This game was my 1st Ys and it made me a Falcom fan & even a Trails fan lol...Very good review & I agree with what you said about the story, the gameplay is the real star here. I bought Oath in Felghana & I can't wait to get Ys 8 it looks amazing!!
I did the same thing when Trails of Cold Steel came out. I finished Memories of Celceta, then The Oath in Felghana. I'll more likely play Ys 8 now, before Origins.
I think Celceta gets too much shit generally but I think most of the criticism here is fair. Also FYI Falcom's sound team did the music for Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys, everything brought back from there has only been rearranged for Celceta. I personally appreciate most of what those OSTs have to offer, and Celceta's original tracks are also really good. Falcom seemed to have some technical issues with the Vita back when developing this game so it would explain why the story doesn't have time to finish all it's plot threads and has a very rushed end.
Is it weird this is my favorite Ys game? Really its this game and Dawn. The story moments that focus on Adol are really strong, and its a big reason why I love this game so much.
To be honest in Ys I mainly love the lore, so I wasn't disappointed with the story at all. Or at least with all the hints and implications, combined with the Ernst "foreshadowing" it made me enjoy it all the way through, I'm biased about that though, since Ernst is my favorite antagonist in Ys. My biggest issue was that the antagonists, except for Gruda, lacked any proper... "oomph", as both their designs and fights were somewhat generic. I loved the final fight with Gruda though, even if it was short.
The connections to Ys VI are what interested me most about this game as well, I just really wish the ending didn't feel so rushed. Lore wise this game was great, but Celceta itself is just not that interesting I guess?
The biggest problem with combat in this game, aswell as Ys Seven is how the dominant strategy becomes spamming charge attacks and then skills. Normal attacks are kinda worthless which makes combat start to become a bit tedious.
Pretty much the same in YS8, normal attack is pretty much build sp and just spam skills ..... this especially noticeable in YS8 is when Adol get certain items and it just become skill spamming machine.
Yeah Xseed sometimes double and triple cast the same VAs. In Cold Steel, Matt Mercer voices Olivert, Cedric, and George, and Max Mittelman voices a couple of characters too. I'm guessing they do that to save on costs, but it breaks my immersion a bit when the actor is essentially talking to his or herself lol
Olivert and Cedric had one or two conversations with each other, but I don't think it wasn't too noticeable since Matt Mercer did a good enough job differentiating the two voices.
@@culIen Definitely agree. I played it after Ys 8 and it was kind of a culture shock. Should have gone the other way. Awesome video! I think you made your point very clear.
@My 2bar You haven't really played enough to really judge it. It's very obvious the game has a lot more dedication and love put into than something rushed like Celceta, which Falcom admitted to doing.
@My 2bar 5 hours? This is nothing. I needed to play it 10 hours to really warm up to the game. The first 10 hours weren't bad, but it was more like I was kind of indifferent to the game. As I played more, the environment started to change and I saw more and more of the awesome surroundings, then I mastered my first skill and I started to really/deliberately use the other skills. I saw a lot of different landscapes and nice vistas, then the story picked up. Ys 8 is really a masterpiece :D It just really needs time to adjust to the game. 10 hours sounds much, but Ys 8 is a really long game, so you should look at it in relation to the total time of the game.
Well, if anything, watching this review months before I played Memories of Celceta probably made me like the game a lot more, as I really didn't have any problems with the final dungeon or ending. My only major complaint was with the absence of full quick travel in the first half of the game, although even that didn't bother me too much since the game usually only requires the player to move forward.
I'm glad you were able to enjoy it! I don't want my videos to influence people by any means but I do want them to inform people on what I do and don't like about the games I play in order for them to know what they get into before buying a game. @@culIen It didn't really influence my opinion, but it lowered my expectations a bit. I also played it over a year after Ys VIII, which probably helps, since I think Ys VIII is better than Memories of Celceta in every way except for pacing (and even then, the slower pacing in Ys VIII results in a better story, anyway).
