I'm so old that I remember when TV football and Super bowl half time shows were drum corps and marching band performances. I always thought they were so much fun and enjoyable to watch.

There’s simply nothing like the feeling you get from everyone working together to play music with as much soul, emotion, technique and heart that you can give. It sends chills down my spine-remembering that feeling of utter unity and togetherness, as your body feels itself playing and your ears hear the resulting beauty.
My years in band and drum corps were so incredibly special, and you NEVER FORGET the magic.

Yes, I’m a violinist that ended up doing band because my school didn’t have an orchestra and I wanted to compete with violin. I did pit percussion because my mom thought I was too “pale and tragic” to march in 100 degree June Memphis heat. I had no idea what was going on behind me. But we always watched the footage back the weekend after our competitions, and the first time I saw us, it took my breath away and gave me chills! We did Candide, Make Our Garden Grow, and West Side Story that year (Leonard Bernstein).
      These guys are amazing!😍

Yes. Hardest place i played at was the Indianapolis Hoosier Dome back in the early 90's. Standing five feet away from somebody, you pretty much have to shout to be heard. My best advice to any director trying to prepare for a performance in a dome is to make the kids wear earplugs while rehearsing. Worked well for us. I marched with George Rogers Clark H.S. from KY. G.N. finalist from 1988-92. Small band with about 40 or so total brass. If you wanna check out an old school crowd pleaser, look up GRC band 1992. Music of Blood Sweat and Tears. 6th place 89.45

When my daughter was in high school, the lead director was a professional, but on the field and in the classroom their band was directed by students. They won many state championships and were considered one of the top five bands in the state of Tennessee. This doesn’t surprise me at all.

This is spring ensemble and listen to the detail already in place. This was an outstanding symphonic sound so balanced. Yes there was click bait, and I bit. Having been in a small corps in 1982, I can truly relate to this work. This kids in corps are truly talented. I remember the drum line instructor wrote something technical for a local HS to execute. 2 weeks and they couldn't get it. He was frustrated and wanted to know if it was too difficult. So the drum line, took the piece studied and discussed it for 5 minutes, and made a tape that was flawless for the local hs school to learn from. The oldest corps member was 15, youngest 12. Their statement was, hey that was fun, what else you got? Those were the days.

My daughter plays French horn, having begun in high school with orchestra and marching band now plays in a symphony orchestra. Somewhere along the line her dad and I listened to her with her band at Carnegie Hall. I enjoy telling people that she went from sounding like a sick cow to being able to play at Carnegie Hall.

    • @riconui5227
      @riconui5227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@lyndavonkanel8603 Most commendable.... and impressive. I started on trumpet at 9, and tortured my family learning to make something coherent come out of it. In sixth grade I was encouraged to try French Horn by my teacher. I was reluctant based on the size and awkwardness of the case (Really). But I came to the notion that I made the right move in switching. I certainly don't regret it now.
I would encourage your daughter to persist with her horn. Music is an entree to so much more than simply an opportunity to perform with others. I've never regretted the time or energy expended to become proficient. And can honestly say that D&B Corp was among the most rewarding experiences of my life.

Marching and playing with a high school band and drum corps for over 50 years; I miss the competitions and sitting in the stands hearing a group on the field play Star Wars and someone near me saying if our corps was playing it you would seeing stars. Brought such a good feeling. At my last competition in a junior corps we played a new song to our opening drill. While marching onto the field the crowd roared with cheers. At the start of our performance we played one note and paused. The crowd thought we made a terrible boo boo! But about maybe 7-10 seconds later we played two notes and paused; the crowd then burst into cheers for they understood what we were playing; the theme song from Jaws. That was one of my greatest memories of a junior corps and you’ll never experience that feeling again. Love watching them online. Enjoy and have fun!

Many hours working together to get the sound, balance and blend, on top of the hours of personal practice to get the music, movement, posture, et al, correct. Bravo from a retired educator who is now adjudicating on a regular basis. Lovely work tutti! Thank you for sharing.

When I was in junior high school (1966), most of us brought our own instruments [budget & etc.]
Our director was stuck with five snare drums and six tubas. Plus the usual wind instruments & strings.
He chose for us to perform the Hogan’s Heroes theme as our performance opener.
He was very disappointed at our rendition.
He went to the back of the orchestra, and took over two snare drums.
He hit them so hard, I expected him to break the skins on each. He did not.
He said, “There. That is how I want you all to play this music.”
So we did. I was Clarinet, and never realized how loud I could make my instrument.
At performance, the audience was so breathless, they did not applaud. For about 15 seconds.
The only standing ovation I ever received.
I believe The Cadets have the instruments to do another justice to the Hogan’s Heroes Theme.

Well, if someone has a right to complain before hearing, it's a 1984 Blue Devil (me). We lost by 00.1 point to the Cadets. But I listened first, and it's fantastic! Click bait or not, it's beautiful and beautifully done.
Take away the competitiveness of the sport and you still have exceptional musicianship and showmanship (best experienced live, of course). I don't know how Corps survived the pandemic, but hopefully coming out stronger.👍

One of the best I've ever heard, that '84 competition was just crazy good. Both Blue Devils and the Cadets shows were that close, Have the recording of it still somewhere.

You were a part of a legend -- BD was UNSTOPPABLE in '84 regardless of who won!

I do not know Dancer In The Dark... but this was pretty awesome. Aside from the music the graceful movements of the various players was pretty cool and impressive.

After work I would slip into the marching band room. They would goof of til Mr Lane came in and got them together. Nothing like seeing them go from that stage to being the smallest band even invited to March in the main street parade from the Castle to downtown!! Made working so many nights at the concession stand worth it!!!
