set up how Ys Book I & II was secretly the greatest game ever released at the time but no one knew because most people were too busy playing one of the other greatest games, SMB3, and had no idea what a Turbo Graphx or PCE even was
I only wish I had found the series earlier! Imagine a world where Ys had the same name recognition as Zelda... Interesting that the Turbografx versions are your favourite. It really was the Complete versions additional text that made me fall in love with Ys 2, and I think the Chronicles soundtrack is my favourite--especially because you can swap between soundtracks whenever.
Well youll be happy to hear that I bought ys origin a week ago because it was on sale for $5 and loved it so now I own EVERY game in the series on steam aside from 9 since its still very high in price and I have ys origin, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 to play still lol. I beat origin with yunica but need to go through it with the other characters. I havent even met adol yet! (well thats a stretch, I did jump into 8 for a few hours just to see what was to come but I am going to try and play them in chronological order with the help of a list from online)
@@FunkyPunk1995 ooh, I hope you found Digital Emelas' list. That site is a great resource for jumping into the Ys series. Feel free to move on to the next game after just one playthrough of Origin and come back later on if you don't wanna burn yourself out. You're in for a fun ride!
My first game in the series was YS Ark of naphishtam on the ps2 when i was a teen, I remember even skipping school to play it in my friends basement. At first it was hard because I had never played anything like it but it was one of the orginal games that helped me learn how to "get gud", the music honestly might have helped me break through my depression at the time. later on steam I bought and beat oath in felghana and origins but i havent tried any of the older bump combat ones yet. I did however buy YS 7 and I will probably keep playing tonight. I prefer the 2nd era of combat Felghana is my favorite one out of what i have played so far Proabably because of the actual settings of the game itself but I really have enjoyed YS 7 so far for the same reason. its getting to the point where I enjoy the series enough that I want to start at the first game and play through them all instead of playing the "best" ones
I played 8 and 9 which I loved, but afterwards I didn't know where to go. So I decided to try Origin. At first I wasn't sure if I'd like it...then just like you, I heard it. The intro music. All my doubts were put to rest. Origin is my 2nd fav Ys now. At this point I've played every single game on steam. It's such an underrated series
Always ignored the franchise and this video literally made me buy 1&2Chronicles+ just to give it a chance, love antology series that dwelve in canon from time to time great video gained a sub
Dude now I feel like drop attacking demons just to write about it. My journal is lacking!!! For real though, this was a fantastic introduction to Ys. I've never actually played the series (the horror, I know) because I bounced off Ys 1 HARD (the extra horror, I know). But seeing your passion, I need to give it another shot!
Give it another shot! Ys 1 is really short, too. But if the bump combat doesn't click, I get it. But lucky for you, there are three distinctly different styles of combat 😉
Huge respect for mentioning YS IV The Dawn of YS! It's still one my favorites games in the series and I wish more people would try that one, was kinda disappointed with how Memories of Celceta played out, but still was quite decent.
I've known about the series since I was like 12 but this got me to take the plunge. Copping 1+2 and the 3 action tower style games (Falgana, Origin, and the other one)
It makes me so happy to see the series getting the recognition that it deserves. I am an older fan now, I guess (though not old enough for the originals). I got my start in 2006 with The Ark of Napishtim on PSP. Just randomly picked it out before a road trip and had fond memories of it until my PSP broke. Then did not rediscover the series until 2009-10 with Legacy on the DS. From that point on I was sold. I even imported Felghana and Origin from Falcom in Japan to get them before they were on Steam. I fully agree about the jdk band. They go HARD. Most of my music library is their work. With more fans comes more sales and hopefully more entries!
Ooh awesome! Legacy on the DS is the game that turned me from "Oh yeah, Ys exists..." to someone who doesn't shut the hell up about Ys. Did you keep the tradition of importing them before release up? Have you played Ys X? (I did and I thought it was ...ok)
@@mihmnop Same. Legacy really got me into it. I havent continued importing, since I am into it enough that I like the lore. I need the English translations. I am exited for X though.
I love Ys! My favorite ones are Ys VI Ark of Napishtim, Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana, and Ys Seven but I’ve played them all even V which i hope gets a Falcom made remake after Ys X. I even love Ys Books I&II. And dang the music is soooo good.
"clunky but on crack" might be the best definition of a game's combat I've ever heard! 😄Great vid too, I've been thinking about giving the series a try for a while!! Edited to add my admiration for your taste in beverages!! You are clearly a connoisseur of the good things in life!! I reckon you actually live in Japan? And can go get famichicken whenever you want? Aaaah, the envy...😭😄
@@mihmnop ye luuuucky basterd! I😭😂 can barely remember the taste, it's been almost 5 years from my last visit! I've got to come back ASAP!!!!! Famichicken + nikuman + pocari was my designated lunch set while I lived there!
@@mihmnop aaaah fuck! I had sorta forgotten about them limited special items! Even McD's had some excellent shit!! *not always lol I also miss a lot Saizeriya, Ikinari Steak and my fav of all, Coco Ichibanya! What's your number one place to eat?
I played most Ys now, and I certainly agree with the most of this list. I went into Ys 1-2 expecting it to be a slog with weird combat, only for it to become my absolute favorite in the series. I even liked Kefin.
Yeah I liked kefin for what it was. It's underwhelming, but it's not bad and it's a short game. If you love 1 and 2 i definitely think you should check out the DS versions if you haven't!
@@mihmnop I could clearly see the restrictions of the platform, but the story had similar charm, and I purposefully played it before Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, which made me appreciate it even more. I will definitely check out the DS versions, thanks!
Always great to see videos from passionate Ys fans. I also started with Origin, but finished it after Chronicles. Overall I like the Napishtim games the best. Your thoughts about Felghana are very similar to mine and I would also rank it on 2nd place. Still need to finish the TurboGrafx games at some point, especially IV.