I might be a bit late but I bought Ys MoC now for 29 bucks on PS4 (finished Ys VIII in January on Switch And it is one of my favorite games of this gen) so I watched this review now. I was a die hard (still am) vita fanboy. This was actually my first entry into the series back in 2013. It’s not perfect but it definitely has a place in my heart and collection as being what got me into YS
Funny thing how I came to discover Ys. I had recently become interested in getting a PSVita (this was back in 2016 maybe?) and brought it up to my wife, who needed ideas for my upcoming birthday. Without even having a Vita yet, I saw a deal on Amazon for Memories of Celceta for freaken $9 or something ridiculous, and for whatever reason, I just impulse bought it, figuring why not give it a shot? It ended up being my favorite game on the Vita right up until I played Ys VIII in 2018! I'd never played an action RPG so action-packed before. And the music was insane! But before Ys VIII I went and bought every other Ys game I could find. To this day, the only more recent title I haven't played is Ys Seven, which I have for my PSP but have yet to get around to playing. Part of me is hoping it gets ported to the Switch one day though I'm sure that'll never happen. I'd say my favorite is no doubt Ys VIII but Oath in Felghana is probably my second. Third would be Origin, then Memories. Such a great franchise that is finally getting some attention it deserves in the west!
I was wondering what Ys game to jump into. I went with Dana's game in the end. I finished Monstrum Nox a couple of days ago too. Maybe I'll go back and play this game too.
I think that the underwater combat in Celceta is way better than that of 8 (Laxia, learn how to swim), and found that the crafting was best used to add status effects to my attacks so that mobs of enemies were getting frozen or poisoned after a few strikes.
Agreed. I played on vita and remember really getting into it. Loved the game and the reason why I just got 8 on the switch. Even tho I have it on ps4 but Neverending got into it. Handheld is to perfect. I hope I get into 8 ! Solid video tho. Thank you for the recap
I went through the series from Origin to 1&2, Felghana, then Celceta, seven, ark (wasn't planning on playing it but it went on a crazy sale on steam, so why not) to 8 and 9. Playing through it in that order and going from the napishtim style of gaming to bump combat, back to napishtim style, and finally to 3D maybe influenced my opinion heavily but I was beyond impressed with Celceta and it remains one of my top picks in the series. If I had to pick, I'd put 8 on top with 9 and Celceta rolling around in the mud fighting for second place. Really my only gripe with the game was how unforgiving the mapping system was for having to literally hug area boundaries to get 100% map completion... something that I noticed got massively reworked for the better in 8 and 9.
If you thought that Memories of Celceta is the weakest game in the series, then hoo body...you probably never heard the stories about Wanders of Ys or Kefin. And Kefin was what almost killed the series, from what I heard.
This is a really good review! I love your editing. I've been wanting to jump into the Ys series for a while, but just fell into Yakuza, so maybe next year, lol. Would you recommend I start with Ys 8?
Eh, different tastes. I personally really enjoyed playing through this game and it's story and I enjoyed it's characters quite a bit (Especially Karna), but I will agree that the ending was pretty weak. I've only played VIII and this game so far (this came after VIII), but I'm really enjoying this series. Any suggestions on which one to play next?
@@culIen That's fair (I would've LOVED a map percentage counter for each area like Ys VIII did). Got it. Heh, those two and Oath of Felghana seem to be the most recommended ones to me so far. Guess I'll get all three, then. Thanks!
As someone who played this game in between Felghana and Napishtim, when I was playing through this series, and only got to experience the other games with the party system later, I really loved this one, but I totally get it. I think playing this before you play Seven, VIII, and IX is pretty key to why I loved it as much as I did. Everything from the characters to the premise and its story beats hit for me. I also played through Dawn of Ys before I played through this one and getting to really see a lot of their ideas there a lot more realized helped my enjoyment. I think the story was better in Seven, but the characters were a lot stronger in Celceta. You nailed my favorite and my least favorite parts of the game, though. I loved the memories with young Adol, and the ending was the one part for me where everything just felt like it ended too soon, only because the string of fights for the final fight felt so damn easy. If they just stuck the landing, I could at least say I liked it more than Seven.
