My wait has been over 40 years. I first read Dune at age 15 in 1980. I've read the 6 books by Frank. The first three multiple times each. I really relate to your thoughts about the book because it matches my own. I could go on and on about the 84 film, good, bad, and ugly, but I think I can finally breathe easy now that this current film has been made.

I really love the Children of Dune miniseries. The first episode is Messiah and the other two episodes are Children. The casting is really good I think, particularly Alia and the kids. The woman who played Irulan was wonderful as well. You could tell the people working on it loved it.

I have the utmost respect for all cast and crews but especially Denis for taking the time to create such exceptional adaptation. This movie will be talked and studied about for decades to come.

Mike, have you heard of the new Board Game by C’MON games called ‘Dune: War for Arrakis’?
It’s a 2 player war strategy game. It’s brilliant! Gorgeous table presence, and rich gameplay, dripping with the theme from the book. It plays in about 3 hours.
The Atreides player wins by raising a track called the Prescience Tracker. There are 3 markers the Atreides player has to work on raising: 1) Kwisatz Haderach, 2) Sand Dwellers, and the 3) Jihad marker.
The Harkonnen player has to keep the spice flowing on board called ‘the spice must flow’. But the only can when by getting 10 points on their track. They get points by destroying Sietches.
The Atreides player gets to ride sandworms, the Harkonnen player can fly in Ornithopters.
As Paul gets more powerful he gets stronger desert power until he controls worms and becomes the Kwisatz Haderach.
    An amazing, well balanced game!

I am so very relieved you enjoyed this. Praise the Maker and his water.
I finally read Dune in early 2021. I had bought the book in my freshman year of high school, but when my mom saw it she made this horrible face and said she didn’t want to talk about that book. Something about it really disturbed her. I tried getting it out of her for years but she would never tell me so naturally I was scared to read it as mom usually isn’t that flappable. Then I stumbled on to this channel and saw Why You Should Read Dune. I really thought this book sounded like something I would love and I finally got mom to confess….she had been freaked out by the heart plug scene in the David Lynch movie, a scene that isn’t even in the book. When I told her that she agreed to read it after I finished it. She has now read the first three books and is now a huge fan!
Question: Would you ever consider creating a video on what is wrong with the Brown Herbert books? I know you like to stay positive so this might be a topic to avoid for you, I just thought it might be an interesting short or something. I have no intention of buying any Brian books because he spends a significant hunk of the introduction to the latest paperback editions of the books whining about his dad not being perfect every single moment of his existence and saying how he didn’t like the book for a long time and refused to read it until someone he was hitchhiking with mentioned loving it. Sorry that was an unintended rant but it annoys me.

Also, one of the annoying things about being an English speaker living in Germany: Germans dub films. So when trying to find a way to see it, the options are limited to the OV (original version) screenings, which are less frequent. But oddly, it also starts a few days earlier here than in the US. So we could either see it tonight in English in a normal cinema, or IMAX in German tonight (NO), or wait a couple days for IMAX in English (also NO). So we’ll have to catch IMAX on a rewatch.

I'm so excited to see it in Imax this weekend. I can't deny that I was a little terrified when it was announced that Denis was intending to do Dune in 2 parts. I've always loved his movies and was sure it was going to be great. But it always seems like his movies don't do as well as they should. And especially given that Part I was releasing while theaters still weren't entirely back from Covid, I'll admit that I was really scared that Part I would underperform and we wouldn't get a conclusion.

I think the ending echoed the last line of the book pretty well, centring the experience on Chani. If you take the last line, add the dimension of film Chani’s doubt, and decide to tell the story visually (as one should in movies), I think that last beat being hers is a pretty good homage to the line.

AS a kid that grew up loving Dune back in the early 80's. This was a great adaption. Will book fans have an issue? I'm sure they will but this is the movie medium which I believe was well done. Yes, I agree the best way to tell a 100 percent faithful Dune story is in episode format but no way do I believe a series would get the same level of detail you get with the Dune movies. Plus remember they are trying to make money and appeal to a border audience. I believe the director hit the right balance that as a book reader I appreciate this great effort which I doubt we will ever see this level of commitment to a book ever again. APPRECIATE THE EFFORT AND ENJOY!!!!!!