Ooh, so if Felghana is also 2nd, which would be 1st for you? And yeah, if you only go backwards and play one game, IV: Dawn of Ys is definitely the one to do.
@@mihmnop Overall Ys VIII is my favorite, best party based Ys so far. The gameplay improved so much after Celceta, the premise is great and I think that it has the best soundtrack overall. Except Dana I do prefer the party of IX, though. Let's see how Ys X will turn out, the greater emphasis on story, characters and NPC dialogue in IX wasn't what I'm looking for in an Ys game, it felt more more like Trails in the city.
@@firebreather4192 yeah 8s soundtrack definitely has some of the greatest songs. iclucian dance is my fav. the music is the hardest part to compare though because they all slap haha I get what you mean about trails in the city lol. I'm just a sucker for small references. It feels like I'm part of the in-home.
Oh lord you described my life experience with this game!!! I had a NES as a kid and one of my best friends got the turbo grafix CD add on and Ys... he literally called me over and the next day I was there after school to see this game and it crushed me not to be able to see and hear it when i went home... I eventually got my own durboduo and got it myself and have loved it ever since xD
Maybe I'm just a newcomer in this series, but my 1st game is Ys8 and from that moment I became to love this game. And honestly Dana is 1 of my most favorite female protagonists in all the series. But moving on for the story, I prefer Ys7 because of the plot twist and how its playing with my feelings when you following the story deeply. And dang maybe sorry for a bit spoiler, it's blow my mind when I realized that the main antagonist is right in there the first time you met him/her from the start. That's why I love this series and still waiting for the next Adol's adventures
I have I, II Chronicles+, Origin, The Oath of Falghana, and The Ark of Napishtim, on Steam, I only tried playing I but then the Trails in the Sky series drew me in so I havent played Y's in years, I may pick them back up
If you loved Sky you'll probably enjoy playing Napishtim, Felghana and Origin. They're not exactly the same engine but they're similar which means they look like each other. I played Ys first and then Trails in the Sky and I loved how familiar the graphics felt
I’m currently playing Origin as my first game and really enjoying it a lot. I have 8 and 9 owned and look forward to the other Napishtim titles and maybe even 4 and 7…I could see myself playing most all of them other than 1-3 and 5.
I did not discover YS Until about 2013 to 2014 when I got a PlayStation vita and memories of Celcetta! It quickly became one of my all-time favorite games that I went on to Platinum in two playthroughs and because of which I have went on to play as many of them as I can mostly all the ones on PlayStation consoles!! “Do you know the name Adol Christin?” Yes!! Yes I do!!
The psp was a great Ys machine. I hope they port more of the older ones onto the PS4/5 too! The switch is becoming the new home for older Ys games -- it's getting three games ported to it this year starting with Felghana
I like it, but its quite a bit longer than every other game in the series. If you like other 50+ hour jrpgs, you probably won't have a problem. It's most peoples favourite game in the series.
Dont normally comment on older videos but I love Ys, I first played Snes wanderers from ys, when I found out that it was being remade I pre-ordered the psp game special edition. I'm glad I did because to this day it is one of my top favorite soundtracks ever made. My only gripe is my fav song in the Snes version is the shop music, and they did a great job updating it, but it's not on the dang cd lol. My fav Ys game though is 8, I have played through it 6 times now, and it's one of my top 5 all time favorite games. The deep layered story was so mind blowing to me, and I remember the first time I played it I was upset at how slow people were at looking for people lol. I had a genuine emotional ride in that game. I also love the fast paced hack and slash battle style. Got so good at movement tech, I thought about learning to speed run it, but I love the story too much to skip it lol
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, at least the first entry of the Xak series, another JRPG series from around the same time Ys came out, also used a variation of "bump combat".
This video is a great game seller, i am growing tired of multiplayer, perhaps, after years of finding offline games boring, it’s time to reignite the old flame of jrpg
for the the list would be quite different. 1. Oath in Felghana: This game embodies to me what makes an Ys game should be, amazingly fun combat, GREAT bosses , fantastic music and good story to boot. 2. Ys origins/ Ys8 Lacrimosha of Dana. Im cheating here but i legit cannot choose between them. Origins had such an amazing combat that was perfectly optimized with the much needed story and world background for the series. Dana on other hand not only became way more accessible to the newer fans in the series but also had one of the best explorations i ever enjoyed in YS games, absolutely fantastic, loved the Greek mythos and Islands along with fantastic interchange between Dana and Adol. Both have amazing music ( duh is Falcom) 3. See Above. 4. Ys seven: Not only it was the first 3d Ys game of the series but it was the in my opinion the game where Adol was the most badass is all of his books so far. The amount of challenges he overcomes under crazy circumstances makes Dana fight a walk in the park and Adol established himself further as the Red Haired Badass that even gods tremble before him. Love the music, combat needs to get used it but its still fun and the story actually got a nice twist. 5. Ys chronicles : what can i saw about the classic , Feena? Reah ? ... check. You want Dark Fact and one of the most memorable bosses? check. Music? we really gonna talk about music when the first ever dungeon of the series and the game is 'Palace of Destruction " ? Love the series for ages now, the only game that hasnt caught my attention so far is ys 9, i just cant get into this claustrophobic location it has which feels to limit the essence of adventure that other YS bring. Combat is still there its just for me the locale story didn't captivate and thats fine because its still a damn reserving name of an YS game. Thanks for your list
About Dawn of Ys… even when the game was released, it never truly had the status of canon game. That's because there are certain story changes that even back then clashed with the canon.
I've only played through ys 1 (hard) and am currently going through Ys 2 (nightmare) and I do love these games! Also Feena or Lillia without ys 2 spoilers. Currently i'm on the draw bridge volcano escort the son part and am on my way to freeze him and then take his measurements... the same way I did to Feena. Which game should I play after them? Should I play origin or 3 and should I play the latest versions/remakes or original?