I really feel like if they just had more time and money this game would have come together amazingly. Years later I can see where it could have been going if it was finished, and I can see parts of an amazing Ys here. I wish falcom would have fleshed it out more in Kai, but to my knowledge they have not done that.
I just beat this game and enjoyed it a lot overall. While I don't think the story or characters are as good as they are in Ys 8 or Ys 9, I thought they were serviceable. I agree with you on the ending though. It felt very rushed and unsatisfying, which ended a pretty good game with a sour taste in my mouth.
I go over that in the video, it really depends. It's not as good all around but if you want more Ys and don't expect another VIII then maybe get it on sale
Ys 8 didn't really "go crazy" with the crafting systems, so much as "heavily restrict" them. Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed it, but all you can do is build new gear and boost weapons/armor by predetermined increments, while Memories of Celceta was pretty much a full blown MMORPG with crafting, where you can make it so that your beginning short sword can have a significant boost to its attack/critical chances and also absorb Hp, improve SP Regen, and have massive chances to freeze/paralyze/slow/poison/burn, and do something similar with all your armor (with status resistances rather than status attacks), if you really want to invest in it (with the added benefit of possibly not needing use an Accessory slot if you have to deal with lots of status effects attacks in a region. Plus you can also boost your Adventurer Gear. Also, I would argue that heavily restricting Fast Travel until you beat the first half of the game is to make it more immersive, since your supposed to be exploring a very inhospitable region and being able to hop back to home base at any point would really undercut that sensation until you have earned it.
Unfortunately like I said in the video, crafting is completely pointless in this game and you don't even need to use it. They did go crazy with it in 8, because they took a useless and underutilized feature and gave it a point. Sometimes focusing on and fleshing out a few parts of a system that worked well instead of bloating it with parts that don't is better. In my experience crafting in celceta only helps on higher difficulty, and the game's story was so mediocre that I never want to replay it on one of those. If a feature is only really useful on a higher difficulty, that's poor balancing. Ys VIII uses this mechanic to offer meaningful progress, which is "going crazy" in my book.
I'd think 5 probably as it lacks the standard Ys music and visually it's very stiff. Maybe 1&2 aswell as you only run into enemies. I don't find that satisfying gameplay. But I didn't play them enough nor did I try out all versions of them. 7 I haven't played so I can't say anything about that.
For me, the best version of Ys IV will always be Dawn of Ys. Great soundtrack (MoC's arranged soundtrack is pretty dogshit compared to Dawn's), epic cutscenes, nice graphics, grandiose setpieces, solid and to-the-point story/characters, fun dungeons, cool and challenging bosses... and the very best the classic bump-system combat has ever been. No fat or waste, just pure bulging muscles and unadultered old-school JRPG goodness.
Yea, the TurboGrafix version of Ys 4 (Dawn of Ys) was MUCH better in the plot department than Memories of Celceta. I'd really recommend you find a copy of the fan-dub translation (not just the regular translation, cutscene dialog is all spoken, without text, and the fandub did a phenomenal job dubbing it). ...Though I actually would recommend you download a copy of the ISO with the dub patch already applied, even if you already own the disc, because it's an error-prone mess applying the thing, requiring a _perfect_ ISO that even the custom ripping software they developed specifically for the mod can only manage one in three times, assuming there's no scratches, dust, or other damage on the disc... (the modding process involves ripping the disc, using a tool they developed to extract the ADPCM audio directly from the ISO, replacing the files with to-the-byte-perfectly sized translated files, then injecting those new ones back into the ISO with another custom tool; there are 3 points in this process with a pretty random but frequent failure rate... though it's flawless when done properly... though the audio can be very loud if played in an emulator, there's a volume adjusted version for emulators out there if you look hard enough... I'd give you a link but publicly posting something like that would be a good way to get my mega account terminated, lol)
I don't understand why people hate Ys Celceta. I love the mysterious ambiance of this Ys game and the land of Celceta/world map is really intriguing. For me the Altago (Ys Seven) world building/world map is so boring if we compare with Celceta. But I have to admit that I hate the final dungeon when you have to turn a golden ring and then create a path lol.