I'm a similar heretic about A Song of Ice and Fire: Didn't really like the first book, gave up halfway through the second, but really enjoyed the HBO series, or at least the first few years of it. I think it's because I do not like books that jump around between characters a lot.

Love the book and loved the adaptation, but a few things that really stood out to me was how they changed warfare and the changes they made to Chani’s character. In the book Herbert focuses so much on the tactics of warfare, the benefits of shields and the pitfalls of advanced weaponry. It looked fantastic, but I kinda wanted to see the complexities that were originally imagined. And I’m honestly just not sure why they felt the need to change Chani’s arc. I didn’t really understand her characters dissonance with Paul in the movie.

I saw it yesterday. OMG Outstanding. I'm going back to see it a second time & paying for IMAX for a second time. It doesn't feel like a 3 hour movie. I was disappointed that there was only about 20 of us in the theater. I don't understand why the release date is posted as March 1st but every theater in my area - every theater - had the movie running on 29 Feb starting in the late afternoon on multiple screens.

Tymothee was scary as hell in the last minutes of the movie, he was the Paul we deserved.
I was also sad that Thufir wasn't in the movie, his arc in the book made me cry.
Also, do I need to read Messiah to watch the spoiler review?

There is, but I believe it's set before Dune and based on Brian Herbert's material, so I have concerns. And that's leaving out all the changes made to the creative team and the actors.

Adapting an iconic book is always going to involve some compromise because it you stick faithfully to the same narrative you will alienate most of the potential the audience. And you have to actually try to make money or you will never get backing for more. But overall, the whole premise of Herbert's novel was maintained closely enough to satisfy the readers, and a non reader will find enough quality epic movie magic to make them buy tickets. I was brown away by this and honestly left the theatre shunned and inspired and desperately wanting to see it again.

I'm so happy with your disputes against this movie because then I would've questioned if you even read the book.. I feel almost exactly the same about this movie. It was spectacular but the things they cut out in exchange for what they decided to focus on was mind boggling. The ending is the biggest thorn in my side right now.
Was Denis pressured into making that change to her character? Now they have to spend more time in the next book reeling her character back in and support Paul again. Made me furious.

It’s like lord of the rings, where the changes they made make sense, and you still get the essence of the story. I always look at movies as being a different universe, so why would it need to be exactly the same?

I just turned 34 . I first red dune when I was 20 we had just had our second child and I was off work , I was always an avid reader but when i was younger but I had my first child very young so it kind of went by the wayside , my mom had brought me a series of books to encourage me to get back into reader dune was one of them , and my love affair with dune began.
I haven’t seen the 80s film nor the mini series , I actually wasn’t aware of them until a about 4 years ago , having got though the series of books , I always felt the only way to get close to doing this master work justice was to devote an entire season to book the first book in particular comes to mind .
I was a big fan of blade runner 2049 so I was cautiously optimistic but I was also aware that because of the medium you would have to chop and change quite a bit , which I hate because with dune the devil is in the details but I accepted that the story would have to be massively condensed.
The first movie I liked quite a bit , took its time quite a bit of world building but I still felt my beloved dune had been butchered , I haven’t seen this new one yet but I’m looking forward to it , it may not be my dune ( or the dune I would have wanted ) but it’ respects the material enough and makes probably far more accessible to people new to or unfamiliar with the world , and if it’s able to get more people to read the novels then that can only be a good thing in my eyes .
High praise from a fellow dune devotee is good enough for me will check it out this weekend

@@mikesbookreviews . I liked the first one , I realized it had to be condensed to fit the medium, I was disappointed with what wasn’t there but what remained was done well that’s my take , I found David Lynch’s spicer cut which is three hours long which I’ve heard is closer to what was originally intended and closer to the novel so I will check that out . I have come to realize that these dune movies are basically about the dangers I putting your faith in messianic figures what that can de to people and how that can effect the individual in question. If you are a die hard that may disappoint you it did but i understand it .

While I adore all 6 Dune books (the pulpy sewer that was written later is not worth mentioning), I do believe that the first three books are a nice whole and recently, when I re-read them, I prefer to end with Children of Dune, rather then continuing on. Would love to see them on the big screen, but they are, arguably, even more difficult to adapt than the first one.