Nice! Nightmare can be rough, but 2 is easier to do it on than 1. good luck! If you're liking the characters and the world of ys 1 and 2, I'd say go to Origins next. The fresher 1 and 2 are in your mind, the more you'll recognise. And I would recommend the Oath to Felghana remake of 3 -- the original story is still there it's just better now and connects to the other games more! Also check out Ys IV: Dawn of Ys on an emulator--if you're loving 1 and 2 you'll enjoy Dawn of Ys, it takes place after 2
Great video, it's pretty clear that you really have played and mostly love all of the Ys games :). My top 3 without any particular order would be somewhat different though: Oath of Felghana, Origin and Lacrimosa of Dana. I started playing Dawn of Ys and IX is pending after that. Personally, I didn't like much the dungeon design from Ys II, as it became pretty unintuitive at some point. I did play Origin before Ys I&II, so that was cool. History wise, I really enjoyed Seven and Lacrimosa of Dana. Still, I don't like too much the combat in the new games as it's somewhat unbalanced (just buy lots of potions/herbs). I think that playing in nightmare limits that somewhat, but the normal enemies (in VIII at least) took like 1/3 of your health per hit in nightmare and it felt just annoying. Not sure if you have some thoughts there. As my proudest achievement, I did beat Oath of Felghana in Inferno difficulty (though I didn't beat the optional bosses :( ).
Oh wow, I'm yet to do Inferno on Felghana, haha. Well done. I've only done nightmare. I agree with the modern games being unbalanced... Even nightmare doesn't feel very hard--it's a chore early and then it's easy late-game. I think that's just a biproduct of them making the games 50+ hours long: there's a focus on exploration and levelling which gives you an enormous skillset and inventory that makes managing enemies much easier. I think that's why I preferred 9 over 8, because on top of the button mashing, there's also a range of movement abilities that you can mix into the combat to make it look flashy.
@@arishkhan-jw6qu Ys 4 - Dawn of Ys for the PC Engine Duo/Turbografx16 CD via Mednafen over Mednaffe (yes that's a real term, you understand what's going on when you get to it). After that Ys 3 - Oath in Felghana, followed by Ys 6 - Ark of Napisthim.
I started playing these games last year. I tried Ys 1 first, but I sucked and then left it alone for months. Then I played Ys 8, loved it and and finished it. I then spent the days at my dads last Christmas playing Ys 1 and 2. I beat the final boss of Ys 1 on my second attempt. Through sheer dumb luck. I played on easy, because I don't care about challenge. I get my ass handed to me on the easiest difficulty already. I just want to have fun. I then started Cold Steel 1 again and finished that game. Now I played 2 runs of Ys Origin and am now on break while I play Cold Steel 2. And Harvestella. Ys is great so far, I loved every game I played. I just don't really like the endings much. They are all so sad! Is every game depressing? But they are still great games. Falcom is making me poor. I have bought every single Ys game, ready to play them once I get around to it. They are just that good! It just kinda sucked trying to find a physical copy of Ys 8. Those copies were really hard to come by. But yeah, Ys is great. And it is kinda funny to think about Adol only saving the world so he can write something cool in his journal.
Haha, yeah most games have a kind of bittersweet ending--there's at least something to be happy about. But they never force a "All Lived Happily Ever After" ending which I like. I still need to get through the rest of the Trails saga myself, I've only done the Sky trilogy so far!
I bought Ys chronicles + before the end of the video so congrtulation. Now I want to do I from 9, already bought the 8 because everybody was going nuts about this one, can you tell why you didn't put it in your list. I also read that you(ve got to play Origin after playin some of the first episode to understand references and finaly what about Ys 3, don't ssee myself going from 2 to 4 cause it's not on the list so is there a peculiar version to play. Thanks I needed this video.
I still love 8, it's just that I ended up loving others more. The only place I fault it is it's got a slow start -- lots of dialogue early and not enough sword swinging. And there's these tower defence style parts that get a bit tiring. 9 also has a slow start and tower defence parts, but those parts in 9 had more variety. Ys Origin can definitely be enjoyed by itself -- you'll understand what's happening in the story. but if you play it after 1 and 2, you'll understand more of /why/ what's happening and you'll recognise names and locations. Ys Origin has three playthroughs though, you could definitely start with Origin, then play 1 and 2, and later on in the future if you enjoyed Origin, play it again with a different character. And for a first time playing through the series, 3 is easily replaced with Oath in Felghana. Felghana is an amazing remake of 3 and the whole story is still there, the whole game is just better overall. I only recommend the original version of Ys 3 if you've already finished other Ys games and want to experience where it came from (if you do this, play the Turbografx version)
@@mihmnop Thank you very much for you time. I'm playing Trails and Falcom have something special like (in a very different way and that's the point) Atlus. I'm not into FF or DQ I'm not snobish just not my thing and apart from Yoko Taro games Square Enix don't click with me.
Ys > Final Fantasy and oh man I could not disagree more with your list. Lol. Your favorites are the ones I like the very least. I also hated the solo games and prefer the party combat by far. It's funny how two people can love the same series for completely different reasons.
Same. I do like the bump ones tho. Felghana to me is the worst of the Napishtim engine, I didn't like 7 at all, it felt like it dragged a lot and the gameplay was tedious (getting SP sucks). My own top 5 would prob be: Lacrimosa, Origin, Monstrum, Ark, Ys 1 (minus Dark Fact lol)
My list: 1. Memories of Celceta (Ps Vita or PS4) 2: Ys 3: Oath in Felgaha (PSP & PC version) 3: Ys 8 4: Ys Origin 5. Ys 6 But I didn't play Ys 9 yet. Nor did I play the DS or remakes of 1&2... Tho I did finish every single version of Ys 3 (except PC and PC88, those I only started) and I disagree with your opinion that the TGX version is best. I would probably rank the Mega Drive version highest of the side-scrolling ones. It doesn't have the best music, but it plays the best (save and load works best). Easiest to get through. But the X68K version has the best soundtrack. While the PC-Engine sounds the best. I didn't play the one you rank best, but I'd prefer games I have to hit a button to deal damage to the enemy, rather than running straight into them. I will get to playing it some day tho.
