Hahaha I'm just the same. Drives me absolutely insane when I hear people use archaic pronouns in the wrong context. I wish we still used them in everyday language :'-)
I think the best way to remember how to use archaic pronouns is to draw parallels with the first-person pronouns: Thou - I Thee - Me Thy - My Thine - Mine You can just think what pronoun out of I/me/my/mine would make sense and then replace it with the corresponding pronoun thou/thee/thy/thine. Some experts say that singular they has been verbally used far before the 1300s, since it takes time for changes in how words are used to reflect in writing.
@gnoot50 Ah, I see. At the risk of getting internet-beaten, cases like these are why I see forced identity-usage of a "singular they/them" to be cumbersome and inefficient for effective communication. As an option in some cases, sure, but when you MUST use they/them when number or subject is ambiguous, or risk upsetting someone, it causes needless hurdles in understanding. In my humble, respectful opinion, of course, that I'm submitting solely from a position of communicative pragmatism.
As Andreas Armadilla so eloquently put it, “A pronoun is a word which takes the place of a noun, ‘cause saying all those nouns over and over can really wear you down.” I’m 55. I learned about pronouns while watching Saturday Morning Cartoons in the 1970’s.
@ what are you on about? The supposed “problem” with pronouns is about gender, not sexual attraction. Homosexuals do not demand anyone refer to them as he/him or she/her. This is a gender issue and one which shows respect to one’s fellow man. If you use the wrong pronoun, so what? Just learn when someone corrects you and do better the next time it comes up. Hell, I correct our children on their pronoun usage all of the time. “It’s ‘SHE and I went outside,” not “me and her went outside,” for example. People will tell you when it comes up if you have said the wrong thing. Just listen and learn.

And get rid of singular they. I know, I know, "Been around for hundreds of years" but its still a bad design choice to have "they" mean both one person without gender and multiple people in general.

