DCI Traditions: The Cadets - "Z-Pull"

  • Originally designed by George Zingali, the Z Pull was a drill move that thrust Drum Corps into a new age. Originally drum corps used symmetrical/geometrical shapes on the field and then slowly morphed into asymmetrical/linear drill. However, a drill move like this had never been seen before...
    Fun Fact - 1990 is more of a Z-Pull Fake Out but I included it anyway
    The 2000 clip's drill move is borderline...overall it isn't a Z-Pull....but inside the box is a "mini z-pull."

    I was 12 years old when I saw the Garfield Cadets for the first time in my life at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, MA. No one had ever seen or heard anything like what they served up. When the Z-Pull started at the end of the Rocky Point opener the audience erupted into pandemonium. The stadium literally shook as the crowd leaped to our feet and jumped up and down. I’ll never forget how the 83 Cadets made me feel then as a 12-year-old boy. I later got to be a Cadet from 1989 to 1992. I still get emotional every time I see the 83 vid. FHNSAB!

    I was on the very end of the Z-pull in 1984. I covered a lot of ground. In 1984, we marched mostly on grass fields. One night in London Kentucky, we marched the day after a monster truck show, I think. And the grass was very high, with mud. That was not fun. But at Finals in Atlanta, remember the end of the show in 1984 with people leaping out of their seats. That was something I'll also never forget!

    Even though I marched DCI in '83 & got to watch their show several times, my favorite Z-Pull has to be the 1990 version.

      I'm partial to the 1994 version, but next to the original, I have to admit the 90 version is the best.

    I loved how on the VHS the crew showed how fast they were running in 97. LITERALLY RUNNING while playing full out. But I loved how the Cadets brought back the classics for this years show. Kudos to them for recognizing what's missing.

      Jeff hid quite a few small ones in several shows. Right off of my head 2010, 2011, and 2013. He also did a few collapsing Z's that aren't exactly the same thing but definitely a cool nod to the Z pull!

    You know, I've watched almost all of the shows (my knowledge of 80's DCI is a bit limited), and I've never noticed that move as something that was a thing done year over year. Thank you for putting this together and pointing that out, that's a cool concept. Also, can we talk about those 2108 uniforms and never going back to that??? 😂

    This has been controversial among my friends, but I met George in 1980-81 while staying at the Lancer corps hall in Revere. I can remember being at a party at George's an he was always coming up with ideas to share. Some outrageous!
    I swear I heard him call it an "S" pull.
    Just sayin'

    • @Sforzando_DCI
      @Sforzando_DCI  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Well it is most often referred to as the Z-Pull...but I also figured since the last name of the designer, Zingali, started with a Z...that might have something to do with it

    • @Crusader8284
      @Crusader8284 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It starts as a Z, then finishes as an S. I am not so sure it has anything to do with George's last name. I ended up playing in the pit for the Boston Crusaders and aged out in that magical year of 1984. I didn't see George for a long time after that and he was very sick the last time I saw him and one drill move was not on my mind. I loved that guy. So many people did. He never forgot you once he met you. I am a better human being from his friendship. ✌️❤️🎶🎵😎

      In the 1983 Championship edition of Drum Corps World, the author refers to it as “the magnificent S-pull move.” It’s what we called it until somebody (?) started saying “Z.”

      Right off the top of my head, I know there is a leg kick in 2000 after they play each other’s instruments and in 2004 after a trumpet feature.

    Other and 83, I feel 90 and 03 were the better remixes of the Z Pull. Who ever the visual designer was, made the Z Pull formation their own by adding some extra sprinkle to the drill. Which the audience obviously liked. Hell impress me add a double Z Pull adding the guard.