Interesting list! Thanks for sharing I can agree that the sega version plays better but no matter what version i think it's just average so the funny voice acting makes the Turbografx my fav. If you've played that much Ys, you've gotta at least give 1 and 2 a try. The bump is amazing fun and so unique. But if you hate it, the DS version has a sword button and plays more like a top down zelda game -- try emulating that. It's worth it to see where the series came from!
I started with The Ark of Napishtim back on the PS2 so I'm biased towards the 3 games in that engine. My top 5 : 1.Ys Origin 2.Ys: The Oath in Felghana 3.Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim 4.Ys IX 5.Ys VIII (On some days Ys Seven is in this spot) I can't wait to finally play Ys X later this year!
IMho YS Memories of Celcetta is a lot better than most give it credit for?! In YS Lacramosa of Dana they watered down the weapon upgrade system as well as the games Pacing isn’t as smooth.. In Celcetta you had to Have an exact formula for Maxing out a weapon or armor, or Use a Sun Stone, of which there were only 2 per play through.. don’t get me wrong, I really like Lacramosa of Dana, I just think some things weren’t as Sophisticated as they were in the previous entry. I also might be more nostalgic for memories of Celcetta due to the fact that it was the first game I got into on my PS Vita? But either way I disagree with every TH-camr that says “it’s just OK” because the game was a blast from start to finish and there was never a moment where you felt lost or couldn’t figure out how to get to where you were going or figure out how to complete a quest like in the game that followed, thus breaking up the Momentum of the gameplay! All in all though I love them both and really enjoyed the E-series as a whole
Remember "OK" is said within the scale of Ys. An OK ys game is a very good game. I wasn't a fan of the upgrade system because it made the game laughably easy, it was a game about exploration but like you said you never really get lost or don't know where to go so it didn't feel like exploring and filling out the map was a nuisance running into invisible walls to fill out the last little pixels. I had fun with the game, but there's nothing that celceta did that hasn't been done better by other Ys games
@@mihmnop yeah on that note I guess you’re right! With Lacrimosa of Danna I have spent a lot more time trying to figure out how to fill out portions of the map as well as know when I can mess with some enemies and when I need to hi tail it out of there!! But in that I have been aggravated somewhat where I wasn’t aggravated in memories.. Overall looking at it that way, yes memories of Cellcetta a lot easier.. But man when you made a maxed out weapon you felt bad ass and powerful?! I’ve not felt bad ass and powerful not once in Lacrimosa of Dana and that’s considering I’ve maxed out all the weapons at the moment those upgrades became available, and I was still getting thrashed by certain enemies but I guess that’s a good thing because it does increase the length of the game and it keeps you on your toes! Either way I’m glad to have discovered YS In the first place and if it were not for memories, I never would’ve discovered that it was a game series I really adored!!
@@turismofoegaming8806 Ah okay, I get that! I love feeling like a god in late game and Celceta definitely lets you do that. I guess it's the most JRPG-feeling in that regard
I also played the pc fan translation of naphistim, felghana and i figli d gaucci's translation of ys origin and xanadu next on my potato dual core pc in 2008- 2010. Hope they re release xanandu next.
literally had no idea ys x was coming out this year until this video, i'm gonna cry, i'm excited!! we probably won't get it in the west till next year, but i can wait with bated breath. ys seven is a biased favorite of mine for two reasons: spite and because it was my first. second is self explanatory and the first...someone stole my copy with my psp when i was in high school and i never let it go. i haven't finished ys II yet (hopefully this year ooph) and i haven't played oath, origins, or 8 as of yet. they're all titles i plan to play later this year though, i might wait on oath so i can play the switch port... it's really funny about the bump combat tho, because i always call it the bumper car battle system lol it is fun when you sort of figure out what you're doing. i am curious about the dislike for celceta. xD i'm not familiar with the community's thoughts on that one, even though i personally enjoyed it. ...I did play it on ps4 though so idk if there's any major differences between the vita and ps4 versions. is there a fan translation for ys v yet? i haven't been able to find one but i might just be looking in the wrong places : (
Celceta is fun, just when you're comparing gold with gold, you gotta look for flaws and Celceta has more. The main two is that it's exploration focused, but areas are quite linear and filling out the map is a pain having to run against the edge of every map to get the last 0.1%. And the weapon upgrade system is busted and makes the game super easy. There's a fan translation for V yeah. I don't know the legality of all that stuff so I won't link it just in case but it definitely exists!! The Aeon Genesis team did it.
Actually makes me sad you call Seven's combat the weakest party game one. It's much better feeling than Celceta's at least imo (except for maybe Karna's combat who I absolutely love). Nice to see you rank it highly otherwise though (as well as Celceta that low lol, wasn't an amazing Ys game). Nice to know it's not just me who ranks 8 that low btw. Neat list. My personal top 3 in any order are Seven, 9 and Oath. Out of interest though, where would 10 rank if you've played that yet (it's probably just above Celceta for me)?
I can respect Seven being in top place! It has a certain charm that other modern ones lack. I'd put 10 just under Celceta. at least you can finish Celceta in under 30 hours and it doesn't have a crappy boat section. The shake up to the combat was nice for the first few hours but it didn't develop at all after that. The boat stuff just absolutely killed it for me.
@@mihmnop Understandable. Based take, honestly. Though the story and characters in 10 just clear Celceta's imo (though Celceta's characters are good). I actually like 10 quite a bit but the glaring flaws just prevent me from putting it up there with the big boys. Aside from what you mentioned, I absolutely hate shield health bars, the exploration isn't nearly as good as 8 or 9, and the fact that max affinity events aren't fully voiced this time round. Have other nitpicks, but... yeah. Could've used some more time in the oven tbh. Not a bad game mind you, just on the "mid" scale for an Ys game.