The problem with the brainwashed is they never stop and think holy shit am I brainwashed? The fact that I have so much self-doubt and uncertainty can make life difficult but also assures me that I take the time to examine myself repeatedly.
Yess, preach! Some people got no understanding of grammar or what they're actually talking about when they speak of pronouns, what pronoun we use is based on the context if there are pronouns that are based on gender then that is a direct reflection of someones personal identity similarly to names. You can't just choose to not refer to someone by their name and instead choose to call them "table" or some shit, exactly the same with when someone marries or gains a new title, like Dr or Sir or they become the Queen or something (Dethroning monarchy is a different thing though and mostly political, and it's supposed to be political unlike peoples core identities). People can't decide another's identity, that is for someone to decide themself
Notice how those titles are indicative of an idea that's commonly understood though. Like with "Dr." we understand that this person has gone through a highly intensive, specific vocational preparation for years and years to earn that title. For "Sir" we are referring to a grown man in a respectful, dignified manner. Queen refers to the idea of a monarch, and a way of governance, royal family etc. "They" didn't choose their titles either, it's inherited by whatever material characteristics they are portrayed as... your conclusion makes no sense. A person can't randomly "identify" as a Queen, or as a Dr, without having the required conditions to truly attain that title. The reason why we don't call people "tables" is because tables are a commonly understood concept to be very distinct from a human, and it'd be of no use to call people tables, like there is no descriptive feature there just by calling a person a table.
@@tecategpt1959K but also notice that if someone told you not to call them sir, and you continued, it would be rude. The same logic applies to gendered pronouns as well.
@@EMNaturefarmAZ Rudeness is context-dependent and hinges on the social and cultural understanding of a role or concept. For example, in a society where being addressed as "sir" is universally accepted and aligned with the social norms, it wouldn't be considered rude. However, if "sir" carries a different meaning in another cultural context-perhaps one that contradicts your identity-the perception of rudeness would depend on why you’re being referred to as such. Your personal reaction might stem from a lack of integration into or understanding of that society's norms. Language is a social construct shaped by historical and material conditions, meaning no individual can unilaterally redefine its meanings. While individuals may interpret language differently, cultural contexts mediate these interpretations. Therefore, labeling something as "rude" requires understanding that culture's norms rather than imposing your own interpretation of terms like "sir."
In other languages too, a lot of stuff would never work without pronouns. They/them can be used perfectly when talking about someone you don't know the gender of. Imagine saying he or she every time you talk about someone you don't know the gender of. So tiring... neopronouns can be pretty cool, too
Even if we complied with the "let's drop pronouns" folk and dropped the "gender nouns", They would then get mad that people arent getting addressed as he and her and whatnot. They want to keep the ball but want you to throw it.
i wish those people would just be honest, instead of saying 'can we leave pronouns behind' they can just say 'can you stop humanizing yourself and just allow us to treat you the way we want or the way we find more convenient regardless of who you actually would be if you were a person because we're more important than you' and stop wasting our time
Then instead of the golden rule “treat others the way you want to be treated” use the platinum rule “treat people the way they want to be treated” or even just the plastic rule “be nice” or even the cardboard rule “don’t be an asshat”
There are better translations of the Bible that don’t include archaic pronouns, but the bigots tend to prefer the sloppily translated King James version
no but honestly can we all just use they for everyone eventually? In my highschool community at least, people use they for people like half of the time no matter their gender just cause it's easier. I assume eventually some dialects will evolve (in "woke" areas. To not use gendered pronouns.
As a trans girl I don’t like being called they/them, I only like she/her pronouns so imo calling everyone they/them would be kinda disrespectful if you knew they go by different pronouns……. But if that’s not what you mean and instead it’s like if you don’t know their pronouns then yeah I see ur point that’s completely 100% fair
@OranBrethertob no I mean we just use they them a lot of the time. I wasn't aware people were uncomfortable with it. I'd hope someone would've told us if they were uncomfortable. I think it came from not knowing people's pronouns at first because we are a very queer group.
I was in my English class and my professor was teaching pronouns. You, us, we, have become so common practice in our everyday language because of this WOKE MOB
I got a story from today in my adobe/film class too lol. We’re working on InDesign right now and our books are outdated and refer to the main source of something as a master, like a master bedroom, or master bathroom. They updated the term and got rid of the master part because apparently people were starting to think it was racist and brought back themes of slavery, it is now referred to as primary😭
As an English teacher, talking about pronouns always becomes a clarification that pronouns are not always gendered. Saying “we shouldn’t use pronouns” shows a level of misunderstanding that makes me more sad than angry. If you can, take the opportunity to educate those who would rather focus on the hatred of a group of people instead of recognizing the versatility of language.
I’m queer myself, and I’d love to chime in that bigotry is bad. (Edit: Education is good. This is a great demonstration of that important point). As an unrelated aside, I thought I’d just say that phrases like “unga bunga” can be associated with racism. (Edit: but for most unga bunga and similar are just associated with cavemen. So, the author means no ill. Just providing history.) And hopefully this association is diminishing, but some may have bad memories with the phrase. (Edit:)
Most people associate unga bunga with caveman and don't know there's any racist history. It's great to educate, but it's safe to assume it was not intentional. Also, ignorance is something we should push back on. There's no way to have a discussion on this if people keep bringing up education as if mentioning it is ableist or elitist. We will forever be at a stalemate if that's the case.
I think that those people are trying to make a pronoun drop language instead of erasing them For example, i see in guarani can be "CHE ahecha" or just "ahecha", in spanish "YO veo" or just "veo", that is because the verb has the information to know the person, in guarani this is simple, but in indoeuropean languages, like spanish, is a complex process For example This are all the forms of the verb run on the indicative perfect present Corro, corres, corrés, corre, corremos, corréis, corren... Imagine that with all the simple times (complex times use the non personal forms)
I just use they now, no matter who or the context. Nothing else is needed at this point. Oh, they called around 8 They were here a bit ago Idk where they went I think they went to the restroom Boom, neutral solution to a neutral stance.
@LampManIsCool There is no such thing as "not comfortable" with that particular pronoun It's literally for EVERYONE THEY or you wouldn't have a say in the matter because there would be nothing TO say

I think when they say leave pronouns behind, they mean the socially constructed ideology of gender identity and the use of neopronouns and incorrect usage of plural pronouns to identify an individual man or woman. It seems the more correct way to have said the sentiment of restoring the language in this manner should have been "Let's leave the gender identity ideology behind." But people's attempt to simplify such a sentiment and render it down to the pronouns related to this mentality has caused some miscommunication and misunderstanding. I hope this aids in the understanding of what it means and why we can aid to make such a sentiment be possible to improve our society and restore the english language to a proper state. I hope this helps. God bless!
Singular they has existed longer than singular you and modern English itself, it dates back to the 1300's. Hell, Shakespeare himself used Singular They in his works. So referring to One individual as "They" is and has been proper use of the English language for centuries.
Pronouns are just "place holders" in language to reduce repetitive qualities during communication. They work very similar to variables or pointers in programming lanhuage. They reference somethjg else and are beholden only to those in the conversation or reading written language. There is no need for anyone to get upset at how others use them in language and how comfortable someone is with using them.
@@Aster_Risk Yes, that was clearly the point of the above. It is, in my opion, a good idea to understand that just like any tool all people will use language as they see fit and some of us are kinder than others when doing so. Setting out to say this is how language should be used regardless of intent (i.e. being inclusive/kind or being exclusive/unkind) is setting oneself up for conflict. No person likes to be told what to do. I think if everyone would just stick to their conversations and not worry about others, they would be less upset. It doesn't matter if its nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, etc...bullying and abuse will occur using words and the best solutions are to ignore it and move away from the offender. If someone is "assaulting you" (e.g. they are stalking you and won't leave you alone, in this case even words can be considered "verbal assault") this is now time take some sort of legal action. If you see someone bullying someone else regardless of the intent behind the bullying, I would say it is the ethical thing to try to stop it if you can.
i love that the younger generation of trans people feels comfortable enough to do that shit, even if its only in certain online spaces. oh you want to be called ze/zim/zeirs? fuck yeah more power to you dude.
This? You wannaa get rid of pronouns? Might as well get rid of language and go back to ooga booga. Exactly as the person said, pronouns are beyond just he/him and they/them.
I'm still all for dropping gendered pronouns, instead adding ones that correspond to when they were mentioned. "He was talking about him, while he was listening"? Nah, let's start using something like "1 was talking to 2, while 3 was listening." (Imagine some form of countable pronouns being used, rather than numbers).
@@Aster_Risk That's very valid. But also, I didn't mean an actual number, just a bunch of pronouns that are not tied to gender and can thus be used to refer to any one thing or person. It's basically like regular pronouns, but instead of one potentially being used for multiple things/people, thus getting confusing, you tie it to a singular thing/person in this context, so that it is always clear what/who you are referring to. Like, I'm making a small conlang for fun, and there I made the pronouns es, et ef, ep, etc. The ending consonant there is related to the number system, but it wouldn't be a necessity. I just wanted the pronouns to be short, but systematic. Anyway, sorry for the long response. Whoops