It was mostly fine but the ending segment is one of the worst segments falcom has ever made. I feel I did a good job backing up why I just didn't like it in my video, but if you disagree thats totally fine!
@@culIen nope I agree with you for the story (particurlary near the end), but I really love the ambiance (don't know why). Sure it's not a masterpiece like Ys VIII, but a fun game in general. By the way did you see the recent Falcom interview on Gematsu ? Kondo confirm that they are working on a west release date for Ys IX. 😁
No doubt the game was rushed since they most likely wanted to spend more of their resources on Cold Steel, which would come out 1 year later after Celceta.
If I recall correctly, Ys 7 only nominally involved revisiting dungeons, since that section involved needing to find completely new paths with completely new enemies, and then when you reach the dungeon it's just a quick cutscene and then you're in a completely new Dungeon one dimension over, with completely new aesthetics/gimmicks/enemies/bosses. It doesn't have a jump button, either, though.
@@lnsflare1 thanks, I just felt like I was going through the motions again and gave up on the final boss that needed you to rotate characters for stronger weapons as shared exp barely does anything. Still better than annoying laxia in Ys 8. Her shrewd behavior goes unpunished and becomes a laxative for that game.
@@MrVariant I mean, she does apologize for it fairly early on, explaining it as being due to the fact that Adol reminds her a lot of her father, with whom she has an extremely strained relationship with, and whose mismanagement of their lands due to his focus on their shared scholarly interests pretty much destroyed their noble house. Afterwards, she is at least as friendly with Adol as everyone else is.
@@lnsflare1 she constantly goes on to be annoying after that initial bit. Or is past 7:15 in this vid th-cam.com/video/qscW-9ir1mY/w-d-xo.html I know some can play games for hours and let it develop. I stop when someone annoys like her or that useless woman in dragon quest 11.
One of the very last lines of this video is me saying "it's hard to say I truly hated the game". I just didn't care for the story, that's not hateful thats just having criticism. It doesn't mean I think you can't love the game lol
I honestly think the best comparison for this video is ys 3, oath in felghana, as the games share a lot of similarities. Ys 3 handles its plot delivery much much better, but its gameplay is a bit rough, as it wasnt as perfected as it could be, as we see in ys origin. Its a similar story here, where the systems are much more improved in ys 8 than here, but the gameplay is just way too much fun. Also i do share your reservations about the ending as well, tho my problem is how unresolved it feels. The game literally does just. end.
I feel like Felghana's gameplay feels a bit more balanced, probably because it was more constrained. Origins is definitely the VIII to Felghana's Celceta, but Felghana was a much better game than Celceta imo. Really upset with the ending, I think I have the VOD on my twitch still of me reacting to the ending live. What a mess.
@@culIen i think overall i prefered celcetas game play style, but man one thing i am kinda surprised u didnt mention was how easy celceta was! Other ys games kicked my ass, but that one was a breeze. And yeah the ending was very disappointing to me as well
I'm 20 hours in Ys 8, and can't find a single thing done better than Celceta, how is it possible people like that game more than this one?! I don't agree with most of the criticism in this video lol
Well, everyone is certainly allowed to value different things in games. People who have played both to completion that tend to prefer VIII do so because the gameplay, story, and exploration feel more fleshed out. It builds off of Celceta's fundamentals, and unlike Celceta they didn't run out of money at the end which left it unfinished. Most of the people who do not like celceta don't like it for that exact reason. I would just recommend going into VIII with an open mind, not trying to see how it is better or worse than Celceta. That way if you still don't like it, you can at least say you looked at it on its own merits. Have a good day!
