The "Tap Test" is indeed valid! My YU6's have always had an upper-mid honkiness (which could be minimised with eq) and just out of curiosity when passing by them the other day I have them a tap. Guess what? Yup, it revealed a resonance right where that "honkiness" was. I deliberated over this for a long time - about 5 minutes. Then I went to my local auto store and bought two car mats (generic thick rubber with a checker-plate pattern) and pulled the speakers apart. Removed the insignificant wadding and then cut and hot-glued rubber panels to the inside surfaces. The tap test proved that the overly live boxes were now significantly deadened. First test was with all eq removed and they're great now!

Do you "break in/run in" the speakers and amps before doing critical listening? Some people don't believe in this but I've noticed quite a few manufactures mention something in the manual..
Break in is a fools errand. You deliberately put wear on your system to make it "sound right". That's ridiculous. If your system really sounds different after a hundred hours of 'break in' it would fall apart in under 200 hours more. In my years of high end audio equipment usage I came across break in exactly once, ... on over 20 year old loudspeakers, that had rubber surrounds that quite literally desintegrated into little particles.
yes on all accounts. the speakers usually get 2-3 weeks as front channels in my living room system and I don't run a center so they're getting all the info.
Hey Randy have you ever heard or at any rate what is your opinion on the RP-500M? The RP-600M are a bit much for my place and my budget. I came across a supposedly like-new set of RP-500M for $315 and am very tempted...

Got my Walnut RP600M at $325 refurbished (but they were in new condition?) and have been very happy with them. Also, the magnetic grills are nice over the snaps.
My room is 12'6" x 17 with 8" ceilings. My question is which would be better, Prime towers or these bookshelves and a SVS PB-1000 ? My 10 in Klipsch sub at times sounds muddy. So, if I get the bookshelves, a new sub will be needed. Price would be the same for both options, so not a factor. Great vid!
I think you would enjoy the bookshelves with new sub. I prefer towers usually but if its not in your budget or dont want to wait for a new sub then go for the bookshelves and sub.
@Cheapaudioman you should listen to "litanie contre la peur" whenever you listen to Chocolate Chip Trip, off Fear Inoculum, it's a good track to hear the speaker wrap all the way around you.
Great review Randy, this is what I was waiting for. I heard you say the svs is more lively on the top end, but.... which speaker would you consider more dynamic? (I know the Klipsch is known for being dynamic, which I like) How about the svs?
actually think the svs is more dynamic. Even though their low end is rated slightly above that of the klipsch their roll off is much better and the voicing of the svs lends itself to better dynamics imo
hey man have you heard the svs prime satellite? In Australia at least the elac b6.2 are the same price as the svs prime satellite and im just wondering if the svs prime bookshelf is 200 aud better than the b6.2 or the svs prime satellite
Since you're drinking a Coca Cola for breakfast, you should look for the new Coke with coffee that just came out. I was wondering, when you groped the woofers, which was firmer?
@@jerrythornton7167 nice!!! Im, using my RP-150 stand mounts with an Eastern Electric Minimax 6bm8 tube based power amplifier. Makes the Klipsch sound full, rich , textured just Awesome...

i just upgraded to svs from klipsch. klipsch is way harsher while svs is much sweeter. maybe emotiva is sweeter because of ribbon tweeter..idk. im still deciding between airmotiv c2+ and ultra xcenter
@Randy. Please could you do a review on the Kef Q350. I know you were quite taken with the Kef Q150. I hate bright speakers, and The Q150 has a mellow top-end. However, The Kef Q150 got into trouble in the bass department when playing around 85 DB and over. I am thinking of buying 4 Q350's for a home cinema, as my front and surround speakers, I have a JBL Northridge center speaker I'm still happy with.
Yeah. It’s a little idiosyncrasy I have. I occasionally do product training at work and I do that all the time or ask if that makes sense... I’m a bit quirky
Curious. When you're A - B testing the speakers do you have a speaker selector switch or do you have to connect the speakers one pair at a time? Do you listen to a track on one then the same track on the other, or do you listen to a bundle of tunes all on one speaker, then the whole list on the second? I've found comparing speakers that have to be unhooked and then placed in position separately unless there's a radical difference that memory can be a problem. The longer the duration between listens the more the lines can blur. Of course when listening with some people other things can blur the lines and memory become a problem too, but that's a lifestyle issue.