I'm like 18 minutes into your video and I figured it'd be brought up considering how you talked about it. But Dawn of YS was always going to be retconned. They had already ignored two of falcom's specific guidelines regarding what they had already put together for the timeline as it was as well as its ending. I personally don't really like any version of ys four for one reason or another, and I would say Don is the best one. But as somebody who does really care about the overarching plot and has also played every game in the franchise, The ending and misplaced in the timeline is what really holds it back for me. And the reason memories of celceta ultimately is closer to mask of the Sun even though mask of the Sun is by far the worse game, is because they stayed closer to falcom's guidelines Anyway now that I finished the video I can understand each and every placement you've made. While it's not how I would rank them personally, mine would look very different, is a good list
Oh yeah I can definitely understand that! I'm a sucker for simple in your face references and throwbacks and stuff so I fell in love with how Dawn of Ys takes us back to see Lilia and so on. I can forgive the ending and misplacement because of how much fun I had with the game.
After Dawn of Ys release, Falcom started to shop around for someone to make an anime series or OVA. They had a teaser trailer made back in the day, so it's possible that Dawn was originally considered cannon. The thing that stands out in that game to me, is the fact that a certain character died in the original Ys 1, but in the PC Engine version, that particular person survived and was also in Dawn of Ys. Also, IIRC, the final boss was completely made up in Dawn. Oh, and speaking of Dawn, I was the voice actor for the narrator and Dr. Flair. My ex-wife was Lilia. One bummer is that they sped up my narration to fit the 3 scenes. Kind of wish he would've asked me to re-record my lines. I wad aiming to do my best to sound like Alan Oppenheimer who narrated Ys 1 and 2. My Dr Flair I kind of based on Mayor Grady from Ys 3. I'm also banned that characters are inconsistent in pronouncing Adol's name. I still haven't gotten around to beating it in English. I've only beat Dawn in Japanese.
@@ParanoiaDragon well the background stuff you And people around you were involved in here is really interesting I can assure you with 100% confidence Dawn was never going to be considered cannon. For starters falcom considered mask of the Sun to be cannon despite the fact that it was the worse game, And they did so because they stuck closer to the outline that was given to them. Hence why memories of celceta takes more for mask of the Sun. And seeing how even then there wasn't really any plans to stop making Ys, you don't exactly put a definitive ending on a series which is what Dawn did and that wasn't in the outline. The only reason falcom was outsourcing at this time is because they had a lot of their staff poached by rival companies
@@ExalinExcels Found a link to the Dawn trailer th-cam.com/video/yI3BGVkSEN8/w-d-xo.html Too bad it fell thru. Not sure why they made Lilia's hair brown in that trailer, and Dogi's hair looks too dark, like it was black rather than blue. Yeah, like I said Dawn definitely conflicts with the official story at least twice, if not more. It's a shame. Too many liberties on Hudson's part. I didn't notice it mentioned, but there were 2 other Ys 4 games. One for Mega CD that apparently got cancelled(I believe called Mask of the Sun), and then Mask of the Sun: A New Theory for PS2. I did beat that game, and I'll say I like the original MotS better. I do wonder how close the story is to the SFC game. I doubt anyone would ever want to hack A New Theory to translate it. Also wonder how the Mega CD game would've been, but I've always been a Turbo fan boy, so part of me is glad it didn't come out, only because I love the Turbo. Still, it'd be nice if there was a prototype to check out.
@@ParanoiaDragon Yo!!! You did voices for the fandub?? That's incredible! I loved it! And I think the inconsistency of "ah-dol" "aye-dol" just makes it more fun as a fandub! And yeah, I get why it's not canon but I kind of love the liberties that Hudson took. Thanks so much for commenting, and thanks for your work on the Dawn dub!
yeah, i think so. gameplay wise it's definitely better. but like i said, 9 relies on fanservice so i get that people felt burned out on 9's story. 8 is a lot easier to get invested into the characters.
And not only the characters, I liked the 8th part more, there is a sense of adventure there. Therefore, I am really looking forward to the new part on the PC@@mihmnop
i've almost finished the new game, Ys X. if you liked 8, you'll definitely like this one. hopefully it doesn't take too long to get translated!@@VanzerKlain
Yeah, I dunno. I think I'm pretty happy as it is with at least a few years lag between the Japanese and Global releases. It means the games will be made for Japanese audiences, like they traditionally have, and then localized later. Having them release day and date across the globe means that they will be created for global audiences - losing much of the uniquely Japanese charm that's been stripped out of so many JRPG franchises over the last 15+ years. I grew up with JRPGs from the Sega Master system, through the PSX, to today's all-too-often abominations which are close to unplayable for me. Can we have just a few franchises that stay Japanese? Would that really be so bad?
you showed iisu in katakana on the screen then proceeded to say iis most of the video. I prefer 'Ys' to 'iis', but if you said 'iisu' i'd be fine with that too. chopping off the vowel at the end could happen in japanese language sometimes but it's not the more common outcome and even if it were, there's usually still a hint of the vowel, like there might be a hint of the second b in the word bomb.
@@iNsOmNiAcAnDrEw Exactly, I was speaking English--not Japanese. Why would I awkwardly break up my sentence by saying iisu? When I'm talking in English about something Japanese I don't say "yeah, my favourite _karubii_ _poteto chippusu_ flavour is _piza_ "
I first played Y's Origins, and in the process of learning some about the game, I came to my attention that apparently unlocking all the stuff required beating nightmare once with each character, or all other difficulties once each or something like that (Someone said the unlockables were a later release used to pad the lenght of the game, which in hindsight should have been a warning sign of how much of a rushed job this was), so I thougth it was a good enough excuse to go with Nightmare and "git gud" along the way; and man, that game was a trash experience. I expect a game at it's maximum dificulty to kick your ass with overpowered enemies, but the geniuses at Falcom decided the best way to up the difficulty was not only to increase enemy numbers and reduce player exp (which is all pretty pointless and merely inflates the time spent grinding, as a single level up in that game is a massive upgrade), but also increase enemy move speed, which had the issue of making animations not lining up with hitboxs and often resulted in getting hit by an attack that had already gone by. I have like 2 other games from the series that I de-prioritized to hell, because apparently that thing was top 4 in the series. And "Character focused story"? Dude, the stories of 2 of the playable characters don't even matter because they didn't actually happen. It's not different perspectives of the same story, the paths contradict each other and the secret character's path is confirmed to be the real one. Hope you didn't like Yunika in particular, as her individual path has her capabilities and characterization be in direct contradiction with how she's depicted in the other two routes, and that's when the other routes remember she exists.
