  • We return to Ys yet again. This time going back to the sea of trees, the great forest of Celceta, looking at Falcom's own confused official retelling of the Adol's adventures searching for gold and dodging Eldeel. It's the third Ys IV review, with Ys Memories of Celceta.

    Now that I think about it, maybe Adol's amnesia is a reference to Ys IV being remade.
    Because two versions of Ys IV already exist, meaning Adol has technically explored Celceta before.

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think that's what they try to go for, in a way that only makes matters worse in-story. The memories of you get of Dogi being there in-game are actually scenes from Dawn of Ys. The problem is that Adol actually leaves Celceta for a bit in Dawn, goes back to Esteria, then comes back. And Dogi still shows up after those scenes, because he figures that Adol for sure will get in trouble.
      This then also plays a lot nicer with Adol and Dogi still traveling together after Ys 4, because Ys 3 takes place after it. They mention Adol and Dogi traveled a bunch together after what happened in Ys 2, and Ys 4 is that gap.

    The Dogi segment is always gold.

      Ironically its that recurring segment that made me finally take the plunge into the franchise. It showed a level of character, charm and consistent vision that won me over

    If you give Karna Knives a bit of Absorption and SP gain you can sweep away practically any enemy in the game.

    I know I'm 3 years late and you're probably over it, but I'm so happy to see your take on Memories vs. Dawn of Ys. I played most of these games in 2017 and 2018 and I have always been adamant about Dawn of Ys being my canon Ys IV.
    What you mention about Eldeel, how he is in Dawn of Ys and all the connections Dawn has to Ys Book 1 & 2 are so important. His connections to the goddesses and the black pearl being a major story element in both games and more.
    Memories the remake just slaughters all of that, and offers nothing in return, and now the fanbase seems to be in full agreement that it is the canon Ys IV. Most fans have also always felt that Mask of the Sun is the "canon" among the two older games and I see this thrown around so much around reddit and other sites. You mention it, and to be fair it is because Falcom themselves told us it was, but they and the fans don't go too far to mention how terrible Mask of the Sun actually is.
    Of course people can think of this like they want, but it is such a disservice to the Ys series that people skip over Dawn of Ys because Memories of Celceta is now THE canon Ys IV, when it is so mediocre, and even Mask of the Sun seems to be played more than Dawn.
    Ok, rant over... I just really like Dawn of Ys and what it did for the world building started by Book 1& 2.

    It's always nice to just have a shorter (yet excellent) experience once in a while. Wouldn't say it was one of the best YS titles I've played but still up there as a solid entry - music's great too as it always is.

    @darkhorse744 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Nice review, I mostly agree with you on the music.
    I really loved Theme of Adol, so the fact that it's only there as the Game Over music is painful.

    • @Aboveup

      The Dawn version of Theme of Adol 1993 is one of my all-time favorite Ys tracks alongside Walking The Path of Legend. They're the exact kind of tracks my mind goes to when I think "Ys music."

    • @darkhorse744
      @darkhorse744 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Aboveup Definitely, Celceta is really one of the few Ys games where the music felt pretty weak.
      Also, that Dawn version is just Adol's theme to me now.

    • @ztune3945
      @ztune3945 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The real reason of why some tracks from Dawn of Ys didn't make it to Celceta was due to legal issues with handful trakcs that involves plagiarism.
      There's no denying the OST of Dawn is superior despite bieng outsourced arrangements to Falcom Sound Team JDK as they only wrote the compositions and not produced the OST themselves. This includes all Falcom PCE ports.
      Nevertheless Celceta does have have original tracks like Ancient Gods, Morning After the Storm, and Seeking the Vanished Mask that Jindo and the JDK band members filled the void.

  • @grittynerd
    @grittynerd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Now i understand, Celceta flower.. that's why all that bloom effect (in particular the original Vita version)! :P
    For me Celceta feels like a patchwork of elements that needed more work to be better. Even the flashback of Adol life could have been integrated in a more interesting way all around the game instead of few stuff put there more for fan service than anything else. Also it's funny that reading about Celceta years ago i had the thought he had to enter flashbacks of people in that world, recalling past lives to unlock his own memories and thruth about current events. I had too vivid imagination because basically nothing it's like that ;)
    I played on an harder difficulty and combat requires a bit more care but really nothing is too different skill wise. You need to dodge a lot more for sure but still unlocked moves really are more fun to discover than useful. You usually find one here and there every some time for each character than can be used over and over without too much skill. That's one of the things i dislike of the party system, even the unlocked stuff from weapons in Xanadu Next are far more interesting and you can think of making a "build" around those than the ones in these games. I am still searching for a realtime party base combat that is skill based, usually a lot is put on automatic or there's some safe guard to prevent the dumb AI of party members not to kill your companions when you don't control them. If i really need to choose one i tried i'd say Tokyo Xanadu makes you switch characters in and out instead of being present everytime and has some skill based elements (that work because there are linear levels, i don't think it would work on "openworld"). More than characters being added fire power and metroidvania gimmick to unlock a blocked path i'd like to see really a switching that is even more interesting than "this weapon doesn't do ANY damage for some reason, sorry you need to move to someone else!" ;)