I don't have a switcher as the different sensitivities will play havoc with my impressions as level matching won't be achievable that way. I put the speakers up and level match them and notate the volume level for that speaker at a given spl. Then I listen to a portion of the track on one, switch the speaker, adjust the volume, and listen to the same portion on the other. Generally the parts of the song are 2-8 seconds. I'm listening for specific things and I only compare that specific thing that I'm listening for. It may not be the most ideal way to do it but it's the only methodology that I've come up with that eliminates as many variables as I can. Ideally I'd have two amps being fed by the same source and have the speakers level matched and then change the amp back and forth to get a real time comparison.
Hi Randy, what are your thoughts on bi-amping a bookshelf speaker like the RP600M? Some AVRs have the ability to use the rear surround channels for bi-amping front speakers. Wondering whether it would be worth it. Thoughts?
I tried it with my marantz. I didn’t notice a huge difference. With that said, I didn’t try to bi amp them and listen very critically. If you have the option to do it then I’d say go for it and then see if you can tell a difference. The good news is that the option is there.
I think the real opportunity with bi amping is using two different amps with different volumes and splitting the signal between the two amps and then be able to control the output of the woofer and tweeter separately. Too bright, dial down the treble. Too think. Turn up the woofer... etc. I think I’ll try that.
My current amp does not (INTEGRA Dtr 6.6). It is an avr with good amplification that i use for 2 channel. My speakers are KEF Q15.2 which are bi ampable. I can pick up a used avr with bi amp capabilities for not much $$ so am curious as to whether there is any benefit.
Love your channel Randy. I have a yamaha VX-6A receiver running 2.1. My front towers are 17 year old paradigm legend towers. Do you think these bookshelves or the elac unifi 52’s could replace the towers? ( room is 12 x 15). Trying to save some $ . Much appreciated!
I’m not sure. I’ve never heard the towers that you have. There are some great towers from Emotiva and Fluance and Jamo that may fit the Bill around that price
If they had the exact same drivers I think that could be the case. I’m not sure what drivers the svs are using but I can guarantee that they’re not the same as the Klipsch.
Great review Randy! I know everybody has their favorite music to audition speakers but id like to recommend a song that i just recently heard. It sounded amazing on my Elac unifi slims. It's "Liberty by Anette Askvik" Cheers
The SVS tweeter has a diffuser ring behind the protective screen. Metal woofers is not ideal - they will ring up higher - usually the breakup mode is above the crossover point, but that doesn't mean you won't hear them. If the lowpass crossover on the woofer is a steeper slope, then this is less likely to be an issue.
Randy (You are the Macho man of audio) I like your channel. How come you haven't mentioned the look of the speakers? Isn't that important for you? Prime look amazing. They are like a piece of art. They are perfect. I compare them to my black BMW 3 series and Alien movie somehow lol, if you know what I mean.. Klipsch look weird. Just weird
@@cheapaudioman love the review and delivery of your content, man. I think the SVS Ultra would be your clear preferred “winner” between the Klipsch based on what I heard you say. Hi Randy, you make me laugh with your straight face saying the things you say. Anyway I got to buy the klipsch rp600m for $395.00. What a great deal. Yeah these klipsch speakers are always changing price. Just like you said between elac and Klipsch, price will win between these two speakers.
for home theater I think probably the Primes. With the bigger driver they have a tendency to be able to handle quick dynamic changes I think better than the Emos. With that said, the emos are still awesome and in most applications will be perfectly fine with a high pass filter put on them.
@@cheapaudioman Hi Randy, same question with respect to the tower versions of the same speakers.. Last couple of years I have been thinking exclusively of the Prime towers as a ht upgrade, then discovered the Emotiva T2+'s.. As a caveat to my question, I'd be add adding a center channel of the same series.. C2+ looks like the bee's knees.. Just pulled the trigger on some E2+ as surrounds, getting ready to go all Emotiva, and I saw your dang video.. Great by the way..! Elicit emotion got me.. Cus I know that feeling, rare but I know it.. So, I was originally going to go Primes as I started but then figured the pinnacles would be better, but the price was a bit high.. I have a pair of pb2000 pro subs so my bottom end is covered.. Seems as the Emotivas need a lot of juice as I've been struggling to find a 200-300 watt amp to run them that won't break the bank after also needing to buy a new 4K AVR with pre-outs too.. Arghhh... yes on all accounts. the speakers usually get 2-3 weeks as front channels in my living room system and I don't run a center so they're getting all the info.