@@culIen It's very different, plot and otherwise; personally Dawn of Ys and Book 1 and 2 are two of my favorites in the series (Origin is probably my favorite, though). I'm in my 40s, so I grew up when 16bit CD games were mind blowing. Though I've played through both as an adult I think they hold up despite the limitations of game design and hardware at the time :). Definitely worth trying! (The ending for Dawn is very charming if not totally cannon). Anyway, loved your review, totally get the Adol thing :D.
I have the Vita version, but did not finish it. I plan to play it again on PS4 later. But you really need to tone down your praise with Adol... what's wrong with you! . . . . Praise the waifus more!
YOUU YOU ARE THE SHILL WHO MADE THE LOWEST RATED YS GAME SOUND GOOD. fuck.. well i am rushing it I know it's bad. Gameplay wise yes. Good .. better than trash games... But the anime barf particle effects cloud the enemy moves which itself are fast which would be ok... If they weren't weirdly telegraphed. Specially bosses There was no proper way and after steam horse knight I ended up crutching on flash shield. I love that I can upgrade weapons to +72 (+9 to each stat) cause it actually makes a difference. Going to weak and puny adol to unkillable adol. But god damnit. The boss gimicks. But I will emphasize. I was rushing the game cause I wanted to finish this then 8 then 9 within 5 days Yea that's not happening. I guess that's what finally made me giveup Tho if it was good in its own right . I would have forgotten about time. Tldr I was rushing It is better than trash But Louder and bigger telegraphs that are visible from the corner of your eye like dmc and ds and this game would be amazing. I want to come back to it after 8 and 9 . Hope they pull me into the ys games

I was really excited to get this game when I first got my Vita. One of my favorites in the system.
11:08 nice one
Your love for Adol is everything
Because I would give him my everything
@@culIenI'd give you a Gaza rooftop
I've been playing Ys in order of release and Celceta has been the best game by far, it's a lot of fun
I hope you do a video about Ys origins I love that game
I just beat this game and enjoyed it a lot overall. While I don't think the story or characters are as good as they are in Ys 8 or Ys 9, I thought they were serviceable. I agree with you on the ending though. It felt very rushed and unsatisfying, which ended a pretty good game with a sour taste in my mouth.
I'm new to Ys I'm interested to try it which game should I play of my new experience
Ys VIII for sure, it's the best game in the series
@@culIen alright I will try that game thank you ^^
Ys Origin, Oath in Felghana, and Ys VIII are my top 3 Ys Games.
I think I agree with that completely. VIII is one of my top 5 games of all time, and Oath and Origin are amazing in their own right
Where's my Ys Seven video now?
I have to play Ys Seven still haha
i happens after ys 3 oath in felghana... not ys 2
The games are actually not numbered chronologically. Look up a timeline online, it goes:
Origin->1->2->4->3->5->8->6->7->9
I played lacrimasa and loved it should I pick this one up?
I go over that in the video, it really depends. It's not as good all around but if you want more Ys and don't expect another VIII then maybe get it on sale
Great review, Cullen. This was my first Ys game. I really enjoyed the gameplay and music but the plot ... Meh.
my first YS game too
6:00 that song slaps tf u talking about
The music just makes me climax
You have a crush on Adol?
Instant Subscribe, always xD
Gross gay af
Adol is going to be replaced as protagonist of the YS games, YS 10 is going to be his last adventure.
The Adol fanboying? Was awesome! LOL! You earn a sub, man. You earn... a sub.
What I didn't like about this game were the puzzles.
Especially in the final dungeon. They gave me a headache. 😫
The combat is still fun though.
I actually like the character switch in this compare to 8. 8 just switch the character to your active spot.
Ys IV on PCE is all you need.
Il be playing this on ps4 soon
Yes but... where´s Dogi :O
Where did you go man? we miss ya
This video burnt me out hard. I have a C;C, S;G, and P3/5D vid in the works but I need time to get back into the swing of things

Still waiting on the ps4 version of this to be ported to the west
Wait till you see how he looks in ys 9 as the Crimson King
@astariaj4520 already have a whoooole vid about gushing over the crimson king dw
@culIen guess I'm late to the party. Hell I'm straight but even I have to admit the Crimson King is a fine specimen.