      "Also it's funny that reading about Celceta years ago i had the thought he had to enter flashbacks of people in that world, recalling past lives to unlock his own memories and thruth about current events."
      It's interesting how that exact understanding of the setup before playing the game you had is exactly what wound up making its way into Ys 8. Where it was used to much better effect.

    IIRC it's been revealed in more recent interviews that Falcom's writing staff is mostly a revolving door of newbies who work at the company for a few years before leaving. That explains some of the less stellar writing in their more recent games - be it Ys, Trails, or what have you.

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      That would not surprise me if it were true. I've seen people get angry at modern Falcom being too much like contemporary anime, but you can see the same being true of old Falcom and what kind of anime was releasing alongside their games back in the day. Their old output wasn't perfect by any means, but I think the newer focus on gigantic game-spanning narratives and lore points is hurting their output.
      Like, why couldn't we just let Adol be an adventurer because he goes on adventures? It's such a weird detail to spin an entire game around like this.

    I will admit the soundtrack did grow on me quite a bit the more I played but it's definitely far from one of my favorites. There are maybe 4 songs I feel really stood out in memories of Celceta the others just blended together.
    That being said I also think it is important note love for this game is going to come with familiarity of the past entries. when I played this I was blown away by it but there are much better entries in the series imo. I also don't have the knowledge of the past two versions to compare, but it was really interesting to see the opinion of someone who did. Great review good sir.

    This was a really great review I love the YS games! I have games of the series for my Nintendo switch and this one I am getting for my PSVITA, what I love most about this is no matter what YS game I play I will be able to play it on the go! as it relates to this particular YS game I love that you can walk around for all the character not only that but each character has their own ability! That right there is a plus for me. From watching this review it will always be something to look forward to playing this game. I was also able to find a copy of the silver anniversary edition and this was not easy to find so I can look forward to having more content that just the great game itself, I am very excited to play this game!

    I personally love celceta's core feel so much
    it might not be as open as ys8 but it feels super tight
    also I prefer how flash guard is actually a block in celceta cos it feels more natural to time as to ys8 and 9 where you only do the block animation if you're successful
    Celceta does lack in alot of ways like its story and such but for some reason its just the eaisest one for me to sit down and get into a grove when playing
    when i played it I sat down to test it on pc compared to the vita version I'd bought and played about 5 hours of before the pc version got announced and while testing the pc version I accidently beat the game cos i kept coming back its very much just a much more polished version of ys7

    This is probably the only review of Celceta on youtube that compares it to the original versions of Ys IV.
    Falcom really did this remake dirty, I heard they had issues during development with the PS Vita so the game was very rushed, but I'm not sure if that excuses everything besides the abrupt ending. Ys IV deserves another remake, maybe after Ys X and the Ys V remake.
    Also one thing I want to add to this review is the art style of this game (the 2D character art and portraits) look so bland and generic, every other Ys game has its own recognizable art style, but Celceta's is just so painfully dull that it pales in comparison to something like Origin, Seven, or VIII's art styles.

    The thing that's the most noticeable for me about this is all the missing songs that were in Dawn of Ys & Mask of the Sun. Although i think the PS2 Mask of the Sun was missing The Great Ordeal just as Celceta is also missing it. Outside of that one song, which was based on Yngwie Malmsteen's Far Beyond the Sun, I don't get why the soundtrack was changed so much. It's irritating! I still enjoy this game, it's my second favorite Ys 4, with Dawn as my favorite & the PS2 Mask of Sun being my least favorite.

I also know that the questions that you did find answer for are in-game. And of course, In all Ys games, you will find questions here and there that the game never going to answer for.
    I haven't yet played The down of Ys. However, after watching your video about The Down of Ys and Mask of sun and getting to know those interesting differences between the versions (especially a real sequel that involving old characters), I got excited to play these versions even if they are't cannon. As someone who started off with Memories of Celceta as their first Ys game (and Falcom game) I'd disagree in saying that this is a bit a good entry point into the franchise as i came out loving Memories of Celceta not having any attachment to the previous versions. I even recommended this as an entry point to my friend (LadyPelvic) who did a review as well. And just like me with no attachment or expectations going in came out loving the game as well.