@@cheapaudioman very nice, thanks for your dedication.
Hey Randy have you ever heard or at any rate what is your opinion on the RP-500M? The RP-600M are a bit much for my place and my budget. I came across a supposedly like-new set of RP-500M for $315 and am very tempted...
I’ve commented before on this video, thank you so much for an amazing review, we want more, we want more of the Saturday shoot out whether you do it between headphones speakers and stacks dangle tax receivers you’re just awesome and so entertaining funny like a clown LOL hits the movie? Goodfellas?
I use the SVS Prime with a 12" Velodyne. All I could ever ask for.
Are the Elac uni fi ub52 still your favourite?
Please let us know if that changes.
yes they are but they're not the prettiest and I want to highlight the awesome speakers at different price levels. Also, my favorite doesn't mean it's the right speaker for everyone. The UB52's are my favorite neutral speaker
@@cheapaudioman I think they look cheaper than they are but, as you said, it's a good thing they put the budget on what matters
Got my Walnut RP600M at $325 refurbished (but they were in new condition?) and have been very happy with them. Also, the magnetic grills are nice over the snaps.
I really enjoy this channel 🤘🏻
My room is 12'6" x 17 with 8" ceilings. My question is which would be better, Prime towers or these bookshelves and a SVS PB-1000 ?
My 10 in Klipsch sub at times sounds muddy. So, if I get the bookshelves, a new sub will be needed. Price would be the same for both options, so not a factor. Great vid!
I think you would enjoy the bookshelves with new sub. I prefer towers usually but if its not in your budget or dont want to wait for a new sub then go for the bookshelves and sub.
The SPL10 blows the sw12 out of the water. I love my SPL vs the SW12 I had
@@onecleangti I really wish bestbuy had a sub room to show people have much better a $500+ sub is versus the entry level ones.
8 inch ceiling, you have to lay the speakers on their sides 😁
@@StewartMarkley lmao. Smurf sized house
@Cheapaudioman you should listen to "litanie contre la peur" whenever you listen to Chocolate Chip Trip, off Fear Inoculum, it's a good track to hear the speaker wrap all the way around you.
Great stuff! Would love to see more like this.
Nice review. I'm curious, how much power do you recommend or how big of amp did you use for your test? Thanks again.
Klipsch Rp series speakers are amazing !!
Instead of primes I’ve got the ultra bookshelves at a very reasonable price Loved them!
Since you're drinking a Coca Cola for breakfast, you should look for the new Coke with coffee that just came out. I was wondering, when you groped the woofers, which was firmer?
similar firmness. and I shoot these the day before they go up. had coffee at the beginning and soda at the end
Enjoyment was had.
@cheapaudioman would love a shootout between the SVS Prime and the Polk R100!
The Klipsch will do low powered tube amps ;^)
yes
I"m using the predecessor Klipsch RB-61 II (95db) with a very low powered tub amp and they sound amazing.
@@jerrythornton7167 nice!!! Im, using my RP-150 stand mounts with an Eastern Electric Minimax 6bm8 tube based power amplifier. Makes the Klipsch sound full, rich , textured just Awesome...
The prime makes for a fantastic surround speaker. However, the Ultras make for better 2-channel listening due to a tad better bottom end.
hey just wondering what’s the best amp i should get for a 7.2.4 set up for cheap
also i just recently subscribed and i love all of your content ❤️
I found the primes to be bright, I couldn’t take it for more than a week. . I had the towers and the bookshelf. I switched to the Emotiva t1 and b1 and I also own the rp600m in another room.
i just upgraded to svs from klipsch. klipsch is way harsher while svs is much sweeter. maybe emotiva is sweeter because of ribbon tweeter..idk. im still deciding between airmotiv c2+ and ultra xcenter
What about a canine MRI? Because that costs about the same as the 600Ms. I’m so confused.....