Hey now Cullen you sounded way more hateful in your streams. You were pretty chill and even about all this.
Gotta be fair and professional for my channel ^-^
#LetThemCrushOnAdol That is all.
It is not by far a weakest game in the series. Gameplay is fantastic, music is awesome... Story is so-so.
What would you consider the weakest? Imo the gameplay was fine, the music was solid, and the story was bad.
No fat or waste, just pure bulging muscles and unadultered old-school JRPG goodness.
at least now adol is not knight anymore..
but ADVENTURE
I wanna hear more about Adol crush - he's not as sexy as Balthier though
This is a good game I have it on my psvita
on special now pstore Eu region 5 bucks..
Ohhh so THATS why adol cant swim in 8 or 9. He traded in for jumping and no fixed camera angles lol
I love Adol too 😂😎
No doubt the game was rushed since they most likely wanted to spend more of their resources on Cold Steel, which would come out 1 year later after Celceta.
Well scripted review. Subscribed.
Thanks, glad ya liked it and I hope you enjoy the rest of my content ^-^
at least y's 7 let me jump. Though I hated revisiting dungeons, that monument bit sounds like similar filler.
Or is past 7:15 in this vid th-cam.com/video/qscW-9ir1mY/w-d-xo.html

You didn't play on nightmare your 1st run. You should have
Such a hateful review. I loved it it’s fun ps4 vita and pc. This reviewer is a wet blanket
Dawn of Ys is definitely worth a play fwiw. Mask of the sun, not so much.
Is Dawn noticeably better than Celceta?
@@culIen It's very different, plot and otherwise; personally Dawn of Ys and Book 1 and 2 are two of my favorites in the series (Origin is probably my favorite, though). I'm in my 40s, so I grew up when 16bit CD games were mind blowing. Though I've played through both as an adult I think they hold up despite the limitations of game design and hardware at the time :). Definitely worth trying! (The ending for Dawn is very charming if not totally cannon). Anyway, loved your review, totally get the Adol thing :D.
And yes, Adol is sexy... but he's nothing compared with Dogi woof #gaymerthirsty
Shut up!!
I care about the history!!
Ys I do 😃
I have the Vita version, but did not finish it. I plan to play it again on PS4 later.
But you really need to tone down your praise with Adol... what's wrong with you!

Praise the waifus more!
Nah in this particular Ys Adol is the most attractive.
Play Ys IV Dawn of Ys, it’s a fantastic game!
People who claim Celceta is the weakest game in the series haven't played Wanderers from Ys. Or Kefin.
Looking forward to play those one day so I can see if my opinion holds up then ^-^
YOUU
YOU ARE THE SHILL WHO MADE THE LOWEST RATED YS GAME SOUND GOOD.
fuck.. well i am rushing it
I know it's bad. Gameplay wise yes. Good .. better than trash games... But the anime barf particle effects cloud the enemy moves which itself are fast which would be ok... If they weren't weirdly telegraphed.
Specially bosses
There was no proper way and after steam horse knight I ended up crutching on flash shield.
I love that I can upgrade weapons to +72 (+9 to each stat) cause it actually makes a difference. Going to weak and puny adol to unkillable adol.
But god damnit. The boss gimicks.
But I will emphasize. I was rushing the game cause I wanted to finish this then 8 then 9 within 5 days
Yea that's not happening.
I guess that's what finally made me giveup
Tho if it was good in its own right . I would have forgotten about time.
Tldr
I was rushing
It is better than trash
But
Louder and bigger telegraphs that are visible from the corner of your eye like dmc and ds and this game would be amazing.
I want to come back to it after 8 and 9 .
Hope they pull me into the ys games
@user-zs8oz7wf4g idk what game I shilled you didnt like or what games you consider trash but hopefully you enjoyed this game more than me!
