- Tikka Ultralight Part 3 | Shots Fired! Took the Tikka to the range over two different days to break in the barrel and then test accuracy at 100 yards and shots to 700 yards for some long distance training. Used it on the bench, in the prone, and on some barricades. Lightweight may be just as good as heavy if your fundamentals are sound.

Your rock-solid fundamentals are always refreshing to see, Joel. Thanks for what you do.
Thank you sir!
Nice kit keep it going Joel
Thanks
Cool build. For a match rifle it is indeed light but still heavy for hunting
I agree. A person building a custom hunting gun for the mountains could, I'm sure, get it down to around 7lbs with a quality optic.
Very nice build! I have a tikka t3 30-06 left hand. I have the mdt lss . I am currently looking at butt stocks. Does the mdt that you have in this video have ability to swap for left hand shooter? I cannot wait to finish this gun. I have a yankee hill can and looking at optics also. Super content.
Never heard of Gadsden nor did I know you were so dang close. I’m in Springfield.
howdy neighbor
What magazines are those? I've been using metal AICS pattern mags with a Tikka b/c the clearance wasn't enough to feed properly from Magpul polymer mags. Enjoyed the series, too!
I like this build because it’s a hybrid rifle you could still use it for hunting and shooting steel. If I were to do the same build I would put a 20-20” barrel on it for lighter weight, for more hunting. Sick build though.
Thanks. definitely a more "practical" long range rifle.
Very impressive Joel, but what´s your take on structured barrels from TacomHQ ?
I’m not sure on that. No personal experience. Sorry.
Thanks for watching though!
Nice work. You got me thinking about reworking my Savage 111. It's a light 300 Winchester Magnum I would like to make more precision rifle focused. And 26 lbs for a competition gun seems absurd. I get the stability angle. Do they have a weight limit like IDPA or USPSA? Or run what ya brung?
Open class, no weight limit.
It really helps soak up most of the recoil.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork I see. So outside of open you have more rules to stay within?
@@bmstylee Here's a link to the current PRS rule book if you're interested. www.precisionrifleseries.com/static/media/uploads/2020_prs_rulebook.pdf
@@bmstylee You'll find the divisions and classes starts on approx. page 10.
When you mentioned remember the fundamentals does it help you stay in the scope and spot your hits. I’m asking because I have a 6.5 Creedmoor with a proof research barrel but it’s a savage ultralight with that smaller profile barrel and I’m having a hard time seeing my hits in the scope and wondering if it’s me or is it my build or is it simply a muzzle device that would help it?
I have that 110 ultralight sitting in a Orix chassis
Proper fundamentals is the first thing to check. Make sure your body is square/perpendicular/not-canted behind the rifle.
Make sure you have a solid rest that doesn’t shift or move under recoil.
A firm rear bag can help. One where you can hold the bag and also the buttstock at the same time.
After you press the trigger, make sure you’re following through correctly. (Pinning trigger to the rear and freezing) Until you see the impact.
Start with these.
A brake can help.
A heavy rifle can help.
But they are not as important compared to the fundamentals.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork thanks. Good points

I showed your build to my wife and she became very interested in having one similar but we will go with a 308 caliber and go down to a 47cm long barrel.
Cool. Have fun with it.
Holla atcha boy! 5 shot groups!! :)
nope. Not until you text me back in a timely fashion... lol

What kinda barrel did you go with I watched all three and I can’t figure out weather it a proof or Christiansen arms
Proof carbon in 6CM
Joel, what did you do with the trigger? Factory tikka? Have any thoughts on the timney tikka triggers? Just bought my wife a tikka varmint in .223.
I just left the factory trigger in it. Previous owner tuned and polished it, so it's really nice.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork awesome. That’s my plan. Lol
I just put one together myself right now its at 6 pounds 12 oz. havent decided on glass yet
Nice. Sounds interesting.
Great video! I’m intrigued about the 2.8 pounds before scope and barreled action. How has the stock held up?
thanks. the LSS chassis was a great option initially because it was so lightweight. the issue I ran into was the short forend length. I like to mount my bipod further out for better stability and I also was having issues getting the balance point correct on the rifle. I ended up switching this tikka into an KRG Bravo chassis which solved my problems and only weighed a tiny bit more.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork hi I meant to ask about what was the balance point that was wrong with the mdt that made you decide to go with the krg? How did that balance point problem affect your shooting? Have kind of a similar issue with what I have and I’m curious what are the set up might change it, especially moving the weight more forward maybe
@@rpk5250 hi. in my opinion it's important to find the balance point of your rifle. usually somewhere just in front of the magazine well. Then when mounting to a tripod or placing the rifle on a barricade bag, either way you should place the rifle on it's balance point on top of those things. Then you're not physically fighting to keep the rifle in place, it will just sit there on its own. This helps reduce body tension from the system. Hopefully making it easier to spot impacts or misses.
So to answer your question more specifically - I couldn't get a good balance with the MDT. Switching to the KRG helped me balance the rifle better.
@@PrecisionRifleNetwork thank you!

Why not the 5-25x?
Heavier. I’m going for lightweight on this build.
Is that Rex from tibosaures Rex?
lol no.
