Recently went to my LHS, (all scales represented). Simple shopping list, N scale NMRA standards gauge tool, (misplaced my old one), Micro Trains coupler adjusting tool, (that pliers-like looking thing), and a new "Bright Boy". Nada on all three. Oh, I bought some other stuff after browsing to be polite. Bought what I went there for from an online retailer. The mantra "Support your local hobby store." is getting harder all the time. I propose a new mantra, "Stock it, or suck it." I'll phone ahead next time to avoid an almost 60 mile wasted round trip. Sheesh! No standards tool! Like going into a paint store and no brushes!

I can remember years ago some maintance of way workers made a 1:1 scale gauge from sheet metal and wood and displayed them using it on one of the yard switches to check that it was proper. LOL

I put a 1 inch bolt through the center hole. The gauge never gets hidden or lost under other stuff. Makes a handle for testing laid track.

I am so glad that you have highlighted the importance of model railroad standards. As usual, the presentation, editing and graphics were excellent. I especially like the opening. One small criticism: there was too much discussion of issues with Dan’s coupler height gauge. Could have just noted the situation without belaboring it.

One dislike already? Probably from the unmentioned TH-camr that just jams the coupler height gauge together. lol. Great video. I knew about the coupler and wheel gauge checks but didn't know about the overall dimensions of the gauge being a template for overall passage area. That's awesome!

I am an experienced modeler and find these topics quite interesting. Gauges should have NO droop, especially coupler height gauges. Should explain the differences between standard shank couplers and top and bottom shank couplers. As for weight you don't have the wheels and trucks on the flatcar. If you use metal wheelsets the weight will increase.

Just one comment , no trains are junk some people now are collecting the trains we grew up with that were HO. Not to say anything bad about you scale guys but there all different ways we all enjoy the greatest hobby on Earth. I enjoy watching you tube channels on scale to 027 as well as retro HO with classic horn hook couplers. So enjoy the hobby in the way you do. Andy

The hole in the middle !
N scale chapter : "the profile on the outside is basically all about clearances and incidentally the hole in the middle is in case you wanted to mount this on a stick" ...The answer is in the question.
The sides is the width of cars... the top is for the height of cars... in a tunnel... put the gauge on a long dowel and slide it through the tunnel... find the $?*$E@$!? protrusion of cardboard that flips my auto carrier consists...

Standards and tolerances do make a difference. I think a lot of people take all that for granted. You could have something be at the upper end of a tolerance and another thing at the lower end and they might not work very well.

Looks like not many are old enough to remember the days of putting two locomotives on the track and they would operate in opposite directions. As a kid, I tried doubleheading my Tyco Silver Streak with Tyco Midnight Special and that is what happened :)

In addition to the overall gauge measuring clearance, the 90-degree notch on one side is the height of loading docks. The angle on the opposite side is clearance for nearby obstructions like signal bridge footers or ground-throw switch actuators. Overall, a good video which explains the use of the NMRA gauge. Oh, why the hole in the middle? Put a bolt through and two nuts, one on each side of the gauge, and the gauge will not lay flat and will be easier to pick-up.

  • @kd0r
    @kd0r 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Why put your standards gauge on a stick? Easy! It's to allow you to reach into a tunnel, or under a bridge or where every your fat human hands would be in the way, but you still need to check vertical or lateral clearance. Thanks for the show.

As a total novice I found the video pretty useful for understanding how to get smoother operations out of my trains. One note, I would have liked to seen in this (or in the box car build video - trucks & couple segment) would be a little more detail on using the coupler gauge.
Example: using the gauge for "deck height" before adding the coupler box was mention, but never shown. The same is true for "shimming" the coupler box and or coupler arm. Thanks.

tsgmultimedia I did have one other question on the Track/Wheel Gauge.
I run On30 engines from little Porters to up to bigger Moguls (I.e. Hawthorne/Bachmann - Xmas trains) on HO track, but some of the cars seem closer to O scale (height & width). Any suggestions on which standards gauge or gauges I should use? As on single one seems to cover this, seeing your video makes me think the right gauges would help me a lot.
      Thanks again 👍

Yeah, I suppose if your that attached to material things... (ha, ha). It would actually be a lot of fun to build trains specifically for crashing into things, head-on's and the like. Make parts fly off, etc. The goal would be to simulate the most realistic train crashes for video... or something. That would be a lot of fun! What do you think?

Gauge on a stick? No reason if stick parallels gauge. But, if attached perpendicular to the gauge, like a garden rake, it allows for finished tunnel clearances to be checked without running an arm through it and potentially damaging scenery or structural work

What, if any, penalties do manufacturers incur by not adhering to a NMRA standard (Large scale?)? Also, can we assume that any item that falls within a guage range will still work with each other? Such as 16.50 to 17.07mm track will work together at the extremes and truck wheels within that range will work with any guage track within that range? (A truck at 17.07mm will work with a track at 16.50mm)? If they would not work, why then allow too large a range?

    • @dthead

If a product is not in compliance, they cannot claim it is NMRA approved. It is also a marketing thing that if a product gains official approval, it is a bonus feature to advertise as such......

I laugh whenever I see people criticizing the fact that you guys are so strict about coupler height. More than likely they have not experienced first hand what happens when the coupler height is off. One member at my model railroad club had a low coupler on one of his locomotives and the entire 50 car train he was running became detached at the top of a hill because of this. Needless to say there was a huge derailment when the train came rolling down the grade and hit a sharp turn. At least half of the cars wound up on the floor and were severely damaged (some wound up in the trash can by the end of the night). Hopefully this "first hand account" is enough to convince some of these people to change their opinions on this subject. Great video as always!