@gnoot50 Ah, I see.
As Andreas Armadilla so eloquently put it, “A pronoun is a word which takes the place of a noun, ‘cause saying all those nouns over and over can really wear you down.”
I’m 55. I learned about pronouns while watching Saturday Morning Cartoons in the 1970’s.
It's about xe, xen etc pronounces, of course.
Newly made pronounces, that we are obligated to use when talking to a queer person that wants this.
@@katherinemcintosh7247 I understand this. The phrase we talk about imo is about people in lgbt community, that want other people to call them by pronounces they want to be referred to. @@ShyCat-r1o demonstrates an interesting effect of referentials like pronouns, reflexives, and epithets-- they all have different boundary conditions in which they're grammatical. sentences like 'John loves Bob's portrait of himself' has only one meaning to any one listener-- though sometimes these meanings are different from each other depending on the dialect or language. in standard english, the portrait can only be of Bob, while 'John loves Bob's portrait of him' means the portrait is of John. a statement like 'John drew a portrait of him' is nonsensical without someone else that 'him' is referring to, while 'John drew a portrait of himself' is self-contained. meanwhile, 'John drew a portrait of John' is highly abnormal, unless there are two Johns involved.

The same people saying pronouns are "1984 newspeak" are literally the people forcing Newspeak on you. Newspeak is about RESTRICTING individuality and expression, not EXPANDING it.
Expanding our understanding of pronouns and even adding more allows for MORE unique individual expression, not less.
These same people are trying to oppress you. You're not allowed to express yourself. You're not allowed to be anything other than their narrow description of what you're SUPPOSED to be. Stay in line, don't question it, don't think about it.
Thank you for such a well-put description. I screenshotted it.

Imagine saying he or she every time you talk about someone you don't know the gender of. So tiring... neopronouns can be pretty cool, too
To summarize; if you've ever referred to an object without saying the actual, exact name for said object, you've used a pronoun
Even if we complied with the "let's drop pronouns" folk and dropped the "gender nouns", They would then get mad that people arent getting addressed as he and her and whatnot. They want to keep the ball but want you to throw it.

I love how you give us the intellectual approach then barrage ignorance for a while. Good stuff!
Thanks for teaching English class to the many of us who can't afford that kind of thing anymore because corporations don't pay taxes💜
I think that those people are trying to make a pronoun drop language instead of erasing them
For example, i see in guarani can be "CHE ahecha" or just "ahecha", in spanish "YO veo" or just "veo", that is because the verb has the information to know the person, in guarani this is simple, but in indoeuropean languages, like spanish, is a complex process
For example
This are all the forms of the verb run on the indicative perfect present
Corro, corres, corrés, corre, corremos, corréis, corren...
Imagine that with all the simple times (complex times use the non personal forms)

God bless!
You said a lot of words but none of them correct or truthful
Singular they has existed longer than singular you and modern English itself, it dates back to the 1300's. Hell, Shakespeare himself used Singular They in his works. So referring to One individual as "They" is and has been proper use of the English language for centuries.
Pronouns are just "place holders" in language to reduce repetitive qualities during communication. They work very similar to variables or pointers in programming lanhuage. They reference somethjg else and are beholden only to those in the conversation or reading written language. There is no need for anyone to get upset at how others use them in language and how comfortable someone is with using them.
Which is why it should be a piece of cake to use the ones people are requesting. To not use them is lazy at best and cruel at worst.

@@Aster_Risk
That's very valid.