@Randy. Please could you do a review on the Kef Q350. I know you were quite taken with the Kef Q150. I hate bright speakers, and The Q150 has a mellow top-end. However, The Kef Q150 got into trouble in the bass department when playing around 85 DB and over. I am thinking of buying 4 Q350's for a home cinema, as my front and surround speakers, I have a JBL Northridge center speaker I'm still happy with.
they're arriving tomorrow.
@@cheapaudioman Thx man.
Cheapaudioman review suggestion...Keces E-40 integrated amp.
You need to capture the CheapAudioMan when he says "Ok emm? " and put it on a t-shirt.👀
Yeah. It’s a little idiosyncrasy I have. I occasionally do product training at work and I do that all the time or ask if that makes sense... I’m a bit quirky
@@cheapaudioman Hey it's you and that's why we keep coming back.
Dude... you're awesome. That's all I'm going to say.
This was really useful, thanks for this!
Randy, at $200- Fluance Signature Series HiFi Bookshelves should be on the Recommended list!!
I have the reference in right now and about ready to do the review on them. they're probably better for most people than the signatures.
Hey Randy, would you say the SVS is a better speaker than the Airmotiv B1+ or just different?
Thanks for the new Saturday morning ritual! Quick question. Taking bass out of the equation, how do the B1+'s compare to the SVS?
B1’s have better clarity svs better mids
Emotiva B1 or psb alpha B1?
anthem mrx 740 any reviews coming up ?
@@cheapaudioman I guess I’m wondering if these modern books shelf speakers can replace a tower in a small room. Sitting approx 9’ away?
The difference is in the efficiency; the SVS is attenuating the tweeter to get better bass response.
If they had the exact same drivers I think that could be the case. I’m not sure what drivers the svs are using but I can guarantee that they’re not the same as the Klipsch.
What's with the 2 handed soda sips Randy??
being stupid
@@cheapaudioman Mission accomplished!
i've been looking at the svs ultras,, or the b&w 606, i 've heard the older b&w,, loved them, but the svs ultras are built better, i think

Great review Randy! I know everybody has their favorite music to audition speakers but id like to recommend a song that i just recently heard. It sounded amazing on my Elac unifi slims. It's "Liberty by Anette Askvik" Cheers
I will second this!
When’s the SVS soundbase review comin’?
pretty soon. I've got everything scheduled out. looks like it's schedule for 2-19 right now. that may move up though.
The low midrange problem with the RP 600M can be solved by driving them from the 4 ohms tap of a tube amp
Yeah...interior bracing is important.
good humor and good work!
AAAAAGGGGG!!!! your confusing ME! but I'll take the SVS because I like bass that punches. and I have the SVS SB4000 subwoofer woot!
Ultras are $600 per speaker. Should I? B&W 606 s2 are $850 for a pair.
Hmmm
Shame you didn't have a wharfedale comparison before giving away.
Just weird
demo please?
I'm hoping this is evolving into an SVS Prime vs. SVS Ultra shootout.
that would be cool but the ultas are a bit outside of the price range of the channel right now. would love to hear them though.
@@cheapaudioman I understand. Love what you are doing Randy.
@@cheapaudioman love the review and delivery of your content, man. I think the SVS Ultra would be your clear preferred “winner” between the Klipsch based on what I heard you say. Question do the svs prime sound way better with more power? Or do they sound about the same with little or alot of power?
I didn't hear a difference with different powers of amps. with the sound of the amp I did and can tell a difference. these like a more full amp on the bottom
Hi Randy, you make me laugh with your straight face saying the things you say. Anyway I got to buy the klipsch rp600m for $395.00. What a great deal. Yeah these klipsch speakers are always changing price. Just like you said between elac and Klipsch, price will win between these two speakers.

Amp used?
He uses the Emotiva in the discription as a preamp and pairs it with the Emotiva A-300 I believe.
Between the SVS Prime and Emotiva, which would you enjoy more for HT?
for home theater I think probably the Primes.
Then the Emotivas showed up on my radar.. In my mind I have steered clear from the Primes after countess reviews or lack of.. However, I love a very tactile speaker for ht. I have a pair of pb2000 pro subs so my bottom end is covered.. Seems as the Emotivas need a lot of juice as I've been struggling to find a 200-300 watt amp to run them that won't break the bank after also needing to buy a new 4K AVR with pre-outs too.. Arghhh... Appreciate your opinion Randy.. Thank you very much..! -Darrin.