Yeah, the achievements are bullshit. The game wasn't made with achievements in mind, its just some arbitrary shit that got shoved into the Steam/Console versions. Falcom didn't do that. Also, it's called "nightmare". You willingly clicked on nightmare and didn't expect a nightmare? It's a dumb challenge mode where they just ramp the dials up on everything for dumbasses like me that can't get enough of the game. Lastly, I didn't say different perspectives of the same story. I said the character you choose takes the initiative in the story and each leads to a different ending. Of course Yunica contradicts herself in other playthroughs when you're not playing as her--the character you choose becomes the protagonist.
@@mihmnop As I said, I expected the game to kick my ass in nightmare, and learn from it to improve. The thing I had to learn the most, through, is when the game considers an attack is done versus when it's visually done, because no one cared to re-aling the hitboxes to the faster animations. Suffice to say, the secret character breaking the seal at the start of the game required grinding a level and having a specific setup by arriving to the room at very low health, all because none of the programmers considered that making the health of the enemies holding together the seal scale with difficulty was a bad idea. And it's not even that the game expected this to be an issue or intentionally made it that way, since the quote for failing is not "I need to be faster", but rather "oh, silly me, I forgot to burst". That's the level of carelessness and/or rush job that went into it.
@@cursedex80 @cursedex yeah that's fair, the 4 statues part is kinda bullshit. but it's easy to work around by just running in and out and doing one statue at a time and waiting for boost. i can forgive that though because im the one that clicked nightmare. I like getting through it to get to the boss fights which are all different on nightmare -- more projectiles, homing attacks track you faster, more additional things spawn, etc. The game is challenging enough on normal. If there's any part of the game you liked, I'd say just play the other two games you have on normal (especially if they're Felghana and Napishtim). Nightmare is quite literally a nightmare until about Ys Seven and beyond (modern games are much easier). But you also don't have to like it. If you're getting pressed over the attack animations, you might just not have the patience to put up with a few oversights in design of a challenge mode for obsessed fans of an old niche jrpg series made by a small team of people. It just seems unfair to me to shit on a game based on it's made-for-fans ultra difficult mode. Especially when the parts you're complaining about are obstacles you can learn and adjust to overcome. In all seriousness, I never had an issue with the attack animations not lining up.
@@mihmnop I don't think you're understanding my point. I don't want "easier" nightmare; but rather it to be handcrafted, something that was actually thought over and designed for that challenge. The hitbox issue should not be happening in a well through experience, as someone in QA should have seen that, for example, maybe Epona shouldn't really be hitting the player while immobile and with her back turned after dashing; and every other hurdle presented by that mode is just a numbers issue that can be even out by putting more time in grinding to cancel the exp penalty (though doing so is just a drag). The same boss you struggle against at lvl 20, can be handled rather easily at lvl 21.
@@cursedex80 I don't think you're understanding the game. Normal is handcrafted, something that was actually thought over and designed for a challenge. Yes, the exp penalty is painful and arbitrary--some might call it nightmarish. This is a series that has a super secret boss that you literally can't damage until grinding to a point where each enemy kill is giving you 1 single xp (Ys 6). It's a joke. It's a funny ha-ha thing that the developers put in the game to see if anyone is silly enough to do it. If you don't like the game, just don't like the game. It's like you've gone into a restaurant and ordered the WARNING: LEVEL 10 SUPER SPICE CHALLENGE and then complained that the restaurant sucks because it's so spicy that you can't taste the food. I can point out flaws with Ys Origin. Hugo sucks to play as compared to the other two characters. Having to play through the game three times to see the true ending is dumb--there aren't enough gameplay differences between each playthrough to make it worthwhile. Unskippable cutscenes is a massive oversight in a game as short as this--especially because there are multiple difficulty levels and you might want to play as the same character... but basing the game on it's ridiculous, dials-up-to-11 _Nightmare_ mode seems like the most unfair nitpick. You just described pretty much every game that lets you level up. The boss fight gets easier if you get another level on your character. I don't get your point with that one. Also, all of Epona's dashes light up with a magical bright blue effect, starting from behind her. Touching that shit probably hurts.
Granted, I never played them, but Ys I&II are very outdated in my opinion, especially the story presentation. I always see Ys XIII is the golden standard of Ys games that future games should strive for. It has fast-paced combat, great cast of character, great exploration and one of the best story for the series. Even Adol at that game feel like a character, rather than just silent protagonist. That's why I want Falcom to remake Ys I&II with story presentation and progression of newer Ys games.
@@sanane66543 I think 8 definitely does world exploration the best of all. but i like Seven's story better, and Origins characters better. It just comes down to how we weigh things up ourselves. I ended up liking 9 more than 8 because of how much more connected to the other games it felt--that combined with the fun of the movement abilities outweighs the world exploration of 8 for me. But I completely understand 8 being your fav. There's no wrong answers and I love talking about it, so thanks for commenting!
The dvd loading screen gave me ptsd of my nightmare run xD Great video btw!!
It's SUCH a funny fight. I love it.
This was a nice video. Glad I found it. So far I've played Felghana, Celceta, Origin, Wanderers, and Chronicles Plus, and I love them all.
Saw this video randomly in my recommendations, and hey - this is really really good!
Ys has always been a franchise I was curious about from the outside but I'm yet to play any of them. This was a great introduction, thanks so much for making this!
You've got a very fun journey ahead of you!