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Problem is more that it flies in the face of what makes the rest of the series actually good. The higher focus on story, longer length, and lack of ending doesn't really set a good expectation of what to expect from the rest of the series.
      If you add on top of it that the story itself doesn't even really function or has an ending to speak of *without even knowing about the past versions* it's a hard one to recommend in general. Nice you had a good experience playing it, but I've known more people who didn't bother giving the series a second chance after this one.
      Not sure why you'd think I'd know your friend either. Since we're namedropping people neither of us likely to be familair with, if you want to see someone who disliked it more than I did in the comments who has more of a name for himself, Wyrdwad, one of Xseed's localizers for the series posted in the comments as well.

    I tried playing this game after origins and dropped it for ys 1 and 2. Then tried again, dropped it for 3 remake..again, dropped it for 6. Now I'm trying it again. It's really missing something, so far I'm not liking the party system. I don't like the exchange systems.
    The game feels like busy work, but the busy work is also the most enjoyable aspect. Something about the story feels off. And I've never played the original. Something about the towns and characters, lack character, or reasons for me to talk to them.

      I heavily recommend you try out the original sometime if you have a way to. You mentioned you liked 1-2, and the PC Engine version of 4 is pretty much an evolution of the originals at the time. Granted an evolution of the original forms of those games, so getting used to the PCE versions of 1 and 2 helps put it in context. Not like those games are all that long either.

    As someone who has not played either of the original Ys 4 games, I enjoyed Memories of Celceta a lot
    I would rank the party based Ys games VIII => IX > Celceta >> Seven (Seven felt very rough in general and I ended up dropping the game when it disabled all the fast travel points and told me to go back to older dungeons)
    I think the ending is just fine as it is
    It doesn't answer everything, but I think we don't need to know beyond what is shown
    And the changes to Karna and Eldeel don't really feel like major problems for someone who doesn't have prior knowledge of Ys 4
    Your review does make me wonder if I would have sung a different tune if I had played Dawn of Ys myself beforehand
    Not that I can do anything about that now though

    Should be noted that while the OST of Celceta is down 18 tracks, there are actually more tracks missing than that since there were multiple new tracks added to Celceta courtesy of Jindo and key members of jdk Band at the time. While there is an obviously plagiarized track in Ys IV, I don't quite understand why so many are gone. That said, I am more than willing to trade a few of those tracks for Ancient Land.

    Ys: Memories of Celceta is pretty good game, it play great, sound and looks great, the journey is interesting but the last few parts doesn't hold up! I think you just have a bad opinion because you played and you liked the original game!
    Personally I prefer what you call Ark combat system since for me Ys is going as Adol solo adventurer but the party system is a great addition I wish if they make the next game combat similar to the party games but in a Solo adventure! The only game that I can go to with bump combat is the Ys 1 since it was the first game I played!

    I still don't know how to feel about the ending, since in one way it ends really abruptly but then again, what the narrator says in the end does feel like something Adol would do for some reason.

    I think by not spending much time with the weapon crafting, you avoided probably the biggest balancing flaw in the entire game. I consider Celceta to be a rather big step down from Ys Seven gameplay-wise as well (to say nothing of the story, but you covered those issues at length!), and the reason is because of how skills and weapons are handled. In Ys Seven, since you learned new skills from weapons, every new weapon you found was exciting -- and going out of your way to open a treasure chest and find a weapon in it was always a rewarding experience.
    In Celceta, however, you just kind of... learn skills out of the blue, so finding new weapons out in the wild isn't really important anymore. ESPECIALLY considering that the crafting system is so broken that you can literally take any weapon you want and use up an insignificant number of materials to quickly make it an absolute powerhouse that completely demolishes any new weapon you might find in dungeon chests.
    As a result, hunting for treasure chests... kind of loses its meaning in Celceta. For a game that's all about map exploration, the fact that the things you're likely to find by checking out every nook and cranny are going to be next to useless makes the whole thing a bit underwhelming IMHO.
    Between that and the bosses basically all being nothing more than damage sponges, Celceta is one of the less satisfying entries in the series to play for me, in addition to being dissatisfying story-wise. Still enjoyable, but definitely a step down from what came before it. (Which isn't aided by the Ys IV music arrangements all being rather lackluster, on top of it all!)
    I think you did a great job summarizing the game's storytelling and pacing flaws, and I completely agree with almost everything you said. Though if you want a Falcom game with an even WORSE story, you should play Nayuta no Kiseki sometime! Gameplay-wise, Nayuta no Kiseki may be one of Falcom's best titles, with some of their most creative and fun boss designs to date and an absolutely outstanding soundtrack (even if one track is 100% plagiarized from Xenosaga Episode I!). So I do very much recommend it! Unlike Celceta, it's an extremely satisfying experience, and is just a whole lot of fun overall. But story-wise... man, Nayuta no Kiseki has so many moments that leave me thinking, Falcom, what the hell were you ON?! Why did you think this was OK?! ;)