Oath in Felghana is a great starting point! They go on sale often, too, so if you like it make sure to check back around the Summer sale or whenever!
Oath is actually my favorite. Followed by Ark, Origins, 7 and Celceta.
Amazing video, sir!
Just got my first Ys game " Origin " looking forward to playing it. ARPG's and Platformers are my types of games and this one looks great.
Ooh nice, origin is a very fast paced arpg with platforming elements!! You're in for a treat! Hope you enjoy it
Great video! Also you read my mind, I was expecting to see Ys 8 in the top 5. But at the same time not seeing it there made it more interesting to watch since it felt like a fresh perspective ^^
Damn I think I am in love with the voice of this Ys legend
Excellent video!
I played one of the first Ys games on my Tandy computer way back in the day LOL! Haven't played any since. I'll have to check them out.
Oh wow! An OG Ys player! If you have fond memories of it you should definitely revisit Ys 1 and 2 with the Chronicles version!!
When Ys 1 and 2 were top I cheered loudly. At work.
Ys 8 got me into the series
I'm glad 8 did so well, I know a lot of people who started with 8.
I hope when 10 comes out it can capture more new players!

I didn't discover the Y's series till 2022. I just beat The Oath in Felghana and now started both Origins and The Ark of Nipishtim. Good times

Final Fantasy 4 and Pokémon red both have a developer room FYI. Great video I’m finally getting into the series with Ys 8.
Ooh, I'm yet to play FF4, I'll have to bump that up my backlog. Thanks!

Your thoughts about Felghana are very similar to mine and I would also rank it on 2nd place. Still need to finish the TurboGrafx games at some point, especially IV.

@@mihmnop Overall Ys VIII is my favorite, best party based Ys so far. The gameplay improved so much after Celceta, the premise is great and I think that it has the best soundtrack overall.
I love that 8 did so well compared to other games that it's brought in a lot of new fans! I can't wait for Ys X too!
I’m about to go play YS1 & YS2 right now!! I didn’t even realize I had it in my PSVita!!!

2:40 Pretty sure Hydelide came first, but I didn’t know that for a while.
“Do you know the name Adol Christin?”
Yes!! Yes I do!!
The psp was a great Ys machine. I hope they port more of the older ones onto the PS4/5 too! The switch is becoming the new home for older Ys games -- it's getting three games ported to it this year starting with Felghana
Whats your opinion on Ys 8? Never played it and it looks like the best way to start
I always wondered what kind of games would have this franchise... They seem fun, I'll give it a try to chronicles+ some day

Can’t believe Typing of Ys didn’t make it on this list. I’m so disappointed
I needed to give the other games a chance. Typing is obviously the best.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, at least the first entry of the Xak series, another JRPG series from around the same time Ys came out, also used a variation of "bump combat".
Great vid, makes me want to give Ys a chance again. I tried Origins but didn’t finish it.
Top is YS 2 always!
Ooooh! We're a rare breed! Nice to meet you
This video is a great game seller, i am growing tired of multiplayer, perhaps, after years of finding offline games boring, it’s time to reignite the old flame of jrpg
My first ys game was on the psp. 🔥🔥🔥
nice video i need to play one of em. almost sold a kidney for a turbo duo back in 98 to play them
for the the list would be quite different.
Both have amazing music ( duh is Falcom)
3. See Above.
Hydlide also uses a bump combat mechanic
Man's said KASLHICK
Also check out Ys IV: Dawn of Ys on an emulator--if you're loving 1 and 2 you'll enjoy Dawn of Ys, it takes place after 2
@@mihmnop Can you recommend me other games too? I really enjoy your taste in them
Great video, it's pretty clear that you really have played and mostly love all of the Ys games :).
DARK FACT TOOK ME FOREVER AT 60 FPS HARD MODE! how does nightmare compare?
It's... something.

Oh I've already played the best Ys games, so i guess there is no point of going back and playing the lesser ones
Oh shit I didn't think this through...
... The more Ys you play, the more you retroactively enjoy Ys I and II
@@mihmnopit's true
There are no lesser Ys games.
@@mihmnop Need to do Crossbell and Erebonia arcs!

I see you like the party-based Ys games most!
i like this video i wil now play ys
Finally
Ys > Final Fantasy and oh man I could not disagree more with your list. Lol. Your favorites are the ones I like the very least. I also hated the solo games and prefer the party combat by far. It's funny how two people can love the same series for completely different reasons.
I love them all but when comparing them, the party based games are too long and too easy.
My list:
1. Memories of Celceta (Ps Vita or PS4)
2: Ys 3: Oath in Felgaha (PSP & PC version)
3: Ys 8
4: Ys Origin
5. Ys 6
But I didn't play Ys 9 yet.
Thanks for sharing
I can agree that the sega version plays better but no matter what version i think it's just average so the funny voice acting makes the Turbografx my fav.
My top 5 :
1.Ys Origin
2.Ys: The Oath in Felghana
3.Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim
4.Ys IX
5.Ys VIII (On some days Ys Seven is in this spot)
I can't wait to finally play Ys X later this year!

Have to disagree on Ys Memories of Celceta. That's my introduction to the series and the one that made me fall in love with the games. (:

literally had no idea ys x was coming out this year until this video, i'm gonna cry, i'm excited!! we probably won't get it in the west till next year, but i can wait with bated breath.
ys seven is a biased favorite of mine for two reasons: spite and because it was my first. second is self explanatory and the first...someone stole my copy with my psp when i was in high school and i never let it go.
i haven't finished ys II yet (hopefully this year ooph) and i haven't played oath, origins, or 8 as of yet. they're all titles i plan to play later this year though, i might wait on oath so i can play the switch port... it's really funny about the bump combat tho, because i always call it the bumper car battle system lol it is fun when you sort of figure out what you're doing. i am curious about the dislike for celceta. xD i'm not familiar with the community's thoughts on that one, even though i personally enjoyed it.
...I did play it on ps4 though so idk if there's any major differences between the vita and ps4 versions.
is there a fan translation for ys v yet? i haven't been able to find one but i might just be looking in the wrong places : (
Celceta is fun, just when you're comparing gold with gold, you gotta look for flaws and Celceta has more.

I am positive that i want to nuzzle Nussy

I just wish i could play ys4,oath,and ys 1 and 2. Theyre impossible to get
Are you talking about physical copies?
oooohh im bouta make a rant video on this game
Next time You can put the console names are they ys games
I must admit YS 1 and 2 has the best ost, and top 3 story. but combat wasnt my cup of tea.
And the reason memories of celceta ultimately is closer to mask of the Sun even though mask of the Sun is by far the worse game, is because they stayed closer to falcom's guidelines
Anyway now that I finished the video I can understand each and every placement you've made.
@@ExalinExcels Found a link to the Dawn trailer th-cam.com/video/yI3BGVkSEN8/w-d-xo.html
Too bad it fell thru.

Thanks so much for commenting, and thanks for your work on the Dawn dub!
Seriously? Is Nox better than Lacrimose?
yeah, i think so. gameplay wise it's definitely better. but like i said, 9 relies on fanservice so i get that people felt burned out on 9's story. 8 is a lot easier to get invested into the characters.

Hallelujah, our god has graced us with this video
"Ys" isn't Japanese though.

My first one was ark of napishtim on psp. Bad port by konami.
I've only played the XSEED port actually so I'm not too familiar. Do you think it's bad in a way that's worth experiencing? Funny bad or just Bad bad?
@@mihmnop It has really bad framerate, and you will get the idea that it is a bad port because oath in felghana psp runs well.

A great video, maybe remove the profanity, it’s not needed in the overall rather intellectual review and reasoning you put forth
Nah leave your personality in your videos
Ys 8 is best no contest
I think there definitely is a contest, which is what makes this such a good series--they've made so many good games
@@mihmnop true but comeon the charac, world exploration, story etc in 8 imo is a masterpiece and a bit better then the rest especially 9
@@mihmnop deff we can all agree on 1 thing do that almost all ys games sre great
Nah i refuse to get into this trash heap
lol what's put you off of them