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I was pretty nervous going into this one for various reasons to be honest. I kind of had a feeling I wouldn't like it as much as the other entries I'd covered, and I wanted to enter the review whenever I could at least shake that feeling off and be a bit more fair to it. I ended up liking Celceta more than I thought I would, if you can believe that. Expected something worse, but it was mostly okay, outside of some frustrations.
      Also I definitely saw the direction weapon upgrading could go and wanted to ensure I could still have a good time before that got out of control. It's not surprising it gets as bad as I thought it could.
      Still have to play Nayuta no Kiseki, because what I've seen of it does look like a lot of fun. But the story thing isn't surprising to hear considering I did hear about that secret ending connection thing which is a bit... Forced? To say the least.

    • @Wyrdwad
      @Wyrdwad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Aboveup The ending isn't even the half of it. I mean, this is the kind of story where you're trying to help someone hide from a villain who wants desperately to kidnap her, and who's capable of teleportation, and your awesome plan for keeping her safe and well-concealed consists of taking her to the top of a tower in the middle of nowhere that just so happens to be ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES THE VILLAIN EVER TELEPORTED TO. I bet they'll NEVER find her there! ;)
      There are just so many questionable motivations, stupid plans executed stupidly, and MOUNTAINS of exposition (a trait that plagues a lot of the rest of the Trails series too, sadly), making Nayuta far and away the worst story with the overall stupidest characters in Falcom's history as far as I'm concerned.
      ...Yet, again, it manages to be arguably one of their best games, when taken on all of its other merits, mixing the very best parts of Ys, Zwei, and Gurumin together into a nearly perfect action RPG formula that's just an absolute joy to play.
      With a remake of the game having just been announced, I'm looking forward to it getting more exposure, and I know you'll eventually review it -- and I can't wait for that, as I have a feeling it's going to be a really enjoyable video to watch as you struggle with the dual nature of one of Falcom's most inherently divisive games. ;)

    Personally I agree with your assessment of the story I also felt the combat was very meh in comparison to Ys VII. Ys VII had systems meant to keep you engaged in the combat especially during bosses which were a highlight also they limited the amount of healing items you could carry furthering an emphasis of mastery.
    In Celceta it’s stockpile healing items face tank the enemy and win unless your playing on nightmare it’s rather lackluster. At least Ys VIII had a fantastic story and the combat was incredibly engaging although I will agree that flash guard is broken in that game and should be rebalanced.

      I'm the opposite actually I felt the boss battles in Ys Seven were damage sponges. Memories of Celceta fixed alot of complaints I had with Ys Sevens combat. Though Ys Sevens combat did improve towards the end once you got into the few final bosses it really began to shine.

    This was my first Ys game, and it kept me off the series for the while. I'm sensitive to "the girl one" characters, so the green girl drove me INSANE. Knowing it's a remake and her original was cool as hell, it seems like moe pandering or something...
    Didn't like VIII much either, though the characters were more charming, mostly cuz of Flash. I hate when enemy attacks are a resource you mine instead of an actual threat. Totally ruins the fantasy of the game for me. And it makes the harder difficulty damage sponge enemies deeply uninteresting; once you learn the timing, it's a test of patience. Made more sense to me in Tokyo Xanadu where dungeons are like arcade score-attacks and disconnected from the larger world.

    Great review as usual, and I can't say I disagree.
    On the topic of combat types, what pushes me towards liking party combat most, even in the less-than-great entries, is having that feel and spectacle of a group of buddies getting into the thick of things. Weapon/artifact/bracelet switching is cool, but switching control to already engaged allies just feels better to me. That said, I really don't dislike any of the three types.
    And man, Karna got done dirty, but for me Bami got it the worst visually. Not that I hate her design or anything in Celceta, but it's so muted and far less striking.

    I played Ys 1&2 and 3. Now im playing Celceta and with 16 hours in i can say that i love it. It can be super recommended for first timers and your review is realy bad. If you are thinking on playing Y's you can easily start with Celceta. And if 8 is better it's awesome that you play 8 last.

      Yeah, no. I don't know if you have watched his other reviews, but he is a good at it (and it's not like you need to agree with a review, so…). The plot stuff is a really good point, specially coming from someone who has actually reviewed the rest of the series (excluding IX because it has not been released yet on PC). And that includes the past versions of Ys IV.
      Also, while is true that you can technically start at any point (besides II), Celceta (and the other Ys IV games, VI, and Origin) do benefit from basic knowledge of the Ys I & II lore. I & II, III, V, VII and VIII are mostly standalone. IX may or may not benefit from having played at least V and VIII (haven't played IX yet). At least the games aren't that long (most of the time, VIII is a really long one), so it's easier to replay them.
